Hai, Victor-San, in the Shogun novel, Mariko-San was trained by The Jesuit Priesthood for years, as she was sequestered away for a time period, where, a Jesuit Priest educated her in both Portuguese and Latin. In the novel, many times, they switch back and forth between Portuguese and Latin, but Mariko says that Latin is so tiring. In the novel, many times, they switch back and forth between Portuguese and Latin, but Mariko says that Latin is so tiring. Even one of Lord Ishido's men spoke and understood Portuguese and both Mariko and Blackthorne had to watch their language around him, because Ishido's man understood. I hope that helps. If not, one of our resident Historians would be happy to explain more. Arigatogozaimasu. 👍
Thank you very much for the explanation; since I just watched the tv series without reading the novel I was unaware that the language issue was resolved therein Again, many thanks

Basically when ever they’re speaking English in this series they’re actually speaking Portuguese
Precisely, Reacted-San! Only a few instances does Blackthorne speak English in the novel, for the very reason that no one there speaks or knows English, but it was very seldom. And, at other times, Anjin-San will speak Latin also with Mariko-San, when there are others around that can understand Portuguese, as Lord Ishido had one man that understood them, and so, they spoke in Latin. Excellent comment. Arigatogozaimasu. @@Reacted1991 👍
In the book, Fujiko is plain at best. Not here.
Is this historically accurate?
I am not sure if the giving of a Consort in this scene is historically accurate or not. Perhaps one of our resident Japanese Historian subscribers can chime in and give insight. Shogun, the novel, was a historical fiction, so, not everything is going to be historically accurate, but it was an amazing novel, of just over 1200 pages. Arigato Gozaimashita.
Feudal Japan had a really twisted sense of morality and "honor" at times. Some of it I think was admirable, things like this however... no, not at all
Well she went into a Porn in her private life! How awful, right? But the few who keep hammering on that don’t say a thing about those go look at Porn because women pieces parts seem so intriguing. No demand no supply. Well her body was unclaimed by family! Well someone took care of her body. She was deceased. She didn’t know. Well she went penniless! OK who hasn’t in their life! 14 years ago I was penniless for a while. Mine came in 09 not 08 like others. Well she never recovered! Lots don’t. Since when should the personal lives of actors and actresses be held to a higher standard. Remember what they did right like great movies, a spectacular mini series. Judge not lest thee be judged.
The new version was a C too dark. Cosmo can’t hold a candle to Chamberlain as an actor the original version explained so much just in their dialogue
I have to say how underwhelmed i was with the latest version, the whole series was extremely superficial and bearing in mind the depth of detail in Clavells novel it merely skirted around the surface. The fact that the majority of the dialog was in Japanese merely papered over the cracks, i look forward to the 80s version being reshown and would definitely stand up to scrutiny. Totally a wasted opportunity
man honestly i think this scene was butchered in the remake
Hai, Reacted-San. I agree with you 100%. And the lack of real music with Shamisens, Japanese Bamboos playing is sorely missed. Arigato.
How so? Honest question.
@@theshogunchannel Yes, my friend... Not just this scene, but the entire 2024 ' remake '... I use the word ' remake ' generously... As far as I can tell so far, the one star in the 2024 version, is Moeka Hoshi as Fujiko.. Cutie !
Kid killers . Same in ww2 . I have been to japan . Most think they won the war . 😢
There only today sure to a point but still dumb way to look at the world
