I gave up collecting altogether. My long-term goal is to sell almost all of them and get back as much as I can from what I paid for it (I started collecting in the 70s). Awesome vid, sire!
I stopped being so serious about collecting when it dawned on me that comic books are not that rare and material things do not give you more life. I collect what my boys and I like because it's a family thing.
I often find that I also hunt for something sometimes for years, and then I finally get it and then a week later I'm like.... meh. Why are we like this!? The hunter/gatherer gene be strong.
I’m not sure I’ve given completely up on any of the goals. I’ve had to modify the hell out of some. I really want to complete my Phantom Lady 13-23 & Hulk 1-6 runs. Kinda close on both. But boy, it can get expensive…quickly.
As a comic book reader who started around Contagion/Legacy, and then went back to Knightfall, I salute your efforts to get all those individual books in 9.8! I love that era of Batman. And some Kelley Jones original art would be one of the first things I'd buy if I ever won the lottery :)
My "problem" with collecting X-Men, FF, and Avengers is that I've got #90-to-end-of-run done, and everything left will start getting PRICEY. Can't imagine I'll ever get most of the single digit issues, but I'm not done trying.
I have a goal of collecting the Todd McFarlane run of ASM newsies in 9.6 or better with white pages. I know, very specific but I grew up with these books and love them! I’m about half way there.
Im halfway done collecting the original Static Shock series....I already got all the big books #1, #2, #33, #44, & #45 all for $3 each. I have 27 books out of 45 & the first 15 books in order....had to pause because i dont want to buy anything online, i love the joy of book hunting in the shops💯
Thanks for sharing your trials. Coincidentally, I do have a couple that are on your same list but not actively seeking any longer and just keeping an eye out. Another great video! 😊
I've been trying to get as much of ASM as I could. I've realized that getting a single digit book is impossible for me and there are quite a few double digit ones that I wouldn't be able to afford. But the triple digit ones I've been thinking I could get. Obviously I'm stuck on 101 and 129 (My personal holy grail) and trying to see if I can get them before the 1,000th book comes out (so I've got a little bit of time), but it's tough to get them. I gave up on Spawn after 201 and have let that go unless I see a great Greg Capullo cover. I've given up on Wolverine and Deadpool (Even though I own both of their first appearances) and gave up on X-Men, too. Sold off all my X-Men books (not nearly as impressive as some of my other runs I was working with, but still sold them all).
i wanted to get a small Swamp Thing collection but gave up on it because i got into other characters and i am now trying to get a full collection of star wars the original series and low grade ASM
I've got full runs of Wolverine Vol 1 and 2, West Coast Avengers, The Thing Solo Series, Micronauts and Battlestar Galactica in my PC. I am also a HUGE James O'Barr Crow fan and am also joining you in the hunt!
I’m hunting for JLA 3. The Superman test cover I fell in love with this upper left corner where the DC logo is placed. Man this test cover I want bad! As always keep on hunting!
I agree with you on the Daredevil. It's been a good read for years. I have a DD #1, but the tape on the plastic bag grabbed it as I ok it out of the bag and ripped the front cover. It's one of those moments I view with profound regret.
you make me feel like its okay to be okay not wanting to collect all the #1s of the big books everyone goes after. they are just to obtainable. but im always happy collecting anything else i can afford or anything i really want... mostly late 80s into the 90s. thats my jam and im happy with it
I had to give up retro game collecting/playing video games because of a permanent thumb pain condition I developed 😔 I've replaced it with comic collecting, but it will never ever be the same and never truly replace it.
I remember trying to get a set of the Warren magazine, 1984. I would have counted it complete if I got issues 1-10. (With issue 11, the title was changed to 1994.) It was back in the '80s when I attempted to complete this set, and I could not find a # 5. I had all the others. I looked for a # 5 at various comic shows and in the Comic Buyers Guide. There was no internet then, and so no eBay. Finally I gave up, and sold my copies of 1-4, and 6-10. After that, I kept finding copy after copy of #5.
There are just some of my grails that keep getting further out of my price range, so have just started trying to complete runs. The one thing I havnt stopped trying to complete is an issue of every Dark Horse Star Wars in newsstand, all series.
Like you I was shooting to get FF 1-10 in 5.5 or high. Mostly because I lucked upon a copy of 5 about 20 years ago that I later got graded at 5.5. I wanted continuity…I got mostly complete but a #1 at that grade seems unrealistic. I feel you on the art too.
I wanted to get a complete run of Uncanny X-Men, post Giant Size X-men, but there’s a few issues out of my price range. More recently, I’ve been collecting Heroes Return era Marvel. It’s very affordable since I’ve found almost everything in dollar and discount bins. This includes the entire Busiek/Perez run of Avengers.
As you know James the Incredible Hulk is my favorite character and my main goal is to own the original 6 issues, which you know, like Incredible Hulk #181 are the most expensive Hulk books. I'm blessed to have #3,5, & 6. I'm currently making payments on a #4, but after that comes #1 and #2 which might be unattainable for me, but I used to say about the others too.
I got my ASM 1 in a 5.5, and that left only Amazing Fantasy 15 in similar grade. Given the price of that, it's pretty much impossible I'll ever check that one off the list.
I myself had a hot toy addiction at one point lol they look so awesome but in the end i just sold them. There were too many i wanted and it was never ending. One of my stretch goals is to have an original art piece of Alex Ross. Specifically a page from Kingdom Come
Thanks for the video. I have a very low grade Hulk 181 (my original copy from 1974). Lately I’ve been thinking about trying to get a nice copy? Not sure why?
See I don't care about grades for books like you mentioned. As long as I have the book in a presentable copy to display and the wear shows the history I'll be happy
Still have my Green Lantern volume 4 goal of all 9.8. At least 60% there. Almost have full set of GL v2. Probably look to upgrade that collection over time. There are too many other series that I'd like to complete, but have to take one at a time
I would love a 9.8 first series crow 1,2,3 and 4. Also I'm working on completing the original run of niel gaimans sandman, after that I'll move onto the original run of hellblazer and hopefully after that a malibu sun 13 error printing on back in a 9.8.
Great to see the GL (Hal) statue there! I don´t collect as you by any means. But there´s a collection that I regret not having bought at the time. I moved to Spain and they had the Lobo comics from the 90s collected in several volumes. Very cheap. Just like a regular book with soft cover and the pages were newspaper quality. But each volume was sold for around 8 dollars and each had several issues. Lobo is one of my favorite "obscure" DC characters. So I wanted it. Yet, for some reason, I stopped at volume 4 (if so) of a collection of 13 (or so). Then a new publisher got the rights of DC and sells the collection on a deluxe, hardcover format at over 30 dollars each. I ADORE Lobo but anyone can say that his comics aren´t the best. Especially not to pay that much on such an edition. So I would have been more than happy to get the original cheap collection. Now, I can´t. Here´s hoping they decide to realease it on cheaper edition.
ASM 1 is still my goal. Kick myself in the butt for not looking into years ago. Years ago I could definitely afford it. With its current value…not at the moment.
While not direct original art, you could try for Kelley Jones' Batman Gallery Edition from Graphitti Design (similar to Artiist's Edition from IDW). Real size scanned original art. I have one.
I used to own all the Inferno comics and their crossovers as well as Secret Wars 2. I sold them all years ago, but I would love to rebuild my former collections. I just can't afford it.
Given up on Action Comics 242. Got crazy expensive before I could put hands on a copy I liked. Stretch goal: Green Lantern 7. (Yes, I like first appearances of villains.)
Big goal books I had to stop pursuing were Daredevil 1, and Hulk 181. Every time I had a chance life threw me a curve ball and I missed out. Black Cat 1 - J. Scott Campbell variant (Le Chat Noir), missed it when it came out somehow and it's beyond what I want to pay for a modern book, Walking Dead 1, I'm a huge walking dead fan and I was late to the game, like the big 2 when I'd have an opportunity something came up then it shot up in value. Books I'll never own but would have loved to had things been different.
I don't know if anyone remembers Jademan Comics from the late 80's early 90's but they were a Hong Kong based comic company that tried to break into the US market after the successes of Akira, Fist of the North Star, Robotech and other Japanese manga properties. They produced comics like Drunken Fist, The Blood Sword, Iron Marshall and Oriental Heroes also known as Dragon Tiger Gate or Little Ruffians. I collected the hell out of those books but a lot got lost in my collection so I've been trying to track down all of the english translated and published for cheap. Some of the later issued can get real expensive because not a lot of them were published at the end of their runs. I LOVED those comics though. I'm also trying to track down comics from my childhood, a lot of the comics my stepfather bought me when he introduced me to the hobby, particularly my personal first issues of a particular series. Like I remember the first Xmen book I ever read, or the first Hulk or Daredevil. A lot of those books I have started to buy. So those are some of the books I;m currently hunting.
Collecting original art is like being a mega key/grail only collector. Every piece you really want is grail prices or more. Every other piece is still high key values. 😅 My current goal is mostly just Albedo #2 in a nice grade, not sure how high I can go but I would probably trade my entire collection for it. Including my Fantastic Four 5. Maybe Tales of Suspense 39. But I feel like the cost for Albedo 2 is falling a lot right now (because it skyrocketed not too long ago, more than most.) So kind of waiting it out. Would also like a TMNT #1 first print at some point but yeah... price is a bit high and is not my #1 priority.
I had told myself I was going to collect the full runs of every major Moon Knight volume. Dude. Don't let yourself collect full runs. It is NOT the way to collect. Just collect the issues you like, or you'll burn yourself out, along with your wallet. 😅
As a Turtles fan, i cant justify anything other than third lrint of #1. You can pick up 9.6's pretty reasonably priced. Daredevil and hulk 1 are my stretch goals, but i dont expect to ecer own them and ive come to peace with that.
The two major goals that I abandoned, were from the indie scene. - A copy of Tales from the Thorn, the Bone origin and 1st app, but it may not exist anywhere anymore, since it was a photocopied fanzine with only 100 copies or so made. -The Milk & Cheese Star Wars mini comic. Almost same situation, there s not a sinlge copy anywhere. I ended up buying the Milk & Cheese omnibus HC that included the strips. And to top on the impossible of those chases, I know both creators personally, Evan Dorkin and Jeff Smith especially. Neither of them have a copy of these mini comics for themselves...
I had a few grails that I thought I'd never get. The first one was from my childhood it was G.I. Joe Vol 1 #43 even working at Midtown Comics warehouse I couldn't find it but back at NYCC 2022 I got one Raw and had it graded sure it's a low grade but I got it to have it. And the second is Batman Vol 3 #23 (Swamp Thing trolls Batman) I picked this up at a random comic shop my friends and I were at.
For the time being I’ve given up on getting a VG or mid grade Incredible Hulk 181 and Giant X-men 1. At the moment they’re too rich for my blood. But maybe some day I’ll pursue that goal.
I gave up collecting altogether. My long-term goal is to sell almost all of them and get back as much as I can from what I paid for it (I started collecting in the 70s). Awesome vid, sire!
I’ve been working on Classic X-Men, all Newsstand. Not an expensive collection, but harder to build than you’d think!
I stopped being so serious about collecting when it dawned on me that comic books are not that rare and material things do not give you more life. I collect what my boys and I like because it's a family thing.
This channel has grown so fast! Never doubt yourself James 🎉🎉🎉
Great topic. I'm working on getting 2 of every Spawn book. Every ratio variant. Every convention variant and 2 of all the newsstand variants.
I often find that I also hunt for something sometimes for years, and then I finally get it and then a week later I'm like.... meh. Why are we like this!? The hunter/gatherer gene be strong.
It's not the destination, it's the journey!
Just like a drug, youre high, sober up, then want to get high again
I’m not sure I’ve given completely up on any of the goals.
I’ve had to modify the hell out of some.
I really want to complete my Phantom Lady 13-23 & Hulk 1-6 runs. Kinda close on both.
But boy, it can get expensive…quickly.

A true collector never quits.
Fellow Metroid lover! Glad to hear it! I just played zero Misson for the first time and had a great time.
This might be my favorite channel
I have a goal of collecting the Todd McFarlane run of ASM newsies in 9.6 or better with white pages. I know, very specific but I grew up with these books and love them! I’m about half way there.
I was going to do the same! But I was gonna go all raw. Good luck to you!
I’ve given up on ever scoring your Zatanna statue, especially with international shipping. Can’t do it. 😢
I've been slowly but surely putting together a full run of archie Sonic, it's definitely a pain in the ass to find issues though lol
Walked away from Fantastic Four #1 but still trying to get a full run of EC horror titles from the 1950s.
Those GL early’s awesome!
Always appreciate hearing about your comic journey❤❤❤
I appreciate that
Thanks for always sharing your knowledge. I hope you two get the house you want.
Haven’t watched in awhile but started again recently and the quality is still high, well done
Thanks for sharing your trials. Coincidentally, I do have a couple that are on your same list but not actively seeking any longer and just keeping an eye out. Another great video! 😊
Love your videos man, keep it up ,they make my day!
Love the nod to Green Lantern.
I agree that 1st shadow is a great book and tough to get in 9.8 never owned one but im glad i have some OA of him as well. Great video bud
I've been trying to get as much of ASM as I could. I've realized that getting a single digit book is impossible for me and there are quite a few double digit ones that I wouldn't be able to afford. Thanks for doing such a great show, yours are the best
I have also given up the TMNT 1 first print, and am going to settle for a higher grade 2nd or 3rd.
Gave up on NM.M Night Nurse 1-4. Never got any issues.
i wanted to get a small Swamp Thing collection but gave up on it because i got into other characters and i am now trying to get a full collection of star wars the original series and low grade ASM
Fun video. At least I'm not the only collector that gets frustrated finding my own personal grails at obtainable prices.
Looked at HA and was shocked at the original artwork prices! Gave up before I began.
I could see my goal being all of the original star wars run, or all the Canto comics.
I have Azrael 15 & 16 reprints. Used to buy a bunch of the Toys R Us multipacks when I was a kid.
Batman 121 at least 5.0. Mr. Freeze episodes on the animated series were my absolute favorite as a kid. That is my grail.
Wow, I totally understand you going into shock on original art. I was blown away on the prices! Respect!
You and me both!
I am finding the chase is fun but once I get something I want. it's like now what?
I agree with you on the Daredevil. It's been a good read for years. I have a DD #1, but the tape on the plastic bag grabbed it as I ok it out of the bag and ripped the front cover. It's one of those moments I view with profound regret.
that happened to me once. i cried.
Have given up on the Vampirella & Gun Honey variants..just happy to have single issues to complete the storylines now..
you make me feel like its okay to be okay not wanting to collect all the #1s of the big books everyone goes after. they are just to obtainable. but im always happy collecting anything else i can afford or anything i really want... mostly late 80s into the 90s. thats my jam and im happy with it
Most of em are nightmarishly priced
Another great video 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I had to give up retro game collecting/playing video games because of a permanent thumb pain condition I developed 😔 I've replaced it with comic collecting, but it will never ever be the same and never truly replace it.
A comic that Im about to give up on is Hulk 181 in a 9.0 or better. Great video
I remember trying to get a set of the Warren magazine, 1984. I would have counted it complete if I got issues 1-10. (With issue 11, the title was changed to 1994.) *_This is a smart video. Someone will reach out about the books you are missing._*

Honestly my stretch goal at the moment is a 9.8 UF4. Thank you for all the content and advice you have provided over the years cheers.
Keep it up!
Great vid!
I'd like a complete set of "DC Universe"multi-pack in 9.8
As you know James the Incredible Hulk is my favorite character and my main goal is to own the original 6 issues, which you know, like Incredible Hulk #181 are the most expensive Hulk books. I'm blessed to have #3,5, & 6. I'm currently making payments on a #4, but after that comes #1 and #2 which might be unattainable for me, but I used to say about the others too.

Another great video.
I know the feeling trying to find certain books especially if its out of my price range
Specifically a page from Kingdom Come
My goal right now is to put the entire SIKTC run together, including second, third, and fourth printings.
I also grab anything knightfall, and I would love to find a crow anything.
I can relate a little. I think I just put some things on pause cause I know if things line up just right I'll pick up them dream item's
I am currently working on the Marvel 25th anniversary border covers. Got a good bit, but a few of them are tough to find at a reasonable price.
I'm working on a full Usagi Yojimbo run, including Albedo & Critters.
Having a copy of 9.8 ultimate fallout 4 would be sick
I have faith that you will complete your Contagion hunt one day.
Great video, always looking for those comics.
You and me both!
I know how you feel. I'm down seizing, had to give up my spawn 200 run. To replace it now in the wild. Almost impossible now.
Well I know why you wanted 9.0 or higher. MINTHUNTER😂
Thanks for the video. I have a very low grade Hulk 181 (my original copy from 1974). Lately I’ve been thinking about trying to get a nice copy? Not sure why?
I'd like to get an 8.5 or higher Marvel Spotlight 1st Ghost Rider. Such a cool cover 😊
See I don't care about grades for books like you mentioned. As long as I have the book in a presentable copy to display and the wear shows the history I'll be happy
Hawkman 4 in a 9.8 ill get one day
Still have my Green Lantern volume 4 goal of all 9.8.
First Miles is my grail. Fingers crossed. Love the content.
Good luck!!!!

Statues are so nice, but the price and size make it possible. Only got so much room in my house, I guess I could get an AC storage room?!
Knightfall was an awesome series.
Own an entire run of a series with all double covers
While not direct original art, you could try for Kelley Jones' Batman Gallery Edition from Graphitti Design (similar to Artiist's Edition from IDW). Real size scanned original art. I have one.
I used to own all the Inferno comics and their crossovers as well as Secret Wars 2. I sold them all years ago, but I would love to rebuild my former collections. I just can't afford it.
Given up on Action Comics 242. Got crazy expensive before I could put hands on a copy I liked. Stretch goal: Green Lantern 7. (Yes, I like first appearances of villains.)
I might try to get some of my games graded!
Big goal books I had to stop pursuing were Daredevil 1, and Hulk 181. Every time I had a chance life threw me a curve ball and I missed out. Black Cat 1 - J. I'm on a mission to get all the Golden Age Joker covers, not sure if I will be able to do it but it'll take some time!
I’d love to have a Crow #1! It’s one of my grails. But it’s way too expensive for me
I don't know if anyone remembers Jademan Comics from the late 80's early 90's but they were a Hong Kong based comic company that tried to break into the US market after the successes of Akira, Fist of the North Star, Robotech and other Japanese manga properties. Would also like a TMNT #1 first print at some point but yeah... price is a bit high and is not my #1 priority.
I wonder, if those Green Lanterns numbers 1 and 7 had better covers would it have been a little harder to give up?
I am holding out for a spidey 3 and 14, hopefully one day the dream deal will come up. if only i bought them in 2010
I had told myself I was going to collect the full runs of every major Moon Knight volume. Dude. Don't let yourself collect full runs. It is NOT the way to collect. Just collect the issues you like, or you'll burn yourself out, along with your wallet. 😅

The only comic I want but KNOW I will never get in my lifetime is X-Men #1
Man I thought I'd made some bad collecting decisions but....dang 😅😂😂
I want San Diego Comic Con Comic #2 in any grade for first real appearance of Hellboy 😮😅
For the time being I’ve given up on getting a VG or mid grade Incredible Hulk 181 and Giant X-men 1. At the moment they’re too rich for my blood. But maybe some day I’ll pursue that goal.
Great video
