Nobody could like Corporal Lawrence. He was a plain man, average height, average build, bland of voice and action. He tended to stare a beat or two longer than was acceptable at people. He rarely slept as well, and bunkmates said he would mumble in his sleep almost constantly. But it all got much worse when the young man fell into a mysterious black hole filled with slime and dirt. This mysterious hole sent Corporal Lawrence into spiral, forever changing him into menacing SCP-106, now referred to as "The Old Man".

Realistically in ww1 if a soldier in the group had no paper work he would be assumed to be a spy, this has happened before
I thought the same, they would probably try him, and sentence him to death for espionage

@@void9309 Corporal Lawrence himself is implied to be anomalous because there's no record of his existence; he just appeared in the trench one day with absolutely no paper trail, and behaved in an odd, unsettling, vaguely supernatural fashion.
The black pit and the corrupting substance within is its own anomaly, able to destroy the German trench long before Lawrence fell into it and the two became one entity.

In the discussion thread for this tale on the wiki, one person theorized that the anomaly Corporal Lawrence fell into also had temporal stuff going on, and started affecting him even before he fell into it, possibly to do with 106's ability to control time within his dimension. That said, there are 3-4 super popular origin stories for 106, all utterly contradictory and incompatible, so any interpretation is more than fine.
You know, I love scp backstorys, because if you look at it at lest 5 interpretations could be canon. Before this, I just thought he was some normal dude, and over time he rotted or something, and after a while we got the creepy goopy uncle Lawrence we have.
Okay now I get it, Corporal Laurence was an anomalous individual who carried with them a mist of a relatively minor ailment, with a weird knack of being hard to track down due to the lack of paper trails. His behavior rather peculiar behavior may also be linked to his affliction.
But whatever the black sludge was reacted to his anomaly and super charged it. Making him a dangerously unstable individual who carried with them a thick fog of decay with them. Maybe not so much as enhancing Laurence’s anomaly but the entirety of his being as it seems he became a very exaggerated version of himself. Like a negative stat multiplier.
I wrote this down for myself because I’ve heard and read this story before but I wasn’t able to follow along as well as I wish I could.
Yes, I agree. I think he was supposedly "destined" either way to become the Old Man, either through some cosmic force, via reincarnation or by pure accident. Considering he always had that weird aura of being "off" and just appearing out of nowhere.

I love the fact that the artist used a literal torch, and not a torch as in a flashlight. This encompasses my childhood of misunderstanding Douglas Adams books and thinking that people in the late nineties were using archaic forms of lighting.

Well, from what I understand, he's the one who seems to be "balding" with lone strands of hair being visible under his helmet.
Or they could’ve made each character unique or at least make the main character have more detail while the others could’ve had the same amount of detail as they do right now.

The whole point was that he was supposed to not stand out. He was bland and normal, to the eye. It was the unexplainable experience of him that was eerie, something not summed up so easily by an appearance in this instance.

I want to like this comment, but I don’t know if I can.
The theory is either he:
A nobody that illegally joined the WW 1 as a soldier because he has nothing left, maybe homeless or whatnot. Then he fell into the hole, if needed to explained the hole could be a crocodile pit (its a term) for a hole where soldier would piles bodies in it to rot together. So it might be the case of paranormal disease/bacteria.
Or from everyone assumption, the corporal is actually extra dimensional being that can use dimensional ability and has decided to studying normal human in WW1, but then slide into that pit and become a whole other being.
He showed no anomalous properties prior to falling into the hole, so I think it's the latter. It's entirely possible his paperwork was lost, though.
He was either an illegal soldier who joined because people found out he was a pedophile (It's heavily implied 106 is a Pedophile, he says names of children and likes especially to take children into his dimension, attracted to children's screams of horror etc) and had nothing to lose.
Or he was a German spy who sneaked into the battalion.
He had no paperwork... If this was real he would've been tortured and interrogated for hours and then killed or thrown in prison as a spy.

ive seen the one your on about, its a fake the real photo is from cambrai of some medics doing field dressing in a freshly captured trench, the actual photo features him smiling as while sat down taking a break as his squadmates dug to connect transport trenches in 1916. it sucks to break it too you but the man isnt shell shocked

sources for this is my time working at the royal armoury museum in Leeds as a volunteer i got to speak with a gentleman who was a descendant of the famous man showed me the actual photo of them ( if memory serves me right he was the equivalent of a royal engineer )
I believe that picture is part of another bigger picture where he's being treated for injuries, maybe he's smiling because of that, but its probably shell shock
Fun fact: cpl "Lawrence" on the thumbnail is actually the picture of a man suffering from a condition called Shellshock. This Shellshock condition would arise is soldiers due to a mental breakdown from the anxiety caused by enemy mortar barrages day and night.

my only complaint on this story is that Lawrence seemed to be anomalous or suspicious even before the event, not being on any transfer or birth records, like he just appeared out of thin air. Think it'd be neat if he was just a normal person beforehand, binding to the sludge when he fell in, and taking control of it, something that could happen to anyone.

The picture to this one, was heavily inspired from a real image of a soldier in WW1.. he’d either been affected by gas, or hit close with an explosion.. but either way it left him with the sinister appearing smile.

If you want a moment of existential fear, a weirdly scary thing to realize is that he's still aging like a person. This terrifyingly strange and deadly creature, this personification of sadistic love who revels in the fear in and eventually death of friend, for and stranger alike, is fallible to time. Once he was young, now he is old and decrepit. Literally now refered to as "The Old Man", his body shows he is as old as you'd expect, aging as naturally as anyone else. This means that in all likelihood, he will die, his anomolous body failing as naturally as any man.
I know it's strange but I really do think that one of the only things scarier than 106 himself is that that even a monster like him can ultimately be made humbled by the passing of time.
That makes him less scary to me tbh
