There is a book series which I dropped because the author started making every character who wasn't already in a long term relationship to be LGBT (even straight characters) and it got to the point where I just stopped caring due to how much it was overtly impacting the story.
It reminds me of some complaint I read on a different author's blog when they were complaining about editing (read: trimming down the story). It basically boiled down to "you should be removing everything which does not need to be in the story and chucking it unless you are deliberately trying to make a bookend."
Something you add to virtue signal is inherently something that should be on the top of what gets cut out.

Nothing kills my immersion more in 40k than implying anyone in the imperium of man would waste time and resources on becoming genetically useless... This is straight up and impossibility in the dystopian future where pragmatism is at the very least necessary.

Well, not entirely. The elites of hive sprawls, the planet governors, they already have access to the best medical tech available in the Imperium. Their lives get extended by a few hundred years with augmentation and rejuvenation tech, so in this case, I could see some of them having the means to transition.
But a common citizen? The average Joe in 40k is either a peasant in a feudal world, a worker drone in some manufacturum, or a dweller of some hive city. They barely get any food, let alone access to transition surgery. And I say this being fairly new to the lore, but these woke idiots don't care about the lore.
In addition, and probably the most relevant reason why is that the Imperium is a Religious institution; this practice would be treated as heresy. It isn’t speculation either, the threat of gender ideology exists, an entire chaos God- Slaanesh, revolves around it; the God of hurt feelings. Unfortunately in the Grimdark, these people would be viewed as heretics, similar to how witches of old might have been treated by the Church. It’s just a setting as edgy as any other, if the Medieval Catholics in space vibes isn’t their thing then they obviously don’t have the right to change it, and “make things ok”.
Its not impossible for the upper echolons of a hive world whos greatest trouble is to chose the Amasec for today...
But I guess the other 20 billion on that planet will have other daily troubles other than their gender or sex. Survival for example

That notion of 'not stooping to their level' is a fallacy and it's the very same fallacy that's landed us exactly where we are. We've spent years trying to LARP as the moral superiors, as the 'better people', but what has that gotten us? Nothing. Less than nothing, because what that really means is 'do nothing and let these people walk all over you'.
I don't understand why Warhammer, of all things, would be an avenue they'd choose to attack. It's grim, it's dark, it's a hellscape where nightmares have broken free of dreams and have permanently settled in reality. It's a universe where death is counted in billions and only an ironclad resolve to do anything it takes to survive, no matter how cruel or brutal. What would possess a person to think that canonically there's room for "progress," but then again I know they don't care so long as the message is pushed.

The simple answer is make your own escapism. These people do not own the copyright on creativity. Make your own games. Sell them, if you can. There's a thriving market for tabletop and board games right now. It's a shame GW has made it clear that they don't want your money any more, but there are plenty of other products waiting in the wings to take their place when they die.

I was a child when Halo came out, and grew up enjoying the progression of the story till it changed hands to 343. Along the way, I learned of WH40K and loved it as it relates to my interests to sci-fi and fantasy alongside my similar growing love for the Star Wars franchise.
It is now 2024, I have witnessed the destruction of Star Wars to "modern" writers, and the butchering of Halo to the insanity of exploring an AU. Then here comes 40K, taking blatant steps to appease newcomers and hope there'd be enough to replace the old customer base.

These books mean *nothing* to me. They don't exist as far as I'm concerned.

In any other context, I'd be fully convinced that "romance" part here is to villianize and to show hipocrisy of the knights, painting outwardly good / noble guys as rotten to the core and having their dirty laundry hidden beneath gleaming armor. Which would actually be quite a good narration if you are writing for a dark fantasy. But with all this woke crap, it's probably what you've describe it as - normalization. Hell, the world we live in, where everyone is going to tell you that black is white and white is black.

@@PatrickOMulligan I'll tell you one thing, I love 40k, but the normalization of the worst kinds of carnage imaginable on a regular basis is what makes it so horrifying and intriguing. I might be considered somewhat of a tourist, but in my experience the violence rarely comes off as anything than showcasing how horrifyingly flippant all races view attirition in the galactic meat grinder, with occasional bouts of heroism in the fight against annihilation. It has come off, at least to me, in no way a neutral statement.

The Imperium of Man doesn't care about your race or gender, as you're just meat for the grinder. There are entire female factions. Every race is represented, and always has been. Current day politics has no place in 40k. Individuality isn't exactly a thing there for 99.99% of humanity, by necessity.
This is what makes it "grimdark". This is what drew me to the genre nearly three decades ago, and is why I've spent thousands on miniatures, codexs, ect. Why should we let people who have not made that investment in time and money arbitrarily change lore which has stood for decades for some imagined petty political gain?

We've been taught to consider discrimination & persecution bad words & bad concepts that should be avoided at all costs, but sometimes, both are *justified* ; in Classical Greece, they actually had to pass a law against adult teachers having sexual relations with their child students specifically *because* alphabet teachers had shown themselves to do exactly *that* with their child students; yes, even back *then* , alphabet community types were known to prey on children.
