I am starting roller hockey in a couple of weeks after playing ice hockey for 10+ years and the thing I'm really worried about transitioning is the stopping and the speed. What is the biggest thing to get used to when transitioning from ice to roller?
For me it was the stopping and the pants/legs part of wearing the gear. I started in inline and did it for 4 years. Then I didn't play since I finished HS and went to Ice hockey pick up and getting dressed took longer and the stopping on blades vs wheels was an entirely different feeling and that took a while to adjust to it. EDIT: at my 4th pick up game ON ICE I was offsides and the guys told me and I was confused and didn't know what it means since we didn't have offsides in Roller Hockey and I was out of it for some time. Then I needed to spend like 30 minutes learning offsides to not make that mistake again like a rookie.
There is a mistake here in ice hocley. You can be in the offensive zone if the puck is outside of it as long as you do not get any pass that get you offside, and this is why some players, before entering the zone, wait for their mate to get out of the offensive zone to get in again. Warch a couple of games and you will see. This is frequent.
I've played goalie in ice and inline since the mid 90's and I don't see any more breakaways in Inline than what I see in Ice. I suggest watching some NARCH games on RUclips to see how Inline flows different than ice. Players will have more room to work but that doesn't mean defensive coverage is lacking. If you've played ice hockey as a player you'll notice its almost the same game but faster and not as heavy. You don't have to worry about being on-side so you can be in the right place for a pass or shot. Players that cherry pick all game end up costing their team more goals than they get since they are leaving a man open that they should be covering. Hope that answers your question.
I play in the scottish and bipha hockey leagues and ive never played off side or icing. A lot of the time players in our leagues will just sit someone on net and dump it on net from the oppostie goal. Which sucks, speaking from a goalies point of view
I am digging these roller hockey vids! Keep it up fellas!
The official rules for tournaments such as NARCh say that there is no icing or offsides in any form.
xXCloudWolfXx Thanks for sharing this.
Thats how it is in my league too.
Can u do one on stopping?
Is an inline rink smaller?
Paul R most times yes I know where I play inline is smaller than a regulation ice rink
Like others have said, I've never seen icing, or offsides in roller.

Where I play roller there is no offsides or icing and there are the same three zones as ice hockey
Played inline for around 6 years

In france there's no icing and no offside in Roller Hockey...
JBD Thanks for sharing that tip!
So 2 forwards 2 defense or 3 forwards 1 defense
One forward, one cycle, offensive/pick carrying Dman and stay at home Dman is how I envision it
Theres no icing or offsides in roller hockey
I think most roller hockey in the US is played by FIRS rules. No offsides and no icing.
Extra08 Thank you for sharing this tip :)
Extra08 so people just end up cherry picking all day? I'm an ice hockey player that might be forced to go to inline

Extra08 it does, and in detail. I'll check out those games.

Chris Millar Thanks for sharing this.
Maybe it's just where I'm from but in any league I've ever played in it's been 5 on 5 no icing
Tyler Cunningham Thanks for sharing that tip! Where do you play?
Hockey Tutorial I'm from New York
Tyler Cunningham NYC? Because here in Buffalo we play 4 on 4 no icing or offsides
xXCloudWolfXx Long Island, we still have carry over offsides though.
Had no idea about the difference in off side. Ha that would have sucked if I played before watching.
