For BP is even worse bc they're basically re recording demos that were written for their senior group 2NE1 that have been sitting on a computer for years lol. 1. Western media often depicts these issues without nuance or cultural sensitivity and can distort things to make things worse than they are
      2. Some companies are worse than others and some are actually rather decent, as much as a corporation can be decent. Many artists are given freedom to self produce (Stray Kids) and are given adequate support for their mental and physical wellbeing (Ateez) and many aren’t.
      3. As Tom Scott says, people always draw the line below what they actually do. Supporting kpop is bad but it’s ok to watch anime where animators are treated just as badly, if not worse. Kpop is bad, but corporate American pop music is okay. Kpop is bad but buying phones made in Chinese factories where workers are overworked is okay. Where do we draw the line?
      4. The issues in kpop are a small symptom of a wider capitalistic issue that surrounds Korean society and is far more complicated and nuanced than “kpop bad.” May as well boycott everything that comes from Korea if you want to avoid the stuff, so say goodbye to your Samsung phone. And don’t think you can just consume Japanese media bc these issues are rampant there too.
So people do listen to you, they probably just think you’re not exploring this in a nuanced enough way.

It's about going to the mall when boys fuck things up in your life, music to dance in front of your mirror to when you feel like a baddie and it's supposed to very female capitalist oriented (kind of conflicting given the predatory producers in the wider K-pop scene) commercial and designed for slumber parties with giant pieces of candy. Hey Brad! 💚 I don’t know if you care about any of this, but I’ll give you a few key reasons as to why BLACKPINK’s music is the way that it is, from someone who used to be a fan. A little r/HobbyDrama moment on your comment section:
1 - BLACKPINK debuted under a company called YG Entertainment, which was founded by a member of one of the first and biggest k-pop groups back in the 90s, responsible for popularizing hip-hop’s sound in South Korea. This shows in YG Entertainment’s repertoire, they’re one of the big 3 companies in the k-pop industry, and their signature style is usually hip-hop. Problematic, caricature-ish, appropriating hip-hop… but hip-hop 🙂
2 - What BLACKPINK do in k-pop is considered “girl crush”. “Girl crush” is a genre of k-pop concept (visuals) that consist of very charismatic music, performances, fashion style, etc. Very much “badass” and in-your-face, girl power! Back when they debuted, in 2016, k-pop was going in a more cutesy, dream pop direction, so their debut was very refreshing. With YG Entertainment being one of the big 3 companies, their arrival was also highly anticipated and they were very successful, and still are. I would probably say that aside from their senior group, 2NE1, which probably helped popularize if not fully created this “girl crush” concept, BLACKPINK are the current blueprint for “girl crush”, and if you get into k-pop you’ll probably come across a lot of groups that remind you of BLACKPINK.
3 - One of the masterminds behind YG Entertainment’s signature style is this producer called Teddy Park. He helped create many of YG’s biggest hits spanning from the late 2000s to the early 2010s. Due to his success as a producer, Teddy’s skills became a must on pretty much every single music release that came from YG Entertainment. Unfortunately this means two things: YG’s style did not evolve past the 2010s - which was their peak - and in my opinion that shows in BLACKPINK’s music. The company has a small variety of other in-house producers (like 3?) and these are mostly the people they work with. They don’t usually seek producers outside the company, they have a very tight grip on what their music should sound like and they’re not willing to let go of it no matter how outdated it sounds; secondly, since Teddy’s input is needed on every release, it means a group like BLACKPINK, in which the members aren’t allowed input in their music and creative freedom, as opposed to some other artists in the company (misogyny 😍) is very much at the mercy of the availability on his schedule, since he has to supervise everything. A k-pop group like BLACKPINK, which is nearing their contract renewal (meaning, they might disband soon), should have a much bigger discography than they do, and specially one that shows growth. They have around 25+ original songs, released throughout almost 7 years. For comparison, k-pop group TWICE, that also debuted under another big 3 company, found similar success to BLACKPINK, and debuted only a year prior, recently renewed their contracts with their respective company - if they had disbanded, they would’ve disbanded with about 150 songs under their belt.
Only until recently has YG Entertainment allowed them to have some input, after many complaints from the fans and probably the members themselves.
4 - BEKUM BOOM. This is the person I have the most beef with within BLACKPINK’s team. She’s a singer and songwriter and is responsible for the annoying and constant incorrect use of AAVE you hear in all of BLACKPINK’s songs. She has been working with YG Entertainment since the group’s debut I think? She’s not Korean… she’s not black either! She’s a white girl from Orange County, California, and her name is Rebecca. She has some solo music and the lyrics are pretty much the same narcissistic “I’m such a baddie” lyrics she writes for BLACKPINK. Her (annoying) voice technique is also very similar to the voice the rapper of the group does in every song so I’m assuming she’s probably responsible for that as well. She’s very much a culture vulture.
That’s all I guess? To make a long story short, BLACKPINK have very little input in their music, their label is outdated and unwilling to let go of their golden years from the early 2010s, and since BLACKPINK are the moneymakers they won’t ever change their sound, because playing safe still pays the bills. And because of that, BLACKPINK will never reach their full potential.
BLACKPINK discography standouts I recommend: *Whistle*, Playing With Fire, *Pretty Savage*, *Sour Candy* (it’s a Lady Gaga song and they were featured on it), See U Later. I really recommend member Rosé’s solo work, specially the b-side “Gone” - which she wanted to have as main single, but the company needed her to go EDM with that, despite Rosé being a more indie ‘bananies and avacadie’ type of artist. Rosé wrote both of the songs on her solo single album.

@@catloaff yes! My guess is probably because Teddy actually used put a little soul into it back then 😭 I genuinely feel like the man got overworked and reached his creative peak or hit a block. And YG got stuck in time, feels like they’re struggling to admit they’re not a top label anymore and artistically wise they’ve been surpassed by a bunch of mid-tier k-pop labels that put out much better music despite not having nearly half their budget and capital. So they just hold on to what they think made/makes them great, while the rest of the industry moves on. It’s sad to watch because they used to be the vanguard of the industry and started many trends. Truly the fall of a giant

Please don't judge kpop through Blackpink because it's a depressing example, their producer Teddy can't stop grabbing one Indian-sounding sample from the KSHMR collection and adding "boom boom boom" over it or some shit. It's catastrophic and a special occurrence

I think the biggest issue stems from the fact that blackpink is highly over praised strictly because they are the "most popular girl group in the world" which to a degree that isn't a lie, though that still doesn't mean their music is necessarily good. The biggest issue I've always had with blackpink is the lack of diversity in their music. The generic indian samples, the misused aave, the random lyrics and the terrible rapping (in their earlier music), just makes them a mid group all together

These songs by BlackPink are talking about how good their lives are and everyone wants to be them. Sadly though, being big in the KPop industry means you lead a highly scrutinized life. KPop stans can turn on you and bully you relentlessly just for dating certain people (or even dating at all because they often have to play into being the dream romantic partner for fans) doing anything perceived as actually bad by fans (not the sort of "toughness" or "badness" they say they have in their songs), or even just not fitting certain beauty standards. Seeing the line, "'Cause no-one's keeping tally, I do what I want with who I like" on the song Tally is sad.

Even as an InSomnia, I would love to hear your take on them, good or bad. They way you talk about music is fascinating to me. Probably the full honesty.

I believe, and please any blinks let me know if I'm wrong, Jisoo wanted to be an actress, Jennie wanted to be a model, Lisa wanted to be a choreographer or backup dancer, and I believe Rose is the only one who really wanted to be in the music industry.
It doesn't help that the girls have already shown that they are limited. Jennie's lyric book was stolen after she showed it on a VLive which is weird since the book never left their dorm. Also, people don't realize that these 'bad bitches' aren't what you want to be, but many people desire it, like teenagers and young adults. Artists and songs? A lot of people will hear bp and bts English songs and then declare everything as soulless trash. I don't care for bp, but even with bts they have really great older music before they got as big as they are now.
IU - I'd recommend the whole Modern times epilogue album as well as chat shire and palette. Really a lot of her later albums are fantastic (the ones where she was writing the songs either in part or entirely on her own, so Modern times and onwards). She has a great voice for ballads too. Her songs Through The Night, My Sea, Above the time, Empty Cup and Love Poem are particularly beautiful.
Jonghyun - Literally has some of the best music ever imo one of my favorite artists of all time. His albums story op 1 and 2 are very beautiful lyrically and sonically, and for something more upbeat try She Is, Base or Poet | Artist which are also all fantastic.
SHINee - the group Jonghyun is in, he wrote songs for them sometimes but typically the group music from artists is going to be more "commercial" and less personal. Still they have a diverse discography. Having been in the industry for nearly 15 years they have done all kinds of genres and have amazing vocals all around. Even if you dont care for the lyrics, the performances should feel passionate enough to not be "soulless," to you. Since they're really diverse its hard to say where to start but some of my favorite albums are The Misconceptions of Us, 1 of 1, Odd, and The Story of Light - Epilogue.
Twice - Often seen as generic or whatever but their music is fantastically made pop music that shouldn't be written off just because it's in Korean. My favorite albums of theirs are Feel Special, Eyes Wide Open, Twicetagram. Their newest bum Between 1&2 is also really good. Some highlight songs from their catalog are Three Times A Day, Rainbow, Love Line, You in my Heart, Missing U, One in a Million, Up No More, Say Something, 21:29, Love Foolish, Sunset, Say you love me, After Moon, Jaljayo Good Night and too many more to count. This isn't even counting their singles, this is just my personal favorites.
      - Mamamoo - Amazing vocals and you'll love them if you like R&B or jazz sounds a lot and ballads too. Favorite songs include Mr Ambiguous, Better, Ten Night, 4x4ever, LIEC, Diamond, No more drama, Wind Flower, Where are u, Bad Bye, Um oh ah yeh, Egotistic, Rainy Season, Midnight summer dream, Freakin Shoes, Yes I am, Decalcomanie, Starry night, be calm, Hello (Solar solo), 25, Words don't come easy, I miss you. Reality in BLACK is my favorite of their albums but I think that they have a lot of individually strong songs
      - Red Velvet - Diverse but consistent is the usual case for SM artists and RV are no exception. Their albums The Red and The Perfect Red Velvet are my personal favorites.
      - Nct 127 - interesting production especially on their singles and safer bsides often leaning into rnb and dance. My fave album is Neo Zone but I also think that all of their singles/title tracks should be checked out as a proper introduction to what they're all about as a group
      - Loona - Their music is very diverse and forward thinking in the production department. Odd eye circle are often thought of as the favorite. Their solo songs are fantastic as well. Some songs to check out are New, d-1, Egoist, Heat, butterfly, where you at, Sweet Crazy Love, Girl Front, Twilight, Eclipse, Singing in the rain, Love letter, Stylish, Number 1, 365, Fall Again, Pale Blue Dot, Universe, Oh Yes I Am, Rain51db, Sonatine, Let me in, Around you... Again too many to name. They are kind of the token favorite of online music communities like RateYourMusic so they might be up your alley.
If I had to say just a few artists to pick, try IU and Jonghyun first.

I think if you're going into kpop with a predesposed belief that you can't overlook that it's all corporate manufactured and tailored, and not meet the music at its own level, you're always going to end up not enjoying it because all you'll see will affirm that. It's sort of the same as people who constantly worry about industry plants, they never enjoy the music produced solely because they've got the preconcieved notion that the music can't be enjoyed because it comes from the "industry". For the longest time I wasn't able to look past that myself, but when I did I think I started appreciating kpop songs a lot more in their ownright. Ofc the industry isn't good or really even a nice thing, but it's a major avenue to create music in the world we live in and I'm not quite willing to discount the music entirely due to that.
Edit: Should say I'm still not really a fan of Black Pink specifically, but I was touching upon points I felt like are being echoed more broadly at kpop rn.

Same, can't believe it. Their last album was a 10/100 to me. Can't believe they've sold out and fallen off

When were they ever really on top? They’ve almost always been the most corporately whitewashed “girl crush”group in the scene

Big kpop fan here and BP is one of the more controversial groups because they're liked by the general audience but a big percentage of kpop listeners don't like their music, especially the newer songs. I'd recommend LOONA, TWICE and Red Velvet as the music community approved kpop.

definitely a weird corporate manufactured pop movement. sounds really catchy production is good but yeah, hard to get behind it. remember malice mizer and der en gray? or mo one remembers the jrock and jpop movement back in early 2000s.
also the pink venom song remedied me of mindless self indulgence - bring the pain. sounds great but lyrics are a cringe. make my butt clench

About blackpink, honestly I'm probably one of the biggest fans of them that has seen this video from what I saw in the comments 😂😂, but while I do kinda like this album I do feel like the girls might have been a bit annoyed with the agency because they didn't let them write or produce not even as much as on the last album and they also only got 8 songs after 2 years when they also had 8 songs so those things together probably made them less excited about this new album. One of the members had like a really long message about how happy and excited she was about the last album at that time and this time she didn't put any caption so yeah

I dont know why but you should try to listen to Jack in the Box from j-hope :D some of these have nice beats It's definitely better than this, even though I have nothing against BlackPink, just not my music

You really need to listen to that BewhY album “The Movie Star” I sent songs for on stream. That’s an occation where Korean Hip Hop sounds like actual music rather than a product
