in the private sector I am always on alert watching to see if I can be replaced with someone younger and cheaper. I would hate to train a backup to do all of my stuff when I am away, for fear the boss might make a change. it's also flattering when clients wanna talk to ME, and not a backup. I like vacation time, but I also like reassurance that I will have a job when I return, so i still check my email when away.

But at the same time... if you never train your relief... then you can never be promoted either :)

I don’t go on vacation, haven’t for years. I don’t want to lose my job in this way. HR gets upset every few years that I have years worth of vacation days piled up, I tell them to talk to my manager who tells them to let it be.

Very good tips! Will try to use them for my next vacation. Again, good tips, very useful.

Thank you for the tips! I really need to follow the one about not checking emails while away. I did a little better earlier this month when I went to Bali for 10 days, but I should try to avoid checking it altogether. I should have something where a supervisor or project manager has to send me a text message if there is an absolute emergency.
