    Its cool your dad helps you out sometimes. A million yrs ago my dad showed me how to work on cars. We laughed A lot but I'm glad he did

    A couple of ideas you may consider :
    Front bumper beat out - not perfect but straighter
    Paint the wheels like new in off white
    Scuff the body lightly and satin clear coat to preserve patina
    Reclaimed wood truck bed
    Paint grille like new to match the wheels
    None of the above would cost more than a few dollars and would really make a big difference.

      I agreed with everything John said, especially the satin clear coat. I have a spalted mango ukulele that looks similar in color to this truck, and the wood grain has a patina of sorts that reminds me of rust.
      If there's an old barn or old filling or service station in the area that you could salvage timber from for the truck bed, talk to the owner. My dad used old floor boards from our barn when he took out the hay loft to remodel. Used them for the bed of his blue farm truck (Old Chevy sidestep from the late 50's, if my memory serves).

    That chattering that you're getting is because of the pilot bushing it's allowing the input shaft to wobble when you're letting out the clutch because the pilot bearing is not holding it Center it's it's wallered out. If the clutch and everything is in still good condition just change out that pilot bushing a trick to getting that pilot bushing out if you can't get it with a puller is Pump It full of grease and then get a piece of solid round stock that fits in there just nicely and hit that round stock which puts pressure on that grease and it will punch that pilot bushing right out

    The rust on that truck is minimal and definitely a worthy repairable project if you live north of the mason dixon line,
    everything here is rusted to the ground, no floors, fender wells, etc... and we strip out the rust and replace with new
    metal. A truck/car n the condition of your truck Dylan would be considered very good here in the yankee states, lol.

      Send your "not worth it" truck to me, I'll get $5000 here in Philly for it without even fixing 1 thing. That truck is perfect for a build, I have no idea what he's talking about. Worst part is the engine, but dodge just released the hellafant 426 crate, so that problem is solved.

      Talk to your congressman about salting the roads. Offer the solution of importing red or black cinders from southern Oregon. If the cinders scheme works let me know so I can get the ole' cinder pit producing again, actually don't mention red cinders.

    Usually in the UK stuff with rust on is only fit for scrap or requires MAJOR resoration. Cool videos, great to watch people fixing stuff, especially stuff that isn`t electronically controlled, unlike todays cars/trucks Keep up the good worth Dylan :D

    I love what you are doing. My Dad had a truck exactly like that one, but it was an Ohio State Road truck. It had a snow plow on the front, and was 4WD. Some of my fondest memories of my Dad was in that truck in the winters of the early 80's back when it really snowed in Ohio. Please if you ever want to get rid of that truck, hit me up. I'll give it a great forever home!

    This truck represents possibly up to a third of the beaters in the parking lot when I was in high school in the early 90’s. Some of us were in the junkyard every weekend trying to maintain or upgrade our rides. Was great times and even then I loved it!
    Someone commented before me on here saying awesome wasn’t a close enough word to how he felt about this high schooler budget buildup… well, I found the word… awesomazing.
    When Dave Frieburger took over car craft in the late 90’s ant turned it into budget oriented content, a lot of the people bitched about it. His response has echoed in my head for 25 years now…
    “If hot rodding becomes too expensive, you’ll end up with no one on the track and everyone in the stands”.

    Dylan, I am a 62 year old old fart. I have been a D.I.Y'er since I was 15. My first D.I.Y. job was a motor swap for my oldest brother,my friend and I pulled a tired 318c.i. with a 2bbl from a '66 Cuda ( love them Mopars :-) )and we dropped in a moderately built 340c.i. with a Holly 750 duel pumper. Anyway...long story short,I've been following channel and must say,I STILL learn something from every one of your projects. THANKS dude for posting and still teaching an old geezer something!!     Its always cool to see these older trucks back on the road. My 67 c10 sat for about 21 years before I got it back on the road. Pulled it out from under a tree on a farm. One owner truck with 90k original miles and all the paperwork as well as the jack kit.

    Older cars are so much simpler than modern cars. You can tinker with them, replace a few parts for not a lot of money, and they can run and drive again. As long as there is no catastrophic damage (rod thru the block, for example) you can always get them running again. I really enjoy videos like this. Thanks!

    Lot to be said for loosening the drum adjusters to get the drums off easier. A lip can form on the drum which can be a bear to get the drum off.

      Yes. I was helping one of my friends get the seized brake drum off of a late 90s Honda Civic and I had the exact same problem. That and the emergency brake being stuck on made it a huge pain to take off

      Christian Lucatino put it on jack stands leave a lug nut or two loosely on put it in gear and use the brakes to knock the drum off if you have any brakes left.

      The back ones generally you can knock around the drum with a bounce free mallet and get them off. My 35 year old parts car I had difficulty with - turns out it still had the retainers placed on the lugs at the factory to keep the drums in place on the line!

    I'm really enjoying the rusty pumpkin videos!
    A fast thing about metal brake lines. More often than not, they rust from the inside out, not the outside in. Brake fluid sucks moisture in from anyplace it can, because it's very hygroscopic. Good brake fluid is clear like water. The darker and more opaque it becomes, means that it's contaminated with water and the color comes from fine powdered rust on the INSIDE of the metal lines. This is why I do a total brake fluid flush about every 2-3 years. The pedal goes spongy not just because of air in the lines, but water contamination.
    Fresh pads, rotors, drums and shoes, but it barely stops? Spend $10 or less on a new quart of brake fluid and flush all the old junk out, then see how many times better it gets!

    Hey Dylan, on those drums that have the studs attached to the drum itself like those, one tip for getting them off without 20 minutes of pounding on it with a hammer is to actually put the tire back on, hand tighten your lug nuts and then kick the tire (keeping in mind you're on jack stands of course). That's saved me a couple times - figured I'd pass it on. Love the vids!

    Just caught your video on "Rump"! Just to comment that when doing any type of drum brake or suspension work PLease,everyone, wear eye protection. I almost lost an eye pulling up on those drum brake springs with vice grips.Pliers slipped and I was too close, went to the ER and got x rays for a broken cheek bone.. Negative, but was left with blood inside the white of my eye ball and was slightly oval for a while.
    Wear some type on mechanics glove too when dealing with old grease and oil..Just a note from someone that has 45 years in the industry.

    My dad bought a 76 stepside new in 77 and it has the gas tank behind the seat. Looking forward to more videos of this truck!

    I agree with getting an older truck as a first project but I'd recommend a 73-87 chevy pickup because of the HUGE aftermarket support that's out there, not only in new and used parts but in local knowledge. Not saying there isn't anything for the old Dodges but it's nowhere near as common. Glad to see you shop at Rock Auto too. (even though you're not sponsored by them.... yet!) I've bought quite a few parts for my old pickup, my station wagon, and my camaro through them. Sometimes i'll go to a specialty website like LMC Truck, etc. to see what part they offer so I can go over to Rock Auto and find the same part for half the price. lol.
    Also +1 for ChrisFix. I've been a follower of his for a long time and even used the drum brake video you're talking about as knowledge for rebuilding the rear brakes on my 79 Chevy K10.

    On any of the old drum brakes you can go in through the adjustment window in the back side or inside of the drum, and pop out the little rubber plug that plugs up the window hole for the manual adjustment. Now this isn't always easy because like you said they can be rusted. But you can manually back that brake off then the drum will simply slide off without having to beat on it as long as they are not literally rust welded to the drum or stuck to the drum as you mention.

    Cool video! I have had a bunch of these style trucks and like you, I've never seen one with drums up front. As for the tank, a tank from a Ramcharger can be made to work (using the RC cross members).

    Made comment on other channel that would be better here. It was about our Chevy 10(?) cargo type van, maybe sitting out here in the country about twenty years. Dad’s life was wrongfully cut short year before last. We used to camp with our van. He fixed it up so I could live at the beach while studying in California. It was Ocean Beach, which he oriented me to from when he was a Marine there, Point Loma (submarines, etc.) down the way. After I got back home to the country out here, we took our van to town to get it fixed at a friend’s garage in Elgin (Texas). He didn’t get around to it, left it sitting, after a while we had it towed home. Be nice if people would see this video, like this, it would help ‘em understand that the van is good, it has a lot of meaning for us. I wrote more in the other comment, about our Geo and pickup truck, and how people just want to buy new stuff they don’t need, especially don’t need it to be happy, just to get in hock to the money power. More fun anyway to get something working again. Be nice if I’d seen this before and left that comment here. Also, you’re not really far. Except for the double vision from what happened with my Dad has affected driving, which in the country can be challenging, especially when people seem to not know neighborliness or friendship, I’d get about. It’s nice when you have a friend who enjoys getting these good vehicles going.

    Dylan if you run across a 1970 or so up to 1980 Dodge truck with A/C I really do need the condenser with the little hose to the receiver dryer. Good to see the old beast getting another life.

    I agree with the others that's a truck only has surface rust so far as I can see and hopefully you looked under the frame to make sure of no major crusting or holes. I saw you missed is on the back brakes when trying to pull it off the part that sits on the end of the axle where the brake drum meets you need to maybe give a little grind off and some Lube cuz that is where it usually gets stuck and it does take a good with a hammer or mini Sledge to get it Loose around that point I have even had it happen trying to get wheels off. Hardware kits kits are usually reasonable and you get the broken spring you in the kit. for a full set of drum brakes if it's not special order you should have about $100 in parts which is cheap for the safety of the truck.

    Dylan, if the brake shoes are too tight to get the drums off, just use a medium flat tip screwdriver and loosen the star-wheel adjuster from behind the backing plate to contract the shoes toward each other, the drums will fall off into your hands, easy-peasy.

    Great video man.
    Don't forget the rubber hoses from the metal brake lines to the wheels. Those are most likely 40+ years old and are hard - they will break , no if, ands, or buts about it, change them now. I have had them break and it's not a good time.
    Sometimes to get those drums off you have to back the self adjusters off as the brake shoes will catch on the lip caused by wear inside the drum. You will destroy the lining on the shoes if the drums are forced off. I've been a shade tree mechanic for 50 years, like before disk brakes were available?

    Well shoot, I had a whole big comment typed out last night but forgot to post it before I shut down for the night. I really wish youtube would get with the times and get a better comment system, one that saves incomplete comments in local cookies perhaps.
    Anyhow, truck is coming along nicely! I need to get back to progressing things on my two old VW beetles soon, they haven't seen any progress aside from boxing up freshly powder-coated parts for well over five years now! I enjoy seeing projects that move faster than my own! XD

    Nice looking truck man. My grandpa has a 76 Power Wagon 4x4 i really like. It's got a 360 and 727 but a ton of rust and i'm not sure if it could be saved since it's been used as a farm truck. Think he and his brother bought it new too.

    Just a idea for you to try i have found in your older dodge drum brakes if they hang when you get the a bit loose try tapping the drum back on alot of times it will turn loose. Thnks for saving these old gems.

    Fyi , there should be a slot in the backplate to access the adjuster. Then you won't have to fight the shoes to get the drums off

    My first truck was a 1971 Dodge that the timing chain and gear failed. I bought it for $300. Once I got it home. I had to replace the timing set, water pump, and steering drag links and tie rod ends and king pins. It was a straight axle truck with front drum brakes. The gas tank was behind the front seat too. The rust finally got to it. It got so bad that when you made left hand turns it would pop the transmission into neutral. Those Dodge trucks were also know for mice to build their nest in the heater boxes. LOL

    Awesome job! Reusing the brake shoes was good. I would suggest you give some details on how you determine the suitability for not replacing them. Riveted verses bonded. Even though the bonded may have plenty of material they may separate from the shoe due to age. Also brake cleaner on them just as insurance in case they grease, oil or brake fluid contamination. I know that t is hard to cover everything but as you stated safety is important especially when you are dealing with brakes. Again well done. Thanks for sharing.

    I've got a 75 with the tank behind the seat. Not sure when they quit either. Also had 2 74 4wd both had drums. The 75 went to all time 4wd and disc front!

    You might want to start carrying a couple of blocks of wood to put under the tail of your trailer as your loading. They take a lot of the stress off the hitch and tongue. I noticed a couple of cracks on one of my friends trailers, we started using the blocks under the tail, and welded up the cracks... no issues now, but we always us the blocks.

    On something that old you should always replace all the springs and hardware and shoes as well as the wheel cylinders.

    Man been watching your videos for a few days and yes I am a enthusiast of theses old trucks and cars but also a just really want to learn more for when I get my first vehicle and I've been considering getting a older one and fixing it up but I didnt really know where to start but watching your videos are making me think of it as not to hard of a task just seems like you make it a little bit easier to understand then the other fellers

    I am glad to see that mopar brought back to life! Honestly, I would like to see it completely stripped down & done properly but, Time, & money! We all do what we can with the tools & knowledge we have! I believe I have seen other video's of yours where you brought other vehicle's back to life & took one to a car show, (I THINK IT WAS A CHALLENGER?) I can't remember. GOOD STUFF Dylan!     Cool project... I've owned both '72 and '73 D-100s. To clarify the fuel tank question, Dodge moved the fuel tank to the frame rail in late '73.

    Nice I figured it had glass packs on it when you cranked it on the first vid I haven't seen them with front drums either but since it's a dual chamber instead of a single one you could still runs manual disc just as it sits I never liked drums on all four corners but yeah it doesn't take a lot to get em going as long as there not beat to death

    Is this a truck you actually own? Is it titled? I'm jealous and I love the patina and the look of it. My dad had an extended cab dodge with a wooden flatbed growing up so this truck brings back memories. I'm only 33 and this stuff just floats my boat. I used to wrench just like you do, just barely scraping by, do what needs to be done to keep it running, no bells and whistles here.

    I don't know much about Dodge trucks, but I think the CUSTOM trim level was probably the base level, which is why the truck has metal interior door panels, drum front brakes and a column shift 3-speed. That orange color looks like it may have been ordered by a highway department somewhere. Have you found any registration documents in the truck?

    Just a recommendation for next time, use silicone grease on the wheel cylinder pins. It's rubber safe unlike wd40

    Dylan you should fully restore this truck. Get it all cleaned up and painted. And for the bed of the truck you should get a couple and 2 by 4s and stain them and nice brown for the floor of the bed.

    The best advice I can give someone on their first project vehicle is when you find a project car or truck or whatever, check the undercarriage from front to back for severe rust. Heavy scaling, flaking rust could cost a fortune to repair and is a total safety hazard. Check the frame from front to back, body mounts, any major structural damage underneath has to be taken into consideration first and foremost. If your vehicle is solid underneath, you'll have a solid foundation to improve upon. People living in the "rust belt" know what I'm talking about. Just some food for thought.

    Here is a one man brake bleeding trick I learned from my grandfather,use a oil squirt can with a short piece of rubber fuel line hose and fill it with brake fluid and crack the bleeder and connect the hose to the bleeder and the nozzell on the oil can and pump your fluid up to the master cylinder.

    Personally what I would do: swap in a 5.9L/360 from a 2000-03 Durango (can be had cheap from junk yards), front disc brake conversion (use parts from a 73+ D100/D250), usual gaskets and bushings, fix up some of the wiring for road worthyness (lights, etc), gas tank moved to frame rails from a late 70s truck...
    Oh and sometimes I find the hard to find parts at partsgeek.com

    im in the midwest u never stuff like this in thejunk yard ever and when u do see them on the street they completly rusted out that truck isnt bad at all also i have a suggestion clean up the paint leave the patina put the genral lee 01 on the side call it a day lol

    Nice video, I'm curious to see what it entails to replace the clutch.. I've been thinking about buying a 1980 W200 but when I drove it I discovered that the clutch is toast in it, and I just have no idea how much of a pain it would or wouldn't be to replace. Keep up the good work!

    One of those push rods that you took to the wire wheel and cleaned it up is bent I seen it when you sat it down on the concrete you said it down on the high side of the band and it rolled and you could see that it was in it real shallow U shape. Of course very very shallow but I seen it. It was the one on the bottom of the two as in the one that was closest to me and farthest from you. I watched it again and when you said it down you could see it rocking back and forth : D I did subscribe and click the notification Bell I really appreciate how you're straightforward with everything good job and good work.

    Hey Dylan, are you going to put a floor either in wood, or put a metal floor, especially where the tank is , annother suggestion should be spray paint the rims, or put primer on.
