I've learned programming on my very old laptop a 2008 model with 2gb of ram core 2 duo processor but still it was more than enough to have a good foundation on programming so if you have a low end pc, relax and keep coding
I just started my CS program and I'm using same spec(2GB ram, intel core 2 duo laptop). I really don't have any trouble as of now but I intend to get a better laptop before this year runs out.

Amazing video! And it was very helpful for me because this days I am searching to buy a new laptop because my old hp laptop wants upgrade . Your tips helps me a lot because I want to buy something affordable and good for coding at the same time! Also I want to say that is very important to have 8gb of ram because if you want to keep this laptop for a long time, you will surely need it! Awesome job, as all of your videos!
He is absolutely right about the processor! I tried to lean on a low end dual core all in one but it was painful so I got a used MacBook Pro 2011 13inch i7 16gb ram 1tb ssd and it is AMAZING for the price i paid. I am typing this from it. However, I decided to get into machine learning so I got a desktop with the ryzen 7 2700X and RTX 2060 Super. Great machines.
I would focus on getting a laptop with at least 16 GB of RAM and with NVMe drive (at least 256 GB) plus with good support for virtualization. NVMe drive is a huge advantage when it comes to overall experience and reponsiveness.
This is a good quick guide on choosing laptop. I had Lenovo i3 7020 , 15 in, 256 SSD and 8GB of ram. It works fine and fast for Android studio, Intli J, VS code, Figma, Adobe XD. Tim, it would be awesome if you can make review on affordable monitor for dual monitor too. Cheers
Thank you for a genuinely helpful and practical advice to all the freshers out there. I just got done with my research on all the Desktop / Laptop machines. Got my sister an i5 10th gen + 512 GB NVMe SSD (Acer Aspire 5). I would personally consider an AMD Ryzen 4th gen plus a dedicated GPU (nothing great just fit in a thin & light). Also one thing I noticed is that there is a huge difference in value being offered to consumers in USA vs other countries. I'm from New Delhi, India. And for the same reason I paid 25% premium compared to US market. That HP ENVY you showed sells for Twice the amount here. Thank you for the vid!
I started programming on my old HP laptop. Specs: i3 5th gen, 8GB ram, 1TB HDD, 720p 15inch display. Kinda gets the job done. Takes too long to launch any IDE. RUclips videos lag while in 1080p 60FPS, approx 1hr of battery life, and obviously, no fancy development work. I'm planning to buy the HP Omen 15 with Rizen 5. I feel like it would be a good balance between price and performance. Plus it has a really good screen and minimalist design for a gaming laptop.
I got a Dell Inspiron 5051 for $724 12GB of RAM 512 GB PCIe SSD (Integrated graphics runs Minecraft at 35% usage) Fingerprint scanner Type C and 2 3.0 ports 15" IPS monitor. 10th gen i5 4 core 8 thread.

Graphics cards make any computer expensive. In a laptop they cannot be as efficient as in a pc on top of that because of the restricted space which leads to cooling problems. When needing them for machine learning, the idea would be to have that calculated with a graphic card which sits inside a pc instead of a laptop. How to hand these calculations over via internet to the pc at home would be a good project. Especially useful for photographing anything with a smart phone in nature like birds, mushrooms, etc, having the graphic card at home calculate what that most likely is.
I3 -> r3 i5 -> r5 i9 -> r9. But dont look only this on both side. Intel and amd has i/r 9 models, that has same power, than i/r 3. Look for Ghz, cores, threads, and real world tests, like cinebench r20.SFBE

I have Lenovo ideapad 320, 3 years old. Specs are - 8 GB RAM, USB type C (3.1) Gen 1, i3 6th Gen, 15.6 inch screen. It had Windows 8.1 installed and had 2TB of space (HDD) but it was very slow to be honest. Now I have installed Ubuntu and because my hard disk crashed I have switched to 240 GB SSD and this thing is a beast now 🔥 It is lightning fast! I highly recommend everyone getting a SSD if he/she can afford.
I started to learn to program on a Acer Aspire 3 with a Pentium 4417U. And pretty soon when I needed a good machine I upgraded to an ASUS TUF A15. But, my starting 8 months I used the Acer Aspire 3.
Hi Tim, not sure if that topic is worth to record separate video, but.. How is your experience, as a developer, with MacBook? I think about buying MacBook, but my friend told me that there are a lot of environmental problems when trying to set up something (Python, etc.). Could you please tell something more about that? I would use it for stuff other than development as well.
4GB of ram is minimum only on linux. 8GB of ram on windows gets eaten by bloat alone. U can of course remove this by disabling a whole ton of background processes, but there is no guarantee to stability if you do so. If u want a laptop to run very fast on low spec hardware, install linux on it. I recommend any arch based distro or arch if you are already into linux. Arch isn't that hard to install, in actuality and i recently heard of a small script that does it for you called Archfi.
Yes it is enough to learn on, but if you are willing to get more performance when you learned enough and want to download software and library’s etc. You’re going to want a little bit more out of your computer
Just bought an iPad and I think you can't do any development on there without any Cloud IDE (even tough XCode should Code, but then you are limited to Swift/Obj.-C). Guess I'll have to buy a Laptop in 2 years :D

I am left wondering if Canada Gigs are different from US Gigs in the same way that Imperial Gallons are different from US Gallons. Also of note, I would never personally code on a laptop if I wasn't forced to by circumstance(s). Do you have any recommendations for desktop builds? If not, why not?
What I did recently is look for an i7 (10thgen) laptop with a low RAM and only using an HDD then I bought an additional 8GB RAM and a 500GB nvme SSD and installed it myself. I was able to save quite some money. I spent only around $700 including all the upgrades.
For people working with 3d models and graphics just wait for the RTX 3000 series they made the RTX 2000 series absolutely and they are really good value for the money. 500$ for a RTX 3070 with performance supposedly better than the 2080ti ( a 1200-1300$ card).
If budget allows, go for new 16 inch mbp. Otherwise it’s not a bad idea to get a used 13 inch mbp. I’m not a mac fanboy, I used hp, Lenovo, msi laptops and all of them start to have little annoying quirks after one or two years, while their customer services are not quite responsive. Picked up my wife’s 6+ year old mbp recently for travel. Did some coding in python and java, running OK. It’s not blazing fast, but I know I can trust it. And the battery can still last me more than 5 hours, after 6 years! My msi can run on battery for 20 seconds most. Yes it has powerful graphic card and bigger memory, but useless unless sitting next to power outlet all the time. Not to mention the display deteriorated much faster than mbp. A used mbp is like a used Lexus cars, still a bit expensive, not most horsepower for the money, but it’s comfortable and can go a long way.
Programming languages are useless if you are not trained to solve complex problems, cause programming is not languages but problems solving. To become a programmer, you need to get a good Math and C.Sc education.
Not very much, from my expirence you would need some decent graphic card, it's good if you have nvidia and some Intel integrated. I would say 2gb for now are still okay, and 4 would be great
Well I'm not rich...so I've been using a Lenovo ThinkPad T430 with a quad-core i5.....16GB of RAM...and its got a 1TB SSD in it. And its running Fedora Linux...and is FAST AS HELL!....so I'm good...and when I connect it to my 24" IPD HD monitor?....its like...the "sleeper machine"...hahaha....because it looks GORGEOUS! And yes....Lenovo's DO have great keyboards!! then BEST KEYBOARDS on a laptop....period! The best part?....T-430's are considered "old"...so you can get one nice and cheap!...(And there's a 15-inch version as well!...which is even better for screen "real estate"!) In a laptop they cannot be as efficient as in a pc on top of that because of the restricted space which leads to cooling problems.

Ive got a HP gaming laptop & an M1 macbook air. Both are the budget options on both sides.
Newbie- I started w/ used 2015 MacBook Air from friend @ $250USD. No probs so far but saving $3k USD for stronger machine. All comments + discussion = helpful.thx man appreciate your vids
I'm using a used ThinkPad x250 atm, the keyboard is a dream 😊
I started to learn to program on a Acer Aspire 3 with a Pentium 4417U. And pretty soon when I needed a good machine I upgraded to an ASUS TUF A15. But, my starting 8 months I used the Acer Aspire 3.
How is this guy even viable if he does not now basic ryzen CPU
I would like if you sometimes stay online and chat in Discord, Tim
Nice guide, I'm using HP 15DA-0434TX laptop with upgraded RAM to 8 GB :)
Tim: get quad core cpu
Me: laughs in 1st gen (January 2011) dual core i5 😂
Celeron has 4 core also 🗿
I recommend a macbook air. I got one and I have not regretted it. IT IS AMAZING
This was very helpful bro thank u for the tips . Most of the videos are not that informative and straight forward as u
This is Awesome!
Hi so if I'm self-learning coding can I go with the minimum specs? Is an online IDE good enough to learn on?
Yes it is enough to learn on, but if you are willing to get more performance when you learned enough and want to download software and library’s etc. You’re going to want a little bit more out of your computer
Hi friend, we are on the same boat, my laptop was 1gb ram 256gb ssd and a 2014 model, you are gonna be fine, because I'm fine
Just bought an iPad and I think you can't do any development on there without any Cloud IDE (even tough XCode should Code, but then you are limited to Swift/Obj.-C).
Guess I'll have to buy a Laptop in 2 years :D
why would anyone buy ipad
@@piratennn2720 for school lol?
I like these type of tech gadget videos a lot.
I agree with the guy that said 8GB minumum... Mine is 8GB, quad-core too and it's lagging a lot when multitasking
Ryzen ?
Don't forget >= 300 nits display and battery life.
is this best for programming & coding ?
[msi modern 14 c11m i5 11th Gen]
good recomendations
Thanks let's see why I am able to buy one
For 10 months, I had been following him, only I didn’t know that I hadn’t subscribed. 😂
If you subscribe, your feed will be filled with tutorials of technologies that you do not want to learn.
But youll be helping the guy that gives you all of it for free 🤷♂️
I bought the hp envy x360 few months back & it's quite good
Hey. What do you think about the dell Inspiron 16 (16gb RAM, 1TB, 12th gen with core i7) ?
Timestamps chapters is not showing at the play bar in this video. If you don't mind please check with that. And thank you all stuffs that are you doing which is help for us
6cores and 12 threads with 8gb of ram or 4cores and 8threads with 16gb of ram
Tbh 4 gb is a headache, also get a ssd if possible and don't focus about the GPU too much unless you are a gamer or something
Could make a Video on what to look for while building a PC
I am left wondering if Canada Gigs are different from US Gigs in the same way that Imperial Gallons are different from US Gallons. Also of note, I would never personally code on a laptop if I wasn't forced to by circumstance(s). Do you have any recommendations for desktop builds? If not, why not?
What I did recently is look for an i7 (10thgen) laptop with a low RAM and only using an HDD then I bought an additional 8GB RAM and a 500GB nvme SSD and installed it myself. I was able to save quite some money. I spent only around $700 including all the upgrades.
Which laptop?!
@@alephanull1953 Lenovo L3
Thanks for the informative video! Do you think 16 GB of RAM along with a quad processor is good enough for running android emulator?
Yes definitely
Please use time stamps!!
The video was awesome!!
There is some in the description!
Tbh if you're comfortable buying used just buy a laptop with his recommended specs for less than 400$ at max
Agreed!
Like name please??
8gb ram enough for Mobile dev ( kotlin , react , flutter ) ???
Thank a lot bro
I'm benefitted from your video
I am big fan of you Tim! I am 14 but with your inspirations I know many programming languages!
Programming languages are useless if you are not trained to solve complex problems, cause programming is not languages but problems solving. To become a programmer, you need to get a good Math and C.Sc education.
Random question guys, as a programmer (No design, no 3D, no animation, just software dev), should I care about the graphics card?
The best part?....T-430's are considered "old"...so you can get one nice and cheap!...(And there's a 15-inch version as well!...which is even better for screen "real estate"!)

Thank Tim. Lenovo are great machine.
I think I am ur 400000th subscriber
Am using think pad youga 11e since I was 16 Its has 4 GB ram and 299GB storage basically its the best am working 8 hrs per day
Your t-shirt awesome 👍
Ur minimums were actually very minimum
8 minimun at least :c and prefer an APU for the SoC ram soldered close to the cpu
@@HiberNAT 4GB is good if you're on a budget.
If you're running a minimal linux system, then 4GB of RAM is plenty ;)
Do we need graphic card
I would say go for a ryzen 3 cpu and 8gb ram and you Will be fine. Example acer inspire 3.
Hi, Tim! In my country, I could only find an IdeaPad Flex 5 with Ryzen 5 and 16gb of RAM. I couldn't find a Ryzen 7 matched with 8gb RAM, which would be great for me as I'm on a budget but would like to have a decent processor for a future proofed machine. The one I found with Ryzen 5 is approx. 910 CAD. Do you think it's much better if I keep looking for a similar machine with Ryzen 7 and 8gb RAM?
