Ricky Jay. The man devoted his life to what he loved: the art of illusion, and bringing a child-like sense of wonder to his audiences. A master craftsman, historian, consumate professional, and trickster. His like shall not pass this way again.
I remember watching a skit of people making fun of that and it showed a guy casually skimming through the magazine section at the store and by the time he was finished there was a huge pile of those things at his feet. lol

In truth, today all that is needed is a computer, but there is a beauty and elegance to the Written word and the Physical and Historical Record of it. The smell of an old book, how it feels in the hand, the sounds it makes. It’s absolutely beautiful; sensations that cannot be replaced.

Great video and I’m a Ricky Jay fan but if he tried that at my grammar school back in the day the head librarian would have said, “if you don’t shut up I’m going to make YOU disappear, Mr. Magician”.
I was so sad when I had to switch my reading from real books to ebooks. 😢 Nothing like a physical book. My life style became so packed and hasty and I barely had time for reading, ebooks became more practical as I read in a dark room in bed at night before I drift to sleep.

Ricky Jay performs these tricks and a captivating monologue (re: history of the cups and balls) in The X-Files: Season 7, Episode 8 *"The Amazing Maleeni"* and there's another ASMR goodie in that episode where Jonathan Levit does a monologue while demonstrating a coin sleight of hand on a table. Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad) was one of the writers of this episode from 2000. It's streamable on Hulu.
I need to investigate this. Hardly ever hear anyone talk about the X-Files these days. Sidenote: Vince is an incredible writer. I thought that Better Call Saul was gonna be a big spinoff flop but I fell in love with it. I find myself glued to Mike when he's onscreen. He has the most boring face but I love his character. Have you watched BB and/or BCS?
@@ASMRLoopz Yes I watched BB because of Gilligan and also because I enjoyed both Cranston and Paul in the X-Files they appeared in, which is apparently why VC cast them in BB. Even Raymond Cruz (Tuco) was from one of my favorite X-Files. When I heard about Better Call Saul, I also expected a lame spinoff show and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a standalone show with a plot and character arc all its own.
anyone else get slightly annoyed that this interviewer has one of the most interesting ppl ever in front of him, and when he finally chimes in with a question he asks something that Ricky has already basically answered throughout the entire clip? even a "what is your favorite book that isn't in here but should be" would have brought up some new input from Ricky rather than repeated information

Looks like he flicks through multiple pages at once, not page to page. The blowing doesn't do anything, just a distraction. Also look at the pages of the book, they are a strange shape. He probably can choose which pages he wants to flick to based on where he puts his finger.
Notice that the 1st time he flicks from the middle, the next time further along, and the last time at the bottom. I'm guessing there are some kind of tabs on the pages that we can't see clearly. The blowing provides a pause so that the shift in thumb position isn't so obvious.
