Just wanted to say thank you matthew, i started learnind electro swing trough your tutorials and Last week we had an online talent show cause of the pandemic and i won with my Video dancing to ,,no swiggity"
Just started my one year journey today. I learn 3 things. 1) My cardio is trash, need to be in much better shape. 2) I have absolutely no rhythm. 3) I spent today learning the running man for 45 minutes... Going to take a few more days to figure it out. Thanks for the videos, I learned a lot.
That is great to hear that you started on this. In the beginning it can always seem quite hard. This type of fast-paced dance is a good cardio exercise, so the more you do, the better your cardio will become. For the rhythm, I'd recommend to start with slower-paced songs so that you can keep up. Faster-paced songs can be confusing to follow (I still get confused by some of them). I did a tutorial video on Running Man a long while ago. Maybe it can help give you some tips. :)
I'm crazy about Matt. He's really inspired me to push forward and make new progress. I think it's common in dance (and really all forms of creative expression) to feel like you have plateaued once you have reached a certain level, but this has given me fresh steam to press on and continue to improve. Thank you for your channel and all your hard work. Electro swing is very special to me, and your content is a wonderful tribute to what makes this fresh take on a classic style so awesome. Dance safe!! :)
Thank you for the kind words! Much appreciated! I know what you mean. I also feel like that I've plateaued as of late, so really need to learn some new moves. A lot of time getting some inspiration from other creative folk can help in making progress. I think that's one of the great things about creative expression. One such expression can inspire another in someone else. :)

Took me a whole week just to learn the v step. I think it’s the hardest step to learn. If I can do in a month what you have done in a week I’ll be happy. Thanks for your great tutorial 😊
You are welcome! V-step is a good early move to learn because it introduces us to the idea of mind over body. Once you get a hang of it, you gain some momentum to help you with the other moves. It also forms as a basis for many other moves.
This should have more views damn!! you inspired me to dance electro swing I'm in my 3 week dancing I hope I become an awesome dancer like you! I will keep practicing and be a cool dancer like you so wish me luck :D
Thank you very much, and wow, best of luck with learning! It's really rewarding to see yourself improve. Just keep at it. The more you practice, the more natural the movements become for you. :D
Ok, this is awesome. After our last conversation, it's cool to see more of your range and development, and to see you indoors too. (I know this video already existed, I just hadn't seen it until now.) You learned fast, and it does look like you've got experience with other sports/physical exertion, maybe even martial arts? You've got the archetypical brawler's build which can make even smooth and fluid movements seem more heavy/impactful, but you've got great knee/elbow articulation. Your choice of wardrobe is already amazing, mixing form fitting and relaxed cut is a great idea for you. For hand and ankle speed/flow weights and underwater drills are great. In my high school, way back in the 90s swing/ska revival, there was actually a pretty sizeable martial arts/dancer overlap so you saw guys with the training weights doing katas and tai chi, and then having great control and flare on the dance floor later on. Ballsy as hell showing your whole process from the beginning and way to kick ass and keep at it.
Thank you very much for the feedback and positive comments. I didn't realise my martial arts background was so obvious. You are spot on about that. I did krav maga for 5 years, and I also have some experience with karate during childhood. Martial arts are really amazing for the overall fitness, I agree. That's a great idea about using hand and ankle weights for practice. I've been considering to try that recently, so might have a go at it. And yes, I find that these kind of progress videos are good for inspiration, both for other people to see and get inspired, but also for myself to see how far I've come and to keep going. :)

Thank you. How come you've been on the week 1 level for 2 years? Did you not get much chance to practice perhaps? Glad this video could inspire you to make progress. :)
Thanks! I learnt it from various tutorial videos here on RUclips, and watching other electro swing and shuffle dancers. If you start with the basic moves and practice them every day (or regularly in general), starting from slow speed and then going faster once you become more comfortable, then you'll make progress faster than you can imagine. The moves I'd recommend to start with would be: V-step, T-step, Running Man, and Mr X. Once you get a hang of them, you'll be able to apply them as the bases of more complex moves and combinations. Charleston Step is also recommended to learn, though I'd advise to learn it after you get a hang of those other ones, since it's a bit more complex and tiring on the feet.
Hi. I'd say V step and Running Man are both good starting moves. There's no reason to prioritise one over the other. They're both good beginner moves and both form a basis of many others to come later. T step is another good starting one. I generally tell people that V step, T step, and Running Man are the best moves to start with. Nail those 3 and you can have an easier time with the others. :)
Truly inspirational. I am a true beginner and have no where to go but up. I look at this as something I would like to achieve, even starting late in life. Any recommendations on how to get rolling?
That is awesome. I'd say the best way to start is to keep practising every day, or as often as possible. The moves I'd recommend to start with would be things like V-step, T-step, and Running Man. :)
Yeah, that's often a problem. There needs to be sufficient space, and also for the floor to not be too irregular (which makes many of the outside areas unsuitable). Do you have some places close to home where you could get some privacy to practice? Like some corner of a park or a quiet place like that.
@@MatthewAshworth Unfortunately no the only dancing space I have is 3x2 ft space and it's enough for the basic of electro swing. P.S My friends saw me dancing to the Lone Digger song, and they wanted to dance with me but they didn't know how. So, aside from trying to learn how to dance. I'm teaching the electro swing. Which is kinda hard to do.
@@jesseguajardo8592 Yeah, it's not ideal when there's too little space. But you could always just practice simpler moves that would allow you to use smaller space for the time being. Well, looks like your dancing has been a hit among your friends. :)
Hello, very nice video, helpful and impressive (in only one year your skill is good !!!). I wanted to try to dance electro swing but there's no dance lessons on my city, do you know with which videos or website could I learn this amazing dance and improve myself ? I really want to do this, and I hope you'll answer me. Have a good day!
Hi. Thank you for the comment. Yeah, it won't be easy to find actual classes for electro swing. I never found them in my area either. So, regarding tutorial videos, there are several here on RUclips for different moves. I made some as well, so feel free to check them. You'll see the names of the moves in the tutorials I made too, so it will help you to get familiar with what all these moves are called.
Welp, quarantine has got me down, might as well pick up electro swing dancing! I’m going to look up some tutorials and hopefully get as good as you! Also, nice improvement, really inspiring stuff.
I like the "Progress Timeline - 1 Year!" ! It encourages me to buy a small camera and do regular video on progress on... ukulele :) (and song writing) !!
Looks really good. Though you need to work a little on your mid section - it is too stiff - which results in the bottom and to not being connected in the movements. But nice to see an electro swing dancer, who looks up instead of down into the feet.
Thank you. Yeah, I've not done quite as much work on some of the mid and upper body parts. Are there any moves you'd recommend to get the mid section participate more in the dancing?
@@MatthewAshworth It might sound silly, but belly dancing. Seriously. To get the feeling of the mid section. Dancing is much about controlling each muscle and muscle group as well as relaxing the body and going with the flow - or to feel the rhythm in each fiber of your body. To start with it feels odd. But it becomes second nature when you practice. If you look at some of the best male dancers, they have a very large range of motion of their hips and torso. It might also have something to do with flexibility. The more flexible, the easier it is to get the feel og the mid section. So if you are not very flexible, then you might want to do some stretching exercises. You have to put your mindset on being the music with the entire body instead of focussing on your legs or your arms. It all sort of have to become one. It is very much a mind/body thing as opposed to a mind/technique thing. But have a look at this video - it gives some good excercises for the midsection: ruclips.net/video/6ur6ge5fvk0/видео.html
@@MatthewAshworth Here is a very good example of what I am talking about. I know it is modern dance. But the principles apply to almost all dancing. Notice how the movements from the hips are transferred all through the torso and up to the shoulders and out to the arms - because he is using his midsection. That way the movements of the arms do not look like something that has been put on to the body. The movements look like an extension of the other movements of the body. ruclips.net/video/XM2WaZ2LMvU/видео.html
@@MatthewAshworth I've found a really good one for you. Look at these guys and their moves. This is where electric swing dance comes from. It is pure joy of the dance. ruclips.net/video/gisafTmbVd8/видео.html

I love your tutorials! I'm in my first week, it's tough ... I get tired easily but it's so much fun!!! This progress video gives me inspiration too :D Thank you!!!
Thanks and you are welcome. I am glad it's helping to inspire you. Yes, it's quite normal to get tired easily and to have muscle aches in the first few weeks. Eventually you'll get used to the movements and it will feel easier. Best of luck with continuing the progress. :)
This little compilation of yours is wonderful, I mean your moves are awesome, so it's nice to see that they were once... less so. Not only does it take courage to show imperfection, but you show people like me whose moves are much... less so that we may also be able to achieve awesome moves some day. One question though, how often and how much did you practice? And how did you learn the moves?
Thank you. I was hoping for exactly that - for this compilation to inspire people to learn as well. :) I learnt how to do most of the moves from tutorials here on RUclips, and the rest is practice and occasional experimentation and trying to put the different moves together to make them flow. In the first few months I practised loads, it was at least 1-1.5 hours each day. After that it wasn't quite everyday, but I still tried to do them on a regular basis.
@@zenithchan1646 Ahah, good question. In those early days it was mostly by watching other electro swing dancers that inspired me. Dancers like TakeSomeCrime, JustSomeMotion, Neiland, etc.
@@zamasuisbae874 Yeah. Usually I recommend to everyone who asks about this to start with learning V-step, T-step, Running Man, and Mr X. They kind of form the basis of many other moves later on. So it's good to get a hang of these basic moves and then to build up on it from there.
Very very nice :) I would love to learn this too. How did you practice? Which steps and movements did you learn in the beginning and how did you progress them?
At first I learned the basics that make up the bulk of this style, moves such as V-step, T-step, Running Man. I'd say those are good ones to start with. Then try Sponge Bob, Reverse Sponge Bob, and of course the Charleston Shuffle Step (this one is also very important, but it's a bit harder to grasp at first and could cause foot pain in the early days). The more moves you learn, the more you can then experiment with them and try out new combinations. :)
OUTSTANDING!!! You nailed it and made these moves look effortless. You are gifted and on an ordinary quiet night at a club you start dancing and then everyone sitting around cant resist joining you on the dancefloor. Your moves are ALLURING and SEDUCTIVE, now you have packed the dancefloor and the club is pumpin!! Every time I watch It makes me go out and dance like nobody is watching :-) Canada
Thanks. Yeah. I'd recommend to start with the base moves such as V-step, T-step, and Running Man and to get comfortable doing them. Once you are confident with them, start branching out to other moves. Many of them will have some relation to these and will be similar in some ways. Be sure to practice regularly, preferably every day. Start slow to get the moves into your muscle memory, and then gradually speed up. And most importantly - don't give up even when it seems tough. :)
Any tips on learning arm movements that compliment Electro Swing? I've seen countless vids of this genre but I've never come across one that emphasized how to do the arm movements. I'm a true beginner to dancing (Electro Swing made me want to dance). A guide would be immensely useful for a newbie like me. Also: great song choices for the progression points
Thanks. Yes, there are not many tutorials online on arm movements. I had someone ask the same a few days ago, so I'll make a few arm move videos in the future. One that comes to mind at the moment that might be worth checking out is SwingAllNight's tutorial 2. He covers some arm movements in that one.
@@MatthewAshworth Thank you very much for taking the time to reply! I'll be adding your recommendation to my tutorial playlist. More power to you man. Thanks for contributing to this amazing music genre. 👍

Great job with the moves and sticking with it. Love the video song mix as well.
Something about the black hat and the white socks. Lookin' good!
Thanks. :D
It's hard for me to find a place to practice how to dance but I try to learn here and there.
Yeah, that's often a problem. There needs to be sufficient space, and also for the floor to not be too irregular (which makes many of the outside areas unsuitable). Do you have some places close to home where you could get some privacy to practice? Like some corner of a park or a quiet place like that.
@@MatthewAshworth
Unfortunately no the only dancing space I have is 3x2 ft space and it's enough for the basic of electro swing.
P.S
My friends saw me dancing to the Lone Digger song, and they wanted to dance with me but they didn't know how.
@@MatthewAshworth
Yup, and they are having a lot fun the Electro swing especially considering were planning to dance at the comic con.
@@jesseguajardo8592 Awesome! Sounds like a fun idea. Best of luck in that.
Nice motivation man, a good recommendation from RUclips.
You are most welcome! Thank you for watching!
Welp, quarantine has got me down, might as well pick up electro swing dancing! I’m going to look up some tutorials and hopefully get as good as you! Also, nice improvement, really inspiring stuff.
Thank you for the kind words. And indeed, quarantine is a good time to learn something new, such as some electro swing dance moves. :)
Oh men this is so cool!
Thanks :)
I like the "Progress Timeline - 1 Year!" ! It encourages me to buy a small camera and do regular video on progress on... ukulele :) (and song writing) !!
Wow, awesome! These kind of progress timeline videos are useful for seeing your improvement in almost any skill. Best of luck! It's a good idea. :)
Incredible !
Thank you. :D
@@MatthewAshworth You're welcome ! :) I have a question : is "Electro Swing Dance" like "Shuffle" ?
@@petitchatontoutmignon8639 They are very similar as they share many of the similar moves (V-step, Running Man, Charleston cross step, etc). :)
@@MatthewAshworth Thank you !
@@petitchatontoutmignon8639 You're welcome. :)
@@MatthewAshworth This guy is also really good at Electric Swing Dance. He is using his midsection a lot. ruclips.net/video/3sqhZScxVG8/видео.html
¡¡Congratulations!! ¡You made it! Keep going!! You inspire me to begin in this beautiful dance, I want to try too!! I send you a big hug from colombia!
Thank you very much. I am very pleased that this video has inspired you to try electro swing dance too. It's really fun. I highly recommend it. :)
It looks like so much fun!
Yes, it is. I'd recommend it. :)
I’d love to be this motivated
Take it one step at a time (and in this case literally). :D
Amazing man :D!!
Thank you very much!
I'm thinking of starting and I have you to thank for that as I've watched your progression it motivates me
at the beginning I thought, hey that's pretty good, you wanna improve in that? But boy, you did. Awesome
Thank you very much! I appreciate it. The beginning few weeks I'd say the moves were pretty rough and unrefined. :)
@@MatthewAshworth You never saw me dancing. You know nothing about rough and undefined :D
@@doktorsalami9315 Hehe. Well, it's all relative, I suppose. :)
@@MatthewAshworth ^^
@@MatthewAshworth where do you find the motivation to do this my guy
@@zenithchan1646 Ahah, good question. In those early days it was mostly by watching other electro swing dancers that inspired me. Dancers like TakeSomeCrime, JustSomeMotion, Neiland, etc.
Kickass... and Caravan palace rocks
Thanks! Yes, they are good at making music that gets you to dance. :)
I've just started learning to dance electro swing and I'm glad I'm not the only one who's dancing like super awkwardly
The first few weeks are always like that with any new skill. Keep going. :)
Holy shet this is so good! I love electro swing and you just made me love them even more dude :D I might as well just start to practice too!
Great to hear! Thank you. Glad I could give you some inspiration to learn this dance style too.
@@MatthewAshworth altrough i really like this style i never actually tried it before. Could you give me some starter tips?
@@zamasuisbae874 Yeah. Usually I recommend to everyone who asks about this to start with learning V-step, T-step, Running Man, and Mr X. They kind of form the basis of many other moves later on. So it's good to get a hang of these basic moves and then to build up on it from there.
@@MatthewAshworth alright thx man! I will look into them :D Thanks for everything you just earned a sub too :D looking forward to your videos!

Thats was amazing dude!
Thank you. :)
Awesome!
Thanks. :)
Fantastic
Thanks!
Really Cool. 👌
Thanks!
Hehe, thank you very much. I am glad you enjoyed watching these and that it's helping to inspire you to dance as well. :)
Great job man!!!!
Thanks! :)
Bravo !!!
Thanks!
Brilliant. Now that you are where you are, any tips for the new guys who wants to learn?
Thanks. :)
Incredible, dude
Thank you. :)
Brilliant. Never stop 🤟🔥
Good way to keep fit
It definitely is! Good for legs and for cardio.
@@oreseur513 You are very welcome, man. You might have to search through that video as it was fairly lengthy and he covers a lot of different moves in it (if I remember it was about 20 min long and arm moves are covered in the latter stages of it).
