Just a suggestion, Riley may want to look into building a rock/soil screen for a future episode. With all the existing raw materials you have on the property, you could probably rock the whole driveway with cleaner material. Design it with a removable screen bed and you’d also be able to size the rock to better fit your needs. I have no doubt Riley could build something like this in just a day or two. And it would probably benefit the homestead for decades to come. Just my 2 cents. Absolutely love this channel!!!
and don't work on roads when they are wet and muddy if you can possibly do it when it is drier. crown the roads also to keep the water from sitting on the road. Add water bars to drain water off the road on slopes.
Thank you so much for the candy we just received in the mail! When we used to live in Atascadero I would buy those all of the time when we made parts runs to the local hardware store.
I never cease to be amazed at how easily you two build things and overcome obsticals. Really well done! ! ! Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see Courneys finished office space.
I like to carry those cheap harbor freight moving blankets in my vehicle. They work great to lay on when you need to hook up a tow strap or install chains.
I am loving the new room as it will give you options for the next couple of years. Even though the stairs are narrow, they are still stairs offering a second egress. I also like the idea of a door at the bottom of the stairs. Note from Chuck: “It’s a good thing they are doing this while they are young because when you get to be my age, you can only enjoy the experience through video!” Have a good week.😘
To help keep the mud at bay lay down Geotechnical fabric meant for roads before dumping gravel. It helps to keep the dirt from mixing with the rock and letting the rocks get pushed into the dirt and the dirt squishing up through the rocks. To help keep the rock in place you can use the various geocell products that use cells to contain the top layer of rock. Really stabilizes the rock and makes it feel like you're driving on concrete.
Gravel helps but proper drainage solves the issue. French drains and underground storage tanks will keep the yard and driveway area dry while draining controlling excess runoff and storing usable water
I love this channel It really helps Because when I’m feeling low I watch and realize it could be worse I could live in idaho And that fact cheers me up😀
I admire you guys, I am a 69 year old rancher in Texas. you have so many good ideas. i am surprised that you did not put a heavy duty hinge at the top of stair case to pull it up out of the way, like old fire escapes. I was a fireman for 15 years, Riley needs a fire pole to just slide down when he is in a hurry. cant wait to see the baby.
I was expecting this build so not a surprise for me. I was surprised that it is going to be a office. I thought you were going to build a room for the baby.
That room should be the baby room. You can put your desk in the baby's room and exercise in the shop. You absolutely need to put a door at the bottom of the staircase for a fire exit.
Thanks much for being such good role models to this current generation who is so afraid of everything. Your devotion to each other, your sense of adventure, and your delight in bringing your new baby boy into the world is an AWESOME example and I hope your subscriber and vier numbers go through the roof!
Riley. check around for a machine- of it could be a Home grown device- in your neighborhood called a "Grizzly'- they separate rock and dirt using different sized screens- that would improve your hard, insoluble rock content, control sizing better and turn your "rocky bonanza" into much more useful fill and construction base. I think you have some more "dozer content" coming. Also more shed building! It's awesome to see you able to use all the tools you've acquired from start up.
Mr reckless. You have great skills! And you make projects fun. Even the trip to town was a adventure. And I know that you loved pulling that trailer up that hill😂and of course Courtney is looking great.
You guys just blow my mind, You two amaze me, your love for each other show's it a great way to start MY day , thank you both for your content. Watching from Washington st.
What an awesome surprise to wake up to this weekend, I knew the mezzanine was coming but didn't realize how quick. You guys absolutely killed it once again! The mezzanine is amazing and going to be awesome having that extra space, so much room for activities! Did you have to remove one of the outlets near the bottom of the stairs? Looked pretty close when putting it in. Hopefully mud season isn't too bad for you guys, it's starting to be more spring like over here (Washington), I'm definitely ready for some nice weather.
Going to be worth all the trouble just to have the safety of another egress. The width is no problem when it comes to your safety! Should make for a great size office and getaway space for Momma Courtney!
Courtney gets a window and Riley gets a dog door. I hope you brought the rest of your building supplies into the shop BEFORE your next storm hit. What are your plans for reconnecting the chimney to its furnace counterpart? You kids are amazing. Wishing you and your family a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings. Peace
I would feel better about that narrow back staircase if you put some shelving/cabinets underneath it to add some additional structural support. I know you're both talented fabricators but you can't be too careful!! Plus, it's a shop. Who doesn't want more storage?
"Forty one seconds into this video, lady mentions winter is not over quite yet as it seem".... I am asking you kids.... are we as the west part of the USA, are we connected to the east coast? They have buds on the trees!!! Ok, pass the popcorn and back to the video!!
Riley, Another great video! One suggestion that may help with the mud: Under the 12' x 34' deck I built recently I added a way to channel the water away from the house. Half of your roof runoff, and all of the deck runoff could be channeled away from the driveway, which could help lessen the mud.
Turn down your trailer brake controller when its empty. The wheels just lock up and then it slides sideways. I turn the gain on mine most of the way down with an empty trailer. Especially when its slick. Just dont forget to turn it back up once your back on good pavement especially when loaded. Its really a good practice to get used to adjusting the gain when you change trailer loads. The brake controller can be your friend.
For your mud problem near the house, you should install gutters on your house. Gutters will catch and divert all rain and snowmelt away from the house, and putting it either to good use, or somewhere where it doesn't cause you problems.
Missed you Guys! Most happy that all is well. The rocks will work but might take more! It is all about drainage! Good Kick Test. Patiently looking forward to "D" day, Delivery day. Ron PTL USA
Well done. That's going to be a nice addition to your living space. Trust me on this, you will be astonished at how fast a baby fills space! Watching the section where the trailer was sliding it occurred to me that you could put chains on some or all of the trailer wheels and it might keep it straight behind you - a major feature if it had a heavy load on it.
I love this idea! It will be so nice to have your own office especially with the baby on the way. Suggestion: add neoprene seat covers to your truck. They're awesome in all kinds of weather (mud, snow, rain, did I say mud?), dirty clothes, baby seats, toddler feet, baby snack messes...a real upholstery saver!
Fabricate a slotted sorting bucket for that skid-steer so you can leave the dirt and keep the rocks??? You see them occasionally on demolition dave's videos
You guys have always been and definitely are an absolute JOY to watch ! Now that you're both pregnant ( btw you are already GLOWING Courtenay) the focus of your movie will change ( getting down and back is now a MUST and no longer can be delayed until your road and the main road clear. Riley's 'job' is to clear 'ground' ahead to facilitate Mom and wee one to get off to a good start, something which he is ideally suited for. I can't wait !!
You'd need a heavy duty filtering fabric between the mud and rocks to make it work. Frost will just lift those rocks up every spring. If you don't want to get rid if the mud and put water passing soil and draining, then put the fabric, then some gravel, big rocks, smaller rocks and surface layer. Otherwise mud fill the gaps between rocks.
You might regret not keeping the stairs at 3 ft wide which would only have reduced the office by approximately 14 sq ft. Just my preference. Hey guys as usual you did an amazing job!
There is a way to put chains on your tires without laying down in the mud. Stretch the chains out on the ground, in front of the tires. Drive onto the chains about half way, then wrap the ends of the chains to the top of the tires.
I love your show, I have a suggestion though. I think it would be wonderful if you guys tried building a rock crusher, if you didn’t build it you could still just buy one and use it for your own rock and change your road completely.
After having enjoyed a bunch of the videos at your Idaho empire, the placement of the house is helping to create the mud hole on the hill,,ie- you've excavated into the hill with the house pad and your equipment storage area, the ground seeps are surfacing in the mud hole,no where near enough drainage on uphill and front of the house. A French drain with filter fabric 6"-8" underdrain pipe would help immensely. But dig out the muck first, then add the rock to stiffen the ground and provide a good base for your road and storage area, and you have all the tools to accomplish the job.
Such a lovely couple, balancing each other out so well! So lovely to see the appreciation for the sometimes boyish energy of Riley all the while the proud and look of loves of Riley for Courtney. Appreciating and accepting each others core energies is the key to lifelong love! Always looking forward to your next episodes!! Love your channel!! All the best from Belgium.
❤ absolutely positively interesting 2 foot wide staircase. That’s pretty cool though the nice job See you’re doing very well. How’s the baby doing? Are you feeling a lot of movement? Very cool love watching your videos. Look forward to more of them. I actually thought that was gonna be the babies room.
Hey guys for the mud problem. Something I instruct my crews to do every night during the mid season is to back blade the area smooth. This allows the water to sheet flow away and not get stuck in the ruts. Once smooth the soil will start to dry out faster when the winds start to pick up.
You guys are awesome!! Do you have a video with your back ground, coming up to all these things? Amazing to watch you! Enjoy your life and we enjoy watching you! Blessings!
When hammering in a threaded stud, unscrew the nut so you're hitting the nut rather than the threaded shaft. That way you won't have to worry about the thread. 🙂 Thanks for the vid. Jim Bell (Australia)
Love sundays its the Caseys day!!! videos always fun good to see Reckless Riley and what hes getting up to next. Can imagine how you feel Courtney,! wanting to help but have to protect you and the new baby. Soo gratefull we can share youre lives with you'all, Love from UK @ 4.30 in the afternoon. x x
Courtney&Casey's basic rule: creativity and ingenuity to make the most of the available space! Necessity is the mother of genius and sometimes it can also give birth to a new tool: "Stair Jack". Riley, run and patent it!😁✌️🥰
Awesome idea to utilize that space for the baby's room. Curious to see the walls go up and how you make use of the windows/lighting already in the shop area. Good thing you know how to weld. Amazing project. Thanks for sharing
Good job on the new addition to your home, Riley is very good with his calculations on the building of your stairs, Courtney it's so nice to see your smiles after his work. Thanks for sharing look forward to the finished rooms.
Nice work. Those stairs remind of the houses my grandparents (oma and opa) had in Amsterdam. All you need to make them "proper" Amsterdam stairs is to at a 90 degree turn at the top and bottom. What you built is safer and easier to use. Good luck getting all the big construction done before the baby arrives. Trust me the 1st year is a life changer. It will be both exhilarating and exhausting. You have both shows to be able to work through big projects together. Your next adventure will be even bigger. Congrats and enjoy!
Cortney, It sure looks like pregnancy agrees with you. You look fantastic. I've noticed this change over the last number of vids. I hope all is as well as you look. Best of luck going forward.
Woven fabric is a great product for building roadways. Propex makes one we use on County Highway projects. You put it down first and it keeps the mud out of the aggregate. Usually the fabric is equivalent to 4" of rock and does wonders for "mud management. "
About your muddy driveway, have you considered putting a geotextile fabric down over the rough surface and then adding about 5" of crushed rock or gravel as your top layer? It should work to keep the top layer of rock from sinking down into the dirt and ending up with mud again. Just a thought, it worked for me.
Not only an office it's the baby room you guys did a good job it's going to hold up very well😊 As for your muddy driveway just keep adding rocks I'm sure you have a lot of rocks around there River Rocks work really good as always stay safe see you on the next one❤😮😊😅😂😍🧔👧👩🦲
On the first step, yall should put the flooring right above as wide as the desk.. use every space. When coming down the stringer, your head will just miss the joist by a foot.

For the facial device, does it include a "significant other"? Asking for a friend! :)

and don't work on roads when they are wet and muddy if you can possibly do it when it is drier. crown the roads also to keep the water from sitting on the road. Add water bars to drain water off the road on slopes.
How about a rock crusher so you can get a regular size for the road? Would help remove all the larger bits.
Thank you so much for the candy we just received in the mail! When we used to live in Atascadero I would buy those all of the time when we made parts runs to the local hardware store.
Riley is such a good fabricator! His welds and metal work are pretty darn nice! Great job guys!!!
I never cease to be amazed at how easily you two build things and overcome obsticals. Really well done! ! ! Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see Courneys finished office space.
My thought exactly! They do make an amazing engineering team!
They definitely have skills!
Making it look easy.👍
NOTE: "Get a Plastic Tarp to lie on, so you won't be lying in the mud, to put-on chains!" From your bud in Oregon
Good day friends
Big windows, a warm firaplace, dramatic nature and stormy weather is an unbeatable combination!
if you ever move the dog door elevate it 6" from the floor. that keeps most little critters out and it is easier for the dogs
I like to carry those cheap harbor freight moving blankets in my vehicle. They work great to lay on when you need to hook up a tow strap or install chains.
Agree I have them in my truck when they get messed up toss them and get new ones they are cheap
Pick up a few used pallets from the box store and put your skidsteer impliments on them-keeps them off the ground and from rusting and freezing !!!
I am loving the new room as it will give you options for the next couple of years. Even though the stairs are narrow, they are still stairs offering a second egress. This is what we did!

Gravel helps but proper drainage solves the issue. French drains and underground storage tanks will keep the yard and driveway area dry while draining controlling excess runoff and storing usable water
Exactly, kinda looks like the road is the main draining ditch. I'm sure Riley has a plan for that.
My father was a tool and die maker and worked for a company called Wedget in Broomfield, CO. They pioneered the floor fastener called wedget.
I love this channel
It really helps

Yup, that's how it's done!!

Making coffee for my Sunday morning routine. Coffee and ambition strikes!
I was expecting this build so not a surprise for me. I was surprised that it is going to be a office. I thought you were going to build a room for the baby.
It may well get repurposed before it is all said and done... ;)
I hope you can isolate the office from the shop fumes (auto, welding etc etc) so you will all stay safe, especially with the workshop doors closed.
Your welding skills are outstanding, is their anything the two of you can't do? Always impressive.
ah the fun of this time of year in the mountains! Slush, mud and ice, what more can you ask for!
So glad you kept some interior stairs, going outside to go up every time would just suck.
Metal fab & Wood combo looks 🔥🔥🔥
You two can build anything!!!
Always a good day when " Ambition Strikes " shows up on my RUclips page!

Yes! Having two ways in and out is a very nice peace of mind.
Yeah, but a fireman's pole would have been more fun, lol!
soon in two or three year will be the Boy room

That’s just amazing!!! Love the stair jack!!!
Wow such a good day congradulations guys.

I LOVE the background music on today's episode! Great editing as always.
The ability and creativity of the two is great, every day your home is beautiful it will be a little paradise in the middle of the forest
I just love your attitude and fun not to mention the right tools 🎉
I love this idea! It will be so nice to have your own office especially with the baby on the way.
Suggestion: add neoprene seat covers to your truck. They're awesome in all kinds of weather (mud, snow, rain, did I say mud?), dirty clothes, baby seats, toddler feet, baby snack messes...a real upholstery saver!
The Mezzanine will be a very cool space. Good work you guys!
You guys have a good attitude…you will b excellent parents….
Awesome…. Thanks for sharing your life…:)
Fabricate a slotted sorting bucket for that skid-steer so you can leave the dirt and keep the rocks??? You see them occasionally on demolition dave's videos

Just my preference. Hey guys as usual you did an amazing job!

Great addition. Really like how the new staircase fits on the side. Very impressed on how organized the shop is!

You may want to build a screen for separating rocks from dirt then you can use the stones for the driveway and the dirt for fill or a garden
