Like some others replying, it's not easy. I did about 12 years operating out of an old airfield near Bicester - massive set up, delivering and collecting demo cars as well as some new lease cars. Covered the whole UK including Northern Ireland; several trips to Inverness and back in the same day. You have to be self motivated, independant and have a sense of humour - rocking up for a collection in the middle of nowhere to find no car, it's an abort, find your way home, you have to larf. Interesting process, luckily you are frugal with the walking & packed lunch as stomping on the motorway services for a coffee & slice of cake would wipe out the profit these days!
I looked into doing this (or similar) and ended up not doing a single job. The driver agency made me jump through ridiculous hoops to qualify to do it and then took the piss massively as I was clearly being used as a last resort, are rather not being used. Waited nearly a week to hear from them then get a call out of the blue asking me to me to be 30 miles away at 8am the next morning where I would meet an inspector and a team of drivers that drive the inspected car to wherever. That's 60 mile round trip and could only be practically done by car at my own expense. Then I get a call at 7am the following morning saying the job was cancelled. A full week later I get a call at 8am out of the blue asking me to be 44 miles away in one hour, so an 88 mile round trip and again had to be at my expense by own car. That's taking the piss but I dropped all the days plans and got in the car. 15 minutes later and ten miles down the road they call again and cancel again. I asked them to take me off their books and delete my data. Final piss take? I started getting dodgy messages asking me if I was still looking for work as they had excellent opportunities for me, they were scams. The agency had clearly leaked my personal and private data.
I used to pick up cars a garage bought. It was quite stressful and some garages were real crooks and generally rude. The money was peanuts but got me out the house with all tickets pre bought and a comprehensive route map supplied. Downside was driving on motorways at night in the pouring rain!
By the time you've taken out your tax and national insurance, lunch and bus fare it's hardly worth bothering but gets you out the house for the day, I'd you had a return trip paying the same or more then worth doing.
I know it's a long day, but it's £90 in your pocket that you wouldn't have sat at home watching TV. Obviously, if you do it above board, you get taxed on that, but it can pay for your groceries for a week.
I done this for years and some days it was easy money but on most days it was a long day. For me, i went back to the desk job and was making similar if not more money with no headache. Did enjoy the driving, but overall wasnt worth the money over time. Only recently i found another driving job with better pay. Waiting to hear from them. Keep it up you doing a great job.
Im looking for some part-time work...this would suit me. Have you any links to the company or platform you use to book jobs? TIA Alan Great video by the way.
Since the ulez expansion as soon as you got off the M1 you were in the zone. Before the expansion though you would of been correct about the roads on the left of the a406 being in the zone. Just so you know for the future 👍
Some years ago, I, too, thought of earning some 'easy money' shunting cars for a well known auction company.... you know the one....Big Con Artists. I was duly invited to their 'induction' where I quickly learned that this 'employment' was the nearest thing to modern day slavery. I politely left before the end (along with a number of other naeve-a-tees) & was so incensed, I wrote directly to their massively remunerated CEO of the day pointing out the obscene disparity between the 'worker drone' payments & her eye-watering salary. It won't come of any surprise to learn that I am still awaiting a response
Hey Rob , great video, good driving skills, nice to see someone pulling back over after an overtake. What company did you sign up with & do you know who else does this as would like to do something like this too , thanks
I worked at BCA logistics for less than 2 months and I was gone quicker than any other job in my life. I was in the office and it was the most draining job in my life, not only that the customers, drivers and driver operations department were also severely unhappy. Looking at how you've only made £7.50 an hour average just shows the problems that arise from this kind of work.
Loved the video - extremely informative and objective. I felt I was with you on your job. Personally I'll keep my Royal Mail job - £202 for a 12 hour night shift. 👍😁
@@jamiehopkinson9166 Unfortunately I can't get a job as a computer programmer - despite once having my own Software company and being the best in every programming course I ever took. And routine office work is far too dull and boring.
Great video. Hats off to you as well. £90 is terrible for a days work doing that. Most people wouldn't get out of bed for that. But what if your route home is going to cost you a lot more? You can bet the dealership is going to earn a few thousand for that one car.
Interesting video mate, not much pay for a very long day, but if you like something a bit different, with presumably cash straight into your bank, then it’s not a bad number. 👍
I’m not knocking the job as I love driving BUT after your travel expenses back,food/drink etc you’ve earned about £80 for 12 hrs which is less than £7ph! That’s not even considering get up & getting home once you’ve arrived back into sheffield! Good luck anyway as long as you’re happy & it’s financially okay for you 👍
Out of interest, are you paid directly by Car Giant via PAYE in to your bank account, via Umbrella company, or do you have the option to invoice them directly from a limited company? The 3rd option would give you the most flexability and control over how you are taxed in terms of income tax and NI, thus saving you some cash.
Thank you for sharing. The £100 seems a bit stingy to be honest especially as you have to fund your own way home. If the train was the only option it would quickly negate your days earnings. Can’t believe they don’t even offer reasonable travel expenses.
A really good Vid straight to the point ! I used to drive an artic for a living though the money wasn’t great I Still enjoyed it ‘ Once again Rob excellent vid though I guess that you get more Change from the RUclips Vid ‘than the Job Itself 🤷🏼♂️
He could have done it all much quicker than this, it didn’t need to take 12 hours, probably could have been done in half that time but that’s how he wanted to do it so he must be happy enough for it to take that long otherwise he could have been quicker.
I used to do this in the 1980s delivering and collecting lease cars for a company called Bowyers in London. A lot of the drivers were out of work actors. I used to use the trade plates for lifts or bunk the train and could make around £70 a day back then. Not sure its progressed money wise much since then.
I used to do this part time for vauxhall car dealers when I was at college in the 80s, I think by the time I had my license a year had driven to most cities in the UK. Sometimes hitched back carrying the good ole red license plate. At least driving the UK roads was more fun then, no speed cameras, less traffic and much better drivers 😊
Enjoyed that Rob. Friend of mine, also in Sheffield, used to do the same but gave up as she felt that it was costing her more than she made so I guess the important thing is to ensure you keep track of your expenses vs your revenue. One other thing, a bit less of the on road experience would be good. It's fine having some in car Nurburgring Nordschleife but the M1 isn't quite the same !! Good start to your film career though 👍
Really intresting. Iv thought of doing this. Its just that return leg is quite a issue. Especially coming through a main trainstation with cancelled services
5 hours of window cleaning you can make £100 maybe thats an option rather than the long day you had, you'd probably earn more in that amount of time as an uber driver just a thought, ditch these rip off merchants.
I enjoyed your video as the first time I watched you ... I wouldn't agree that it is 'easy' money but if you are stuck out of a job and can handle it then it is money.. and as and when you want to do it. You have to balance out the time spent including traveling home and any costs like fares to your home to get a real valuation of whether it is alright to do regularly.
I went to a training day for the same job with another company but I didn't get beyond the first day. They wanted me to do a lot of checks before driving away with the vehicle, too much time being wasted for me.
I was trade plating for nearly 20 years. There are a few smaller companies dotted about that you can work for as self employed but will factor in train/bus fares & taxis as well as estimating how many hours you will be out of the house & paying at a set rate per hour. Admittedly these are few in numbers but they do exist. The likes of BCA & these new companies that do everything off an app will not pay good money for the hours you put in.
its funny how we want what we dont have. Ive been driving for work just over a year and want out, I worked in hospitality before that for a couple years. I have never worked in an office but would love to. 😅
Got to ask what’s easy money in this job🤔 Long hours, having to get to & from train stations, use buses etc to keep cost down out your day rate which I’m guessing is about £90/ £100 a day!!… who would work for that!🤔😳….unless you show otherwise! I know about 5 guys that do this & they hate it but they’re at that point in life where I doubt they would get another job because of age! You’re not living pal, your existing!
Jheeze relax, there's more to life than money. He out and about getting exercise, sunlight and not stuck in an office. It's not for everybody but don't knock his hustle
@@chrisa7045 you say there’s more to life than money🤔… so your happy to go out like this guy & earn FA a day for 10/12 hours yeah🤔 Money makes people happy & rite now as things as they are in the world I think having money & been able to do what you want (within reason) most people would choose!!

@@chrisa7045there really isn’t more to life than money when you have bills to pay……..I do a very similar job but driving a two car transporter earning more like £200 per day (and I never use public transport or have any expenses) this is a mugs game.
did this for 6 months in 2001. Great fun kicking the bollox out of new and not so new cars, no cameras or speed humps,so never got a ticket. Downside was terrible pay and long hours
Thanks for a very informative video Rob. This is something that I am looking into as I need the flexibility it seems to offer. Would you be willing to share the name of the platform you were using? I don't know if you are still doing this or have finished your training and moved onto pastures new, but iether way I wish you all the best for the future.
I did this a few years ago, only had to use public transport twice as I always had a lift back from another driver, a part ex or a hire car waiting at the customers house. Decent job at the time, could make quite a bit at it but zero hours no job security.
So, theoretically you could have got the train for £90 to get home plus food and get £100,sounds a bit of a gamble as to whether you get any pay at all.
I get that it gets you out of the house instead of just wasting your time away watching telly at home. Although it's not a lot of money for the amount of work involved and you were lucky that bus only cost you a tenner. I hope the TAX man has already had his cut or they will be coming after you and your side hustle.
@@Answersonapostcard Surprisingly not as slim as you might think. There has been a new side hustle law made by the government where banks have to disclose any regular payments going into your account, the amount and all your details. If they don't they can be prosecuted. Businesses such as Uber, eBay and Deliveroo etc also have to follow this new law and declare to the government how much you have earned. The government wants a cut of every coin you get from your nice little earner and will stop at nothing to get it.
Interesting video, thanks for the journey. Do you perform any roadworthiness checks for your own peace of mind - ie any brake pads left ? What would you do if faced with a bald non legal tyre
Yes, I gave a basic visual inspection and test drive as part of the appraisal. If anything were not roadworthy, I would report it and the job would be canceled, with full pay to myself.
It’s a great idea , but why is it your job to take pictures etc , that’s surely between the seller and buyer 🤷🏻♂️ anyways what do I know , I could definitely do this , if it paid more , I couldn’t do it for £90 per day though.
The seller has already taken pictures before the dealers make their offer. The photos I take are to confirm the condition of the vehicle, both before and after I've driven it. The reason the dealer waits for my photos to release payment, is to have a 3rd party verify the condition of the vehicle matches what they've been told and that there has been no new damage between when they agreed to buy it and my collection.
That makes you legally liable in any dispute! Not daft are they. If if was photos to prove you had not damaged it, you would not need to supply those pictures to anyone. Are you driving on a trade plate as doing this on your own policy would be extremely expensive and relying on other policies can backfire. I definitely wouldn't be working for that company.
Trade plates do not cover insurance. They only cover tax and a vehicle that has no number plates, although some companies like you to cover the existing plates with your trade plates.
You need to be very careful with no trade plates as when the car is sold to the dealer most sellers will then transfer the V5 into the trade which then voids the tax........this happens all the time which I keep telling this company about, there dosnt seem to be anyway to avoid it tho.
Interesting job, and probably quite fun - but what a shocking rate of pay. It feels like they've just priced it from time arriving with the customer to the dropoff point.
How do you stop the previous owner cancelling the tax by notifiying the DVLA while you're driving It to its new home? They may well have flexible insurance but would it be legal if you got pulled over?
It's part of the contract that they shouldn't cancel it. However, I do a final vehicle enquiry service check just before I drive off. At which point, I have the V5c in my hands, which has the reference number they need to cancel it.
The tax database does not update instantly. The Police wouldn't know it was untaxed. Also it is important to remember that if tax is cancelled mid month, the remaining tax is only repaid from the start of the new month, so technically it has been paid for & the Police really don't care.
Getting back from London is fine but what if it was King's Lynn? Which also begs the question, are you allocated jobs or pick from a menu like Deliveroo dudes? And what is the platform?
I would not drive this car as a self employed contractor unless DVLA confirmed it had been re taxed for 6 months or more. Tax is none transerable. The penalty for diving like this untaxed is points on your license. Customer may cancel the tax online for a refund without the V5 document. You need trade plates to avoid re taxing and to be on the company insurance. No way a company will pay private car insurance without a 4 million policy just to pick a few cars up.
I did this for a few years but had trade plates supplied at no cost from a prestige car dealer. Decent company, decent job, did well out of it but it was zero hours and although I usually got enough work, when applying for a mortgage it made things much harder so I needed a permanent job.
@@oddities-whatnot Yes trade plates avoid the insurance and tax cost for transporting the car. New companies are not taxing or insuring. The driver is resposible for insurance when working as a contractor for car giant
Why would it need to be taxed for. 6 months? If it's same day expiry it's taxed for your journey. If you use trade plates, the plates are on the insurance database.
It,s a cheap way car dealers use instead of transporting a car. Break it down 150 mile job transport be around £320-£380 on a truck , trade platers charge £1 mile plus fuel so be £190/£200. personally £90 for what you did is peanuts , but if your happy with that then it's ok.
Interested to know how it works if you do have to put petrol in the car you're collecting, paying for ULEZ or CAZ and also toll roads? Do you initially pay it and then get reimbursed?
Yes, exactly that. I'd have to pay it and unload receipts withing 2 days to claim it back. I did originally explain this on camera, but I went on a bit of a ramble, so I cut it out 😂😂
Are you directly employed by CarGiant or an agency? There’s so many independent trade plate companies but they all have bad reviews from past employees
Good video. I’ve subbed as I’m curious to see what’s next. As for the job F”@: that! Too much hassle for crap money! My McDonalds and Greggs habits wouldn’t make it worth it. 😂😂😂

I've always said that this is not a young person's game. It's more for people who are interested in exploring the country and driving different cars. I did it for 25 years and thoroughly enjoyed it, and will go back into it as soon as I get my bus pass next month....In today's cynical world, you'd be surprised how easy it is to get lifts off complete strangers, of all denominations, race, colour, creed, age, and gender. Step out of your comfort zone and give it a try, the random acts of kindness will restore your faith in human nature. It offsets the humiliation you suffer at the employer and customers hands, not to mention the character building and sense of adventure aspect. Go on give it a go, I guarantee it'll change your view on life, or your money back!
I would say £90 for the day is pretty bad!! I'm training to be a driving instructor and my franchise school allows me to charge £80 for a 2 hour lesson!
I've got my ADI part 1 booked for the 11th April 😉👍 Out of interest, what area are you and which franchise are you training with? Mine is suggesting £40 an hour, but others in the area are £38, so I wouldn't want to price myself out. I'll be going onto pink badge, but will charge less during that period. It's not £90 for the day though, it's £90 for 3 hours. You don't earn an income travelling between lessons, same as I don't earn anything travelling back here. As I said, I could have lined up another job, and if I were to do this full time, I would have.
£100 😂 no thanks. I get cars delivered to me and this varies from £80-280 inc vat. When car giant doesn't want to pay for recovery £150+ they're getting a man to do it for nothing. £100 is a waste of your time

Were they all convertibles with the roofs stuck down then🤣
Really interesting video Rob, would love to see more of this style!
Good to hear, thanks! 👍
What a nice guy. Great video ty.
By the time you've taken out your tax and national insurance, lunch and bus fare it's hardly worth bothering but gets you out the house for the day, I'd you had a return trip paying the same or more then worth doing.
Why does one need a job to get out of the house?
I know it's a long day, but it's £90 in your pocket that you wouldn't have sat at home watching TV. Obviously, if you do it above board, you get taxed on that, but it can pay for your groceries for a week.
I done this for years and some days it was easy money but on most days it was a long day. For me, i went back to the desk job and was making similar if not more money with no headache.
Did enjoy the driving, but overall wasnt worth the money over time.
Only recently i found another driving job with better pay. Waiting to hear from them.
Keep it up you doing a great job.
the car is not taxed from the moment they are paid. you need trade plates
He has them..
Or he has insurance to cover driving any car
great video, thought about doing this myself on my days off ,but now i know the wage ,i wont be doing that to much risk for very little money.
Im looking for some part-time work...this would suit me.
Have you any links to the company or platform you use to book jobs? TIA Alan
Great video by the way.
You mean BCA?
In the interests of not being sued... I'm not sure , you may well be right 😉
Are you still waiting for a job also lol
Fair play, no moaning just getting on with life and making a living. Nice to see a young man willing to have a go. 👍
@@OCCUPIEDNATION even £202 for a 12 hour shift Is terrible.

I do this job and you can make it pay very well just need some experience
I’m not knocking the job as I love driving BUT after your travel expenses back,food/drink etc you’ve earned about £80 for 12 hrs which is less than £7ph!
That’s not even considering get up & getting home once you’ve arrived back into sheffield!
Good luck anyway as long as you’re happy & it’s financially okay for you 👍
That's very true
That's very true
12 hours work for £90, that's £7.50 per hour, minus the coach. Breaking the law, surely?. Great video though
All his expenses on the job are paid
@@kayrokuno2843 He has to cover his own expenses...
@@kayrokuno2843
Are you sure, out of the 100 pounds he is getting, he paid 8 odd quid for a coach back to blighty and thus is left with 90 quid.
He could have done it all much quicker than this, it didn’t need to take 12 hours, probably could have been done in half that time but that’s how he wanted to do it so he must be happy enough for it to take that long otherwise he could have been quicker.
🤣🤣🤣
I used to do this in the 1980s delivering and collecting lease cars for a company called Bowyers in London. A lot of the drivers were out of work actors. I used to use the trade plates for lifts or bunk the train and could make around £70 a day back then. Not sure its progressed money wise much since then.
Great wiork ethic Rob - pity half of Britain not like that. Hope training and next job go well - you deserve it.
Well done, Rob. The video is interesting, and it's well produced. Best of luck with your training course.
Great video Rob!
It was interesting for sure. Hope you do another one mate.
Thanks! 👍
Yup
Great video! Would love to see more volg stuff
Thanks! We'll have to see how it goes!
This just popped up in my recommended feed, so hopefully that £90 is steadily growing now! Would enjoy watching more of this.
you will become faster and faster
I enjoyed your video as the first time I watched you ... I wouldn't agree that it is 'easy' money but if you are stuck out of a job and can handle it then it is money.. and as and when you want to do it. You have to balance out the time spent including traveling home and any costs like fares to your home to get a real valuation of whether it is alright to do regularly.
I went to a training day for the same job with another company but I didn't get beyond the first day. They wanted me to do a lot of checks before driving away with the vehicle, too much time being wasted for me.
Hey Rob,
Decent video - do you happen to have a link to sign up?
I'm pretty sure some companies pay better than his Rob, plus some of them pay for public transport for the return journey, I'd check it out, Rob.
None pay for the return journey. Pay is about the same on the all platforms.
What companies are these jobs at?
98p a mile my friend gete
I was trade plating for nearly 20 years. There are a few smaller companies dotted about that you can work for as self employed but will factor in train/bus fares & taxis as well as estimating how many hours you will be out of the house & paying at a set rate per hour.
Admittedly these are few in numbers but they do exist. The likes of BCA & these new companies that do everything off an app will not pay good money for the hours you put in.
It's not really a full days work because the coach trip home is just sitting in a seat while you can watch anything you want on your device.
of course its a days work - travel back is part of the working day
its funny how we want what we dont have. Ive been driving for work just over a year and want out, I worked in hospitality before that for a couple years. I have never worked in an office but would love to. 😅
Got to ask what’s easy money in this job🤔
Long hours, having to get to & from train stations, use buses etc to keep cost down out your day rate which I’m guessing is about £90/ £100 a day!!… who would work for that!🤔😳….unless you show otherwise!
@@chrisa7045 you say there’s more to life than money🤔… so your happy to go out like this guy & earn FA a day for 10/12 hours yeah🤔

Would you be willing to share the name of the platform you were using?
I don't know if you are still doing this or have finished your training and moved onto pastures new, but iether way I wish you all the best for the future.
What website did you use for the jobs
What are you training for? Would imagine it be hard to do any learning after a long days driving and walking. Hope it all works out.
I did this a few years ago, only had to use public transport twice as I always had a lift back from another driver, a part ex or a hire car waiting at the customers house. Decent job at the time, could make quite a bit at it but zero hours no job security.
what was the platform called you use for the car delivery? also what job are you training for now?
So, theoretically you could have got the train for £90 to get home plus food and get £100,sounds a bit of a gamble as to whether you get any pay at all.
So what is the app or company you work for to get these jobs?
Time stamp for the lane discipline?
a lot of grief for £90 imo
Long drive. A long walk. Fortunately it wasn't raining. And a 3 hour bus ride home all for £90. That's a very long tiresome day for £90
I get that it gets you out of the house instead of just wasting your time away watching telly at home. Although it's not a lot of money for the amount of work involved and you were lucky that bus only cost you a tenner. I hope the TAX man has already had his cut or they will be coming after you and your side hustle.
Any idea how many millions of people are working at the gig economy? Chances of being investigated are slim.
Do you get your expenses back for travel back home on public transport?
How do you get into a job like this ? , where do you apply ?
Hi what company did u sign up for it mate

How do you stop the previous owner cancelling the tax by notifiying the DVLA while you're driving It to its new home? They may well have flexible insurance but would it be legal if you got pulled over?
It's part of the contract that they shouldn't cancel it.
However, I do a final vehicle enquiry service check just before I drive off. At which point, I have the V5c in my hands, which has the reference number they need to cancel it.
And what if they took a picture of the relevant section of the V5 document beforehand?
Road tax is non endorsement offence
Why would it need to be taxed for. 6 months? If it's same day expiry it's taxed for your journey.
If you use trade plates, the plates are on the insurance database.
@@ForecourtFilms No trade plates. Tax is only for the last owner. Contractor cannot be on a company insurance. 6 or 12 month is the tax duty?

£90 net profit for a day’s work? This is well below the minimum wage. Anyway that’s for your honesty and sharing your knowledge..
I've just quit my day job to and I would be interested in doing this job do you have any information you could provide if how to do this as a job
I would say £90 for the day is pretty bad!! I'm training to be a driving instructor and my franchise school allows me to charge £80 for a 2 hour lesson!
I've got my ADI part 1 booked for the 11th April 😉👍
Out of interest, what area are you and which franchise are you training with? Mine is suggesting £40 an hour, but others in the area are £38, so I wouldn't want to price myself out. I'll be going onto pink badge, but will charge less during that period.
It's not £90 for the day though, it's £90 for 3 hours. You don't earn an income travelling between lessons, same as I don't earn anything travelling back here. As I said, I could have lined up another job, and if I were to do this full time, I would have.
Robbery.
But plenty of people only earn £400 to £500 a week so it doesn't sound too bad. It's not back breaking work but yeah maybe a bit of hassle.
Nuff to get a fix anyway.
