Thank you for sharing your perspective on Portland. As an Oregon native I would be hesitant as a solo female to explore downtown Portland. The magnitude of the homeless population is staggering. Powells is a treasure in the city. My family can make a full day of exploring their book selection. ❤

Sadly this issue is not unique to Portland as the growing mental health crisis in the world affects so much. Hoping for better days for all ❤️

Portland is not Detroit. It doesn't even make the top ten US cities for crime. I can't wait to come back.

@@johnnyg1933 I used to live on the other side of Puget Sound and found downtown Portland and downtown Seattle to be very similar. My favorite seafood restaurant in Oregon is called Local Ocean and is on the coast.

Your video came up on my suggested videos and the title Portland caught my eye so I watched. I am a single female who lives and works in Downtown Portland. There are definitely areas and people around that can be sketchy but following your gut and getting out of a situation that you don’t feel safe in is the best advice. I love living in Portland and refuse to give up on it. It was nice to see Portland through someone else’s eyes. Hope you had a good time!

@@WithWonder Yes agreed, the social issues just sadden me. We used to live in an area called Bald Peak outside Hillsboro. On a clear day, one could see five mountains from our hazelnut/walnut farm: St. Helen’s, Hood, Ranier, Adams, and Jefferson. It was paradise on earth and we started our family and had 5 children there. Oregon is always close to my heart. ❤️

Portland is more densely forested than Seattle where I relocated from. tons and tons and tons of trees all over the city.

I’ve lived in Portland for about 3.5 years now! About 15 min walk west of Powell’s is the neighborhood I live in- the NW/Nob Hill area. Lots of cute shops and cafes here, and it’s next to two beautiful and large parks with trails that you should check out next time! Portland’s strength isn’t in its downtown, but the different unique neighborhoods on both sides of the river. Lots of pockets with great bars and shopping and food! On a clear day you would have had a stunning view of mount hood from the riverfront!

I was also in Portland back in October! Was there for a conference but had some time to explore the city by myself. I loved it. Coming from LA, the homelessness situation wasn’t much different. But I was cautious and alert like at any trip I take. I did a ghost tour of the downtown area and it was really fun.

In my era in Vancouver the homelessness was intense too. Thank you for this insight into Portland. ** Wondering what you may have on the cards for 2024 and appreciate this is maybe out of your interest but would love to also see places such as Santa Barbara and towns set up for cycling and beautiful places in the USA. Those hidden or not-so-hidden gems. Thank you for all your work this year showing us an amazing world !!

I’ve heard that about Vancouver too. I never made it into the downtown area there so I didn’t see it so much. Sadly, homelessness is on the rise in many places 😕

i’m a long time viewer and a portland native and i just want to point out for other commenters the area around downtown and especially the downtown voodoo donuts is definitely among the worst of portland’s homelessness crisis. all the services are there and transit so it makes sense. further out it is much calmer and feels more safe! there is homelessness everywhere here and it’s hard to ignore but it also has lovely pockets. just wanted to offer another perspective! 💖

We have lost soo much of our beautiful city to drugs and homelessness 😢. Hopefully someday we will get our city back. I live near the gorge so its a different life now days compared to Portland. So sad

We lived in Washington State for a few years and traveled down to Portland, Oregon. The population of homelessness is ever growing. It's sad how the governing individuals of Oregon (as well as Washington State and California) turn a blind eye to all the homelessness and drugs.

My sister lived in Portland for 13 years until 2021. It's not what it once was. And it's very sad the Liberal leaders have allowed it. Her car was TOTALED while parked on a downtown street due to a PEACEFUL PROTEST. She worked in a clinic as a RN and provided care for a lot of those who are living on the streets. Hard Pass!!!!
