    You don't achieve louder mixes by slapping some magical limiter plugin on your master buss and slamming your entire mix through it...
    At least, if you want your mix to actually sound good. 😂
    What many people don't realize is that so much of a professional mix's perceived loudness comes from within the mix itself.
    Not from mastering.
    In other words, HOW you mix and the way that you handle transients within the mix can produce a final mix that's super loud..even before the mastering process.
    In this tutorial, I share my technique for producing louder mixes using one of my favorite new plugins.

    Been a fan of Gclip for years. It free, simple, low cpu usage, and works as good as any. Blocks them snare peaks and costs nothing. Did I mention it's free? Haha

    the transparency of its sound has been commented on by another video i saw of the plugin and its very very impressive especially at this price point........they need to come on with some more goodies !

    Yes, I use a clipper on a lot of tunes. My go to right now is the JST clipper, that thing works great and simple too! I’ll have to check out Backsalts, mainly because Jordan is the man!!!!

    I use Newfangled audio's Saturate plugin for clipping. Also pretty easy to use. Mostly using it on the drumbus. I also use to create a snare bus ( gluing together snare top and bottom and if some special treatment is needed) as well and i use it on that too.

    Sounds good this is what I wanted to know , I haven’t used clipping a lot in the past but I like this concept to create more headroom.
    And keep the punch and volume, in other reviews they were changing the sound of tracks , I don’t need another saturation or distortion plugins, thanks

  • @zarlok5294

    Yes. I use clipping. I work in Reaper and there’s are two included plugins I rely on frequently. One is called soft clipper and the other is a transient controller. Both are absolutely transparent and the controls are simple.

    Well thanks for your tips. It will changed the way I go about loudness. Bought the plugin, and it's a beauty. Love Black Salt Audio. Was a charm to install, no complications to activate, just put your email adress and they will do the rest of the job for you. In the recent years, I bought a lot of plugins, but this one is one of the best. And definitly will become a sure "go for", and one of my favorite tool. Just wow.

    JST Clip! Fantastic plugin, personally I think it's the best Clip plugin out there and beyond easy to use, with the same 1 knob feature plus a "2x" feature to oversample

  • @phadrus
    @phadrus 2 года назад +1

    Sure wish the plugin (and all modern plugins) had auto gain compensation to make things quicker and easier, but I guess it’s easy enough to check levels before and after the clipper and manually adjust.

    I get the same effect on your drum bus but with a summing mixer.

    Might have to try this one, i find some comps and other plugins take awhile to get used to i love knobs but reading a whole book about what they do "cough, cough plugin alli" takes away from the fun. Plugin alli is great tho just some times too many knobs to turn. Also a fan of clippers.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, from what I understand clipping is the key to getting that flat wave form you see on professionally mastered recordings

    Your content has helped so much man. Let me ask you or anyone else that may have some info. A hip hop producer says his levels are roughly these on final mixes
    Hip hop (kbs)
    Kick-8db
    Vocals somewhere here
    Bass-13db
    Snare-10db
    Is there a range formula for heavy music that you use? Thank for everything dude.

    I got this plugin a couple days ago to try it and everytime it clips my audio it makes a scratchy annoying noise even at a low setting that I can hear in my mix.

  • @TheSlowpick
    @TheSlowpick 2 года назад +1

    Hi everybody, maybe I'm too stupid, but I don't get the point.
    Wouldn't the clipper see the identical peaks of the snare If it was on the Masterbus? So isn't this doing what you would usually do when you start mastering, just on another track? I mean what else should peak higher than the snare? So this to me is topdown mixing 2 dB hotter compared to doing it without the clipper.

  • @johnsnyder4949

    quick question are u still using a compressor on your drum buss in addition to the clipper or is the clipper doing all the work ?

    Hey Bobby, all good my friend?
    Just got this clipper and its great and simple! Just as I like plugins too..
    I have a question, should I use it on the separate tracks like kick, snare, bass, guitars… Or just keeping to my drum bus, and on my mix bus for reference, turning off before sending to master?
    Thanks in advance! Cheers from Brazil!

      Good question, following!

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  2 года назад +4

      You can use it in any of the ways that you just listed. I prefer to keep it simple and to only clip my drum buss. Sometimes I only clip my snare if I REALLY want to keep it simple. If you're clipping your mix and like the way it sounds, I'd say export the mix as-is for mastering. You can always take it off if the mastering engineer requests for you to do so.

    Just an observation of my own personal feelings…I find it a little bit difficult to trust that this review is 100% objective since Jordan Valeriote has been included in the videos before and seems to be a friend. Of course there is nothing wrong with helping a friend out by giving visibility, especially since he just launched Black Salt Audio quite recently. Maybe the plugin really is that good but I just have this little doubt at the back of my mind 😕

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  2 года назад +1

      You can try the plugin for yourself for absolutely free for 14-day and make up your own mind. As someone who's not into gear, I only feature products on the channel that I actually use myself in the real world.

    • @Simula77
      @Simula77 2 года назад +1

      @@FrightboxRecording That is definitely true and the pricing of this plugin is also more compelling than the previous ones. I also want to make it very clear that I am eternally greatful for your videos and have nothing but respect for your work. I watch every video you put out and owe most of mixing skills to your teaching. I really do hope I didn’t offend you.

      ive seen a couple other reviews of this product and they have all been very positive. and as bobby noted they do have a 14 day trial and i find the price point to be great .......since im a dumby i love the simplicity as well

      @Simula77 2 года назад

      I actually installed both Low Control and Escalator immediately when they came out and did like both. I was just pretty disappointed by the pricing when it was revealed. Come to think of it, that might actually be the reason why I have some reservations towards Black Salt Audio's plugins.

    This clipper sounds like crap to my ears hahaha. Plus no oversampling? With tools like Standard Clip, KClip, and Saturate why would you even need this? I have heard free clippers that sound better. Hard pass for me! Appreciate the video tho bro, you're content is great, especially for the up-and-coming engineers. I wish I would have know your channel when I was new to all this!
