As a Christian I don't mind gays having rights and all the freedoms I enjoy. I just think how annoying it'd be if EVERYTHING had Jesus smacked onto it to pander to Christians. It'd be annoying even to me LOL. We can all disagree and still be friends.
The problem is bad content, not representation. A lot of times you end up with a bad story or a bad game, that also just happens to be pushing for diversity, and the entire focus for these trolls is the representation, not the objectively bad story. Tells you where their hearts really are.
I personally don't think there is such a thing as too much diversity or forced diversity. There are just bad games that use DEI as a shield, bigots who can't handle black people or gays in their games, and then the rest of us annoyed that the creeps keep harping about how the gays are ruining their games.

Regardless though him trying to do a retelling of what happened when he had no idea himself and only trusted what he was told through the grapevine makes for a terrible start to this video and doesn't do him any favors in the eyes of the people he's trying to appeal to.

I agree. I'll play any game no matter the protagonist IF the character is well written and makes some kind of sense. If the game contains "the message" throughout, I wont play it,

@@bigtone231 Define forced. I don't think a race swap or focusing on stories that highlight real diversity issues is being forced. That's just focusing on things that don't directly pertain to you.
I get it. You might not be as interested in a game that digs deep into cultural issues for a race or people that you have nothing to do with.
You might not identify with a cast of mostly black characters or people who are of different orientations than you.
And that is exactly how all the people not being portrayed have always felt.
That's the entire point, to allow for greater representation and diversity to appeal to people traditionally left out in the cold.
If that is your problem, then you inherently just have a problem with minority people being in your game.
There are thousands of games published every day. The vast majority of them still focus on the majority of characters and issues and religion based on Western culture.
Hell, most of these so-called "woke" games still end up having a white male protagonist or a story very much focused on traditional plot devices. They just then will have a token trans person or will have a simple UI switch to allow for pronouns.
These are tiny small attempts to get the progressive crowd and yet people lose their minds over them.
AzzHeelVersusBabyFace just went viral for this. Starfield, an objectively mid-game that failed in a lot of ways gets a pass on the shit gameplay and bad design because herr, durr, pronouns.
Point being, it's the bad game, not the diversity in it. If you don't like the game because of the diversity, then you just don't like diversity and should ask yourself why this is.
This is coming from a cis white dude who grew up in the 90s and for a long time held the same views as people like The Quartering and who got upset when I saw woke stuff in games.
One day I just suddenly realized, the woke stuff bothered me because it felt like I was losing my place in the industry. This was my thing. I grew up on it. I loved it long before all these woke people did, and now they are infecting my games with their nonsense.
Realizing my issue was not the game, but rather my own hangup helped me see that diversity is not the problem, it's just bad games and personal problems.

May I suggest calling it fake diversity instead of forced. Fake in the sense that it’s plastic & not in the interest of the experience. It tokenizes the marginalized & uses them for appearance sake.

The problem is the US and its obsession with identity politics, the rest of the world can see that corporate greed is the problem with gaming and wanting everything to appeal to every demographic. Having gay or black people in games isn't the issue and it's insane how people have been played to believe that blaming mediocre games on a tiny group of 16 consultants.
Because the whole gamergate thing in the first place was to push people to the right. The last thing the drivers of the movement want to do is get people blaming capitalism.

It's annoying that they just cannot admit that they hate gays and whoever else, and do not want to see those characters in media. From my pov the focus on catering to diversity has come at a heavy price to quality and a focused narrative.

I agree with a large amount of the video, what most companies (like sweet baby inc.) don't seem to realize is, that gamers speak with their money, if a game seems to have forced diversity, they just won't buy it, if a game has a strong story telling and gameplay, and diversity isn't forced, it will be a major success, look at Baldur's Gate 3 for example, you can make a character however you like, and interact with whatever character the way like, have relationships with whoever you want, it is not forced at all and the game is praised by the majority of its players... good games gain fans, who want more from that studio, and who will come back for other IP's, forcing something to a demographic who has no interest in it, is only counter productive.
That’s a different style of game though. Not every game should be a “create your own character/ interact with whoever you want” Like a game shouldn’t be viewed as trash if it happens to have a black woman lead in the game as the story. Sometimes games will have different walks of life… this entire thing is a grift who gives a fuck about this lol

@@enjoi0555 to me personally it doesn't matter what a character looks like, but at the same time it also depends on what kind of game it is, if for example a game is supposed to be historically correct, but then place a protaganist/antagonist in the game that doesn't fit there, it ruins the game for me and prevents me from getting the game, but with Forspoken for example, I was looking forward to that game a hell, it looked like such a fun game, but I was like I will wait for the release and see how it is received, and because of that I decided not to get it (yet), so to me if a game seems fun or good then I wait to get it until it is released and then I see how it is received, walked to many times into the trap of pre-ordering the game and the game being garbage in the end.

10 years ago social media platforms and even RUclips weren't seen as the main publicity vehicles, as such companies depended on publishers and mega companies to advertise their games.

I do not remember anything about forced diversity during first gamer gate. At least not as a main focus.
There were issues with gaming media that sparked the whole thing, cultural clash due to feminist frequency and a whole gamers are dead narrative.
With that said, what Americans call forced diversity, we Europeans called "Americanism" of culture, a concept of whatever setting you make in any media, it needs to resemble the melting pot that is modern day America, even when it makes no sense (like in historical setting).

Gamergate wasn't about diversity, it was about ethics in journalism. The straw that broke the camel's back was Zoe Quinn sleeping with no less than FIVE MEN in exchange for clout and positive reviews for an otherwise trash game.
This even started the whole meme where quinn would be referred to as FIVE GUYS BURGERS AND FRIES (a famous fast food chain in the US).
Except Quinn's boyfriend himself later said he had no evidence the reviewer had slept with Quinn. Also, if it was about ethics in journalism, why has there only been the one story that kickstarted the whole movement and absolutely nothing since?

It wasn't the forced diversity that made me mad. It was when less talented developers sought success through identity politics and were rewarded by trust fund babies in the media.

As an LGBT person and the only reason I deem it important to mention that is because I feel like there are plenty of people like myself who don't subscribe to forced diversity quotas when it comes to movies or videos games. People these days are getting upset about games set in a place or made by a certain group of people and said game not representing THEM or acknowledging THEIR identity. My question to that is... why is it the job of a game to represent ANYONE? The game should only represent itself and to expect and REQUIRE a game reflect each person who plays it is very weird. I think to me, it all comes back to this need in 2024 for members within the LGBT to get their sense of identity or validation from other people or the media they consume - WHICH IS A PROBLEM. I think if people could generate their own sense of indentity, self worth, and validation within themselves - they wouldn't need to seek it out in every single show, video game, or movie they watch.
I agree with this. I find all this forced implantation is actual causing a lot of hate towards the LGBTQ+ community, as people are blaming them for what is happening to entertainment media. It's companies just trying to prove that they care for extra points, when actually I say it shows the complete opposite because they aren't doing it for the right reasons.
I think characters should just identify by their personalities in games. Rather than their race or pronouns, gender, sex, or whatever.

Awesome video!. Wanted to share my recent experience with forced diversity. I was playing need for speed unbound. The cops are chasing me, and I hear a female officer say, "Let's wrap this up. I've gotta get home to my wife and kid.'...what cop would ever say that during a high speed chase??? It was sooo forced and groan inducing. It really feels like pandering and I just find it off-putting.

Also there are very few AAA games that have gay characters aside from massive open world games that have tons of characters, and even if theres a gay character in there somewhere, the anti gay people have their meltdowns. Also games that have a ton of characters like overwatch or RB6 or whatever have a couple. They use this ridiculous argument like boogie did where if there is a gay or female character, it has to be a main part of the story. Them being gay has to be central and the game has to be designed around that, there can't just be a gay character. That is absurd.
The Walking Dead Game by TT Studios was a genuinely diverse game. Fair gender balance. Black protagonist. They even mocked aging white, male conservatives! Nobody complained, and everyone praised it; that was more than 10 years ago. Contrast that with TLOU 2, or any other recent game that has faced criticism for "forced diversity," and it's pretty clear why the games are viewed differently by the gaming community. One has characters that happen to be minorities, LGBTQ, etc. (ultimately making no difference to the plot and allowing any player to become immersed in the story), whereas the games that receive criticism make the character's minority status CENTRAL to their personality and actively impede most player's ability to become immersed in the game.
@@flyingphoenix113 the fact that you use TLOU 2 as an example for that shows you aren't consistent. How tf is Ellie being a lesbian CENTRAL to her personality? Because her relationship is a huge part of the story or what? Are you going pretend there isn't depth to her character? Also if that walking dead game came out today, the usual people would absolutely complain.
While escaping reality is one reason to consume media, it can also help us understand and process society and ourselves. For example, playing a game Silent Hill 2 isn't just about having a good time - there are lots of really heavy themes there, not just escapism. No one would argue Lord of the Rings is pure escapism just because it's fantasy, and I think it does games a disservice to say they're "just" escapism or "just" entertainment. Everything with a story worth experiencing will say something about the world and the human condition. Hell, I'd argue even the Mario games have things to say and take stances on stuff - if they didn't, games like Braid wouldn't exist.
Saying there's forced diversity in all or even a majority of games/movies/etcetera is kind of a broad statement, and one that ought to be substantiated. Looking at the most popular games on Steam, it's titles like God of War and Helldivers. I wouldn't call those examples of forced diversity. I guess we could call Cyberpunk 2077 a 'woke' game because you can make a character that's female presenting but has a deep voice and a dick? But that game isn't really considered a paragon of LGBTQ representation, nor is it unsuccessful.

I’m behind on your videos.
I don’t like forced diversity in video games or movies or shows. As a gay man, I don’t like to be reminded of how horrible the real world is. In video games, movies, and shows, I want to see others like me, but i don’t want the story to basically “break the 4th wall” and tell me this person is this way.
I enjoy imagining I’m in a world where nobody thinks twice about it. There’s no angry mob. There was no need for a movement. The problems never existed because nobody created a hateful rule thousands of years ago.
A couple shows that I enjoyed where they did it correctly was Another Life and The Expanse. People acknowledged each other’s partners without acknowledging their sexuality or gender. It wasn’t forced.
That’s a world we will never live in but it’s nice to imagine one where nobody cared about things like that. All that matters is 1) are you a good person and 2) is who you are or what you are doing going to harm anyone else?
Warcraft in Dragonflight failed hard on forced diversity. There were 4 small questlines where they really put it out there. The heterosexual love stories didn’t have any effort put into them. The writing flowed naturally. It should be the same for all, but they feel they have to force it to feel they’re being diverse.
Instead of a line like “my husband will help you with the next quest” they would basically treat it like verbal PDA.
And to top it off, the stories weren’t even good.
I played hogwarts because I kept seeing so much about it. I knew the political nonsense wasn’t there, and ironically it has a bunch of diversity in it. I’m not even a Harry Potter fan but hey; they got my sale because people couldn’t shut the fuck up about it

Though I agree with the majority of your comments, I think it’s important to remember representation matters. When we use a term like “forced diversity”, it implies that “diverse character” must be BETTER than what exists now otherwise it’s bad. That shouldn’t be the case. There’s absolutely nothing negative about just have a POC be a protagonist and it NOT have anything to do with them being a POC. They can just, exist in the story. Just having the ability to see oneself represented on the big screen or in a game can do tremendous good for young consumers.
So im just saying that SBI is a BAD thing. they have all kinds of unsettling red flag

Video games are portals into an alternative universe. One where you can act out being someone else that you might not be in real life - or it can be. You decide. Fantasy is a realm where censorship should not be an issue. Sometimes I like to explore a HP Lovecraftian horror story. Other times I want a story that emulates real life. Nobody should deny potential gamers their own experience. Censorship is there enough of in the real world. Please do not let in bleed into the realm of fantasy.
Boogie I am glad you brought this topic up. I have felt so alineated as a non diverse gamer. One video game even started by the opening scene of a black female saying racial slurs about white men. I want old school non agenda driven games back personally.

I love playing videogames since i was a little kid, i am in my early 40's and I still play video games.
Like I agree but you know these lists aren't just "bad games" in the end any game that dares to try, good or bad, gets on a hate list somewhere because some don't draw the line at "the game/ character has to be good/ make sense" which is such a subjective standard to hold a game to while also making sure sensitive groups aren't being targeted simply for existing in a game world. The line doesn't stop ANYWHERE for some people. That's basically where I'm at. I like fun games. I like diverse characters. I hate bigotry and targeted harassment of any kind. Good video. I don't think GamerGate will ever hit again like it did the first time. What got us the first time was that most regular gamers didn't know that publications hated them, were more so activists than serving their audience. We all know it now! I don't know who even bothers with them anymore.

Boogie - you're talking like a "right wing extremist". It's good to use reason and logic in life, including video games. We need good and fun video games and it doesn't matter who they portray as long as the story is good, the gameplay is fun and we can just enjoy it, without being lectured.
