The internet is a wonderful thing, but we the human race are not ready for this yet. The last years sadly show us so. More and more things, malevolent and plain stupidity not to mention hate thrives on the internet. ….. whether or not this is the case in this instance i don’t know. They were probably like in the middle of the river too hard to paddle to get to the edge. Who knows but they ignored the dangers. I’ve been tubing before got my self out before the dam pretty scary stuff. Will never do it again.only short distance. Water is not for humans.
The relatives and friends need prayers now because they are suffering for their loved ones and they are probably feeling anguish and distress. May our lord Jesus Christ give them peace and healing in this terrible time.
Yeah, now we need safety warnings on the tubes. That is why you start tubing below a dam. But I bet lawyers will be suing Duke energy for not taking safety measures to stop idiots.
No one had life jackets on? Or a phone in a safety case? You always got to be prepared for the worst. This is so sad.. I hope they find the 2 missing people..
Not to mention multiple people did not know how to swim, and it was night time when they decided to do this, a whole bunch of stupid mixed together to create a very dangerous situation
They didn't go at night. They were still in the water at 7 pm when this happened, which at this time of year it's still light out. The 4 that they found alive had been trapped there in the water for over 19 hours. You could have found this out by doing a simple Google search. J T has already stated this comment
Where 's the bowey's(sp?) to show the upcoming dangers.? Or is it only in crazy California were we warn people of these things better than a sign on the side of the bank. ?
You're kidding me! A seven year old?! WTF they are a dumb group of adults that put their children in a deadly situation for fun, simply put. RIP I feel so sad for those poor children. It's a terrible tragedy, but the surviving adults that were responsible for watching those children need to be held legally accountable
Some of these comments must be paid by Duke energy or local forestry officials. No where on this video did the reporter or the sheriff say the family went tubing at night or did not have a life jacket ...or couldn't swim. Anyone who is saying such things are being paid. Plus, no family members are on this video to back up those lies. Also, if the river had signs posted nearby warning the public about the dam; ... then where are the pictures of the signs? I would like to know how big the sign is and what was actually written on the sign and whether the sign was visible at an appropriate height and placed near where tourist could read it. The reporter said there was "a sign" but didn't seem sure whether that was true.
As a safety precaution to those who have abandoned all good common sense, stretch a high visibility cable from bank to bank, mounted to heavily secured concrete posts, about 20 or 30 feet before all low-head dams as a last resort. Run the cable through those large orange balls that you see on cables over highways to warn low flying aircraft. Suspended a couple of feet above the water, with the ability to maintain this constant height above the water level by a flotation system integrated into or near the anchoring concrete posts on the bank. If it saves 1 life, it is worth it!!!
Well if they are leaving for the night I guess it's become a recover mission. Because it's insane to think if those ppl were alive somewhere in the water that they are going to hand on all night for them to come back in tomorrow morning.
When I worked in the fire service we had an incident when two young girls were floating on some Styrofoam down the Mississippi that they had obtained from a construction site the water didn’t appear to be moving very fast but then they came upon a barge one of the girls got stuck on some of the branch debris in front of the barge the other one went under it and that was the end of her it was very sad and there was nothing anybody could do once that occurred
Why not have a cable strung across from one side to the other 3 feet above flood or high level with multiple signs on it warning of the dam? Usually there is a sign on the bank, overgrown by foliage that everyone misses. This might be a problem with fallen trees in the river but would give someone who made a mistake a chance to survive.
That one is an absolute beast! Look at how big that boil line is. Nearly impossible to escape that. How terrifying! I wonder how deep the water is between the dam and boil zone
This one is the worst I've seen. The boil is unusually tall and vicious looking. Can't help but want to test it with a creature craft. I think one of those boats could defeat it. But naaah I'd probably chicken out at the last minute.
A man made obstacle was placed in the water that makes the navigation of that water dangerous. Nothing in the design of the dam was included to create any safety apparatus for people in the water.
I mean I can think of 4 or 5 really good signs to keep you from going over. Big skulls, the word Death, maybe a 12 foot picture of a graveyard, at least some people can enjoy some nice artwork while they go over the low head dam.

@@lindalauer1434 The people who went down the river...they should've at least had life jackets on!
@@tamjeanell If they went down the river, yes, with that many people on two rafts, they would be smart to put on life vests.
Why would these people be on this dangerous place. There were warnings.
This is a guess. And only that. …. But the trend is. That dangerous things are becomming more appealing because of social media, because the hunt for likes and admiration from others when you can make some kind of documentation. …. The internet is a wonderful thing, but we the human race are not ready for this yet. The last years sadly show us so. More and more things, malevolent and plain stupidity not to mention hate thrives on the internet. ….. whether or not this is the case in this instance i don’t know. But it is comparable with people stepping close to the edge of a cliff to take the perfect selfie. Only to fall down and kill themself.
Yes there were. My guess is they didn't understand the whole concept of low dams. No one took the time to check it.... Maybe they had more strong swimmers with them, thinking they had upper hand... I'm unsure exactly, just unfortunate 🙏🏽🕊️🕊️🕊️
The problem is they were not thinking correctly if they see warning signs correct your mistake before it bevomes a tragedy
I don’t think they were reading anything they were probably chatting and by the time they realized the water took them. They were probably like in the middle of the river too hard to paddle to get to the edge. Who knows but they ignored the dangers. I’ve been tubing before got my self out before the dam pretty scary stuff. Will never do it again.only short distance. Water is not for humans.
Prayers for the families in Jesus Name 🙏🏼😢
@T Woo unlike u I believe in the power of prayers that’s why
The relatives and friends need prayers now because they are suffering for their loved ones and they are probably feeling anguish and distress. May our lord Jesus Christ give them peace and healing in this terrible time.
That water looks nasty.
Yeah, now we need safety warnings on the tubes. That is why you start tubing below a dam. But I bet lawyers will be suing Duke energy for not taking safety measures to stop idiots.
The warning sign was overhead before the dam
Signs are the safety measures. Just like stop signs. If you don't stop and get in a wreck, you can't sue the city.
Wear a life jacket all water time. Never go over damns.
Dams
Who thought it was a good idea to go over a dam without life preservers on
Parents with no common sense
Future episode of 1000 ways to die.
Lots of people feel if they can swim, they don't need a life vest.
@@colleb95 yes I agree, even the best swimmers overestimate their situation.. 😔
@@chisholmtrailrides4602 I absolutely agree.. its so sad..
They didn't go at night. They were still in the water at 7 pm when this happened, which at this time of year it's still light out. The 4 that they found alive had been trapped there in the water for over 19 hours. You could have found this out by doing a simple Google search.
J T has already stated this comment
There's a reason they're commonly referred to as death machines
My condolences to their family.
In the moutains we have around 15 go over waterfalls each year warning signs everywhere
Rod Carter used to be on NBC NEWS CHANNEL 8 IN TAMPA FLORIDA!!! I ALWAYS WONDERED WHERE HE WENT. NOW I KNOW.
Do stupid things win stupid prizes.
Tubing near dams...stupidity
It makes me so sad people are so stupid..
Low head dams are very dangerous.
Why do you tube near a dam? WTF? Nasty looking water - I wouldn't go in it for anything...
Why wouldn't you research your route before putting your children in the water???
UMMMMMM, how do you float "UP"stream??? also that is not a Dam its a weir
These Derelict Dams are throughout Pa, and should be removed. Bless the families.
You can't see that sign, it's all over grown. Those lost had just moved here and was thier first time on this river. They had no idea there was a dam.
Sucks man but eh Thats life
Well if they are leaving for the night I guess it's become a recover mission. Because it's insane to think if those ppl were alive somewhere in the water that they are going to hand on all night for them to come back in tomorrow morning.
7 years old and dead because of idiot adults that were responsible for keeping them safe.
It's not how dangerous the water can be it's how stupid people can be
What a horrible tragedy. And also how stupid people can be
When I worked in the fire service we had an incident when two young girls were floating on some Styrofoam down the Mississippi that they had obtained from a construction site the water didn’t appear to be moving very fast but then they came upon a barge one of the girls got stuck on some of the branch debris in front of the barge the other one went under it and that was the end of her it was very sad and there was nothing anybody could do once that occurred
Where is this???? Can’t u report more thoroughly!
Why would anybody want to go in that doo doo brown water disgusting.
May this be a lesson for everyone, safety rules are there for a reason. Please adhere to them and save lives
I almost drowned while tubing ..never stepped foot in that type of 💧again
That one is an absolute beast! Look at how big that boil line is. Nearly impossible to escape that. How terrifying! I wonder how deep the water is between the dam and boil zone
This one is the worst I've seen. The boil is unusually tall and vicious looking. Can't help but want to test it with a creature craft. I think one of those boats could defeat it. But naaah I'd probably chicken out at the last minute.
Seems like they have a real good sheriff there. Doing the best he can.
Three teenagers died in my town in the 70's the exact same way. One lived a few houses down from us
So sad that kids died too.
Lord...Some of those rescue workers are so fat, they wobble when they walk. Bless them for their service.
A man made obstacle was placed in the water that makes the navigation of that water dangerous. Nothing in the design of the dam was included to create any safety apparatus for people in the water.
It’s a terrible engineering mistake.
I mean I can think of 4 or 5 really good signs to keep you from going over. Big skulls, the word Death, maybe a 12 foot picture of a graveyard, at least some people can enjoy some nice artwork while they go over the low head dam.
Following a fool is dangerous.
Great newscast. Will be helpful for others in the future.
And don't eat paint.......it's not good for you
people have no idea. especially young people.
I think your supposed to go over in a barrel
Sheriff knows they drown and now just waiting a few days for the bodies to float.
Everyone should have been wearing life jackets. Especially the kids!
A life jacket can trap you in these kind of circumstances.
@@patwest1815 that's a possibility. Out of all the things that can go wrong on a river, drowning because they didn't have a life vest is pretty high up on the list of statistics.
@@fantastictoad8853 I agree, but if you ever find yourself in this predicament you may need to jettison the PFD so you can swim down and out.
@@patwest1815 yeah, this is also important to know if you're ever on a plane the has to resort to a water landing or crash to have the pdf on but don't pull the handle until you've made it out of the vessel.
Why are people tubing down that Big River. Were the People taken by a guide or just on there own. I am so Sorry for Everyone and The Families. I am Praying for Everyone.
Dry up
I agree that tubing is best in creeks, not rivers.
Smh...Lord...people please dont play with dangerous waterways. And 30 year olds, you're suppose to WARN younger people about the consequences of stuff like this.
