I just subscribed to your channel. You saved me on a shooting last night. The assignment was as a photo assignment. I decided at last minute to shoot some video with my A71V. I’m a Sony Pro member. I have had some of their technical members helped. Yet a number of them go with this attitude, of not being so helpful. I told one of their Sony Pro technical members, I decided at last minute to shoot some video on this still photography assignment, Asking this one Sony pro technician I needed to know the basic ISO for my Sony A71V. This knucklehead told me Sony A71V doesn’t have a base ISO for the Sony A71V. I just brought the Sony FX30 to go along with my other Sony cameras. Like the A7111 & EV-10. Thank you!!
Thanks Michael. Spot on. It is confusing though that the camera comes out of the box with the AUTO ISO set as 12800 high base. This suggests that the camera's high base is 12800 as per the FX6
I liked the simplicity of your demonstration. I could of sworn Gerald undone said 2400 was base iso best for slog3. Hmmmm, time to look back and do my own test like yours. Thanks! I’m brand new to gamut shooting last month. Lol
Thank you for this informative video. I am looking for recommendations for the Base ISO settings for all the Picture Profiles. What recommendations do you have for the Base ISO settings for all of the 11 Picture Profiles for the Sony a7iv? Thank you!
this was a great explanation and super helpful as i dig into more of the a7iv. if i'm shooting low light in small bars (think dimly lit bar in a restaurant with random yellow lights) i guess i would try slog3 with 3200 for a cleaner video?
Honestly on the a7IV my strategy is generally to shoot for at least one stop of overexposure if shooting slog3, no matter what the lighting conditions - unless you want a lot of the image to be crushed down into black. That would mean that, for a dark bar, you’d probably be looking at something between ISO 6400 and ISO 12,800. And fortunately, the a7iv can produce an okay looking image up there in some conditions! The general wisdom I’ve absorbed for shooting slog (and my practical experience with it) is that you always want to be lowering your shadows in post, never boosting them, which is why people always talk about exposing “to the right.” Counterintuitively, in situations where you can’t control the light and you’re already shooting with your iris wide open, cranking your ISO can give you cleaner results than sticking to the second base and having to boost in post. Hope that makes sense.
@@JamieSandel thanks this is helpful, i've been tinkering with those settings but then also learning about the dual native iso (e.g. some higher isos actually make a cleaner image). good to know others in the same light thank u
Wow!!! Thanks a lot! Very usefull; i just bought the a7iv and i was just wondering what were the native isos of the various picture profiles!!! great job
Newbie, I have A7S3 & now A74… why does A74 not allow iso 100 in PP11? It only goes low as 125. Goes to 100 on A7S3 with all other same settings. Because diff sensor? (Assuming)
Hi, thanks to share your interesting video. I will have to use Sony A7 IV enough often in Africa. Do you think the Sony A7 IV will be sturdy enough to withstand the heat, dust and humidity? Thank you
I know a7iv has a good weather sealing but i heard few people complain about over heating. It will depend on how you are going to be using your camera.
I have a a7iii and there was a youtuber who gave the settings to be able to get the s cinetone look...but I will b upgrading to the a7iv soon as theres no dual iso plus slog 3 is pretty pointless to use on the a7iii
Thanks for the short and simple video! I just got my A7IV and it’s my first camera so I need to learn all this stuff 😅😂 I started with no PP, then I tried Slog3, now i’m gonna give S-Cinetone a shot! i’m a vlogger so I need something that can be edited quickly and Slog3 takes a little while on my MacBook Pro 2020
It’s so embarrassing that I’ve been shooting for a while and am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that (digital) ISO is not a fixed sensitivity level. Thanks for this vid.
What are the other native ISO of the other PP? I came from FS5 and I know the others well. Alister Chapman made an interesting video about that camera but there is still very little on the a7iv
@@MichaelYoungKim thank you for responding me, but i got this info from another reviewer, the total dynamic range is not change, it just shifted towards highlights or toward shadow
those are not because of dual native iso. there has no duan gain system in that camera. it is just noise reduction working. noise gets down and image soften.
Thanks , this is help me a lot .. but i had question , i got a rumored thats sony a7iv even on s-cinetone still had native iso on 3200 ? Did you ever try it ?
Thank you for this video. I’m very very new to video. Let’s say I’m outside shooting with a picture profile using Slog3. Are you saying I should shoot in ISO 800 with an ND filter perhaps ?
Im sure there is another iso that has better noise control but i am not sure, havent tested it yet. If my prediction correct, i believe it’s going to be same as the log, so double the base iso. So 125 x 2 = 250. But not 100% sure. 😕
Hi Michael, just stumbled upon your Sony A7IV videos and they have been super helpful! A question that I have and wasn't able to find answered among your videos is if I am looking to shoot in SLOG3, ISO 800, 24 fps, 1/50s, f1.4, and I'm shooting midday so it's quite sunny - would you go with a 2-5 or 6-9 stop VND filter? I saw your comparison video as well, but in that video your ISO was set to 100. Thank you so much in advance and keep up the great work!
Correct progression: 800, 1000, 3200 lol. I've been looking for this comparison. Tho what do you think is cleaner between 160 and 500 for S cinetone? Can't tell on RUclips but 200 is worse than 500. Thanks!
Great vid. However I'm concerning what if I need to pump up my ISO over 500 (second base ISO of S-cintone profile) to reach the right exposure (as I heard, S-cinetone just requires right exposure)? Will it introduce terrible noise? What ISO level will be the best for over 500? Sorry if the question bother you guys as I've jumped from Canon to Sony
Whatever ISO that is closest to the base ISO will look the best. So in your case anything closer to ISO500 will look the best and noise will get worse everything you go up more. Hope it makes sense. Thank you for watching.
Which picture profile do you shoot with?
PP11 all the way!
PP11
Pp8
pp6, pp11, pp9
Short, simple, clear, straight to the point... bravo !

this was awesome! also great to simplify the dual native ISOs as 2 stops apart, rather than just two sets of seemingly random numbers.
Glad it helped!

Yes different sensor has different base iso.
Fantastic video! Do you think it will be the same for the A6700 camera in S-Cinetone?
I cant really say it will but it will be a good starting point.
Very well explained! I thought the 12800 was also good for the a7iv though?
It’s definitely useable depending on the situation. But I wouldnt go to 12800 when shooting log.

No you are not. You are actually getting less dynamic range.
@@MichaelYoungKim thank you for responding me, but i got this info from another reviewer, the total dynamic range is not change, it just shifted towards highlights or toward shadow
That only applies when you are using cine ei mode.

noise gets down and image soften.
Just multiply your base ISO times 4. 800x4=3200 etc.
2:28 is it me or does iso 640 look better than 800? thanks for the vid
I believe it might look better because you are not getting the full dynamic range below 800 iso.
Good, because I was going nuts with others suggesting the base for Cinetone was 100...and it's NOT (can't get there on the new A7 IV)!

but i had question , i got a rumored thats sony a7iv even on s-cinetone still had native iso on 3200 ? Did you ever try it ?
I don't think that is true. I know the S-log 3 on A74 has second native iso 3200.
@@MichaelYoungKim soo PP11 or S-cinetone doesn't had native iso ?
@@nicolaussuryadharma Like i mentioned in the video they are 125 and 500.
What about the Slog3 ISO12,800? two stops after the 2nd base ISO3200? Is that the 3rd base ISO?
There is no third base iso. Iso 12800 is second base iso for fx3 and a7s3. A7iv and a7cii 2nd base iso is 3200.
Thank you for this video. I’m very very new to video. Let’s say I’m outside shooting with a picture profile using Slog3. Are you saying I should shoot in ISO 800 with an ND filter perhaps ?
Yes that is correct. If you are new to shooting video, I would recommend shooting in no pp or scinetone for easier workflow.
Any idea what it is for the 6600 for slog 3?
Sorry never owned a 6600. But if the 6600 has 8-bits I would recommend using slog2 than slog3.
Well done…thx👏👏👏👏👏👏
You are welcome 🙏🏼
Muito bom amigo. Parabens , sua explicação é the best
Does this dual ISO affect anything for photos?
Im sure there is another iso that has better noise control but i am not sure, havent tested it yet. If my prediction correct, i believe it’s going to be same as the log, so double the base iso. So 125 x 2 = 250. But not 100% sure. 😕
Thank you Michael, Do you happen to know if there is any difference in terms of DR between the 2 native ISO's? Thanks!
Looking at the DR chart from dxomark, the lower native ISO has better DR performance.
I am filming with custom setting of VV2. Does this mean I would use either ISO 100 or 400
깔끔한 정리네요!

thank yohu! what about hlg3?
Every since A7iv got 10 bit, I stopped using hlg so didn't really test it. Sorry :/
@@MichaelYoungKim hmm interesting, no much point of using HLG3 10bit ,if I have 10bit slog3?
@@0123456789jad most likely because slog3 will give u the most dynamic range.
I was on p11 , slog 3 , cinetone assist and at 8000 iso the grean was gone compared to 6400 iso
The same rule applies to Dual Base ISO photos as well?
Sony A7 IV (Dual Base ISO):
- No Pictures Profile 100 & 400
- S-Cinetone 125 & 500
- S-Log3 800 & 3200
