Fascinating video. It’s amazing how much diversity there is across species. And I’m surprised that elephants can get by on so little sleep. I would have thought that with their enormous mass that much more restorative sleep would be required.

True! I didn’t think about that! I’ve also read that they can sleep standing, or at least leaning a bit against something, too!

I would think that most animals in the wild don't ever sleep soundly. I would think they are always at least a little bit on the alert. Given that, I would think that animals in captivity (and in homes) sleep more hours and more soundly because they are protected. Still, just two hours of sleep? I could never!

Haha! Yeah. Also, it’s true that animals need to be alert. I believe that some animals are poised and ready, or they are lightly sleeping and actually are aware of their surroundings, or they must sleep in a place where predators and such can’t get them. I wouldn’t want two hours of sleep a night though!

Why do animals need to sleep?

I assume because they need energy; I mean, you have to rest after a long day in the wild!

    How about rabbits?

The sites I’ve looked at say that rabbits need about eight to twelve hours a day on average (with naps they take throughout the day).
