How I draw people - Sketching figures from a reference

In this video I’ll be sharing with you some tips on how I sketch people from a reference photo. I’m using a Kuretake black ink brush pen but these tips can be applied to any drawing tools.

I really like your sketching procedure. I’m often following the same principles by sketching in ink directly. It feels more painterly and expressive to me which gives some interest to the drawings.

Thanks mate, yes sketching directly is more expressive. Lately I'm trying to work out how to add some construction without losing the dynamic feel so it's easier to draw what I imagine.

I like doing construction lines in light blue pencil then ink. The color separation is really helpful I think. Super sick drawing also✌️

Most art tutorials: start by making a circle with a pencil then ink in the lines.
This one: start by inking the subject then get that pencil out for some shading.
Not at a a critique, this is amazing, I just find it funny that it’s the exact opposite of how we are taught XD

Thanks Glenn, it took a lot of practice sketching from reference photos but I love feel of sketching quickly without construction first. I tried to memorise the proportions and then use little reference lines as I sketch to find the same construction points. My latest video explains how I sketch the face with using features like the brow, bottom of nose and chin. Hope that helps a little ✌🏼
