The building looks great. The only thing I would change would be to remove the ballasting of the track and tile it in to make a cement shop floor instead. That would make it have a more mini-figure friendly walking area.
I think having them two buildings side by side was better to be honest and the the other line can have Maintenance aswell especially it being a cargo train
I like it open with the view inside . Don't see it too much as a closed shed. It is a workstation with a roof and a wall to shield the works from the sea air.
Absolutely LOVE it. I am a train guy and I think it is fantastic. Love the open side with the train running through. “OPEN” is the best, best, best. One caveat..........I would remove the stones from your ballasted tracks where it runs through the building. I suspect the crew would have swept the floor in that area and removed any rocks or debris. Very impressed Robin, great job.
So much more fun with the side open - seeing all the bits and the purpose of the shed. Looks more industrial. LEGO should be fun and realism gets to be suspended wherever we se fit. That’s what makes it ALL work. Great build. Has a caboose-like form that is appealing. If you’d like, just imagine that the wall is there the way we imagine all sorts of things in this pursuit, some of which you mentioned.
First Off, I think the build looks great! I don't think the open side looks bad being exposed because lots of these kinds of Industrial buildings can sometimes have huge doors that are opened and I like seeing that platform and tools BUT I think of it was flipped so that the workers are more on the side of the cargo docks it would look more fitting and the view with the windows facing the kids park.... Closing it all in seems sad.
I've seen many open-sided train shed MOCs but from a standpoint of realism, it is a good idea to have built the walled side facing the water as a wind break from the cold, wet winds coming in off the bay where they could blow away and erode tools and equipment. From a safety standpoint you could always add a chain link fence on the open side, but we all know how you feel about more fences ;) Overall a wonderful choice!
Yes, I've subsequently found one sided shed pictures online. In this case a fence would be acceptable although the park already has one. A double fence!
A wall under the monorail that integrates the worker platforms at the lower level would work too. It would solve the playground issue and leave part of it open to still see details inside. Also swap out technic on the open side :) awesome build also !!!!
I’m Back! And I’ve Got a suggestion! Well a couple, firstly a small one maybe add some paths from the door going over the tracks to reach the road to make it seem a bit less dangerous, maybe use grey and dark grey 1x1 flat squares and not flat squares? Also studs and flat studs for a gravel effect. Secondly maybe add a statue or memorial to remember the great crash of 21. Also I love the build and I think the open wall really makes it look better but maybe spin it round so the open sides facing the other line so they can do maintenance on the Beast/hammerhead/hulk/unnamed, unbuilt yellow loco. Maybe add a fence from the open end over the other line. Can’t wait for Brickhaul 80!
I would second Jaden’s comments. Really cool build but I would worry about the children from the playground having access to the open side and all of the dangerous equipment.
Robin, kudos to you for finding a way to build the Train Shed without paying the extortion prices they usually fetch! As you've inspired me, I'm going to source substitute parts like you have, to try and cobble together a shed like this. I'm a train fan, and as such, you guessed it, I cannot fathom putting a maintenance shed on a main line. You practically said the words just as I was thinking it! Might I offer a suggestion of an alternative location? If you go across the grey bridge, and you build another continuous-curve switch, you'd be able to put the train shed in the corner just down from your Fast Food Corner modular. When closed, the train shed takes up the footprint of a modular building. There's open space on that corner. I know this might interfere with your plans for a cargo yard, but perhaps there's a way to integrate both in that area. It would make more sense there than on the main line. You could have one short siding coming from the continuous curve switch leading into one half of the shed. The other half may not be able to physically connect, but you might use some individual grey rail pieces (from the 12v era) to cobble together track for that side. Perhaps those rails are under construction? You mentioned that you don't want a long siding, and I'd agree with that. But these sheds usually only service the odd car or locomotive. They aren't used primarily for train storage. You may not like the idea, but it's an alternative. I doubt "Health and Safety" would be too keen on a high speed passenger train plowing through that shed every 30ish seconds or so, while some poor maintenance worker is trying to use the lathe, drill press, or crane to get some critical task completed...
If this was a train focussed layout I would agree with you but the decision to limit the trains to the loop was to enable the biggest array of buildings. They are, for me, what makes a city. As a result I try to cram as many train features and wagons onto what train lines I have!
Open back looks great! The minifigures not being able to get to some of the work benches for fear of a passing train gets me laughing, you could consider it another one of the funny scenes.
Woo hoo This engine shed is awesome lego should release another one. I would say add a 4th wall because of the fact you can see the open part from the standing hole. And if you want to be able to see inside then add more windows on the 4th wall maybe so minifigs in the city can see the work going on inside. the docks side doesn't need as many windows as no one would really look in. But it's up to you and what you prefer. I love it either way.
To anyone who complains just say you took inspiration from the Bakerloo line just north of Queen's Park station where in-service trains on the main line pass through a carriage shed.
Hi Robin. I have been a fan for years. I love the open side as seeing the detail is IMHO the best part of any Lego feature. I know that you enjoy pleasing your fans but I am reminded of the phrase in the song, Garden Party - "You can't please everyone so you might as well please yourself." Here is the thing - you are an incredible builder with an interesting and fun city. Please, my friend - stop apologizing. It really doesn't become you. This is your city. I wish you peace in your marvelous pursuits. Thanks for sharing.
Keep it open Robin! I love the look inside. We’ve already established that realism is not the main goal and is sacrificed at time for other things of importance.
I love all the machinist tools, they are very well designed. I'm undecided on it being open or closed. I like to see the inside as there is loads to see, but also there aren't many other buildings in that area that are open. The GBC factory comes to mind as being open but that is on the other side of town.
I think it would look nice if you added a fifth arch and lattice window in the center of the building to fill that middle gap! Love it! You’ve inspired me to add a row of warehouse arched doors along my canal!!!
Wow! Your city looks fantastic! The view with the red façade looks wonderful, the yellow cranes really stand out. There is so much to see from that perspective. Open is cool! It's fun seeing the train wiz through. I like being able to see through the black supports. It almost suggests a glass wall. I know it would take many, many, many parts but.... What if you use trans panels to build a glass wall or use large white window frames. Then each of the four sections can have a large red archway.
Great build! I think the open back is ok, but perhaps add a floor and a low divide so there is a separation between the shed's interior and the grassed park area.
I vote leave it open! Would be a bit of a shame to have the train disappear in there, and lose all of the interior as well. Maybe add a low wall and tile the green baseplate in though...
I think the build overall looks great, but the exposed part kind of brings it down. I think the main reason is because of the exposed technic bricks, so maybe if you cover that part up and spruce up the support beams, it will make it look a little cleaner.
Whatever floats your boat! It is your city and it is a very cool lego city, so keep improving and expanding it! I personally don’t like exposed technic bricks, but I guess they would make good steel girders.
I think you should only partially cover the wall and leave cutouts in different sizes and shapes to expose the inner workings. That way the viewer knows that it's supposed to be a wall but you're not actually blocking anything.
Outstanding Brick Sloth. I totally agree. The process ought to be fun or why do it at all? Your city is yours, mine is mine, and Robin's should be his. Otherwise, the whole thing is pointless.
Although I try to keep my city reasonably realistic, I agree with you. LEGO is meant to be a fun hobby you can do whatever you want with, and I always find ways to keep my city interesting and fun to look at, because if we’re being honest, every city needs some creative flare
First love the open side.. now the long shot.... I think it would really look great beiing on the other track and the open wall beiing between the two track to be able to serve both trains.
A good new loco that you can build is the very old BNSF loco. These are very expensive but I'm sure you would be able to make it with all of your bricks. That would be a sight to see!
I would put it on the cargo line rail, i think it would fit the industrial theme of that train better. I would also flip it around so the open side is aimed at the harbor, that way the industrial inside is visible from the industrial harbor while the city side gets a semi generic side in the background.
The fact I actually got what today’s build was... Also, I think you should do a low wall so you can see the train going through, and giving security (of sorts) to the tools which would quite expensive in real life.
I think if you turn it around so the open side in toward the other track then you could say that it is also used for the other track as an outside work area. That way you can still see all the great stuff on the inside but keep a consistent look from the standing hole.
I think it looks ok as it is. As its a work shop some time they are open. If you put a side on only do it 1/2 the high and make the top 1/2 open at though its on a roller shutter door. Great video again.
I like the open side it could be like the whole side is made of glass to let in more light. It also allows viewers to make up stories about the workmen or so the children playing in the park can watch the men doing their jobs.
Shed Heaven. Great build, Robin. I like it a lot, but I wonder what a big glazed side to the structure would look like where the tools and platform are? Super entertainment. Cheers Robin 👍🏻😀
I am a train fan and you say that train sheds aren´t at the main line, thats right, but when you build bevore and after the train shed a double crossing switch, than you can drive past it on the other track and back to the own track
Even though you can see in from the children’s park, the monorail helps block some elements so you not able to see the whole inside and I think that's good because without the monorail, I think it would’ve looked a bit strange being able to see through a whole building by the children’s park. £20 a door?! Robin, you definitely made the right choice. £40 for 2 Lego pieces!!🤭 I really like this MOC based off of the 2003 set! You did a great job! Love it! Great video as always!!!!! 👍
I really love the open back view, but I'm sad that the building obscures your beautiful park from the main view point. Perhaps some side doors that slide open most of the time to allow the park to be seen or move it down towards the bridge a bit?
Instead of a full wall, you can frame the open side with the impression of a wall. That way, the side remains open but we viewers can imagine that it is supposed to be closed
Here is an idea, make a modern cover for the monorail tack that mimics the engine shed. It would have to be a lot taller, but the idea would be that the engine house had to be upgraded when the new trains were introduced. Like originally the engine shed was two lanes, (like the original set), but one was taken down and modernized for the monorail. Hope that makes sense, just wanted to offer an alternative.
I think the shed needs some sort of transition to the main city area, mabye a way for the train worker minifigures to get there, because the grimy train shed is sitting right next to a childrens playground. However, I think it should still be quite open and viewable.
I love the roofing design and the tools dentals, but maybe a control tower over the inside track rather than a maintenance shed that would not be on a main line, for all the reasons you gave. If planning on keeping it I vote on closing the building and adding some more structural dentals to the walls. The built wall seems a bit flat and missing detail compared to the GBC factory. Maybe black bordered windows rather than white?
Again, kudos for the excellent build. I agree with those that say wall up lower half and keep upper open or with windows. Also, maybe cover up some of the green baseplate on the bottom inside, I know its a shed, but still sort of distracting to see the floor same color as the ground outside...possibly a brown color to look like pallet wood used for flooring...
I really Like your Version of the Train Shed. Iam more of a immersive realistic Guy but i really Like the Long open Version as Well. I Vote for the Long open Version. Greetings from Germany
a very, very minor improvement you could make to the drill press would be to either use a technic pin with a stud cap and a flat stud to put into the modified green plate as a base under the drill bit. or in lieu of both parts you could take a stud and flip it over to cover the hole, maybe a black one to match the wheel. I actually had this set and I really loved it, probably still have the parts somewhere. Other than that if you want to look around or fiddle a MOC together, you should consider having a belt sander and a band saw. As for the open back, could you perhaps do some dark glass panes and half arches for presentation's sake?
I really love this build! I like the open back, I'm fine with it. With the train track it isn't as bad, but it'd be really nice if the entire thing was on a grey baseplate! I also actually think it would look better especially from the main viewing angle if you could move it down by 2 or 3 studs? But again, brilliant classic build and I'm OK with the open back!
It looks great !! If you decide to set the two parts of the building in a row, you may save one pillar at mid-distance. It would lighten the whole thing. You may also darken the floor with black or grey plates. Maybe with one or two flower stalks. Personnaly I vote for a fence or a wire mesh at the first floor.
I would add a wall with a lot of windows, as if half of the building was demolished for the monorail line construction, and a big wall with a lot of big windows was added, to look like the front of the LEGO or tv shop above the subway.
I like the interior details very much! Might I suggest a removable wall with lots of adverts and grafitti? I saw lots of wall arts in Spain train stations and they added a lot of color and life to the city. It would ne a great view for minifigs riding the tram and trains especially when you use a train cam. And it won’t cost as much since you can just use 1x6x5 panels and put stickers on them. It can be independent from the station so you can remove it even ewithout moving the ststion itself. stay safe everyone.
U should also make an old box car or steam engine they’re scrapping on the side of the tracks near the shed, and what if u make the 90’s rail road cherry picker truck near the shed
You should build another one on the cargo line and join it to the passenger line and then you won’t see the other side when you’re in the standing hole
It’s videos like this that fill me with regret that I never got the opportunity to buy sets like the original engine shed when I was younger. Either due to not having money back then or going through my dark age. It does make me wonder one thing though, and that is, what should I purchase now to insulate myself in future? You point out the various doors on that set and the yellow barrow, for instance. Every time I purchase from Pick-a-Brick I always end up spending more than I intended either buying more of something “just in case” or buying a couple of an item that I don’t need, but might in the future, and don’t want to miss out on not getting some. The regret though, that’s real, and I definitely remember ogling that original engine shed back in the day but not being able to afford it. Your modifications look great. It’s made a very nice addition and I’m in the camp of not caring that the back is not enclosed!
Part of me still thinks this should really be on a siding going behind the Space Tower, but this looks really good - like the different views of the train coming through!
Totally agree!, make another exit switch like the one with the track maintenance near the airport. And have the first quarter with the low roof closed in so it won’t be open from the main viewing angle or any standing hole. This would also incorporate it in the cargo yard and look awesome!
It would look better on a siding... but at the end of the day, it's your layout; as long as you're enjoying it :) Open side: I like the open side. I designed mybown train shed, and used as many of those 5x6 clear panels so you could see all the workers. If the open side truly bothers you, maybe make a wall that clips into the technic modular building sockets? For my 2c worth, I'd leave it open. Great building, great build, and lovely attention to detail :)
Why not move it to the outer track an use the open side as an access from the harbour area (for example for the workers to get in)? Would make more sense to me to put it in this more industrial context as towards the doxtown area.
That's an iconic building, really nice! I believe the building would look much nicer when it has two walls, though then you sacrifice the view on all the supernice equipment. I think there is "right", but always a compromis; I saw a remark on a halfway wall, I think that's the way to go to seperate it better from the playground which to my believe is the most striking mismatch to get fixed (a partially open wall of a train shed is not even fully unrealistic) I actually have one other concern: the view on the cranes in the harbour got blocked. I'm curious how that will look during the full city tour.
I'm of the opinion that the lower part of the wall should exist maybe 2 or 3 bricks high and then windowed to allow the trains to be seen. Rather like a green house. That way everyone can get a compromise. Closed off building but visually effective. You don't even need to buy glass panels just the frames. The illusion is enough. Plus you could replicate any arches.
Wow absolutely amazing Robin Great job! I've always wanted the train shed set. I remember seeing it in the LEGO store and kick myself for never buying it. I really like all the cool machinery and tool builds that are in your build. I think it looks great how you have it placed into the city. I feel if you built the other wall you wouldn't be able to see the train go through as well or all the amazing detail that you've put inside it. I was wondering though if you designed this in LDD and would be willing to share it for the patrons of the channel? Fantastic job and great video my friend.
It looks awesome! Maybe you could change the color scheme to dark red with some light and dark gray brick pieces if you have those pieces. Also you could have the Lego Harry Potter Hogwarts Express from 2018 nearby or maybe it could be the worker's main train? What do you think about these ideas Robin? Thanks for a new build!
Hi Robin I noticed you had a little bit of space In between the airport and the cattle grid and I was thinking maybe 4 privet drive could fit there but I also worry it may look out of place. What are your thoughts on this? Obviously you don't have to do this after all this is just a suggestion. Keep up the good work
Personally considering the size of your 2 train loops I would consider the loops a siding to the greater train line that branches off into the rest of the world beyond the wall.
The building looks great. The only thing I would change would be to remove the ballasting of the track and tile it in to make a cement shop floor instead. That would make it have a more mini-figure friendly walking area.
Yes, I think I'll do that!
I think having them two buildings side by side was better to be honest and the the other line can have Maintenance aswell especially it being a cargo train
Same
I like that too but it won't fit in my setup!
Oh ok
I really like the open side of the building. The track inside the shed should be made up of tiles, simulating concrete.
I’m thinking the same thing!!
I'm on it, thanks!
I'd keep it open, but maybe add a chainlink fence , same as on the harbour side, if it fits between the monorail and the shed?
I like it open with the view inside . Don't see it too much as a closed shed. It is a workstation with a roof and a wall to shield the works from the sea air.
Good reasoning!
I like the open face, Robin because you can see the trains going through it. And you can see the interior details better too.
Yes, I was thinking closed but now I'm leaning more to open!
I agree about the ballast!
Yes, the green floor needs changing!
I’m not sure about the open side, but I just really want to see the train push open the doors on the side it comes out of
Bash!
@Rozanne Corcoran at least try to make this ad sound realistic
Absolutely LOVE it.
I am a train guy and I think it is fantastic.
Love the open side with the train running through.
“OPEN” is the best, best, best,❤️
Thank you very much!

I think the open back works really nicely. Gives a good view and it's not too garish, especially with the tramline covering it
Totally agree. The tram kinda makes it less obvious!

Cool ! The kids from the playground can play with dangerous tools 🤔😉
Yay!

I like the open wall, but maybe you can add some red bricks to make it look more like an intentional cutaway, kind of like the ninja turtles lair
Leave it open. Looks great.
I think it looks great. I would keep it open back, so you could see the workers and the train
I think it would look nice if you added a fifth arch and lattice window in the center of the building to fill that middle gap!
Love it! You’ve inspired me to add a row of warehouse arched doors along my canal!!!
I considered a fifth arch and thought, naaah. But maybe one day. I don't have the parts now anyway you see!

Great build! I think the open back is ok, but perhaps add a floor and a low divide so there is a separation between the shed's interior and the grassed park area.
That's the plan now I think. Thanks!
Removable wall I reckon, so u are able to have both options
I think if you add some line switches before and after the shed, it won’t disturb any train enthusiasts as it looks a lot like a side track
Something you could do is have switches on the main, so trains can go around the shed if one is in it. just a thought.
I vote leave it open! Would be a bit of a shame to have the train disappear in there, and lose all of the interior as well. Maybe add a low wall and tile the green baseplate in though...
Yes to tiling the floor!

I have no time for experts complaining about a lack of realism in a Lego city. It's Lego, it doesn't have to be real.

I agree! However that'd require major reconstruction of the wall surrounding the Harbour area :(
@@richy77 yeah but on the bright side more video for us to enjoy!!!
@@matthieujuneau5518 Yay!!!
There is no space for this. The track is right on the edge of the final baseplate!
It might be worth it to close it in at some point, but as a lower priority. It looks really great as is 👍🏻

I would also flip it around so the open side is aimed at the harbor, that way the industrial inside is visible from the industrial harbor while the city side gets a semi generic side in the background.
Sadly it won't fit on that line as the track is right up to the very edge there!
The fact I actually got what today’s build was...
Also, I think you should do a low wall so you can see the train going through, and giving security (of sorts) to the tools which would quite expensive in real life.
I agree, a low wall would do the job most probably. Though, it might ruin the view on all the supernice equipment.
@@Erikve unless it was more of a fence and you could see through it
I think if you turn it around so the open side in toward the other track then you could say that it is also used for the other track as an outside work area. That way you can still see all the great stuff on the inside but keep a consistent look from the standing hole.
I think it looks ok as it is. As its a work shop some time they are open. If you put a side on only do it 1/2 the high and make the top 1/2 open at though its on a roller shutter door.
Great video again.
Great point!
I can see both points, but I personally don't mind it having an open back.
Open! It's a LEGO city after all. Those workshop tools are magnificent. I will have to build some of those, although not in the expensive green!
That’s a really nice version of that old set you made here. And I kinda like the open side of it, as it reminds me of certain wear-houses I’ve seen.
You need to set the jaws of the vice over a stud so the handle "could" spin. Looks great.
Will do!
I am a train fan and you say that train sheds aren´t at the main line, thats right, but when you build bevore and after the train shed a double crossing switch, than you can drive past it on the other track and back to the own track
Great build Robin, I like the open face as you can see inside the workshop.
£40 for 2 Lego pieces!!🤭
I really like this MOC based off of the 2003 set! You did a great job! Love it!
Great video as always!!!!! 👍
There is a fence around the park too. Thanks very much!
I wouldn't have done an open wall, but it seems like you want it and it does fit your design policy, so I think you should consider keeping it as is.
Hi robin Osian here. In my opinion I think you should give the workshop(?) a back wall as is would make it look complete.
Wow that is a novel idea. Loads of glass required!
Yes, the green floor needs attention. I hadn't thought of that!
It looks so nice open! Keep it! My city's main viewing angle is all open but I do plan to have something like this. I vote Open!
One of Top 5 sets i regret the most not having, :-( Another great project of yours. Fantastic layout you keep building in!
Awesome the way it is, open. Love it.
I have actually been waiting for this for a long time, also u should take a fence down, and make a crossing from the port to the shed
I really Like your Version of the Train Shed. Iam more of a immersive realistic Guy but i really Like the Long open Version as Well. I Vote for the Long open Version. Greetings from Germany
Cool, thanks!
a very, very minor improvement you could make to the drill press would be to either use a technic pin with a stud cap and a flat stud to put into the modified green plate as a base under the drill bit. or in lieu of both parts you could take a stud and flip it over to cover the hole, maybe a black one to match the wheel. I actually had this set and I really loved it, probably still have the parts somewhere. Other than that if you want to look around or fiddle a MOC together, you should consider having a belt sander and a band saw. As for the open back, could you perhaps do some dark glass panes and half arches for presentation's sake?
I've since found some photos of one-sided sheds!
I will fix the green floor!
My opinion is side by side on the two tracks. As always I love our city. Abraço de Portugal!
Then you still have an open wall on the back. Anyway it won't fit in my setup that way around!
Yes, I need to add a floor!
I did not expect those doors to be that expensive. I've got 4 of them in brown from the original 1990 sets.
Hello from Chicago Robin!! Building looks great and I think you should close it or at least have removable walls!
That's cool the cherry picker!
😊 I think you should turn it around, so that the open side is towards the freight-train and the door or have it crossing both tracks 😊
Power was out all day wifi is back this was the first video I watched lol!
Here and Houston we are having rolling blackouts it's bad over here
Good choice!
You should build another one on the cargo line and join it to the passenger line and then you won’t see the other side when you’re in the standing hole
ANOTHER one? My poor wallet!
Oh sorry
We all have that pain, haha!
Part of me still thinks this should really be on a siding going behind the Space Tower, but this looks really good - like the different views of the train coming through!
That’s true, over by the mine, and the train can bring supplies to and from the mine!
Totally agree!, make another exit switch like the one with the track maintenance near the airport. And have the first quarter with the low roof closed in so it won’t be open from the main viewing angle or any standing hole. This would also incorporate it in the cargo yard and look awesome!
I think you should wall it in
Hey again. Nice build looks great. I had to fast forward cause im busy but i will watch the whole video later. But i like it open on 1 side
Yes another upload can't wait to watch
It would look better on a siding... but at the end of the day, it's your layout; as long as you're enjoying it :)
Open side: I like the open side.
Thank you. I like it open too now I see it!
Why not move it to the outer track an use the open side as an access from the harbour area (for example for the workers to get in)? Would make more sense to me to put it in this more industrial context as towards the doxtown area.
There isn't enough space on that side, sadly. The second line is right upto the edge!
That's an iconic building, really nice! I believe the building would look much nicer when it has two walls, though then you sacrifice the view on all the supernice equipment. I think there is "right", but always a compromis; I saw a remark on a halfway wall, I think that's the way to go to seperate it better from the playground which to my believe is the most striking mismatch to get fixed (a partially open wall of a train shed is not even fully unrealistic)
I actually have one other concern: the view on the cranes in the harbour got blocked. I'm curious how that will look during the full city tour.
Full city tour will be a week on Friday!
I think that the building being open could be cool. It makes the building more open for working in that space. I think leave it open
I love it!
I like the open side, it is a Lego city afterall, so seeing the inside with all the detail is better than having all sides closed to me.
I don't have either I'm afraid, haha!
@@RobinHoodBricks That's ok! It looks great as it is!
Wow really cool upgrade and im now inspired to make more train Mocs!
If you are going to cover the open side, put in lots of windows!
Hi Robin I noticed you had a little bit of space In between the airport and the cattle grid and I was thinking maybe 4 privet drive could fit there but I also worry it may look out of place. What are your thoughts on this? Obviously you don't have to do this after all this is just a suggestion. Keep up the good work
I have a hotel earmarked for there!
@@RobinHoodBricks that sounds way better then privet drive.
Nice to see more train related stuff can’t wait to see what the new ride is
Personally considering the size of your 2 train loops I would consider the loops a siding to the greater train line that branches off into the rest of the world beyond the wall.
Yes, exactly. Any loop isn't exactly realistic technically!
Really cool!
