Re: the oar rights comment - they actually serve a very important purpose, and it has little to do with rowing ability. On wide smooth tailwaters like the Delaware where you are often head hunting pods of rising trout, the oar rights keep the oars vertical in the water while the boat is anchored. The vertical oar blades function like a rudder and keeps the boat from swaying widely side to side in the current. I've rowed with and without them, and it's no contest they work.
Love an old hyside! Bombproof metal values. Good call on the counter weighted oars. Cataract oars outdo heavy carlisles every time. I would also mention drybags like Bill's bags, extra gloves and a flip line.
sun is your rafts worst enemy. 303 is a great product. I also bought a medium size car cover at Canadian Tire (it was way cheaper then an actual boat cover), and popped a bunch of tarp grommets in it to allow rain water to drain out. I have a similar old raft (1994 NRS self bailing raft) so the rain water flows the holes in the cover and out the sides of my boat. I really like that roller bar and the tilt deck. My Buddy in Colorado has the roller on the side of his canopy to get rafts on top of his truck and it is the cats ass.
You can generally spot an inexperienced rower pretty quick when they dis oar-rights. You aren't supposed to row with them up against the oar-lock. You put them farther up the shaft towards the handle, so that when you let go of the oar it orients the blade vertically every time. This has two advantages. The first is that the blade is in a consistent orientation when you pick it back up so that it is ready for a stroke immediately. This is priceless in a tense situation. The second is that when anchored, the oars drop alongside the bow and act as a rudder, minimizing the amount the boat is swayed in the current.
I bought a outdoor car cover for my boat to keep the sun off when I am not using it. I had to punch some tarp grommets into it in various places to allow water to drain through when it rains
This video is great! Hey for a cup holder what I did was cut a short piece of PVC then made horizontal slits wide enough for a cam strap and duel use the strap to hold my dry box in case of a flip and beer
Put a little platform in the front like a helipad for a drone landing base. I know you are thinking how will I land it and when it lands on the pad it will fall off. Use velcro on the drone foot and it will stick give it a try, it would be the first.
Instead of nylon rope for the , "Oh Shit" line on the outside, I use one-inch nylon webbing. It's a little harder to rip a fly out of but it's easier on the hands for the sometimes non-fishing float with kids climbing in and out on a hot day. Love your videos. After 18 years of being a native calm floater/fisher on the Missouri River from Wolf Creek, Montana on down, I wish someone would do the, "How to Be A Good Guide" lecture at each put-in each day.
2 ideas on the beer can holders which you probable already know or seen but hey. L'il sucker koozie work on the dry box (don't know with all the stickers) also stick on the boat, my prefered beer holder is made by my friend Leo @ Montana Raft Frames u-bolts right on the frame in a convenient location. Also look at Leo's Rod Dog we helped design for our guide boats we're starting to run one on either side. And a Hiuge shout out to brilliant idea of the lock box always something with the shuttle keys!!!
First time rower. I’m trying to decide between a stream tech steelhead raft or a Blackfoot strike any recommendations? I will be using it in Oregon on the Rogue , Williamson, Umqua rivers. Thanks for the great videos I enjoy them.
Hey Ben! I'm trying to be get yuge too, but I had a question. In waters like the Rio Grande down in the SLV where its surrounded by private land, is it ever possible to solo raft that water? I dont think it gets too wild...
I’ve had two rafts and haven’t for two season and I feel naked. Mine were older but did exactly what I need weather fishing of mutiday fiver camping. Already in the market for a new one. I can’t live without it. Can’t stand being a bank maggot. In Alaska you gotta have a way to get away from tourists.
Cool video, question for you on oar length. I am setting my raft up to fish also I have a oar lock to oar lock width of 77" 16' boat. What size oar would you go with?
Love your videos, keep it up!! About the beer holder problem, just get one those old school foam beer koosies and slap some Velcro on the bottom. And boom just rip and sip. It works get for me down in the Louisiana. Or if you’re fancy try lilsucker.com

Great content. I happen to be rigging the same 1991 Hyside!

Not what I was looking for, but I am entertained. Color me a new subscriber!
Get one of those stiff foam coozies and glue it to a part near the rowing seat. Then you have a cup holder
Dude, you´re like the Bob Vila of Huge Fly Fisherman!
That is one of the best compliments I have ever received. Miss you pal!

I’ve got empty Kokanee’s in my boat too. Love it 👍
I’ve always wondered about that and now I know. Excellent content! Enjoy the illustrations you use to explain things. Keep it up 👍🏼

Awesome video.
Nice set up! You have a link for where you got your frame?
It’s a custom build from Downriver Equipment in Denver.
Great videos.

Huge!!! Awesome.
I want your boat.😊👍🏻
I can do this with a 14ft Jon boat, right?
Cool video, question for you on oar length. I am setting my raft up to fish also I have a oar lock to oar lock width of 77" 16' boat. What size oar would you go with?
Probably 10 ft oars, but that’s just a guess. Maybe cruise over to mountainbuzz.com and search the forums.
Love the content, keep it up.
Ubertrent 🍗🍗🍗
Hey Ben! I'm upgrading my raft setup to a 14ft raft. I'm curious: what are the dimensions of you snowmobile trailer. Thanks for your reply.
I have this same question Rudy. What did you go with?
@@masonkornelis I am going to go with a utility trailer. I plan to modify it to suit my needs...maybe I should make a video when I start the build?
video with the oar thing.....?
I’ve been on that raft
Where are the rubber worms

Yeah, ill sub this. good vid. huge thanks.
¡¡Hola me llamo Ben soy un pescador grande!!
You have a family?! She must have lost a HUGE bet.
She just wants my money.
You look like a normal size fly fisherman to me
That key safe? About a minute for the Lock Picking Lawyer, about four minutes for me to get through. Upgrade that POS.
It's probably a better alternative to leaving it in the gas cap or on top of the front tire, which is normal for the Rocky Mtn West.
Can't find your counter weight video.... also let's see them flooooors
I think there are probably some excellent tips in this video but the way it’s cut I’m too ADD to pay attention :(
Your wrong about oar locks but the rest of the vid is good.
Drinking them kokanees huh? 😂
Mike Vincent I love all cheap beers. Except Hamm’s. 🤮
One trip to Lethbridge and he's hooked on Canadian beer :) Great video!
@@HugeFlyFisherman Hamm's straight taste like skunk I totally agree with you
Haha “ass chest”
Nice. I never thought of it like that.
kokanees eh
Lol
Make or buy you fried chicken
Publix Chicken or nothing
James Davis oh I’m well aware. Nearest Publix is 1,473 miles away. Doing the best I can over here.
@@HugeFlyFisherman nearest one to ketchikan is 6000 😔
