      It's a terrible standard for how you interact with people in personal and business life. If I am 10% sure someone is hurting children, I am not going to provide them access to those children until I'm 100% sure they aren't.

    It's crazy. Danny Rensch says he cheated on the site yet is trying to rehabilitate him and allows him to return to events. SLCC and USCF say he never cheated yet are trying to shut him down and block him from all events. The difference in standards is wild. A year or two banned from the site would have been fair, a year cut from all events (who claim he played fair) whilst he tries to reimburse the parties isn't. USCF really shouldn't even be involved with any of it yet they're trying to step in based on hearsay months down the line.

    The hotel incident reflects badly on the event organizers. Even if he apologized and paid, it doesn't 'uncrumple the paper', it just smooths things out again. If somebody ran into your driveway, totaled your car, but apologized profusely and wrote you a cheque for it, it still isn't the same as never having done it.
    Staying in the hotel's good graces is important to the Chess Club hosting so they can do future events there.

      @dmitripogosian5084 2 месяца назад +13

      Not a perfect analogy is that you are an innocent bystander having nothing to do with situation. The hotel is in the business of accomodating guests, including difficult one, and dealing with damages is part of doing business. So there is no emotions involved, charge the guilty party, call repair crew and move along. It is like you were renting your car and the client totalled it. You should not be emotionally attached to your rental fleet.

    @exceligence 2 месяца назад +6

    Multiple things not mentioned here. Didn't mention until much later that he paid for all his damage. So first and foremost, he damaged property. Then he paid for damages. There are multiple facts about this. Fact 1 = consequences for this behavior would be totally valid. There are probably rules in other sports for doing something like this. But especially chess, there should definitely be a severe penalty for this behavior. Such as a year ban. Fact 2 = you cannot give anybody any consequences for something that is not a rule. Rules need to be clear in advance with consequences known. Proven with a signature agreeing to rules. If there is nothing in writing that defines the rule and consequences, then it is unethical to punish somebody for not violating any rules they can be proven to be aware of. Fact 3 = if this was anybody else like Magnus who did it, they would receive no consequences.

Yes obviously he admitted to cheating when he was younger in online games but that doesn’t mean he should be accused of cheating for the rest of his life. We’ve all made mistakes when we were teenagers. Hans has proved himself in over the board tournaments countless times, and he also recently lost to levy in an online blitz game, you really think he’s cheating? Losing to a lower rated player like levy is embarrassing for him (even grandmasters are human tho, especially in low time format- mistakes are bound to happen), if he was truly still cheating he wouldn’t have let that happen. Hans wins against top players but he also loses his fair share as well, he’s legit.

    Love him or hate him, he is objectively good for the chess world. He puts chess into the news, and draws in viewers. Even if it's just a "Oh what did he do this time????". There's no such thing as bad publicity as they say. Besides he's a 20 year old kid, and this was a mistake which he owned up to and paid the price for out of his own pocket to the hotel. Look at John McEnroe in tennis. It's a bit of an older reference but he brought in American viewership. I feel like Hans does the same thing as a young and rising talent.

    • @dpakj989
      @dpakj989 2 месяца назад +1

      No he really isn't. Cheating poses an existential threat to the game; similar to match fixing games in sports for gambling. Just as much as sports leagues come down hard on matchfixing, chess needs to come down hard on cheaters. Regardless if you believe hans cheated or not, the fact that there is a perception that cheating is rampant and Hans was so flippant about it is a severe problem for the chess world. Its the wrong kind of publicity.

    • @A_Mystery_Man
      @A_Mystery_Man 2 месяца назад

      No need to wear a tinfoil hat for that, Hans behaves in a way that most orgs would already be wary of associating with him. The scandals on top of it were what broke the camel's back. Magnus already pulled the "I won't play there while he is there" card when the drama originally happened so if that didn't invoke a response from them then I'd say he isn't doing much else about it now.

    Thank you for being honest about the situation. You cannot punish a guy (in this case Hans Niemann, but could be anyone) for an action that took place outside of a chess tournament that had nothing to do with the chess club or tournament, at least in the sense that the context of the accusations against him are not threatening to harm individuals or places in general. It is ridiculous to me, and personally i think STLCC just feels the need to play arbitrary about Niemann to avoid drama after going through a lot of speculation revolving around former employees. I appreciate everything that STLCC has done for chess, I truly do, but they are striking the wrong chord with this one.

      Actions mean everything. Being a murderer doesn’t have anything to do with chess, but you still don’t invite the known murderer to chess events. You also don’t want a guy known for damaging property in a scene requiring a good relationship between our community and the people providing us places to stay. Hans seems to have half-a-dozen ways to play and win. That's a clear sign of his strength. His particular way (recently) of playing against 2650+ opponents is perfect, but a bit messy-looking. I see that he has taken up an idea Bent Larsen used a lot: a passed pawn to deflect opponent defenders, and then switching to the attack on their king. He did it in a couple of those games. Larsen appeared extremely tactical and provocative, but he also had a subtle strategic sense, or he wouldn't have been a top player. His Meran and Queen's Indian games were always interesting. But, as for maintaining the tension until weaknesses appear, that's a Garri Kasparov specialty. He could walk on the edge of a knife without spilling a drop of blood. Then, when he sensed his opponent's blood -- KaBoom. He was all over them. I really liked the passed pawn game. That was fantastic, classic technique. It reminded me of the last Fischer-Petrosian game!!! He ought to maybe look at how Fischer played the Rossolimo against Spassky in 1992. Ideas from that may add to his handling of it.

    In the given position from the last game after 5...0-0, Anish plays 6. b3, Wesley and Levon both play 6. d4 and Artemiev plays 6. cd followed by 7. b3. I would not call that unusual. Hans' response of ...Bf5 and ...Nbd7 is somewhat unusual though, with the stem game to this one (admittedly by transposition from a Nimzo-Larsen) being Artemiev-Tang 2021. In that game, instead of 11. Qc2, Vladislav continued 11. Re1 a5; 12. a3 Nc5; 13. Qc2, eventually winning in 55 moves. The big difference in these 2 games is that Artemiev got in a timely e4, allowing the latent dynamism of his position to be released.
