Back when dark ascension came out, my local card store offered a booster pack each as trade for any archangel's lights you brought in, so that they could send them back to wizards. I don't know if wizards themselves put out a recall for it, or if my LGS just thought it was particularly egregious, but either way, I think it's hilarious

Descent into Madness was niche, but IIRC, it did come in a block where Black had a sorcery to create 13 Zombie tokens, and an enchantment that created zombie tokens on each of your upkeeps equal to the number of Zombies you controlled. So you could use either of those to fuel Descent into Madness for a long time, resulting in your opponent losing their board and hand while you are losing mostly if not completely Zombie tokens.
I always felt like Hellcarver Demon was really built for a deck loaded up on Sorceries and Instants, probably UBR-colored. But I can't imagine that working out well. It's like a twisted one-sided Warp World, but on the wrong side.

Molten-Tail Masticore at number 2? I didn't think it was that bad, but I'll agree it's effects are a bit underwhelming, especially for Commander, but are still ok. At least you get to choose what you discard, and that stat-line of 4 mana of any color for a 4/4 with a relatively inexpensive regeneration cost is pretty good, but that's my opinion.
I sure liked pulling it in a Scars draft during those years. Wouldn't beat a Wurmcoil Engine of a Batterskull just to name a few of the better cards, but it was at least a decent win condition for the limited format.

Descent into Madness's awfulness shows just how important the option to put the counter on Smokestack is. It's almost the exact same card, but must escalate each turn. Exiling is probably worse than sacrificing, but since that's two sided it's not as bad of a change. But the ability to keep Smokestack going forever is what makes it so good, which Descent into Madness can't do nearly as easily.

Now. Is it good in a vacuum? No. Is it even particularly good in general? Not especially. But it's flavorful and useful, which puts it ahead of 50% of Mythic cards and shouldn't earn it a spot on this list.

Descent into Madness seems like it would be good in a token deck; you can build the deck around getting the 'right board state' for Descent to favor you by having a ton of junk to exile, while your opponents don't. You could combine that with symmetrical sac effects (which also favor the same deck type) so that Descent will be eating their lands and hands ASAP.

'Descent into Madness' is a jankier, worse Smokestack, but Smokestack is so good that the bad version is still playable. Had one in a Hapatra EDH deck, it always became a 'must destroy' for my enemies as I could just exile tokens or even cards that I'd draw sacking tokens to Skullclamp. And "Hellcarver Demon" has a janky but fun combo that PleasantKenobi played in legacy, where you reanimate it and hit with it in a deck full of extra attack cards, effectively winning on a turn 2. If it's playable-ish in such a high power format, it's hardly deserving of being in a 'worst mythic ever' list, but that's my opinion.

Wizards defineitly has a different philosophy now, as compared to the story of Archangel's Light lol. They'd lean to print a busted card over a trash card nowadays if they were in the same set of circumstances... out of fear they haven't met their power creep quota lol. Then, they'd just slap a ban on it if it was too out-of-hand 🤷🏻‍♂️

Imho, this problem comes from WotC no longer having seperate teams for designing and developing cards. Their (relatively) new "play design" team - who's cards started to surface first with Throne of Eldraine - is both design and developement in one and I'm pretty sure that this causes a ton of powercreep problems. You just don't have a seperate set of eyes evaluating and rebalancing the cards and who really wants to tell somebody on their own team that their baby is ugly (aka busted) ?

The thing with Kargan Dragonlord and Transcendent Master is that you can use proliferate effects to give them more level up counters as well as pay mana for the level up. Also I have used Dragonlord many times in a Red deck wins type deck and it has won me the game several times. It's nice when the deck is running out of steam(I have a friend that likes his stalling decks) and so I can dump my mana into it and get a big creature that wrecks face if no one has an answer for it.

As someone who started playing MTG (Online) with Alara block, and stuck with it for a few years, it is surprising for me to see how many cards on this list are from that timeframe. Yeah, Arcangel's Light was an obvious #1, but 5 of the rest come from that timeframe as well, and a few of those (Molten-Tail Masticore, Hellcarver Demon, and Transcendant Master) were absolutely dominant cards in drafts, with Transcendant Master also seeing some pretty heavy play as a win condition in Standard UW Control decks I played against.

I found Erebos's Titan played pretty well in a deck that could keep the field fairly clear, and had ways to reanimate an opponent's creature. The fact that the card allows for both blanking of removal of 2 types (targeted destroy effects, which are reasonably common, and burn) if they have no board state is actually a substantial upside vs some decks. I found it's a decent option for Pox if you don't want to run Rotting Regisaur, or if you actually think the indestructibility is good enough to warrant inclusion (or that the recursion is worth it, which it really can be if you can keep the field clear, because it lacks trample). Not saying it's a top tier card, just that it's better than it looks.

Those mythics with Level-Up would be a lot better if you could level up at instant speed, which would allow you to pump your extra mana into them at the end of your opponent's turn. That would make the cards well worth the extreme cost to hit their highest level as you can use mana you weren't going to use anyways, and make your opponent feel less bad about your instants because at least it buys them time before you leveler becomes a larger threat

I think it would see sideboard use at 2 or even 3. Consider how many mill decks are in format right now. A lot of times Rogues for example beats other aggro decks by mill pressure. So a lot of white aggro decks would like to have a couple of copies for game two, because it totally tranform the game if you could push it through the counters. In fact, it would be so meta that rogues would have to slow play to avoid it. I'm you are playing rogue and turn six or seven, white plays a card that puts the 30+ cards you've mill back in their library, and gains 60 life. Suddenly all your race conditions are heavily against you, your spell effects are turned off because they no longer have 8 in the graveyard, and you know that you are facing the same reset in your future.

6 : Well there is 12 madness B/R cards with CMC 5+ so yep good with Falkenrath
5 : With the new pirates in CMRlegend it's hard to justify especially if you also play U, still it's okayish if topdecked in mono-R
4 : Tokens Decks love this Prosh, Thalisse etc...
3 : If you can set up the top of your deck with CMC 7+... DOOMSDAY (evil laugh), I mean the card Doomsday
2 : Ok that's pure unadulterated Jank of Olde, Dredge with Zirda companion ? Memelord ?
1 : Lathiel love this, also a "security" in self mill deck
