How to UNLOCK your Spektrum AR637TA / AR630 / AR631

- In this video, Tom explains the features a new update for AR637TA owners that allows for you to program your receiver like a open stock AR637T OR make tweaks while retaining the preset settings. Follow along to learn how.

UPDATE! - This process works for AR630 and AR631 receivers included with BNF models, process is exactly the same.
What is required...
- An AR637TA receiver from a BNF or RTF aircraft
- Spektrum USB Programmer - sold here - www.horizonhob...
- Spektrum PC programmer app (Windows OS) - spektrumrc.cach...
This update allows for owners of Bind-n-Fly and Ready to Fly models equipped with an AR637TA to be able to unlock their receivers.
- Allows users to factory reset the receiver, permitting the AR637TA to program via Forward Programming like an open stock AR637T
- Allows users to preserve the preset settings of the AR637TA, with the addition of tuning AS3X gains and some flight mode settings
- Adds a Frame Rate menu allowing for users to customize Servo frame rate output settings
Some important notes
- We strongly suggest backing up the receiver via the forward programming menu before making any changes
- If you factory reset an AR637TA, the model presets and suggested settings used for the preset code on the AR637TA will no longer function as before with the preset settings on the AR637TA.

Finally got mine to work! Had a heckuva time getting the programming software on my PC to see my receiver but once it did it was seamless. Forward programming works great from the D6XE to the unlocked AR367 TA

I'm connected with my ar630 and Bluetooth dongle shows connection with a steady light fixated. I can still only control the services and set up the as3x through my transmitter what is wrong
Great video. Most of my planes are PNP and I get to choose the Spektrum receiver myself to align with my NX8. Only one of my planes, a Twin Timber, is a BNF. The unlock lesson allows me to free up the receiver and transform it from a TA to a T for more programming options. Thanks!
A great feature would be an initial trim hold. What I mean by that is a way during a maiden flight while you're holding the plane level you toggle a switch that sets all the trims to the manually held positions.

@@bcflyer99 Are you saying there is a feature called Auto Trim? Or being funny? I have the same question. After I get a model trimmed up after initial flights I’d like to capture those as permanent ZERO trim settings. Is that possible to do? An answer intended to help a beginner would be appreciated.
@@bendrixbailey1430 Jeti has this feature. I had a DS14 which has features that Spektrum may never have.
Radiomaster has that , its called Instant trim
it isnt even that hard to just trim your plane
IF you dont see the 'other settings' option in forward programming - go back to an older firmware version. bind the rx after the firmware update.
What am I missing? I don't see the programming cable being used anywhere in this video yet it is one of the "required" items.
Having just bought the ex-flite conscendo 1.5 I thought getting such an expensive receiver in it made it stunning value, but looking at it I’m guessing that I can’t use it to fly something else in the future because I’m much too dense (64 years old ex coal miner) this video might as well been in Part, chinese n part Japanese, both languages I know zero of. It’s still a lovely plane but it did influence my decision a little to buy it.
Great update. Now I can utilise the full power of this wonderful receiver. Even just unlocking with the new firmware has allowed me to utilise 3 flight modes, one with ASX3, one with SAFE and one with neither without changing anything other than a bit of programming set up in my radio. But being a modeler I always like to tweak things to suit me, so I have modified the gain settings on my Horizon Hobby P-51 Mustang 1.5m, particularly in roll to suit my liking.
What I would like to do is further tweak the SAFE settings and possibly assign a panic mode which the 637 is capable of. I would also like to explore the different SAFE modes available. Unfortunately I need to start from scratch as the forward programming will not display the SAFE settings currently set for this model and allow me to tweak them from the initial settings. Whilst I saved the factory settings to back up, I cannot save another setup without losing the factory settings which in turn means that I am unwilling to save the new setup because I do not want to lose the ability to restore the factory settings. Is there some way that Horizon could publish these settings somewhere for each of the models that come with the AR637TA so that we can recover them if we need to?
We are working on a way to export models via the PC programmer and USB cable, BUT we can look into sharing the Safe values.
@@SpektrumRCvideos that would be awesome, both the exporting by the programming cable and supplying the values (perhaps via myspektrum website). Would give us more confidence to play with the settings in BNF models.
I took my AR 630 out of the f-15 from e-flite. Everything seems to work fine as long as I don't have to change or flip service around. But on my dx8e transmitter I don't have the part where it says other settings I only have the part where it says gyro setting. I cannot reset the gyros to fit and work for another plane I can't change the the orientation with Bluetooth I can only do it on the computer which I do not have a cord but why would it not offer me that do I have to update the receiver.??
Hi Brandy, the AR630 is locked and will not allow you to change any settings until it is either unlocked or factory reset - as shown in this video.

@@HFamilyDad apparently the hardware for the vario does not exist on the TA models and only comes on the AR637T. OP responded to my initial comment below.
Is the UNLOCKing part of this video just a link to another video for updating? You had the PC out, and USB cable, and then went straight into forward programming with the transmitter.
Seriously. Is the unlocking done just by updating?
When I plug it in with the USB to PC cable, it says “there was a problem reading the device’s identification” so I cannot update it. I have two AR637TA receivers doing the same thing, which makes me think I’m doing something wrong. But I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong

My AR637TA that’s in my Timber won’t show a choice for “Other Settings”. It’s just not there. Any idea why.
Ahhhh....it's finally here! Been waiting for the day. Now I can put all my 637T's into my gliders for vario use and the 637TA's go into power planes where I care less about altimeters and varios!
Great idea! I already pulled out my 637TA from a Conscendo crash to put into a PNP. Might as well go all the way and swap it out for the Vario and Altimeter. Issue solved!
@@AirVexedRC So you just stuffed the 637TA in a PNP plane without changing the configuration? I noticed the gains, especially yaw, are set incredibly high. Did the PNP fly okay or did it oscillate?
@@OhMySack The only reason it worked prior to today is because I put into a PNP of the same model I crashed. So no programming changes had to be made. The little programming experience I do have with the 636 has taught me not to mess with the Gains and Priorities unless I want to change the behavior of the plane. Too many hours with that and the Safe Model Builder 3rd party app.
For the 637T, I plan to cheat whenever I can by using the Spektrum Programmer and pulling the gain settings from the 636 SRM files. I'll get the SAFE Select Mix settings from the Safe Model Builder. That way I know I'm not starting from nothing. Since HH didn't build a 636 SRM file for me to pull the Conscendo Evolution settings, my starting settings will use the Conscendo Advanced file.

It won’t show the “other setting”option what do I do? I plugged it into the plane esc and I used a nx8
I want to unlock/update my AR636TA but the SPMA3065 programming cable is backordered for maybe a month or more. However I do have the SPMBT1000 BT programming module which is suppose to program receivers. I can connected the Bluetooth module to the receiver, paired it to my PC, but the PC program doesn't seem to have the smarts to look for a BT connection. Am I doing something wrong or is the PC program just not that smart?
The Bluetooth module does not work with the AR637TA
@@SpektrumRCvideos WHY?? I bought a NX8 transmitter assuming it was the latest and greatest 'swiss army knife' of modern communication technology. It's very disappointing to find out that I still need a bunch of piecemeal solutions to register, unlock , update, and program receivers. Why isn't ALL of this allowed through forward programming rather than a hodgepodge of adapters and procedures?
With the advances in our transmitters and the connectivity to wifi, we hope that the user interface will include those types of creature comforts in the future, but as of now you still need a couple extra items to fill in the gaps. Namely for your situation you will need a PC and the USB programmer cable SPMA3065 to unlock your AR637TA. That said, you do have one of the latest pieces of hardware and you can count on better connectivity to your Spektrum receivers and devices in the future.
Hi, I have a AR637TA but can't get altitude telemetry from it. Do I factory reset to get this feature as it's on a AR637T?

I've tried updating my AT637TA with the SPMA3065 cable, but when I plug the cable into my RX and computer nothing happens, It won't connect, I can't click "power cable" or anything. Any ideas why thats happening?
I have the AR 636A in my Carbon Z Cub SS. Can this receiver be unlocked so it can be used in another aircraft? I'm replacing the 636A with a new AR637T and it will otherwise be scrap - or useful only to another Cub owner.
My ar637ta isn’t connecting to the software. It says cable connected but no device. Tried it with battery power then with cable power. Getting light on receiver blinking.
When I try this the cable won’t connect to the reciever and just gets extremely hot.
When I connect to my receiver I have no option for the factory reset. I’m not sure what to do now. It shows full signal strength. Won’t even allow me to move any servos or anything
Can you do a set up video for the Blade 230 s V2 using the IX 12 or IX 20, the manual that comes with it is design to be set up and used with the Spektrum DX oe DXe model transmitters which is confusing to understand.

Just a question, when you update the software version of the receiver to unblock it, will you lose the data/settings of the receiver?
I see no "Other settings" in the Forward Programming Main Menu. Only "Gyro Settings" appear. Rx is AR631 Code Version EFL54500 from my Cherokee BNF. As I don´t use this Rx in my Cherokee I want to unlock it and reprogram program from scratch.
Once you update it and factory reset the AR631 it will then have "other settings"
@@SpektrumRCvideos Sorry but I must be missing something. To see the Other settings menu I shall perform a Factory Reset to my AR631, right. Factory reset is performed from the Tx menu Forward Programming/Other settings/Factory Reset. How can I do this when I can´t see the Other Settings menu?

Tom - this is great and just what I have been waiting for. I feel the roll gain on my Air Tractor is too low and this will allow me to up the value.
One question - I also have the AR637T - can I update the firmware in that RX to change the frame rate on the AS3X channels to 22ms so it works with the older servos? If so how do I update the firmware it the stock AR637T? Please Please Please say there is a way to do this.
Great question Ted! In fact there is a update now to the AR630 and AR637T that adds the frame rate menu. 2.37.7 or higher :)
@@SpektrumRCvideos Thanks, I found and did the update to my AR637T last night and found that I was able to change the frame rate so I hope that will allow me to use this on a couple of my older planes.
I have a x 20. I love it. The only downside is the receiver. Spectrum has One of the best in receivers in the market. And that's why I'm wondering how come Spectrum has not developed a sbus for there receivers. The next step in technology, So that you have full control through one wire connection. And if not why?
Sbus in what form? For servos or to connect to a flight control? Our receivers have a SRXL2 port the we use for serial connections to flight controllers and it is open source code so that any third party can develop with it or into their products ;)

I don't want to use a orange receiver I want to stick with my Spectrum receivers, but lack of a sbus slot I'm using the orange receiver. Can I use the SRXL2? And is that set up easy? With one wire. I have NightTimber X - and DX8 - did the bind via switch on receiver - after powering up the plane the fight controls cycle twice (indicating SAFE mode) but no reactions to flight surfaces - can you see all the setting in AR637TA without upgrade
You can not see or change the settings until it is updated. When you test the surfaces do you throttle up at least once? This activates the system

I have a conscendo im flaperoning and need to to tell 637ta that ch 6 is other aileron. As3x and safe dont work on ch 6 ail servo now. All control surfaces work as they should sans ch 6 has less throw than ch 2. I switched wires to make sure it wasnt servo and it followed wire switch. Any help gratefully accepted Thanks.
Thankyou for this video, great info. Question. I have the AR637TA out of a Air Tractor and want to factory reset it to put it into my P-38. I have all 3 flight modes but going into forward programming I have gyro but not "other" using a NX8 transmitter. Is this because it is not unlocked? in gyro I have safe settings that's all . ??? confused.

The bluetooth dongle only works with AR636 receivers. The AR630 is only programmable via forward programming on Spektrum Transmitters

Nice video Tom, however, you totally skipped showing how to unluck with the programmer and that is what this video is supposed to be about.
What programmer are you referring to? If you mean the AS3X app for tablets, smart phones etc, I would like to let you know that the app does not work with the latest AS3X receivers. The PC app does work but only to update and change model presets. Any setup is done via the forward programming menu on your Spektrum Transmitter. Essentially the AS3X app is obsolete and only supports AR636 receivers. Hope that helps!
So I got ahead of myself and updated my reciever before saving the file. Am I screwed or is there hope for my reciever? Also, what's the advantage to making changes to the reciever? I'm removing the reciever from my badly beat up turbo timber evolution and installing it in a Apprentice. What changes (if any) should I make to the reciever?

Any reason why doing this doesn't work to unlock the ar637ta? Everything is up-to-date and with updated firmware and still doesnt unlock the ar637ta..
I would like to use the rudder channel on a Night Radian's AR631 receiver to control a lost model alarm or a set of flaps that I want to cut, but Channel 4 (rudder) on the receiver does not output a signal (I assume it is locked from the factory). How can I gain the use of the rudder channel since the rudder on this 3 channel plane is connected to the aileron channel pins? I did purchase the SPMA3065 USB programmer cable just for doing this. Channels 5 & 6 are being used for other purposes (5 for Safe and 6 for controlling additional LEDS (hint: HH really needs to include leading edge lights to be able to see the Night Radian nose on when coming in for a landing at night).
Any chance to use this with a DXS? The AR631 seems to need some forward programming DXS is not capable of. I managed to bind wit SAFE but no switch is reacting. Worked out of the box with a AeroScout.
Ok so i bought my plane PNP but they also sell the bnf versioon of it. I purchased an spektrum trasmitter finally and i would like to know if i can download all the preset settings and install them into the receiver? Any help would be appreciated. TIA
I did update my AR637ta, at first I was a bit cautios, would I brick the receiver or even loose all the factory settings for the 90mm Viper?. Before this, I did find and download the settings from HH:s cloudservice.. anyway, I perfomed the update only to find that the forward programming menu wasn´t there. Had to reset the reciever and put in a flightpack, as I had powered it via the USB port. No issues after powering on, all settings where left intact including Safe and AS3x gains. I also did a backup in case of, hopefully next flight will show if everything is ok too.
I put an AR 631 in a plane, and I’ve noticed the AS3X correction is reversed on the rudder. Is there a way I can correct that? Does anybody know, thanks.
Want to use my AR637TA in a couple other planes I have....DO I even have to worry about re-programming the forward programming. Can't I just reBind with my NX8 in another plane...and then make the servo changes and such, as I need, if needed at all???
That very much depends on the model, servos used, control throws etc. Theoretically you could... Personally I would not recommend doing this because if you miss one thing it could end badly.

So just to confirm , on a BNF model, I can unlock the receiver so I can put the ailerons on two separate channels. Are the gains/ gyro settings retained or do those get erased when you unlock it?
If I buy a AR630 or 631 off the shelf, do I need to do this to put the ailerons on two channels ?

I noticed in a lot of your videos you guys are using Mac computers.
But you still got to go to a PC in order to program your radios and receivers.
So you have to have two computers.
Something to think about for your programming tech guys
One option for Mac owners is running a windows emulator like Bootcamp.

When you do a back up of the receiver settings. Is it stored permanently or until you power off the transmitter?
Great question. It is stored permanently on the receiver. At least until you tell it to restore from back up again :)

So the AR630 after update cannot be programmed on the computer in the spektrum app? I have to use forward programming only?
I already asked the same question (whether these "TA" Receivers, after being updated, reprogrammed, "First Time Setup's, etc., etc., etc. in the Forward Programm of the Transmitters, still CANNOT be configured, etc., etc. , stc. in SPEKTRUM Programmer on PC...) not only to HORIZONHOBBY's own TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE but also in this Tutorial and in many others too, AND TO THIS DAY NOBODY HAS KNOWN - OR WANTED - TO REPLY..., WEIRD, isn't it?? ????
But you are absolutely right, IT IS ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT IN THESE CASES OF "UNLOCK(?!?!)" THE RECEIVERS "TA's" THE "SPEKTRUM PROGRAMMER on the PC IS OF NO USE, COMPLETELY USELESS, whatever ALL "TECHNICIANS(?!?!)" SAY!!!!!
PLEASE TELL customers that when they unlock their AR637TA they can no longer use the APP or their PC. I just watched 8 videos to find out about this. You can only use forward programming.
AR637T(or A version) receivers have never been able to use the app or pc programmer to program :/
@@SpektrumRCvideos I see that now but as our 3 town club's programming helper I thought it was because it was locked. I spent HOURS trying different ways to connect before discussing the AR637TA with your technical support. BTW Arron W was very knowledgeable and helpful.

If you would like to setup spoilerons then you will need to essentially setup the AS3X and SAFE from default. It will not work with the preset settings for the Habu SS.
Hey - If I connect usb programmer to AR630, I can import and export srm files, but not actually configure anything.

Hi Tom, I used the Spektrum Programmer and the SPMA3065 cable, as you described in the video, on the AR637TA in my Turbo Timber Evo. The software sees the AR637TA but doesn't give me the option to search for an update. I want to unlock the AR637TA, and per your video on unlocking this receiver, you recommend checking for an update first. So, what am I doing wrong? Thanks!
Also, in Forward Programming with the AR637TA, the Main Menu only shows "Gyro Settings". The "Other Settings" option doesn't appear. I have used Forward Programming to set up an AR630 previously.

Any of this receivers will not work with older TX. Registering my TX or RX with Spektrum no way. Bad enough we have to register with FAA and MAA.
If I buy a new AR630 receiver and want to set up AS3X for the Arrows Marlin, do I need to also buy the AS3X usb cable? Or can I bind with my NX6 radio and then set up the forward programming with that?
Hi Peter, no cable will be needed for setup! All done thru FP. The only reason you would need the USB cable is to register and update the receiver
What about the AR631 which is listed above. Did I miss something as I didn't see that it was mentioned. Is the setup the same?

Does the ar637ta servo ports need to be pointed towards the noes of the plane or the rear end of the plane. Thanks
In my Carbon Z 150T BNF it is installed servo ports to rear.
It has AR637TA Rx just as you have.
When you upgrade to the new firmware it does not erase the preset that the receiver came preinstalled with?

Hello, I have a DX18 (no speaker version) and have followed your directions but when I get to Forward Programing I don't see the option for "other settings". I only get "Gyro Settings", what do I need to do to see this option so I can go further into programing the heading hold, Gains, etc. As of right now, I don't have access to any of these features.
Does your computer recognize the programmer?

Does updating the firmware on the AR637TA allow for vario/barometer use or is this receiver not capable or those reading at all?
No it does not. The hardware for the vario simply does not exist on the A version.
What am I missing video is “how to unlock ar631ta” but doesn’t show how to unlock it.

I tried your method on connecting the 637T to a lipo but it doesn’t work. No light on the rx or anything. Tried both 2-3S lipos. Should mention it don’t work with the programmer cable either. “ it says when connected and it won’t open the settings.

No it does not.
Just received a new AR637T. I was able to use the PC programmer software to register the device to my account. It shows there is a firmware updat available but when I hit the update button I get the error: There was a problem communicating with the device (invalid state) any ideas? Thanks

How do I update or unlock a AR636A ?
If I have a ar637ta out of a crescendo (wich mounts upside down underneath) let's say I want to put this ar637ta now in a 1.1 trojan. Can I just simply update it? Or do I have to do a factory reset?
If you put the preset for the 1.1m trojan on the receiver you should have no issues. Just need to mount the receiver as it is in the BNF version of the plane. Hope that helps!
Unable to UNLOCK. I updated AR637TA to latest firmware: 2.38, also updated my DX6e transmitter to latest firmware. Once I connected AR637TA to my transmitter, 'Forward Programming' did not appear for me to select it (=roadblock!). Spektrum, please help me?, so I don't waste more hours of my life trying to unlock and disconnect SAFE mode in my new Conscendo?
Update to my above comment: Through process of elimination, I unbound my transmitter and rebound it, only then did 'Forward Programming' appear as an option. Note: Rebinding is not mentioned in video tutorial about updating receiver firmware.
I had to use a flight pack and power off and on the reciever once , and after that the menus incl forward programming was there.
got it to connect but i dont get the optional menu on my ar631 or is there another way
Unless the receiver is updated you will not see any additional menus
I take that resetting an ar636ta would transform it into an ar636t as if purchased new?
Not completely. The AR63T has a integrated altimeter where as the A versions do not. Hardware is slightly different
Ok.. I like that you can reset a 637A but... really wish you would still let the app configure the AS3X gains and priorities without having to factory reset it. Or, allow modifications to it in forward programming. Maybe an expert mode?
What is a annoying is...just got the Draco. In Safe, the Rudder doesn't have enough throw so ground steering is terrible. Also, there's always that elevator pitch up in safe. Take it out of safe and you aren't trimmed.
I had to learn how to at least tweak the rudder settings in an off the shelf 637.
Especially with the Draco that wants to climb and climb...I had to trim for safe (actually servo sub trim) for level at half throttle. Switch out of safe and no my elevator isn't trimmed. Frustrating I'm going to have to factory reset for that. But, glad I can at least get that menu after the firmware update.
Guys...love your products but...the windows app and USB cable was such an easy tool to use. Not everyone needs an IX12 or can afford it. Graphical interface is easy and clean. Easy to look at or copy other model configs. Leave well enough alone and keep forward programming too for those that want it.
Btw.... well done on the Draco. Its Mike Patey worthy. A blast to fly!

Sure I'm a little late but I had a similar issue when I setup my father's draco by downloading the file from spektrum. One file said mix and the other did not. I downloaded both just in case and tried the one with mix in the name first. I was noticing lack of rudder until also applying aileron in the direction I was trying to turn (hence the mix in the name), I wasn't a fan so I just rebound to the other file and found I had full rudder control with having to add aileron. Hope this helps someone before they start messing with programming. Let me know if you guys used the mix file from the website and if this makes sense please
Sabotage, After re reading your comment I'm not sure my first response is relevant but did you go into fmode setup and separate your trims from "common" to "fmode"? This will allow you to trim in each flight mode without affecting overall trims on other flight modes. DLG gliders use this feature so we can adjust trims on up to 8 different flight modes individually. Sorry so late lol

Got into raspberry Pi, 3D printing and tinkering stuff and have been hooked since! With it being Summer in Phx, it'll be like late October before I get back. But, when I do, might have a 3D plane to crash...I mean fly....with some other cool mods. Been playing with Microcontrollers which opens a lot of options. Very small and lightweight!
So yea, I did know about the modes but...just hadn't really got to deep into them. I'm sure I'll take another look. Thanks for helping though and I'll hang on to your note. Cheers!

Can you do this update through a transmitter like an IX 12 with and a Bluetooth dongle into the transmitter
The Bluetooth dongle is not compatible with the AR637T(A) or other Forward programmable receivers

Hi Tom, if you have a model on the AR677TA such as the timber evo when you do a backup can you restore it to a AR637T ?
Yes, if you back up the stock settings and then reset, you can reload the back up and the Timber settings will be reloaded. Hope that helps!

If you update it this way then select factory reset in forward programming it will essentially do what you are looking for

Not all the features, but the programmable features it will yes. It will not have a vario regardless of version, that is a hardware limitation.

Not exactly, if your factory reset the receiver and setup AS3X and SAFE from scratch you can get a mode like what you describe (bank angle limits but no return to level)
@@SpektrumRCvideos when I go to forward programming in my DX6 G2 or my DX9 BE menu, it shows AR631 2.38.04, but when I select Gyro settings, it says “Connection Failed”. I bought and hooked up the programmer, the program says that there are no firmware updates available. I can't do anything from within the software (FAIL!), and can only get the "Connection Failed" error from within the transmitter? What to do now? Thanks!
I fixed it. even though it said there was no software update, I applied the v2.38 Update again, since the forward programing said I had 2.38.04 and the program said 2.38.05 was the latest. Once it updated to 2.38.05, now the forward programing works as stated in the video!

No it is not required, really this is only so you can play with the AS3X gains if you feel like experimenting or flashing a different preset.
