  • "I'm a beadworker first. If you want to call me an artist, that's fine," Greeves says modestly, even though one of her pieces-a pair of beaded Converse high-tops-resides in the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (*Santa Fe Reporter).
Teri Greeves (b. 1970) is a beadwork artist who lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Enrolled in the Kiowa Indian Tribe of Oklahoma, Teri began her beading when she was eight years old on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. Through her beaded objects and jewelry, and her signature beaded high-top sneakers, she continues the tradition of telling the story of the American Indian, both contemporary and historical. Her works include beaded books, jewelry, and even high top sneakers.

Wow- this really hit a cord with me as my grandma owned a treading post and I crawled on the floor picking up beads as a child until finally my grandma started teaching me her skills. I still love to bead and don’t know where I “fit in” with the rules. Love love love this!

Hi, u do beautiful gorgeous work, I love how u draw freestyle, so blessed, gifted n talented. I'm Shoshone-Paiute residing on our Reservation which is located in southern ID, northern NV. I've been beading ever since I was 16, a friend I had met at the Stewart Indian School near Carson City, she's Paiute from McDermitt, NV. MY family has relatives from there also. She had taught me how to bead peyote stitched earrings with long fringes, from there I learned how to bead a variety of things on my own, i.e. medallion necklaces with long peyote stitched rope, by belt buckles, various sized fully beaded purses, coin purses n checkbook covers, various sized hair barrettes sewn onto metal clips n butterfly barrettes, bolo ties, hat bands, different styles of earrings, designs on vests, beaded designs onto my daughter's cradleboards, I've also beaded 4 head crowns for Pow-Wow royalties, belts, etc. I have two young adult daughters who have also been beading for about a year now. I had a number of grandmothers who used to bead beautiful items, even one who was blind, her work was so gorgeous. My late dad used to do leather work, he had many orders n had always made my 4 bro's n my leather belts including a purse for me. My bros were so talented in freehand artwork. Here at home there are many other ladies who are gifted beaders. Thnx for sharing ur gift of beading. God bless*

Marvelously done, thank you so much for the insight, and keeping the camera on your bead work long enough for a person to really get a good look at each piece and to enjoy the piece. So many times the camera rushes past a piece before you can get a good look and understand how the work is done. You and your story are an inspiration for me so I can do and teach my grandchildren. Thank you Linda

I think the second you make any kind of education mandatory, the spark in the eye is lost. Wether it’s learning painting or trigonometry. Learning should be inspirational not forced.

I am an artist. Lately beads started calling me and I started buying all the beads that I could. I don’t understand why but then I saw this and listened to your story. I’m going to wait for them to tell me what to do with them. What size beads are these that you use?
