He taunted him while he did it, saying he was too weak to protect them. But the very second, the instant, his little illusion fell apart, he broke down. Screaming about how unforgivable it was. Its partly just guessing on my part, but given whats seen in the movie, its Backstory probably went like this:
A long time ago Omatsuri Island actually *was* an extremely well-known resort-island, sporting a large city and all possible kinds of amenities (I find it unlikely that this Venice-like City was built by the Baron and his men. Plus, it is mostly empty and deserted).
It was also an Island notable for its Plantlife, especially Flowers (based on that Map). One day, a sentient Flower (Lily) evolved (not unlikely, given that this is the Grandline), destroyed all other Flowers and ate every single Human on the Island (hence, the Graveyard Chopper found) and later everyone unfortunate enough to come there. Just as new food became ever rarer, the Baron stranded on the island and, devastated by the loss of his beloved crew and near death, made a pact with the Devil: He is allowed to live in the illusion that his friends are still alive (due to Lilys' Powers), in return he organizes more food for the Flower to eat. Pretty dark stuff, man. :O

My theory is, Lily Carnation is actually a devil fruit user. Somehow, a plant managed to consume a devil fruit ( Which could be anything, maybe a mythical zoan of some kind of devil). That would explain the magical properties of Lily, as well as how all her creations and illusions vanish when Papa kills Lily, otherwise the one piece world would be hell if there were more Lily Carnations spread around the globe.

Like he was meant to die with his crew in that storm but the Lily Carnation found him weak and about to die and is basically his life support and granted his wish for his crew to come back to life in exchange to lure pirates for the Lily to feed on.
So, when the plant is torn from his shoulder he's not just dying emotionally from his crew being gone. But from his physical body deterirating and Luffy punched him the rest of the way to his death... so Luffy did and didnt kill him in that way.

What an intensely weird film! I loved it!! It was directed by Mamoru Hosoda, which is why it's so different to everything else in One Piece.

Everyone talking about how scary that one scene at 0:45 is. And yes, it is kinda eery but after watching this movie 3 times, knowing this scene, I can't help to find it almost comedic.
I mean, you'd expect them to decompose like we've seen with DJ and Mochi but nah: instaplantification.

yeah them turning into plants was an odd choice thematically. i too thought they would decompose into corpses, but nope just plants lol

Not gonna lie the moment when everyone turn into plants, without any transformation or sequence, just turn into them between frame, its pure nightmare fuel

This was the only time Luffy unintentionally killed a person by accident with a no kill code that didn't want to be compared to his grandpa Garp.

If you look closely, you can actually see the Barons head cave in to like half its size at the end frame of Luffy's punch. I'm pretty sure Luffy's punch was so strong that it blew his head up 💀

This movie's animation style, plot and horror elements is of such a caliber that you begin to doubt it's a One Piece film at all and not just a fever dream you had once many years ago. So good though.
