#7 did not happen! I was the lead engineer of the Atoll large floating platform. This story of the Atoll sinking is frequently told, but is wrong. The Atoll is actually eight separate platforms held together with special compliant links (21 in all). One of those links tore off its mount during the storm, and the Atoll had to be towed in for the link to be repaired (a fairly easy fix). What did sink was the Slaver’s tower, shown in this video at 3:52. It was lifted and repaired at minimal cost since it was small. These two events got merged together in the media to create this false story about the Atoll sinking. Working on that set is still one of the highlights of my engineering career.

Ah The Postman.... Aka that movie with Tom Petty in it. ;-) The movie is good... But the book is phenomenal. there is a point in it where the Holenist army is considering allowing the Postman's army a measure of mercy, until he realizes that the people that he had been skirmishing with on his southern border wasn't the postman's people at all, but were another force entirely from California that was following the same ideology as the postman and his army... leading into the book's endgame. I enjoy The Postman, but Waterworld just bored me. I never heard anything of the behind the scenes troubles of Waterworld so that didn't influence my dislike of it either.
YES! And he’s about my age in The Postman (his character being born in the mid-1970s, putting him somewhere in his late 30s to mid-40s in 2013 . . . I forget if it’s stated in the movie _exactly_ how old he is/when he was born). It’s silly, but this small connection made the movie even more personable, and thankful that kind of craziness would never happen in my lifetime in my country . . . Though in recent months I’ve actually thought of this movie a couple times being more of a frighteningly realistic possibility.
This movie was and remains one of my absolute FAVORITES! I never understood all the hate. It’s so fun! Dennis Hopper is next level hilarious. Kevin Costner and his deadpan delivery is LIFE and his scenes with Tina Majorino are so great. I can watch it over and over. Great deep dive on this! (See what I did there... 😂) Hope all is well in your neck of the woods! I know Australia is going through what the US went through in March...well and now. ENDLESS Pandemic. Hang in there. Once we have our election in November I’m fairly certain it will cure this virus. *ahem* I hope that’s true. Not sure if it will be. 🤞🏼 stay safe!

Waterworld actually turned a profit once home media sales were factored in. On a side note, I enjoyed the Ulysses cut the best, and found all three version to be fine. Fun fact: The Ulysses cut started life as a crowd sourced fan edit. Eventually the original production company snapped it up and polished it and released it as the current DVD.

My favorite scene is when he drops the flare and blows up the ship.....I just love how grateful the tank monitor is that it's finally over!!! "Oh thank God!!!"
“It’s OK to like a movie despite its behind-the-scenes struggles. Because otherwise, those struggles would’ve been for nothing” well said minty, well said indeed!!!!!!
I've always thought that the most wildly improbable aspect of the story was that he didn't have babies scattered all over the archipelago. He was rich, good looking, and magnificently adapted to a harsh environment. He wouldn't have gotten a wink of sleep when they had him locked up, because young women would have been scaling the fence to catch some of that mutant DNA. Because that's how natural selection works.
Thanks Much Minty, and the last comment on Hopper's Eye was so on point man and I burst out in full on laughter as soon as that came out of your mouth. Thanks again
Tell em about it. It occurred about fifty miles south of where I am near Pittsburgh PA in West Virginia. At least I was not the only one who caught his mistake.
The scene in which the Mariner (Costner) teaches Enola how to swim is one of most touching, sweetest pieces of cinema ever, scored with beautiful music. It underscores the theme of the movie .. Learning how to get along with Nature in an otherwise harsh world. Wonderful and poignant. Thank you, Kevin. Truly a masterpiece of cinema. I got it!
You know what dude, I also love this movie. I saw it in the cinema when it came out and I couldn't understand all the hate, still don't understand the hate.
I enjoyed Waterworld as well and got to experience it in theaters back then! The movie shares the name with my favorite childhood water park in Houston Tx. RIP WaterWorld and AstroWorld.
Nick Pierce - Yes, I felt bad about correcting all of them. There were at least three . . . and it’s kind of a thing in his vids, so . . . 😂 (and you’ve got too many a’s in your pronunciation)
DUDE! Jack Black is in a ton of good lil early roles. He’s briefly in DemolitionMan, The Jackyl, Waterworld, etc. the man deserves his career for sure. I love School of Rock, my favorite JB movie. Joan Cusack is great too.
I find one video of yours and watch it .... now here I am binge watching your channel like its a new Netflix series. Keep making great fun content. I look forward to more

I love this movie! Seen it many times, its got action, adventure, a bit of mystery lots of blowing things up! If it was in the cinema now I would totally watch it :)

Hi Minty, thanks for this video. I enjoyed Waterworld when it first came out in the cinema and don't understand what all the fuss was about. It was like Mad Max on water but I never though of that as a bad thing. I didn't know about the Ulysses Cut so thanks for that info, I bought the Blu Ray and am enjoying the extra footage. Keep up the good work. All the best from the UK 👍
Great presentation. I too really liked Water World. It's a bit too long to watch multiple times, but I can see watching it in 2 parts. Thanks for sharing edited to add: One thing I found really cool about this movie is how the Universal Studios Globe logo transforms into Water World when the ice caps melt and the camera just zooms into the start of the movie.

Also Hilary is referring to you being a sailor and the reputation that sailors curse a lot.
Every movie you talk about are all my beloved classics . Keep em coming brother.
I absolutely love WaterWorld ...the long version is the best..
I’ve watched it, and it’s better than the cinematic version that’s for sure
One of my all time favorites! Well done on your review on it also!! 🙏🏼😉
👍
I've always thought that the most wildly improbable aspect of the story was that he didn't have babies scattered all over the archipelago. He was rich, good looking, and magnificently adapted to a harsh environment. He wouldn't have gotten a wink of sleep when they had him locked up, because young women would have been scaling the fence to catch some of that mutant DNA. Because that's how natural selection works.
Delighted u did this film I loved this filming growing up and it does not deserve the negative criticism it got. It’s a fantastic film.
I heard this movie is coined as being "Mad Max" on water.
Well, similar, but it was also panned as being one of the worst movies ever made......even at the time.
More like a Road Warrior copy. I still liked Waterworld though.
Mad Max lost all his paper making the movie

I usually call it "Mad Max goes fishing", because that's what it mostly is.
Yes. One of my all time favorites.
Really like this movie, the mood, the acting, the soundtrack and pace of the movie was perfect for and adventure movie.
I don't understand why it's crapped on so much.
It's water world ya dumb youngsters 😂😂😂😂
😱 are you serious, ITS FRICKING TRAGIC.... LOOK AT IT!

One of the happiest memories of my childhood is watching Waterworld at the movie theater with my dad.
Sorry, but "Roar" would still _easily_ take the "wow, how did nobody die making this" prize.
Good movie, and great performance from the "stage" actors at Universal Studios - their live version was AWESOME
Hatfields and McCoy's, a western? Oh minty🤦♂️

Uh, no, it's considered "The South".

I got it!
Like John Wayne did. Throw the kid in the water to learn how to swim lol
"Who Runs Waterworld?!"
"Kevin Costner!"
...show us.. the gills..
But MasterBlaster runs Bartertown....

Costner has made a ton of great movies. I'd love to see you do a perfect world.
Is “YOU-lis-eze” how people say “you-LIS-eze” in Australia?
also "leVIE a athan"
Nick Pierce - Yes, I felt bad about correcting all of them. There were at least three . . . and it’s kind of a thing in his vids, so . . . 😂
(and you’ve got too many a’s in your pronunciation)
An excellent watch again Minty. Well researched and entertaining.
Top bloke.
They need to remake this. Sure the movie sucks, buts it’s an idea with a lot of potential
Ive watched this movie many times throughout the years. One of my favorites
DUDE! Jack Black is in a ton of good lil early roles. He’s briefly in DemolitionMan, The Jackyl, Waterworld, etc. the man deserves his career for sure. I love School of Rock, my favorite JB movie. Joan Cusack is great too.
My fave early Jack Black is Airborne.
Thanks Minty, another one of my absolute favorites. They need to make a sequel.
"The Burbs"
Searched it, but none under Minty I saw.
The Burbs was an awesome movie, one of my all time favorites.
It is one of my favorites too, it is very underrated.
I thought I was the only human that likes this movie, and I'm being dead serious.
Love this movie. These were 10 things I knew about Waterworld already, but still fun to watch.
One of the worst movies ever made point blank
This is one of my favorite movies and I agree with you that it is an exciting and fun film to watch.
I find one video of yours and watch it .... now here I am binge watching your channel like its a new Netflix series. Keep making great fun content. I look forward to more
Agreed. Loved the film as a kid and would watch it any time it appear on TV in the UK.
Big fan of waterworld. Had the vhs as a kid and watched it over and over again, so very nostalgic for me. Actually just watched this recently with my kids (fast forward the naughty parts!) and they enjoyed it 👍
I remember watching Water World in the theaters as a kid and I loved it. The stunts still hold up to this day to me.
Great film. Awesome action, cinematography and sets.
Cyborg, water world, mád max.....love these type of films
Another great look at a film. Good job Minty!
It's a rewatchable movie for sure... Loved.it
This is still one of my all time favorite movies since it came out.
Back in 1995, I worked with the marketing manager for Waterworlds home video release. He nicknamed it Fishtar and Waterflop. Made me chuckle
We have always Loved this movie since it's 1st Release & even enjoyed the Action Show @ Universal Studios.....
I agree with you completely Minty. I loved Waterworld. Great movie.
I like this movie too plus Jean Triplehorn.
Great info as always, though the "leviathan" pronunciation kinda cracked me up.
Also, for anyone who hasn't heard the soundtrack, it's one of the best of the era. Really defines "Adventure Theme"
I love this movie! Seen it many times, its got action, adventure, a bit of mystery lots of blowing things up! If it was in the cinema now I would totally watch it :)
I loved this movie. I had a ton of action figures including a smoker on a wave runner and the Mariner's ship.
Totally dig this movie. Love Kevin's cold attitude in this movie. It's a blast.
Have always enjoyed watching Waterworld, probably watch it 5 times since I first saw it.
Ones of my favourite movies ever!
I have probably seen this 10 times and could easily watch it again!
You JUST RECENTLY posted about this movie? I found it just yesterday at Wal-Mart. I just finished it. I wanted to say THANK YOU HUN!! You always such an open mind...I LOVE THAT THE MOST ABOUT YOUR CHANNEL!! You're the reason I even bothered! It was great!! Lotsa ❤ from eastern Maine here in the United States! I've been a fan for a long time now. Take care dear!!
So glad to hear I'm not the only one who loves Water World!
I loved this movie too. I lost count how many times I watched it. I think Costner is an accomplished actor.
Great presentation. I too really liked Water World. It's a bit too long to watch multiple times, but I can see watching it in 2 parts. Thanks for sharing
edited to add: One thing I found really cool about this movie is how the Universal Studios Globe logo transforms into Water World when the ice caps melt and the camera just zooms into the start of the movie.
Love this movie so much. Got the standard and 4K DVD’s, and the CD score. 😎💙
I loved this movie. Then and most certainly now.
Thank you for this one. I have honestly have forgotten about this gem. Ive seen it as a kid myself and loved it. Im a big madmax fan myself and consider this a madmax inspired film. Guess what Im watching tonight? Waterworld!
