I'm battling BPD (borderline personality disorder), and while what Ren describes is something uttelry different, it really comforts me to see that art like this gets attention. And the way he portrays is so raw and real. I have been to the psychiatric ward many times and while I do have hard times, I always get through it because I have a big support system thanks to awesome people. but many people in there really dont. they are in there and have no where to go, no one visiting and are going more insane by the day. It's not talked about enough and videos like this give this problem a forum. And share empathy, that if you have people in your surroundings acting wierd and struggling to get a grip, empathy first. You can never see the internal struggle people have from the outside. Consider that they may need help even thuogh you cant see from the outside, or theyre not asking for it directly. Maybe they're going through an episode. Stay in touch. Motivate to get help. Please, don't let people with deteriorating mental states drown in loneliness.

Something I think a lot of people overlook with this song is his way of comparing the dark inner voice to the mythical Christian evil. I think it's deliberate. He mentioned in a live stream with fans talking about this song that he's not religious, he just likes the stories. I think he's done a great job of weaving a narrative that explains how that "evil" is actually just a dark part of humans, not some mythical ancient supernatural force.
Really it's a great service to those who struggle with this. Imagine being convinced that you're battling some kind of supernatural, all-powerful evil force, imagine trying to convince yourself that you can overcome it. If it's brought back down to the human level it makes it far easier to deal with and overcome.
This is a part of all humans, to different degrees. If people can learn that it's a natural part of human psychology and not be convinced it's some supernatural force outside of themselves, rendering them powerless in the face of it, people will have a much easier time dealing with their battles and succeeding.

Totally. I think I read in the Hi Ren description that when Ren was really sick and in constant pain, at some point his mind couldn't really cope and the only way his mind could rationalize the experience was to pin it on a demonic possession. I guess that is the psychosis episode. But yeah, I love the part of the song where the Antichrist reveals himself. I am not religious in any established way but I also find those stories fascinating, and in the end the entities of the divine and the demonic are facets of human beings, eternally dancing on earth just as Ren so eloquently puts it.

I think Satan is just the darkness that lives in all of us. God is the light.
People maybe need to give these aspects of us a form and a name to deal with it? These God stories exist worldwide. But it's all of us, and we have to choose every 15 minutes or so which way we're leaning, lol.

That was the purpose of gods in the first place. They explained the things we didn’t understand. Where does the sun go at night? The sun god is sleeping. Why do the rivers flood and destroy our crops? The river god was angry at us, so we need to leave an offering. So, yes, he isn’t being literal with the Biblical imagery. They just represent the dark thoughts and our struggles against them. All humans deal with this. We are beings of duality.

I agree with Johnny that it is so cool to be so captivated and enjoy something that is so different from what we normally enjoy listening to. Was truly just an incredible performance and depiction of what it means to be human. I have no bipolar or schizophrenic tendencies, but it still resonated with me regarding accepting both the positives and negatives in life.

I'm a fan of nearly everything and i think that's part of what i find fascinating about Ren...he isn't just a musician; he is the embodiment of it(as well as being a storyteller, artist, lyricist, genre blender). But what seals ut for me is his vulnerability. He dares us not to feel all the emotions he's revealing. It's so rare to see a man doing that. It's fucking beautiful. It was Justin Hawkins who had brought him to my attention. My daughter then told me she's listened to him for a while when I told her about him. As others have mentioned there is a story he tells featuring Violet, Jenny and Screech (over 3 songs) that's quite powerful too. His latest is Sick Boi which again is well written. I'm in the same boat....a 70s/80s meta-head through and through. But there's just something about Ren that captivates me. Maybe it's his story, and even going through everything he's gone through, he's still this Incredible artist.

I love that this could be anyone, on any subject, in any situation. It does loads to break down the stigma of mental health issues, and more importantly ... how we are all potentially one traumatic event away from debilitating PTSD or worse. I don't think enough emphasis is placed on how much we need both sides of our coin. The voice of reason here was portrayed as the antagonist ... but on closer introspection, I believe that this song beautifully illustrated just how neccessary our human dichotomy actually is in our make up as Human Beings.

I would recommend "Chalk Outlines" live featuring Chinchilla (another amazing voice). They have collaborated on multiple songs. A good song that everybody knows is Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" performed busker style. Might wanna look at that one too if not even for a react.

He has Lyme disease, which was misdiagnosed for many years.
If you want to hear him being less quirky, I'm afraid he's also intimidatingly good at that too. Check out his street performances with Sam Tomkins, or with his band The Big Push.
I came across him through this song a few weeks ago. I think he's the best new artist I've heard in many years.

New to you guys, but you say you usually listen to rock/metal. So listen to The Big Push - War Pigs (Black Sabbath Cover) next, Ren is in the band, of course. And then go to Ren - The Hunger to see him rap.
After that, there are still more versions of him to discover. Enjoy the rabbit hole.

Sup Kents, just came across your channel.... shout out from Adelaide. Ren is an amazing artist, like pure art. It's ironic in the song when he says "And my music's been kinda doing bits too" in the song that blew up and made his name known around the globe. You should do the tale of Jenny and Screech and violets tale, though do full version that has all 3. If not follow the order.. Jenny, Screech then Violet.
Keen to see what else you guys been checking out. 💜🇦🇺
I literally said this guy is like young blood and Tim minchin to my brother.

This song isn't actually about schizophrenia or Bi-polar. He had Lyme disease and also adhd and it's just the inner monologue of anyone who has self doubt and also had to go through adversity.

If you wanna go on the ride of your fucking life (apart from the Ren journey that is, give the man his damn flowers IMMEDIATELY) you'll probably be interested in the debut LP from Ethel Cain that came out last year called Preacher's Daughter. I'd recommend oneshotting it personally but take it at your own pace, it gets REAL interesting REAL fast when you've got the album notes up + there's a pdf somewhere around that details all the necessary supplemental content. All I'm gonna say about the actual story itself is that when I heard it in full the first time my brain fully bluescreened. You're gonna be surprised but incredibly intrigued methinks

Love songs like this, where the artist is talking to himself and having a conversation, it's rare hearing songs like this and I think NF has done it a couple of times.
I'd check it out, but long songs aren't for me 😅

NF does it but the production kind of puts me off. It’s like still so forced into a song if that makes sense. This feels different. Maybe I’m biased because I’m English too idk
