Mohs Surgery: The Most Effective Treatment for Skin Cancer

  • Mohs micrographic surgery is the most effective and advanced treatment for skin cancer. It is performed on an outpatient basis using a highly specialized and precise technique that removes the cancer in stages, one tissue layer at a time. This technique allows physicians to precisely identify and remove a tumor while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue intact and unharmed. Mohs surgery offers the highest potential for cure - even if the skin cancer has been previously treated by another method.
To ensure that your skin cancer treatment is performed to the highest standards of quality and competency, be sure to choose an American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS) fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon. Learn more at www.mohs.org or www.mohscollege.org.

I had MOHS surgery yesterday at the Vacaville Kaiser hospital. This video was extremely helpful explaining the procedure and calming my nerves. MOHS is really the only way to go for skin cancer treatment .It is precise and accurate. Dr. Omlin did the surgery and I was amazed at what he was able to do. He is extremely skilled to say the least. He is a true artist when it comes to surgery. My sister has also had MOHS surgery several times with Dr. Omlin and she agrees that he is the absolute BEST doctor! Also I was so impressed with his dedicated, compassionate staff and nurses. They took every effort to make me feel supported and comfortable. Not to mention there was no pain at all to the procedure. Anyone having skin cancer removed should really seek out a MOHS surgeon. If you are lucky enough to have Kaiser Dr Omlin in Vacaville is the best!! .

I've had 4 MOH's surgeries done on my face.
I also had the flap procedure done on my nose. I watched this video yesterday prior to another surgery. It is so concise and informative. I especially liked the cancer comparison to an iceberg. My latest incident was the tiniest spot that bled when I washed my face. This procedure is awesome. Dr. Omlin is awesome. MOH's clinic should be complimented.

Excellent video! Even more impressive are the actual results from Mohs micrographic surgery. I would not have an earlobe if it weren't for this type of surgery. The amazing technique of using what little of the earlobe I had left to create and leave me an earlobe is something I am extremely grateful for. When told that cancer had gone all the way through my earlobe, all I could imagine is what you see in docked neutered feral cats, a big missing chunk of my lower ear. Instead I have two matching earlobes, whew! What profound gratitude I have for Dr. Omlin, his staff and Mohs micrographic surgery!! Thank you!!!

What an innovative way to treat skin cancer! It appears to me that this is a very precise and thorough procedure which allows the surgeon to reassure that all the cancerous material is gone, even during the procedure. It's astonishing how cleanly even larger wounds can be closed whilst avoiding bigger scars in the patient's face. The techniques seem simple, yet effective and should, in my humble opinion, be performed all around the world. Medical advancements like this one bring us one step further in battling a common enemy.

I’ve had Mohs procedure twice by Dr. Omlin at the Vacaville campus. These experiences exceeded my expectations, both in terms of the actual procedure and the long term aesthetics. Dr. Omlin has an extraordinary commitment to patient comfort during the surgery, unlike other skin cancer treatments I’ve experienced. Bravo. This begins with the pre-surgery video posted here, which is extremely well done, having the correct level of detail for most individuals. The animation and verbiage were superb. Just as important as the pre-surgery video, Dr. Omlin also provided a post-procedure video on recovery and wound care, most helpful. Dr. Omlin and his team are a stellar asset to Kaiser Permanente. I cannot say enough about Dr. Omlin and his fabulous staff!!! I’ve had 5 separate skin cancers. The first one at only 21 years old on my face. That was over 30 years ago. Because it was not MOHS surgery, it came back in the same spot. Dear Dr. Omlin was able to finally remove it once and for all. He gave me options, explained every detail, was patient with my questions and anxieties and EVEN called me at home to see how I was doing. I hope I never get another skin cancer. But, in the event I do….. he is the ONLY doctor I would let take care of it. I trust him implicitly and he does wonderful work!!!!

A few years ago, my dermatologist noticed a cancer spot on my nose. He sent me to see Dr. Kenny Omlin, chief Mohs surgeon in Vacaville. He took a pie shape piece of my nose. Today you would never know I had anything done.
Four years ago, my husband had skin cancer on his face. He went to see Dr. Omlin and he treated him with several surgeries over a 3 year period. It was so comforting to us to be with him. He is so caring about his patients. Whenever we had questions, Dr. Omlin always took the time to explain the process so we could understand. Whether it was a home call at 8 at night or an office visit, Dr. Omlin went above and beyond.
This procedure gave me 3 more years with my husband. That is something I will treasure forever.

Mohs surgery has been a life saver for me, having had 3 surgeries (ear, temple, nose) all basal cell carcinoma type. Doctor Kenny dealt with these beautifully and efficiently. I then had an encounter with the squamous cell carcinoma and in a matter of months it blew up and needed attention earlier. Thankfully Dr. Kenny looked in at my appointment and sensed the urgency, I was immediately set up for surgery. So if anyone else is dealing with squamous, avoid protocol and jump to the front of the line for surgery, weeks or months make a difference. My last surgery was successful and I am being monitored, good luck everyone with skin issues, where was sunscreen in the 60’s, 70’s…

So I was worried because the cancer (the lowest level) was on my upper lip. I knew there were lots of nerve endings around the mouth, so I wasn't sure about the healing after the surgery. I won't lie. The first week was difficult but after the first week or so life was getting better. Make sure you have lots of ice cream, pudding and jello. That was the only thing I could get down so I could take Tylenol. The staff was wonderful especially Dr. Omlin. He explained everything that was going to happen and I was able to be still and close my eyes. Awesome job!

I am so grateful to Dr. Omlin for his excellence in Mohs surgery. It's been about 10 years since he removed cancer on my nose. Once it healed, there was little evidence that I had had surgery. The scar that was left behind is almost invisible. Before the surgery, as expected, I was very nervous. Dr. Omlin assured me that I was in good hands. He calmed my fears. I was at his office for most of the day and left cancer free, scar free. He also called me at home after surgery to check up on me. Thank you Dr. Omlin. Excellent video.

Dr. Kenny Omlin at Kaiser in Vacaville, CA, just completed the most fantastic MOHS surgery and skin graft on my left ear. Given the size of the cancer, going in I feared that I’d come out looking like a munchkin. Instead, without looking closely neither I nor my wife and children can tell that any procedure was done. I don’t know if all MOHS surgeons are as competent as Dr. Omlin, assistant Chelsea and the rest of his staff, but if they are even half as competent you’ll be in good hands.

As a frail 86 year old with many medical issues after recovering from urosepsis and a stroke, his treatment options were limited.

The above video is an excellent representation of the MOHS procedure to remove skin cancer. I recently had the surgery at Vacaville Kaiser Permanente to remove a patch of basal cell carcinoma in my left cheek. This required the removal of a pretty decent sized cheek area a little larger than a silver dollar. Dr. Omlin performed the procedure flawlessly and used a flap of skin to fold over the region of removed skin. Suture lines followed the natural folds of the smile, eye line and ear to minimize the visual cues of the surgery. The procedure can seem somewhat daunting, initially, since you are awake throughout the entire surgery but it helps that Dr. Omlin and his assistants create an environment with music and positive feedback to ease the patient through the process. A local anesthesia is used instead of putting the patient under as removing all of the cancer nodules may require a number of trips to the lab throughout the day until every nodule of detectable cancer has been identified and removed. MOHS is the most effective procedure at ensuring the patient and the physician that all cancer has been removed that can be identified. After a lot of negative comments from friends and family directed at Kaiser over the past 20 years, Dr. Omlin is an example of an area of Kaiser that clearly cares about his patients and performs exemplary & necessary work.

Just to let you know, I discovered a mole on my scalp that I am certain was melanoma, I got rid of it by mixing epsom salt and water and bringing it to a boil to form a paste and then applied that on it while still hot and covered it with a band aid twice a day and it was gone within 9 weeks! (you can just set a portion aside after it hardens and use it again day after day by just warming it up on the stove and adding a bit of water to it), it was a darkish glowing black color with a lump underneath about half the size of a dime, it had been there for about two years but I didn't notice it as it was behind my ear. I also eliminated all sugar and meats except for fish and replaced my morning breakfast with hummus on toast but these days I would look into couscous instead, very nutritious and no sugar!.. Also drink lots of water and get your vitamin c from fruits, and drink carrot and celery juice every day! In re. to couscous, it is excellent in the morning with a mix of chopped fried red peppers, red cabbage, garlic, onions, carrots and green peas adding curry powder and a bit of red chili powder! Very filling and tasty with a glass of orange juice! I am not a doctor but I can tell you that switching your diet to salads for breakfast, lunch and dinner instead of cooked foods will also greatly improve your chances of recovery! Its what I ate through out the time I had it, it was a very black glowing looking mole and its still gone today two years later!.. Just so you know, cooking tends to kill nutrients and all the ELF waves from 5G do not help! They get into the soil and supermarkets killing nutrients in our food! I invite you to look up the following video titled "Dr Sharon Goldberg, 5g Michigan state hearing cell towers " (as well as McGill university director Paul Heroux at the same hearing). That and stress weakens your immune system! Oxygen is very good for the body and mind as well as eating dried seaweed every day (look for Japanese brands). Also so there is a tablet called tagrisso for those with lung cancer but it could be helpful as well for other types, if anyone here has breast cancer, look up drday dot com, for breast cancer.. And Dr Tullion Simoncini also has great treatments that apparently work! All the best!

Because you saved me. I did this in your name
    100 k
I think we need to post this.
About 3 months ago my son s friend was tragedy injured and paralyzed in a snow boarding accident. He is a student at Vintage
They called my dad, Rick Robben, who owns Rick Robben Construction. They needed a 400 SF addition and a new bathroom to accommodate their sons needs
With Rick that day were my Husband Marquis Thompson and Rick s close friend Ryan Cole. Both superintends.
Rick became emotional and looked the family in the eye. He said, I want to do this for free. It will not cost you a dime
I asked my dad, why would you do that ? He said, first it’s my grandson’s friend. This gift is a good example of giving. Second, he too had a health issue .
During this project my dad received a clean bill of health.
I hope everyone who reads this gives something today.
I love my dad. Toughest man I know and the most giving.
Napa should be proud of him
The project is now complete. My son s friend will be home next week

I have had 9 basal cell carcinomas removed only one with the light mohs incision no stitches just a little divot scoop no stitches needed the other eight needed a lot of stitches one basal cell I let go thinking it would a small divot scoop I let go but it was much worse the Dr said it looked like it was going on in center of my chest for over five years but it only started to get a scab and crack and bleed for less than a month before I went to get it removed That was so foolish he had to make what looked like the mark of zoro in the middle of my chest over 25 stitches to close the Z.lol since then I get checked every 6 months with no malignancies for 31/2 years then after 3 1/2 years I just had my 9th basal cell removed got about a 2 inch scar on my right neck by the clavicle it took about 7 or eight very close stitches but I really want to say I have been taking Nicotinamide 1000 mg a day 500 mg 2 x a day 1 500 mg before breakfast and another 500 mg pill after lunch and I have only had 1 basal cell in 3 1/2 years I feel the Nicotinamide has helped keeping away the extra malignant basal cells I mostly just get pre -cancer cells that I have frozen off and that's a lot better than surgery last year the Dermatologist
prescribed my with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) but I only put the cream on my upper chest and shoulders front and back that stuff made me look like a went through a fire but I did not put enough on my neck area and that is where my last basal cell was The 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is a very unsightly treatment and causes a lot of discomfort but the Dr Said it removed many furture pre cancers and cancers from forming .So I will keep taking the Nicotinamide and keep getting 6 month check ups and have these basal cells removed ASAP from now on good luck to all those who are suffering with life long skin cancers . But the sooner they are removed the smaller the scar . I learned the hard way you can say I got fooled by the small Mohs procedure I had the first time best of luck to all your friend Zoro lol

You have no idea and you are set in a waiting room over and over while they wait for the labs (in an uncomfortable waiting room with other people) not knowing whether you will have a nose or not, or a discolored looking graft. It is terrrible and this is a whitewash of this awful barbaric procedure.

@nancynord260 I was just diagnosed yesterday and after learning about this horrifying procedure your view sums up how I feel. With all of the modern technology available, this seems primitive and antiquated. It’s just cutting it out little by little, even in highly visible areas like the face - you’d think you stepped back in time to a primitive long-ago era. Nothing about this is advanced; it’s about as modern as an iron lung. Folks are left with parts of their faces missing. Mine is on my nose, not caught early at all and I cannot believe in this day and age that this is the best we can do. The physical deformity with patients looking ghoulish adds a devastating layer to an already traumatic cancer diagnosis. Future generations will look back at these photos of today’s patients with horror movie faces and feel grateful that they missed out on this barbarism.

@@kristinadetmer8332 I pray that you will have a good result. It is so scary, it took forever for my scar and flap to fade, but I hardly notice it now. Get a second opinion if you can and let them know how important this is to you. Good luck and God speed on your healing journey.

@nancynord260 Thank you for your kind words. I’m glad you are healing physically. That’s a good idea to get a couple of different opinions. This is an extremely hard time for sure, I never expected to be worried about losing my nose or a chunk of my face.

It looks painful. I have a growth on my nose & it bleeds. Looks like I'm going to my doctor who I'm not on good terms with since I recently told him that 15 years of Parkinson's medication is enough. Ces't La Vie. 😁
