Just a suggestion, Riley may want to look into building a rock/soil screen for a future episode. With all the existing raw materials you have on the property, you could probably rock the whole driveway with cleaner material. Design it with a removable screen bed and you’d also be able to size the rock to better fit your needs. I have no doubt Riley could build something like this in just a day or two. And it would probably benefit the homestead for decades to come. Just my 2 cents. Absolutely love this channel!!!
and don't work on roads when they are wet and muddy if you can possibly do it when it is drier. crown the roads also to keep the water from sitting on the road. Add water bars to drain water off the road on slopes.
Thank you so much for the candy we just received in the mail! When we used to live in Atascadero I would buy those all of the time when we made parts runs to the local hardware store.
Turn down your trailer brake controller when its empty. The wheels just lock up and then it slides sideways. I turn the gain on mine most of the way down with an empty trailer. Especially when its slick. Just dont forget to turn it back up once your back on good pavement especially when loaded. Its really a good practice to get used to adjusting the gain when you change trailer loads. The brake controller can be your friend.
I never cease to be amazed at how easily you two build things and overcome obsticals. Really well done! ! ! Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see Courneys finished office space.
For your mud problem near the house, you should install gutters on your house. Gutters will catch and divert all rain and snowmelt away from the house, and putting it either to good use, or somewhere where it doesn't cause you problems.
This just reminds me of my my life. How it used to be. I built my wife 3 or 4 new houses while we were married. Until she started having heart problems. It used to be great.
You krazy kids are phenomenal. It always starts out sketchy but you put your magic spin on it and it works out well. Riley with a little boy to mold in his image; Lord help us! I would say that Courtney would be the moderating factor but when he wants to skateboard down the garage roof, she’ll be like Go for it! You don’t know, you might fly! Keep on keeping it krazy. 🥸👍✅
Just imagine that all projects are done and just out to looking out at beautiful wildlife around you have nothing to do but look at a beautiful day hahaha.
After having enjoyed a bunch of the videos at your Idaho empire, the placement of the house is helping to create the mud hole on the hill,,ie- you've excavated into the hill with the house pad and your equipment storage area, the ground seeps are surfacing in the mud hole,no where near enough drainage on uphill and front of the house. A French drain with filter fabric 6"-8" underdrain pipe would help immensely. But dig out the muck first, then add the rock to stiffen the ground and provide a good base for your road and storage area, and you have all the tools to accomplish the job.
You'd need a heavy duty filtering fabric between the mud and rocks to make it work. Frost will just lift those rocks up every spring. If you don't want to get rid if the mud and put water passing soil and draining, then put the fabric, then some gravel, big rocks, smaller rocks and surface layer. Otherwise mud fill the gaps between rocks.
Carry a tarp or piece of cardboard to apply and remove chains? Also handy for repairs and impromptu uses. Building with pregnant wife, she has a baby he has a hernia!
Courtney, I've been meaning to tell you how much I enjoy your background music and the management there of. Riley, Your welding skills are impressive. I welded on the 100 ton capacity 777 CAT truck back in 97 for 18 months, 12hr shifts. Two 60# spools of solid wire and 1 75# spool of dual shield wire just to weld the frame after all the pieces were tacked together. I've got three welders and love "sticking" stuff together. Again, WELL DONE>
I'm on my binge watch of R&C (Ambition Strikes) videos, when surprise! another one! to brighten up this March winter day. I'm going backwards thru time watching all the videos. It's like a good book you can't put down. I think I only have 100 to go or so... HA! will let you know when I've accomplished my feat! On a side note, I just bought a CNC router, for Aluminum. It's somewhat intimidating, but I've decided to ask the question, how would R&C do it? They'd watch some videos and take it head on.. So that's what I'm doing this week. LOVE YOU GUYS!
Riley you should get chains to put on your trailer when there is any chance of ice. By putting chains on the trailer with slight braking on it the chances are better that it will stay behind you instead of jack knitting and ditching you. That is why you see chains on tractors and trailer rigs on passes up and down grades.
During the winter season it's wise to carry a pair of coveralls in the truck, so that you have a sacrificial layer to get dirty/muddy/slushy that you can take off before getting back in the truck. BTDT, the T-shirt's in the wash!
I wonder if little Riley Jr will be as talented as his dad? The new overhead office can also double as a bedroom for little Riley Jr when he arrives? I was wondering about the 2 ft wide stair case, but as long as Courney does not try to go sideways down the stairs it should be ok!
Ya know. Sometimes for work I have to tell fabricators to just come up with something without proper plans drawn up and it's always hit or miss on if they will come up with something that makes sense at all or if they just grab the biggest piece of steel they could find in the scrap bin. Honestly impressive what you can do on a whim
Might I suggest a set of truck coveralls so you can lay down and then take the coveralls off and have clean clothes to get back into the truck. I used to have to do that to go feed the horses on my in-laws’ ranch. You can keep them in the bed or x-cab portion.
It's not fair! When my wife says my name, I know I am going to get bit! When yours does, she sounds like she is smiling! #blessed 14:11 Damn, champ! Really nice welds there!!! Careful, reckless...your shop is shrinking!!! Courtney, you deserve a bigger window office!
Fantastic video! So much in such a short time. I truly envy Riley's fabrication talent along with his superb wielding skills. And of course Courtney's video auditing skills/talent!
On the first step, yall should put the flooring right above as wide as the desk.. use every space. When coming down the stringer, your head will just miss the joist by a foot.
I am loving the new room as it will give you options for the next couple of years. Even though the stairs are narrow, they are still stairs offering a second egress. I also like the idea of a door at the bottom of the stairs. Note from Chuck: “It’s a good thing they are doing this while they are young because when you get to be my age, you can only enjoy the experience through video!” Have a good week.😘
I worked in industry construction for 10years. I’d of give anyone with your engineering skills double what I was paying my numb skulls to do what you just did. Wow you got the “knack”
The Doggie door needs to be raised due to the concrete floor raising the exit angle for the dogs. If the door is left as it is now it could cause your dogs back issues.. I had to raise my dogs doorway for the same reason.
Just rolling up the views. 4th time playing this video and I still haven't watched it all. Nice to see Bailey dog out and about. Lookin forward to more road making videos this summer.
Woven fabric is a great product for building roadways. Propex makes one we use on County Highway projects. You put it down first and it keeps the mud out of the aggregate. Usually the fabric is equivalent to 4" of rock and does wonders for "mud management. "
I would remove about 5 to 6 inches of the driveway and around the carport, lay down geotec fabric then put rock on top of that and all those mud problems will be solved for decades to come. Plus with the fabric under the rock, you will not have to worry about having to keep putting rock over and over again.
That room should be the baby room. You can put your desk in the baby's room and exercise in the shop. You absolutely need to put a door at the bottom of the staircase for a fire exit.
If you put a set of chains on the trailer and use the brake controller, you can use the trailer brakes to keep you straight. Handy when you have a heavy load going down a hill
Good to keep the stairs. Since you probably going to use the shop as the dirty entrance, where you put dirty shoes and clothes. Because at least in the winter you'd not like to go outside again to get into the appartment
Turn your trailer brake controller down so your trailer tires aren't locked up then it will track behind you better rather than slide to the low side the hole way down the hill. Also can put one trailer chain on and it will help with tracking.
Based on a lot of other channels I have seen, like letsdig18 and diesel creek, to keep the mud from coming up through the gravel, it is best to put a layer of the special driveway fabric down to keep the mud and gravel in different layers vs mixing. otherwise, the gravel will just squish into the dirt and it becomes a slightly thicker muddy mess as you found out. Fun video though, keep up the good work.
Fabricate a slotted sorting bucket for that skid-steer so you can leave the dirt and keep the rocks??? You see them occasionally on demolition dave's videos
Ive built a 30' x 45' barn with a 50% mezz in my head for the pass 30 years, just never had the opportunity to build it for real, but at 2025sq ft living area, you just cant beat it, dollars per sq ft, so watching your build is great, all the best.
Wow you guys have really built an amazing home. Good job. Riley you better start using a back brace or you will end up like me with 26 screws and two rods in my back. Just because you can lift it doesn't mean you should. You will wear your disk down a little at a time. You do have a nice deck to relax on when you are recovering from back surgery. 😉
Congratulation........but MADAME rest is now (somewhat) obligatory . I am very happy for you and your family.😊😊😊 Bon courage and stay safe alll together.👍👍👍👍👍👍
Might be worth fabricating your own screen for road base material to help filter out the fines from your road rock. I just ended up using a sheet of expanded metal laid flat on an angle so the the fines fell straight down and the good rock rolled off into a separate pile. Of course this won’t work very well with mud, so whatever you feed through it needs to be mostly dry.
For future reference. Chains on trailer 1 axle. Use trailer brakes to stop both vehicles. That could of been much worse loaded. Like alway great video guys
mean while... Axle broke on my car, right at the wheel hub it sheared the splined spindle off the CV cup. welded it back together, it's a $64 axle... but shipping was about $900 to get it where i am, $5 of welding rod at being cost of welding rod used with electricity and shipping so $5 was actually $5.
Thank you I have the idea of building the back half of the apartment where the stairs are right now and add the office there and so glad that's what you're doing thank you Philip
I was expecting this build so not a surprise for me. I was surprised that it is going to be a office. I thought you were going to build a room for the baby.
It’s been a while since I dump trucked but when it was a mud bog contractors put down 3”-5” railroad ballast until it locked up like concrete. Then put road bond or gravel on top of that. Until you lock it down it will just eat the smaller stuff.
U might adjust your trailer brake control for less braking when trailer is empty especially going down hill on snow & ice, great progress on your place!
You have to give that water a place to go. What you are doing is filling a pool with rock. You still have a pool of water, now it is just muddy, rocky water. Drain the water to some other place.
@Ambition Strikes You're quite welcome, Sir !!! I anxiously follow you two, on RUclips. And certainly appreciate your relationship, and craftsmanship!! Congratulations on your brewing little one ! Lol. That child will be blessed beyond measure, with all the documentation of his/her parent's experiences, and the lifestyle you are providing!
To help keep the mud at bay lay down Geotechnical fabric meant for roads before dumping gravel. It helps to keep the dirt from mixing with the rock and letting the rocks get pushed into the dirt and the dirt squishing up through the rocks. To help keep the rock in place you can use the various geocell products that use cells to contain the top layer of rock. Really stabilizes the rock and makes it feel like you're driving on concrete.

and don't work on roads when they are wet and muddy if you can possibly do it when it is drier. crown the roads also to keep the water from sitting on the road. Add water bars to drain water off the road on slopes.
How about a rock crusher so you can get a regular size for the road? Would help remove all the larger bits.
Thank you so much for the candy we just received in the mail! When we used to live in Atascadero I would buy those all of the time when we made parts runs to the local hardware store.

They definitely have skills!
Making it look easy.👍
Riley is such a good fabricator! His welds and metal work are pretty darn nice! Great job guys!!!

Courtney, make sure you SUPER soundproof that wall and floor so you can work while Riley is making noise below you.😮😅😊
Just imagine that all projects are done and just out to looking out at beautiful wildlife around you have nothing to do but look at a beautiful day hahaha.
Big windows, a warm firaplace, dramatic nature and stormy weather is an unbeatable combination!
Moving the 24" stairs (I probably would have gone 23 3/4") was definitely wreckless Riley.
Tip of the day, keep a small tarp with your chains. Spread it out before chaining up, you will stay cleaner. Big Hugs!
A sign of a professional is to make their work look easy! Wow, that was easy!

New project! Harvest the automatic tire chain system off an old school bus or emergency service vehicle! Flip the switch, and the chains are "on"!!!
It is also a good spot to put in a Vacuum elevater... for when your knees have had enough of stairs. Good job, kids I mean Mom and Dad...😊
12 hours ago you posted this and already +125k views. You guys are doing something right.
Riley tip...when wet you can use floor mats rubber side up from back seat so you don't wet car seats.
My dude went FULL SEND getting up that hill 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Mud - add 6-12 inches of 3” plus aggregate on top of your mud, then smooth it off by adding another 4-6 inches of fine-to-3/4”

Wont we all be happy when the snow is gone and summer comes
a UNIIMOG, Track drive jeep, Duramax, skid steer, mini excavator!!!!!! Awesome!
Slowly catching up on your videos. We (wifey and I) are enjoying each of them.

We used road cloth on our driveway then rock. That way the rocks/gravel doesn’t disappear into the mud!
With all the things you kids are doing and all the wood you have brought down maybe you should have your own Wood Mizer 70 saw mill.
Riley, your welding beads are perfect 😮
🤣🤣🤣 he told you to film so that you would not be in the vehicle and freaking out at him and he could take a bigger run and risk as you were safe ❤️❤️

Exactly
If you put a set of chains on the trailer and use the brake controller, you can use the trailer brakes to keep you straight. Handy when you have a heavy load going down a hill
You may want to build a screen for separating rocks from dirt then you can use the stones for the driveway and the dirt for fill or a garden
Awesome!! BTW, you need a disclaimer ... "Projects on this channel are not as easy as we make it look ...". ha! Well done and love the scenery shots.
Haha, that's a perfect perch for management to oversee that work is getting done in the shop. 😄 Nice work!
You have no idea where it feels like to see something finished in your mind the way it is thank you for doing this Philip
Riley's hauling ass up that hill!
I say this every time but I sure wish your videos were twice as long. But I know all the editing takes time. Just wishing.
Good to keep the stairs. Since you probably going to use the shop as the dirty entrance, where you put dirty shoes and clothes. Because at least in the winter you'd not like to go outside again to get into the appartment

Come on you have to do more than one video a week we can’t wait till the next one comes out. Jim
That's such a fun video maybe a new baby 's room ? Thanks guys from a very rainy Cambria by the Sea 🤗
Fabricate a slotted sorting bucket for that skid-steer so you can leave the dirt and keep the rocks??? You see them occasionally on demolition dave's videos
You could likely benefit from creating a gantry crane in your shop area … give it full access to the floor space
I think you should make a screening plant so you can process your own stone & soil
this is a great sunday surprise. nice quick start!
Making coffee for my Sunday morning routine. Coffee and ambition strikes!
All those extra trees means you cam make your very own swing set and jungle gym for Baby Casey
And ya'll really need to get a small saw mill. They make them that you can use with a chainsaw. And since you've all all those trees cut already....
My father was a tool and die maker and worked for a company called Wedget in Broomfield, CO. They pioneered the floor fastener called wedget.
Looking good! Very similar to one I just built on our channel except I drug mine out into 4 videos LOL I need a stair jack for sure!
Congratulation........but MADAME rest is now (somewhat) obligatory . I am very happy for you and your family.😊😊😊
Bon courage and stay safe alll together.👍👍👍👍👍👍
Maybe carry a set of coveralls in the truck for chaining up?
Maybe a chunk of Cardboard will help keep you clean when on the ground working. That's what I do.
Love the new office, hate the new mud!! More rocks!!
My favorite RUclips channel ❤
soon in two or three year will be the Boy room
mean while...
It may well get repurposed before it is all said and done... ;)
I love your dogs.
Great welding Riley, those Dimes looking pretty slick.
He is now Rally Riley! Next up Baja 2023!
Pregnant ladys have a special glow around them😉
You have to give that water a place to go. What you are doing is filling a pool with rock. You still have a pool of water, now it is just muddy, rocky water. Drain the water to some other place.
Nice looking welds, Riley !!
Thanks Chris!
@Ambition Strikes You're quite welcome, Sir !!! I anxiously follow you two, on RUclips. And certainly appreciate your relationship, and craftsmanship!! Congratulations on your brewing little one ! It really pays to have the correct tools for the job.
To help keep the mud at bay lay down Geotechnical fabric meant for roads before dumping gravel. This is what we did!
“By perfect, I mean that we have them”. 😂. Always a great build guys. Your just layin around stuff is other people’s treasures.
