It's pronounced Tames as in James or Tems as in gems, or something between those two pronunciations.
And it's Gibralter with a soft G. Pronounced Jibraltar.

Oops...at 8:13 when I am discussing the 15 landlocked countries of Europe, I included a note that it would be 16 if Albania is included. This is incorrect. Albania is NOT landlocked as it has over 176 miles of coastline with the Adriatic Sea. I meant to write "Armenia" which IS landlocked. It was not counted in the 16 as many argue that Armenia (along with Georgia and Azerbaijan) is in Asia and not Europe as it is south of the Caucasus Mountains. I need to fire my editor! Apologies to all.

The Danube River is much longer than you have indicated on the map. It starts near the Black Forest of southern Germany and is an important transportation hub that flows through Austria (Vienna) and Hungary (Budapest). The Rhein River runs along the Swiss and German border. Also there is the Elbe River, that should be on the map as well. Those central European countries are not that landlocked!

      Katharina,
Yup. I got home and saw your comment and the first thing I did was to open up QGIS. QGIS is a Geospatial Information System that I've been using to make my maps for my videos. I use the physical features from Natural Earth--wonderful free GIS resource.
Sure enough, I forgot to add in the western five segments of the Danube River onto the map that I used for my video. Drat!
Thanks for keeping me honest. I'll correct when I get around to updating the video.
Thanks for caring enough to post.

Really nice video. It's so good to see a region of the world that doesn't include political borders. Oh, but as an Englishman, I must point out that the river that runs through our capital isn't pronounced 'Tim' it's pronounced 'Tems'. And I'm not sure but I think the river that runs through Paris is pronounced 'Sane'. Great video, thank you.

Great lesson. 2 tiny nit picks.
The Trojan war was fought around 3200 years ago, not around 2500 years ago.
The Alps are due to African plate colliding with the European plate. There is no such thing as the continental plate of Italy, though it is easier to explain the concept the way you describe it.

You don't pronounce Thames 'tim', it's 'temz'.

And also the Seine isn't pronounced "Sin" but something between "Sane" and "Sen"". English speakers usually just call it the "Sane".

I was watching this video because I was amazed that you can go from The Netherlands to the Black Sea on a boat. I w!as reading about in a cruise advertisement. I was thinking ... "you mean in 2 boats with a bus crossing over the German Mountains?", No! By some locks on the Main River that connect the Rhine with the Danube! The pass is only about 2,000 feet in elevation... the lock system gets the boats up about 1,000 feet! I was shocked that such a low pass through the mountains exists. More shocked that the Sources of both Rivers are maybe only 30 miles from each other, and then almost again about 100 miles from the sources up in the Alps. Of course at these points, they are too small for large boats. I really thought that Eastern Europe was a jumbled mess of low mountains. ... not really, they have the Carpathian Mountain Range! Great Video.

Gosh darn it. The Danube is indeed the 2nd longest river in Europe after the Volga. I misread my script and didn't catch it in my editing. My apologies.

Yes indeed. The Northern part of Finland makes up part of the peninsula. I did not mention this as I didn't want to confuse students as most of Finland is on the Hanko Peninsula (which I did not discuss). Thanks for caring enough to comment!

I’m from Finland and here we are taught that Finland is not part of Scandinavia but Fennoscandia peninsula because there’s only a small portion of Scandinavian mountains located in Finland (where also Halti, the highest point of Finland, is located). Meanwhile Nordic countries include Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland.
