Can't use the factory exhaust in full open... at a track day.... at a track next to an airport. I'm sad for you. Thanks for the on-track review. Keep it up, please.
Comparison is between Volkswagen and JCW of course JCW is better than regular a baby knows that how the cars compare how they handle over- under steer how do you feel in each car which car has lower seating position which car puts bigger smile Stay on topic
@@andry041 not strictly correct there. I think the gp2 is a far more capable car in terms of lap times for a few reasons. Reason 1 is weight, I believe the gp2 is around 80kg lighter then the f56 jcw. Reason 2 is brakes, the brakes on the gp2 are far better then on the f56 jcw. The front discs are the same size for both cars but the discs on the rears a fair bit bigger on the gp2, The calipers on the gp2 are also a lot bigger with 6 piston fronts compared to the 4 piston fronts on the f56 jcw. And when you take into account the weight aswell that means a lot more braking capability in the gp2. Reason 3 the gp2 has a stiffer chassis then the f56.
Fantastic video. Been reading PH since 2004 and when video started coming in I was a bit hesitant but I have to say they have all been great. This one particularly so, I really gained an impression on the feel of the cars which a lot of reviews fail to convey, so hat's off to you.
Jeez is it always raining in the UK? It's like every time I find what could be the ultimate head to head track comparison test, it pours rain and they can't really test them right. Good vid nontheless.
2 seater hot hatch? isn't the hold point of a hot hatch, practicality and speed if you take away the practicality just get yourself a 2 seater like a 370z or Boxster ? PS good video keep them coming
Hellloooo Ian Panther. You can have a thumbs up! Although, I feel you should point out that you have massive hands and the cars don't have tiny steering wheels...
Mini JCW any day Pure character and fun VW sole less no character and boring The guy driving had no clue about the mini - most of the info about the mini was wrong - really bad test / review Maybe PS should hire / employ someone with more knowledge and skills Also a bit unfair the VW had 90 bhp more - maybe a mini GP would have been more fair. What ever - I take the JCW
40,000€ for a Golf with no backseat which is just as fast as a 13 year old Bmw M3 around the ring? No thanks. Nice video, I enjoy the POV-style scenes.
Well usually something new as fast would be much more expensive still. Luckily there is freedom of choice. You know you can get one with a back seat if you want something new...
onehorsepower You're right but why would they give it stuff like 4 exhaust pipes, stripped out interior, etc. if it's not competitive with actual performance oriented RWD/4WD cars. That's my point. It makes no sense.
ye ye what do you mean by not competitive? The 'official' lap time with a stock M3 E46 is more than 30s slower (8:22 vs 7:49). For its price it is fast. Second hand cars and some money spent on modifications you can go faster for a lot less, but running costs will be higher also and it won't live another 13 years if used on track. Can't really compare. But the Golf is definitely not slow...
onehorsepower It's competitive against FWD cars like Minis but if FWD cars with slight power upgrades and interior downgrades cost 40,000€ then they have to compete with actual fast cars both RWD and 4WD.... Was talking about the CSL laptime but it really can't be compared to that. Just saying this thing will barely (if at all) be able to keep up with M3s on the ring (be it CSLs or slightly modded ones) which is pretty disappointing for a car with stripped out interior, 4 exhaust pipes, a clubsport name and a big price tag. Pretty sure you can get a decent Camaro for that price, and this 4cyl is certainly not going to be my choice since the price of this car is on pair with V8 cars or fairly recent used cars (f.e. some which are actually performance oriented and can do more than barely keep up with a 13 year old Bmw while keeping a full interior....) the new Golfs just disgust me especially because the MK2 GTI is a legendary car and the opposite of this, it was a sleeper with a solid engine able to push tons of horsepower, this one has bigger exhaust pipes than the Bmw M3 and appears to be "performance oriented" but if you think keeping up with a 13 year old stock BMW for 40,000€ is actually competitive in 2016 then I can't help you.
ye ye I keep replying you because don't seem to realise how quick this "fwd 4cyl" car is. A Camaro will be way back on our reference track, the ring, because it is waaaay too heavy. I agree the exhaust pipes look a bit silly on the Golf. Sister car of this Golf, the Leon Cupra, is very close to older M3's if you compare stock to stock or track prepared to track prepared, just search for them on youtube. If you want practicality with rear seat, two normal exhausts and lots of boot space, the sister car Seat Leon Cupra Estate is still under 8 minutes, for under 35k€ new. There is nothing rwd or 4wd with that practicality that will live with it for less money, even second hand. Perhaps a C63 or RS6 would be as fast or a bit faster on the same tyres but they will have a lot more hp and cost several times more. The list of more expensive rwd and 4wd cars, two seater for that matter, that are slower on the ring than this little FWD golf is long, so no need to put it down for its speed. If you prefer rwd, then get one. But reality is, if you want a new rwd car that is noticeably faster on track with similar usability, you will have to spend a lot more money. For you money, a second hand car will always give you more speed, but as said, can't be compared really, for a given old M3, you could find an even cheaper fwd that will live with it also like for like (stock or track prepared), mostly called Renault Megane RS, which is by far the cheapest way to go fast ;) I have both fwd and rwd cars, and people always underestimate the fwd one...
Nice and fair review but I'll just keep on filling my VXR8 tank thanks. Old bloke, old school, old soundtrack - V8. Okay, mine ain't ever gonna be a track car but how often will I bump into ya on the track (or in a tunnel?) lol. HSV 'n' LS-3 all the way. I like being a dinosaur... ...but it'll always fly a PH sticker.
In their normal versions, both cars are a mess and dull to drive. The Challenge is much sportier than an regular S1, but it's a special edition so the comparison wouldn't be fair.
Vw is the one of the worst car brands in the world I would rather drive a Toyota. Vw is way way way overpriced for wat u get. It looks boring and u pay bmw prices for maintenance. Vw drivers are a joke
Toyota? You mean you prefer the brand with 50 shades of beige? The brand that sells the Prius? The brand that only installs 195hp into the one half decent car they produce? Hmmm! You're not really a car person are you?
rain2586 it's just a car that's all just a car VW is still fixing their ideas you don't let your own word to say that it's the worst if VW is the worst how about a car s rusty oh, it's the worst because if VW Diesel gate exits on us only for cheating at my point German are always have to fix there own ideas..
rain2586 hahah Toyota? Camrys are a ripoff, such a basic car for basic people. A Golf clubsport like this is a bargain, look at all the quality brands within the VW group that get to share the trickle down technology - Bugatti, lambo, Porsche, Audi
@James Stewart You need to get some glasses the golf is obviously superior in looks and performance. And fyi every girl would choose the mini and they do, because it's small and cute.

Clubsport S obviously, better in every way.
even though i love jcw's, should have had GP2 go up against it
if u choose the track GTI...you should be comparing it against the MINI GP2 and not the JCW.
gp2(218hp) and f56(231hp) have identical performance

@@Cornwall1888 they're great but a proper 2 seater is greater. There's no point in a 4/5 seater with 2 seats

Nice content, i hope you will get more subscribers.
nice review. Excluding the Golf (as you can no longer buy one). I would choose the old Mini GP2 over that new Mini Challenge.
What a superb review - lots of good in-car footage, and nicely detailed commentary.
No matter how fast and good it is, the golf is just a boring car to look at....
Just found this review. I’m the owner of this exact car #01. Love it 😁
wouldnt say the mini stearing is bad, its a question of taste, its VERY heavy compared to all other cars but I personaly love a heavy streering
The mini only has 236hp vs. Golf's 310hp? The 2020 mini jcw has 305hp. That'll be the comparison to watch.
mrgelvis that’s the GP
The wheel is not too big.
