  • Today we are going to be tying a squirmy worm fly! This “fly” flat out caches fish! Best fished after a rainfall event when waters are high, and worms are swept into the current for hungry fish to feed on. It’s a common pattern that many use, however, this one holds a secret most people don’t know about! Give it a try! #flytying #flyfishing #relaxing

      Hello, quick question: can you put uv resin on the body to strengthen it so it could take even more strikes? Would that cause the worm to look weird when glowing? Not the wiggly parts, just the part of the hook.

    I got ticketed by the warden on the Penobscott for using this fly in the fly fishing only sections. He claimed it didn't resemble a fly and was considered a lure...still baffled by it

      In my mind if you cast it on a fly rod it's a fly. Lures are heavy enough to cast on regular tackle. That's what I'd tell the judge, unless they have specific fly rules already published that the fly violated.
      Edit, I just looked up the difference between a fly and lure and it has to do with weight, not pattern or design. I'd find it on Google and print it for the judge.

      A number of years ago, I contacted the Department of Inland Fisheries if a Gummy Minnow would count as a fly. A member of their law enforcement contacted me and said because the materials are built upon the hook by hand, not molded, it counted as a fly. I printed that email off and carried it with me when I was fishing in Maine. Squirmy Wormy is no different.

    This fly is in that grey area between what is considered a fly and what is considered a soft plastic. I'm not a fly angler I am a lure angler, but it is my guess that here in the UK some fly fisheries may not allow flies such as this

    I tie them almost the same way but wrap the body from the excess material of the tail tie in. What is the benefits of tying in the body again? Just curious if they hold up better over time.

    • @MainelyFlies
      @MainelyFlies  2 года назад +1

      I do it because it looks cleaner. I find if I tie in the tail in then use that to wrap the body often times my tails stick out to the side. Not a big deal just an ocd thing

    • @MainelyFlies
      @MainelyFlies  2 года назад +1

      Depends on the fly really id say the average is $3-3.5. A lot of what I tie has tungsten so normally I rig one heavy fly (like my stone fly) and use a smaller one as a point fly such as this one.

  • @PNWLeviathanFPV

    I’ve fished the squirmy wormy so many different times. Oregon, Colorado, California, Washington, Idaho-
    I’ve caught sucker fish off of it. Never a rainbow or brown. Not even an over eager cutty.
    Bass will look at it, if you pull it past a strike zone they WILL take it, but they will hit a leaf on a bait hook too in the same situation.
    Over all- waste of space for nymphs and streamers like Buggers and Princes that catch across the world.

    • @tonyg3091

      Worms DO catch across the world. BUT the trout learn very quickly they are dangerous and stop taking them.
