- In this series I will take you through a step by step build of the Airfix 1/72 De Havilland Mosquito PRXVI kit.
Aimed at beginners, I hope to show lots of simple tips and tricks to boost the confidence of less experienced modellers, and to maybe add some polish for the more accomplished. Lots of detail, and yes, lots of talking! In part seven, construction is finalised and there's some masking in preparation for painting.

This might just be the best tip/technique I've come across! I've just made my first attempt on a 1/144 Typhoon canopy - small, very curved and part of the framing pretty indistinct. It worked brilliantly, I even applied a small second piece where I thought one of the edges was a bit raggedy and that was fine too. Canopy masking has been the part of a build I've least looked forward to - until now. Many thanks Jen.

Bare-Metal Foil ordered! £7.99 from Hannants. I have a 1/144 Eurofighter Typhoon canopy to mask and it was filling me with dread.
While I’m not building along directly, I am finding all the tips and techniques extremely useful, so a big thank you for doing this series!
High jen I like the idea of using foil on the canopy that's something I've never even thought about. Going to buy a sheet now and give it a go on the sabre dog I'm about to start.
Nice video, Jen. I've heard of Bare Metal Foil masking but never seen it demonstrated before. T'would be rude not to give it a try after you've gone to the trouble os showing us how it's done.
Learned something new today. Never thought of using foil to mash windows.

Interesting enough foil masks are used on real aircraft to mask windows.
Brilliant idea re the canopies - I recently demasked the windshield to a 1:72 space shuttle and to my horror the glass was frosted even after I masked inside and out and used the testors canopy glue.
With the undercarriage legs they are handed based on a 45degree strut that is glued to one of the leg sides. Been pressing on with mine but hit a barrier today having tried to sand the wingtips. Have managed to sand the wing strengthener wings. Not giving up but need to dig out my other kit and re-make the wings (and it was all going so well :-( )

Currently using tamiya tape to mask very frustrating. Reminder to self when doing German bombers, choose a larger scale and a model with masks. Will try to find some bare metal foil.
V.brave, seen this type of masking go horribly wrong in the past. CT scale models do a perfect mask set for both variations of the 1:72 Airfix Mossie for around a fiver, came in two days.! And yes I made the same mistake of not colouring the nose frames before fitting the windows.🙄
Great info on your methods of canopy masking a process which I find challenging using tape. I have now ordered some of your preferred BMF and look forward to trying it out. Thanks for sharing.
Great update. Like others it looks like the foil for masking will be a great help. Ordered it off Amazon sense the package you showed was pretty unique. Agree that the tape method works but I have always had issues when the part gets to small.
Neat trick with the BMF. Could you use plumber's self adhesive tape on a roll as an alternative?
I don't know, as I've never tried. I suspect it would be a bit thick, and maybe a bit too sticky for comfort!

Very informative as always, thank you Jen. Have you tried the HIQ circle masks for landing lights etc? Perfectly cut and available in 1mm upwards in 0.2mm increments. I wouldn't be without them now.

Nice demonstration of BMF - will give a spin. Was there no dipping in Future floor wax? of did I mis that? Would be good to have your thoughts on pros and cons. Thank you as ever for wonderful insights into the hobby
It's very rare that I do that, I certainly don't do it for the sake of it. I would only really do dipping if the canopy had flaws that I was trying to fix, and I don't use Future any more, I use the AK Gauzy stuff.
Always have used Tamiya tape for masking, works the best for me. Have tried the BMF, masking fluid etc. I always go back to the tape. Is this really modelling for beginners? Really? Seems advanced.
I do get the feeling that most beginners might struggle with masking so precisely. Especially on circular windows. Not to say it isn't worth showing. It's worth showing ways that "hand painting" canopy frames can be done without too much effort if you have a fine brush and a steady-ish hand - especially with acrylic paints and/or posca pens.
@paulsmodels - You said this once before, and my response is the same as the last time - why do you think this is not beginner level stuff? It's impossible for me, as a modeller with 40 odd years experience behind me, to truly appreciate things from a beginners perspective if they don't tell me!
Why should something that takes a bit of patience and a steady hand be advanced? I've just tried it (on my forth kit) and it worked really well and was much easier for me than Tamiya tape.
