Both great knots. I use both. Love the woodland zip tie for tieing on extra hunting clothes to my backpack. Only thing is it uses almost twice much cordage as the jam knot. Excellent presentation of both.
As someone who doesn't know knots well and very much appreciates these videos, I don't use them enough to solidify them to memory. One thing I struggle with that I think would be a helpful addition to knot videos is a few use case examples outside the example. As in, here are other common uses where this style would be better and some use cases where this other one would be helpful. Like, the Canadian knot may not be good if the object will be bouncing around or rolling around as it seems like it would come undone with the object moving around or things rubbing against it.
i like the figure 8 on the jam knot. when i use the jam knot on my tarp again, i'll make that mod. the zip tie looks neat but i'd need a better application to find a use for it. so far the method for securing a bed roll with the jam knot has been best secure method to date.
Which to use? Depends on a lot of factors. The Canadian Jamb Knot is typically a bit simpler and slightly faster to tie, but it has the disadvantage that it has only one loop around what you want to secure. This can be fine for many applications. The wilderness zip tie has the advantage of giving you two loops around what you want to secure at the cost of requiring a little more than twice the length of line that the Canadian Jamb does, and taking a little longer to tie. In most cases either will work just fine.😁
in fishing, the canadian jam knot is known as the arbor knot, and we use it to attach monofilament line to the spool of the reel when you are filling your reel with line..
Woodland Zip Tie requires twice as much rope. Use that if you have enough rope. Use the Canadian Jam knot if you don't have enough rope or if you just have one end to perform the ratcheting (like on a fishing reel). Usually, where a Canadian Jam works, I can instead tie a Buntline, which is smaller and simpler.
As far as the Jam knot, I like (what one RUclipsr called) the “bundle knot” (which another RUclipsr called the “jam knot + quick release”). But I think the Woodland Zip is a lot easier to remember, and simpler to execute. Still, the quick release is a lot faster to untie than the Woodland Zip.
I found these videos looking for a way to bind my open bag of rice. I first did the jam knot (+ quick release), but was left with so much excess rope. Then I came across your video with the Woodland zip tie, and I agree with what others have said, when you have a lot of rope, Woodland zip tie is better! I also just think the Woodland zip tie is simpler to remember and easier to execute. Even if it doesn’t have a quick release.
Actually, I realized I could give the Woodland Ziptie a quick release by simply folding the ends into the loops. Possibly don’t even have to fold both ends, but for uniformity, I folded both.
Both are interesting, but the fact that the Woodland Zip Tie takes about twice as much line as the Canadian Jam Knot / Arbor Knot would lead me to use the latter more than the former.
Woodland zip will only work on compressible bundles. On solid objects there is no tension to keep it secure. Will loosen with the slightest vibration. Wonder why almost all advocate of this zip tie never mention this.
@JasonsKnotChannel You can try! Different easy ways to tie (including the Mooring hitch), exploding way to untie, adjustable fixed loop, possibility to tie on any part of rope, etc. The Lapp loop is one of bowline/sheet-bend family. It's the most simple and multifunctional knot ever, I think.

Hey everyone, please check out the 50 Knot Journal amzn.to/468zKJI a small book I created to help fund these videos. Thanks for watching 🙂
I like the Woodland zip tie. The Canadian Jam knot is useful as well. They are both very useful knots.
I love it, it has plenty of applications
If I didn't have enough line to use the woodland knot, I would use the Canadian stop knot.
How does this excellent demonstration and explanation not have more likes?
Thank you.
ps. you can help by sharing

Perhaps put a overhand knot \ half hitch once tied to stop it coming loose 😊 ..I haven't actually tried it but it might work

Yes it is, “Canadian Jam Knot” was coined by Mors Kochanski, a popular Canadian Bushcraft and survival expert around a decade ago
Nice knots thanks, I always kind of thought of a clove hitch as a rope zip tie but I will definitely use and have the woodland zip tie in my arsenal.
Good video, thanks for sharing, God bless !

Excellent! 👍🏻
Jam knot is faster an easier, good enough for most application of tying stuff down
Perhaps you could add half hitch to 🪵 land knot to secure it 😊

I use the Poacher's Noose for stuff I'm throwing away
Zip tie is better with the much easier to untie by far.

The Canadian Jam Knot is the same as the Arbor Knot.

Woodland Zip Tie is certainlt better among these two.
Once the jam-knot jams..... that's it for you buddy - get a knife.
Woodland Ziptie does not jam.
You just have to pull the knot end (one direction does nothing, the other loosens) to loosen the Canadian Jam Knot. Simple 👍
