YES!! a Superior Drummer AND Slate Digital user. Great to find you. My band often covers songs and I go through a similar process of trying to match drum sounds - how do you start in finding the right kick and snare stack to build, and even which Library to use (e.g. Progressive Foundry in this one) with so many options? Do you just run through all the samples and find something close? Do you research the original recording? I can spend days trying to do so, and sometimes get no where - part of the challenge being, as you demonstrate, once you've done the processing on the kit and instruments the end result is often very different than the original SDX sound. Nice job all around, hope you post more of these mix breakdowns.
Hey mate, thanks for the kind words and taking such an interest! Fair bit to unpack here, so let's go! FInding the right drum sound for a song has come after just playing around with so many superior drummer tones over the years and just kind of getting to know each library second hand. For example, I mix a lot of drum projects like this and also play e-drums myself so over time, I can kind of start to know what each drum sounds like and what song it'll fit in. You're absolutely right as well. Sometimes the mixed tone is a lot different to the raw sound, so it's not always easy to know what the final tone will sound like when you're just going through each drum one by one. Sometimes I'll play around with a tone and realise, "hey, that would actually fit pretty good in such and such a song" and just move the tone across to another project and see how it goes. It's a lot of trial and error and experimentation but I enjoy it since I enjoy drums and mixing drums so much. Thanks again for the kind comments. It's great motivation to keep going and hopefully I'll pull my finger out and record another mix breakdown soon!
@@joelkelly3225 awesome - thanks for the reply. Your mix breakdown has helped me a lot with a current project (which is not at all Nirvana related - but even just the simple guidance on leveraging the different slate VMR and INF EQ settings per track). Subscribed and look forward to seeing more.
Great Video! Thank you Joel! Do you know the Video of "Magic Jones" in which he compares the Mixes of Andy Wallace vs. Butch Vig? It`s very recommendable too!
Thanks mate! I have seen a video comparing the two mixes. It's very interesting that's for sure. I lean towards the Andy Wallace mix. Just personal preference.
interesting stuff, only here to see what is capable with the software, im a bedroom guitarist that will eventually have to add drums to something im working on. I have BFD3 drums but having trouble reinstalling it from its USB
Hey man. Nice video. I have the base set of SD3. I'm guessing to have access to those nice room mics and certain drums you've used, I would need to get an expansion of some kind? How many are worth getting you think? Is the base set good enough for you?
Yeah these drums are from the progressive foundry sdx so you'd need that expansion if you wanted this type of sound. The core library from SD3 is pretty amazing and has a wide range of drums that you can get all kinds of sounds out of. I'm not the boggest fan of the cymbals, but they're not terrible by any means. The shells are awesome, but they need a lot of processing since they're all raw samples (which I love). My advice is to try and take the core library as far as you can and once you find yourself getting a bit over the same sound, then look to expand into other libraries.
What works for me is I tracked the original drums into midi, then outputted each mic from superior drummer to its own track in my daw then mixed from there.
No need to apologise, of course the original drums sound better. I'm a dude at home with a copy of superior drummer vs Dave Grohl smashing a beautifully recorded drum kit that's then been professionally mixed.
you should totally do more of this, it’s insanely helpful
Thanks so much mate. Hopefully soon.
it'd be awesome to see this breakdown for one of the Smashing Pumpkin videos you have! insanely helpful video man! cheers from Chile
Awesome sound engineering, nice job!
I just love that you mix in Reaper. Big ups!
Thanks mate! Can't imagine my life without Reaper!
absolutely killer man!!!

Espectaculaaar. Saludos desde Peru
Really great! Do you know any EZX that's close to the progressive foundry SDX?
There's a Progressive Foundry EZX!

Awesome video! Please do some In Utero drums. Congrats for the tone.
Thanks mate! I've tried some In Utero drums since this video - they're annoyingly hard to replicate with SD3.
@@joelkelly3225 Use the Decades SD3 kit. It gets you there
@@Jayrawk Thanks mate, don't have that SDX yet but if I ever get it, I'll give the Utero tone a crack.

There's pretty much endless possibilities with the software as far as virtual drums are concerned.
Excellent reproduction! Do you do EZdrummer mixes too? Would love to see your production skills using that software. 🤘
Thanks mate! I don't own EZdrummer so I just use SD3 \m/
Cool! The extra snare was the tama brass bell from the metal machine? Cheers
SD3 core library mate. Rimshot articulation.

Did you plot each instrument using midi and the keyboard roll? and is it best to put each instrument snare, hi hat, kick etc on a separate track?
What works for me is I tracked the original drums into midi, then outputted each mic from superior drummer to its own track in my daw then mixed from there.
what library are you using? I could not get that sorry
Progressive Foundry SDX
I'm glad you changed the channel name, the last one was a little generic.
Thought it was time for a more personal touch
Sorry but the original drums sound better to me. I find the snare and the hihat reveals it's a drum machine!
