Lore-wise, it’s sad that the prequel games brought so much to villains, but they end with a pathetic send off as side villains with weak missions (Bane in Origins to City, and Two-Face with Shadow to City/Knight). But in real time, we actually get a proper telling of their stories, and they are spectacular.
I didn't expect Crane to be the one responsible for creating Two-Face in the Arkhamverse since I always assume it was the mob, Harvey's dialogues in Arkham Knight during his side mission likely made everyone assume so. Which open up alot of questions like why Harvey never attempted to get revenge on Crane? Or why he would allied with Scarecrow in Arkham Knight?
Because Harvey doesn't know. We see in the scene that Harvey thought Matches Malone did it. Who worked for Falcone causing him to think the mob did it. That is why he never went after Crane or tried to get revenge. Because He thinks matches malone did it.
Well do keep in mind that Crane put the blame on matches Malone and Harvey fell for it, and the general public dosen't know who matches malone really is, they only know that he is a mob enforcer, working for falcone, the news report afterwards says that matches took the acid from crane and threw it harvey's face, so in a way for the rest of the world yeah it was the mob who did this to dent, but we the player and Bruce know the truth of course.

what i love about his portrayal of Scarecrow is that it gives the clear vocal evolution of his character. That we go from Elijah's voice to Dino Andrade in Arkham Asylum, and then to John Noble in Arkham Knight after he is mangled by Killer Croc.
Scarecrows one of the most interesting Arkham villains imo. By the time of Arkham Knight he’s gone from wanting to inflict terror on everyone as some sort of sadist thing to worshipping fear itself as a God. By his metrics he’s just doing his duty. Real sick bastard.
People think of Scarecrow as a psychological sadist, & he is. But modern versions of him are often depicted as starting out with a twisted desire to “help”. He thinks exposing people to their worst fears means they will eventually overcome them, & he sometimes just can’t understand why his victims aren’t grateful. I can see elements of that with this version. He’s so *frustrated* with Harley’s approach.
It kind of makes more sense now why Batman doesn't feel much remorse for scarecrow getting ate by croc, and why he's still on the lookout for him constantly after arkham asylum. It could also be the reason why Killer Croc attacks scarecrow at all.
@@scott6259 that is still true, but i can understand why iluminati would think that, that scarecrow was seeing all clients the same way as like Dr. Young was with bane in Arkham Asylum. Seeing his patients more as test subjects and more willing to test his toxins on than to actually take care of them.
@@scott6259No, I think he attacked him because he was going to poison the sewers, where Croc lived. If someone dropped a canister of mustard gas in your home, you probably want to beat the shit out of them too
@@quentinmrg6293I hear you BUT: Joker stole the spotlight from Hugo Strange at the end of City. Joker’s hallucination was pretty much the last boss/playable character in Arkham Knight and before that, he kept hanging out with Batman during the whole game. His role was significantly more important than Scarecrow’s and, arguably, even Arkham Knight’s. And the Riddler is more of a glorified Side Quest than a main villain in these games.
@@Victor-qx3vx Hugo was dead before so he didn't matter anymore. And either way we'd have to deal with Joker at the end since he's the biggest threat remaining besides Ivy by the end of the game.
Seeing how crane was back then and what he becomes in asylum/knight reminds me of what his psychologist says in one of his tapes how he’s starting to see crane isn’t actually crazy but just evil. He and joker are the biggest menaces of these games no wonder they teamed up in asylum.
The fight begins with you gliding across a void avoiding obstacles and I was thinking that it reminded me of the demon trial. Then I realised they actually remade the whole Ra's fight and it's glorious.
Seeing how Crane was responsible for the alter egos of so many of these people developing, it makes it so much more realistic that he'd be able to rally them all in Knight to work with him and makes him such a more dominating and terrifying villain as a whole
Same, even though I can’t play this game I still appreciate it for the amazing story details that it adds to the Arkhamverse. More Arkham games like this is what we need. I liked Suicide Squad more than most people but I’d take a game like Arkham Shadow over that any day of the week.

DID, or dissociative identity disorder, is when there's more than one personality to a person, usually created by the brain to protect the "main" personality. This personality may have its own name, beliefs, or even diseases. Generally, it's created so that the main personality doesn't have to face the actual abuse/helps with "coping" with someone's death. The problem is, over time you don't need the protective personality, which is why it itself starts to evolve and grow, or may actually still continue protecting the main personality. The whole topic is a lot more complicated than this, but I've searched and learned a lot on this particular mental illness. Very, very, very interesting.
I once had a friend with that illness. They blocked me on legit everything after a while though for something minor. We were really good friends one day and the next day they kinda just flipped a switch. Fucked me up for a while. I got a really good understanding of this illness during my time of knowing em at least. Gonna miss em but hey, that's life.
@@PulseAttack it's not from Wikipedia, and like I said, the whole topic is very, very, very, complicated. You'd have to read the whole Wikipedia page and still need to search more.
The two face story in this is epic. Dent will forever believe that falcone’s “informant malone” threw the acid cocktail in his face. But, in reality it’s alll CRANES fault for bringing that shadow drug in court *being scared that malone was going to smack him, slamming it onto Harvey’s FACE!!* and Bruce only can blame himself for what happened *accident or not*. He indirectly caused his childhood friend to become Two face.
@@UrosStankovic-xf9uqmakes sense. Bruce would remember as a scary, twisted old man. But when he meets him as an adult, he looks like a pretty normal guy
Honestly, I think what they did with the story overall-and making that fit into the Arkham continuity-was a stroke of genius. I’m not quite sure why I like this, tbh it sort of seems like a fan-fiction, but it feels refreshing.
Damn, they actually pulled an Arkham Knight... and they pulled it off, mostly because they followed 2 simple principles: 1. They didn't make it super overly obvious who the main villain is, while the Arkham Knight is someone who knows Batman's identity, all of his tricks and combat, and clearly has a grudge against him (plus all the Jason Todd flashbacks). 2. They gave a good setup for the Rat King, as opposed to the Arkham Knight, where they just kinda threw him in there and you don't really get to see how close he was to Batman except in that one scene where Joker taunts him with a photo of Batman and Tim Drake.
I feel very bad for Arnold. He seems like a decent guy who’s genuinely unwell and could probably live a normal life in an assisted living physiological facility but instead is launched into Blackgate prison where little good happens
I was more sad about Harley. She's so genuinely good and caring in this game. The basis of her entire character is that she believes there is good in everyone. It's tragic that she had to run into joker who's the antithesis to this.
Honestly Two-Face being the one with the memories that Batman is Bruce and Harvey not makes perfect sense given the game lore. Back in Knight if you do Two-Face’s quest after the Batman reveal, on the way to the GCPD, Harvey asks if it’s true about his identity, to which there is a silence and then Two-Face says “Don’t answer then, we know the truth”. Originally in Knight you can interpret this as Harvey in denial over the new information and Two-Face being willing to believe it, but with this game it twists the line into meaning, “You know perfectly well that I know, Bruce, even if he doesn’t”. Also I gotta say I think Harvey’s DID is handled well in Arkhamverse as a whole, which is great for a disability that is so stigmatised in media, especially given how you can interpret Two-Face as a very misguided protector of him who most likely became a holder for all of his anger - explaining why when Two-Face starts fronting again, Harvey becomes angry, when most of the time he’s quite calm.
This read of Two Face reminds me of Gollum from Lord of the Rings where he also has two personalities, where the aggressive one "protected" the docile one and in time lashed out at everyone and embraced being bad
@@Spongebrain97 My knowledge of DID comes from my friends who have it and one of them did tell me it’s protector alters can often be aggressive when it comes to protecting. I find it interesting either way
Can't wait for the next game about the scarcrow origin and an actual two face threat maybe even some. Penquin to introduce their fude between each other
I've been wanting Harvey/Two-Face to have more spotlight. He's always been my favorite Batman villain and I'm glad they gave my dude a chance to shine. I also love the flashbacks with kid Bruce and kid Harvey. It adds so much.
The most surprising thing I found out about the game: they actually confirmed the canonicity of Arkham Origins Blackgate Previously, it was questionable whether the mobile game was canon or not. Now with Shadow, its pretty much confirmed with balckgate prisoners mentioning the events of Blackgate as well as the gel gun gadget There is still the issue with Solomon Grundy appearing in Blackgate so they may have to eventually explain this "plothole"
@@b.u.l.1734but in Origins Blackgate they speak like they have history still So they’d have to explain that Also how Batman beat Grundy was with electricity (which healed him in City)
Yeah! I always counted the game as not canon, but I’m wrong, it is canon, the Grundy thing isn’t even a continuity issue looking at it, it was more so just me thinking it was when there really is no evidence to suggest it
@@GothamPaladin If you look around, you can see a grundy poster and he is a circus performer, so maybe batman knew because a who could be revived would be big news
@@TheWaffleEdits Batman knows of Grundy in that game because he was a legendary "circus freak" in Gotham. Everybody knows about him. Plus, Grundy lives in the sewers during that era of the Arkham timeline, so it's safe to assume he and Batman met there for the first time (like in the Long Halloween comic) sometime before the events of Blackgate or even Origins. And no, he defeats him by ripping his freaking heart out, lol. Batman obviously knew doing that wouldn't have killed him, so he knew of him and his weakness from before.
i absolutely love the fact they gave Ventriloquist and Scarface somewhat of a spotlight in this game. He is an underrated villain in the rouges gallery and a great character study in a similar way to Two Face, but at the same time, adding a possible paranormal aspect that makes a reader juggle on the idea on if Wesker was just crazy with multiple personalities, or if scarface was actually a Real living dummy. I love how for htis game, they kept that story 1 to 1 cause i wouldnt want to see it any other way for the arkhamverse.
This video was so gas bro love how much lore they pack into these games it really goes to show that this is still one the best pieces of Batman media to this day love Rodger coming back for this such a great choice since the 🐐 has passed keep up the great work man
I wasn’t expecting the story to be this detailed, but I really love what they pulled from long Halloween and how they put their own spin on the comics making it feel very very Arkham. This actually feels like it’s the missing gap between origins and asylum and not just some fanfiction.
Chronologically, I think Batman Arkham Asylum, City, Knight take place roughly 8-10 years after Origins and Shadow. Batman: Arkham Knight takes place a year after the events of Arkham City, which takes place 2 years after Arkham Asylum, which takes place 5 years after Arkham Origins. So, he's about 9-10 years in, also, adding the years from Suicide Squad, he'd be 14-15 years in.
Asylum is 7.5 years after Origins: Origins is Christmas Eve of year two (stated in-game) Knight is set on Halloween, ten years after Origins (stated in-game), thus making it year twelve Knight is set nine months after Joker’s cremation (stated in-game), placing City in late December of year eleven or early January of year twelve. City is set eighteen months after Asylum (stated multiple times in-game), placing Asylum in the summer of year ten. The difference between Christmas of year two and summer of year ten is seven and a half years.
Great deep dive into this game. You’ve gained a new sub from me. I hope the next Batman game allows us to play as both Batman and Robin (Dick Grayson) and dive into the relationship of the dynamic duo.
So it would seem that within the Arkhamverse, everything that is wrong with Gotham is because of Crane. After playing through the Arkham games, this revelation feels like a weight lifted off the shoulders of Bruce/Batman. 😉
Having just "lived" through it, I guarantee you Bruce is going to have nightmares about the day in the courthouse for the rest of his life and will never forgive himself.
@@nekogamer2508: It’s because in Arkham Knight there are TV Sings that read “Batman: Bad or Good for Gotham.” This make ME believe that Bruce/Batman deep down blame himself for Gotham’s Current State, but after Arkham Shadow it’s revealed that it was never his fault, and at the end of the day, Gotham DOES NEED, Batman.
In the tape with Harvey and Crane Crane States that Harvey promised he'd get rid of Gotham within a year which is the same thing he said him and Batman would do in Arkham Knight when you're taking him to the GCPD prison it just shows how much attention to detail camouflage made when making this game and making sure that it stayed in line with the arkhammers
To me, I think Bruce didn’t mind if his long time friend Harvey knew he was Batman. This is before Harvey goes full on villain mode, I think Batman always wanted Harvey to know in a way and this was the perfect time to do it
They really … did something very unique here and it is truly amazing for the series and continuity of the Arkham Series and being from Origins too . This works in a very different way than what a lot of us were experiencing
It they ever make another Arkham game it definitely needs to pick up after this game to continue Batman's character growth towards how he is in Asylum. They have like 10 years there to work with so they have plenty of space for several games if they want.
To be honest can we really say it was Crane who splashed the acid onto Harvey when the gameplay of it doesn't look well in that scene, looking like rather it was intended for Malone to actually knock it out of Crane's hand? VR games always have their ups and downs. It sounds definitely plausible to Crane's character though.
I love this side of Harley that we get to see. She truly wanted to help these people and was a good person. In my opinion it kinda shows how she was able to come back from her insanity a bit in SSKTJL. A lot of people were thinking it made no sense, but this kinda shows (along with Harleen’s voice in Arkham knight when entering detective mode as Harley) show that she always had good in her. All it took to bring some of it out was to take away the manipulator and give her some time. I think this game also gives a better connection between Harley and Batman, making the pull of Harley killing Batman just a little bit easier to swallow. Tbh, I enjoyed SSKTJL, and I’m really looking for anything to defend certain aspects of the game. Even though I know a lot of it can’t be defended 😭
i dont like harley written as a good character when throughout her time as jokers sidekick she kills many people and commits henouis acts but its okay because its tge jokers fault she did that cause she was abused and infatuated or something
Nah, SSKTJL fundamentally misunderstood Arkham Harley and confused her with movie Harley. Arkham Harley was at the point of being irredeemable. It's one of her darkest versions.
@@Casshio this game honestly shows that that wasn’t true, along with the voices in knight. There was always something there. She shouldn’t be forgiven for her crimes or not be punished for them, but it doesn’t mean she can’t become a batter person again
@@ShreddedGenius Harley is insane. Her actions shouldn't be forgiven or ignored, but batman's no kill rule and most of his stories because of that rule are supposed to show that he believes everyone deserves a chance to be reformed. On top of this, we've seen plenty of his villains end up being reformed before: Freeze, Harley, and even his biggest baddie, Joker. Several comics and other forms of media have shown this side of batman that I personally love. He's always willing to give his villains another chance. One example of Harley being reformed in other media, is in the animated series. Batman himself goes to congratulate her, which I think is supposed to be a lesson to us fans that a person's past doesn't define who they become in the future. It's never too late to decide you want to be better. I've also experienced this myself as well in real life. I wasn't an amazing person when I was younger, and actively made other people's lives worse. I don't want to be forgiven for the things I did when I was younger, nor do I think I deserve to be. But I am, and have been, trying to be and do better than the old me. So, I guess you could say I'm biased towards redemption arcs for characters, but I just think it's never too late for someone to be better than their past
In Carl Jung's theory, the Shadow is the dark side of our cognition. The negative aspects of ourselves we don't really try to acknowledge. Crane's treatment is interesting because rather than acknowledging and integrating the Shadow healthily, his treatment is to allow the Shadow to dominate the psyche

Definitely very chilling I might add but great writing for his character from WB Montreal. They really understand how to convey his guilt of the biggest of his life.
Ummm, Crane didn't "just" turn to throw the acid on Harvey. Even though there isn't a full animation for what happened due to the fact that it is the player's interaction that causes it, it's made very clear that Bruce knocked Crane's hand away from him in self defense. This caused Crane to accidentally spill the acid on Harvey. Crane didn't do it on purpose as what you said would suggest, and neither did Bruce.
Crazy how did such homework camoflaj did to tie shadow to the future arkham stories like everything happened in this game made sense continuing to asylum/city/knight. Even in that SSKTJL game harley did somehow know how to make his own fear gas for working with crane.
I'm more of a preference that Batman doesn't know about Joe Chill or where he is, just a crime that he won't ever be able to solve. Thats just me though. bruce/Malone didn't really push that drug thingie that Crane had. I watched it in a slower speed. For some reason as Bruce tried to counter, Crane just decided to turn around and throw it at Harvey. While I prefer Arkham try to stick to the comics as much as possible, I can't deny my feelings of how respectful they handled the story.

What is up with the Arkham prequels having a character ark for Batman while in the Rocksteady trilogy, he barely have one? Btw, it would be great if I could play the game… but that gosh darn VR exclusivity is so stupid
He does have arcs in the rocksteady trilogy. They’re just not as big, because it’s stuff that a Batman who’s been active this long would’ve already learned. In city he wants to go save Talia instead of saving everyone else. Of course, Alfred and Barbra tell him he has a responsibility to take care of first. This is something he definitely would have gone through before, but it still shows how he’s human. Batman also comes kinda close to giving up after he thinks Barbra died in Arkham Knight, but Alfred is there to remind him of his responsibilities as Batman. So he has mini arcs, but when you’ve been Batman for like 20, or a little less, years; you’ll have already learned most of these lessons
Two-Face has always been probably my favorite Batman villain when he’s in a story that actually knows how to use and characterize him well, which is sadly not very often (The Dark Knight and the Telltale series stand out as modern exceptions). This game? Oh man, they fucking nailed it. I’m seriously considering getting a headset for this, this team really knew what they were doing. Also, for the record at 16:40, Shadow takes place 7 years before Asylum. Knight takes place 10 years after Origins and nine months after Joker’s cremation (both stated in-game). City takes place 18 months after Asylum (stated many times in-game, notably with a lot of Quincy Sharp dialogue and bio text), placing Asylum seven and a half years after Origins. Origins is Christmas Eve of year two, Asylum is summer of year ten, City is either late December of year eleven or early January of year twelve, and Knight is Halloween of year twelve. Since Shadow is the summer after Origins, it’s almost exactly seven years before Asylum.
That bit with Jonathan Crane and Arnold Wesker was very dark, but I gotta admit I laughed quite a bit when Arnold's excuse for stabbing a guy 27 times until he died was that the guy was "very determined" to walk into the blade.
So you’re telling me, Harvey dent didn’t realize that Malone was Bruce Wayne in the court room, but the second he takes off his bat man cowl he sees Bruce Wayne. Now that’s writing
I like how one of the first Rat goons we fight is actually young Dick Grayson. You will only recognize him once he takes his signature combat stance and his hood off but it is for certain Dick Grayson.
I think an Arkham Shadow 2 is in the cards. There's so much more original stuff to unpack before we get to Asylum, and I love how the devs here have been Painstakingly respectful to the source material. Hell, they're more respectful than even Sefton Hill was. I hope we get another little prequel that shows Harleen becoming Quinn, maybe see more of the Ventriloquist. I'd love to see Arkham Asylum in its early days post-Origins, maybe see Crane fully become the Scarecrow. Side note, I love that Elijah Wood has the voice of Dino Andrade, but the cold and clinical line delivery of John Noble. He blends both versions of Arkham Scarecrow excellently.
Another thing to mention about Harvey Dent/Two-Face; a third personality is a call back to the animated series. On the show Harvey once created The Judge to try and kill Two-Face.

Elijah sounds so good as Crane, sounds like Arkham Asylum scarecrow, absolute goat
God i can just hear elijah doing some of the lines from arkham asylum
I never expected Elijah of all people to be the voice of Crane, but he did a great job
what i love about his portrayal of Scarecrow is that it gives the clear vocal evolution of his character.
That’s why he’s such a good villain.
He’s different from most others. They want Batman to lose. Scarecrow wants everyone to feel fear
He's my favorite villian
People think of Scarecrow as a psychological sadist, & he is. But modern versions of him are often depicted as starting out with a twisted desire to “help”. He thinks exposing people to their worst fears means they will eventually overcome them, & he sometimes just can’t understand why his victims aren’t grateful. I can see elements of that with this version. He’s so *frustrated* with Harley’s approach.
@@millaray9912 that’s the kicker innit? Irl bad people can’t or refuse to understand why people are not grateful for their “help”.

Finally, villains other than Joker getting the spotlight in an Arkham game.
Jason Todd, Scarecrow, Hugo Strange or Riddler to
@@quentinmrg6293I hear you BUT:
Joker stole the spotlight from Hugo Strange at the end of City.

Batman fighting his demon self is a boss type we should’ve gotten in SSKTJL. Something like that.

Ya im hoping they retcon harrd ss basicly a multiverse game anyway
The fight begins with you gliding across a void avoiding obstacles and I was thinking that it reminded me of the demon trial. Then I realised they actually remade the whole Ra's fight and it's glorious.
Seeing how Crane was responsible for the alter egos of so many of these people developing, it makes it so much more realistic that he'd be able to rally them all in Knight to work with him and makes him such a more dominating and terrifying villain as a whole

@@Kevykev2007 You might be right, now I wish the game was a bit clearer about it haha
Honestly, I think what they did with the story overall-and making that fit into the Arkham continuity-was a stroke of genius. I’m not quite sure why I like this, tbh it sort of seems like a fan-fiction, but it feels refreshing.
Seems like your wish was granted gp two face finally got the respect in the arkham verse he deserves
Man Ham Dow is gonna go crazy
Damn, they actually pulled an Arkham Knight... and they pulled it off, mostly because they followed 2 simple principles:
And they left in a whole bunch of subtle clues pointing towards Joe. I ate it up and got completely blindsided.
Theres a 10-year gap between origins and asylum, so of course they had leeway with whatever they wanted to tell in the lore
The most surprising thing I found out about the game: they actually confirmed the canonicity of Arkham Origins Blackgate
Previously, it was questionable whether the mobile game was canon or not. Now with Shadow, its pretty much confirmed with balckgate prisoners mentioning the events of Blackgate as well as the gel gun gadget
There is still the issue with Solomon Grundy appearing in Blackgate so they may have to eventually explain this "plothole"
It's not a plot-hole. Batman knows Grundy from before Arkham City, since he knows tearing out his heart won't kill him.
@@b.u.l.1734but in Origins Blackgate they speak like they have history still
So they’d have to explain that
Also how Batman beat Grundy was with electricity (which healed him in City)

Asylum is 7.5 years after Origins:
Origins is Christmas Eve of year two (stated in-game)
Knight is set on Halloween, ten years after Origins (stated in-game), thus making it year twelve
Knight is set nine months after Joker’s cremation (stated in-game), placing City in late December of year eleven or early January of year twelve.
And he gets some closure with the killer of his parents, because Joe does show regret and is content with being in prison for his actions
The story is mad cool but i truly didn’t like Batman unmasking in front of Harvey, Batman could EASILY find another way
Not really. He did the exact same thing to Tommy Elliot in Knight.
To me, I think Bruce didn’t mind if his long time friend Harvey knew he was Batman. This is before Harvey goes full on villain mode, I think Batman always wanted Harvey to know in a way and this was the perfect time to do it

It they ever make another Arkham game it definitely needs to pick up after this game to continue Batman's character growth towards how he is in Asylum. They have like 10 years there to work with so they have plenty of space for several games if they want.
As a Gilda Dent fan, the fact that Gilda is mentioned at all brings joy to my heart

What year is this for batman? 3, 4? Roger Craig Smith voice sounds so good here. Really sounds like a young Conroy, with his voice, of course. He is the successor to Conroy.

YES I think this is what they were going for, he can manifest a personality totally different from two face and have no idea as seen in that episode
@@tropiklethunder It wouldn't surprise me if they took inspiration/ that idea and incorporate in that game and what really surprised me is Elijah wood voicing and mo-caping Dr. Jonathan Crane (scarecrow)

I hope we get more vr arkham batmans games, or even better, get vr games for other heros like nightwing, or flash, etc.
What is up with the Arkham prequels having a character ark for Batman while in the Rocksteady trilogy, he barely have one?
Btw, it would be great if I could play the game… but that gosh darn VR exclusivity is so stupid
I feel like in the rocksteady trilogy he’s already established where as the prequels he’s still finding his footing as batman
Does have arcs but just stays stagnate(yes both are possible) but when it comes to Knight the arc isn't well thought out.
You forgot about nightwing
I feel like University of Gotham should be shut down for giving Harleen and/or Crane a degree.
its honestly creepy how nice and sane Harley sounds in the audio tapes
Can’t lie, I want The Ventriloquist and Scarface in a movie.
"Safer on the inside. -- what someone that rich is capable of." Joe knew. His nightmares told him that little boy's wrath grew up to be the Bat.
This is a great video, would love it if you made a similar one recapping the entire Arkham Shadow storyline from start to finish
Another thing to mention about Harvey Dent/Two-Face; a third personality is a call back to the animated series. On the show Harvey once created The Judge to try and kill Two-Face.
At the end of the game when Bruce showed harvey he was batman i was confused because harvey didn't find out till arkham knight so i knew harve had to lose his memories and the joe chill reveal was wild
So they gave Rat Catcher the Black Mask treatment. It wasnt them it was a more popular villIain the whole time. Lol
No, rat king and rat catcher aren’t the same characters. Rat Catcher still exists, but he was most likely inspired by rat king
The actual Rat Catcher is in the game. Rat King is Dent.
You clearly didn’t play the game and it shows
