    • @Verlopil

      It's a great musical performance, but I really dislike it. That was supposed to be a tribute to George Harrison and Prince made it all about himself because he felt his guitar playing was snubbed by the musical establishment. I'm a huge Prince fan but that was in poor taste IMO.

    • @oskarobit
      @oskarobit 5 месяцев назад +2

      He often threw away his guitars and basses. At the R'n'R Hall of Fame a crew member grabbed it. Check out the “Director's Cut: ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ - Prince, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne & Dhani Harrison”.

    • @oskarobit
      @oskarobit 5 месяцев назад +4

      @@Verlopil Prince's philosophy was: if you can't do something new, original or different with other people's songs, don't play them.
      And thanks to Prince, that tribute went from boring to memorable.
      The original soloist, Eric Clapton, had nothing to say about it, so... On the contrary, Clapton was a fan of Prince. When P. passed away, EC said, “I'm so sad about the death of Prince, he was a true genius, and a huge inspiration for me, in a very real way, /// In the '80s, I was out on the road in a massive downward spiral with drink and drugs, I saw Purple Rain in a cinema in Canada, I had no idea who he was, it was like a bolt of lightning!”.
      By the way, Prince discovered the Beatles late, in the Purple Rain era, and became an absolute fan; you can feel that on the album “Around The World In A Day”.

      @@Skeezer66
      Dear Skeezer: I wasn't commenting on the fickle nature of "some" people who, (at the time) were disturbed by the possibility of someone they admired not being heterosexual. I felt that it was shallow-minded then; and,I feel that it's shallow-minded now.
      I was speaking on the reality of radio stations being very much segregated in 1978, when Prince's first album appeared.
      White America, (there...I said it) were very much unaware of Prince, because he was ONLY being played on non-white stations. And,(at that time) White America STILL lagged behind Blacks in terms of what was topical, culturally cutting-edge; and..."cool".
      "Coolness" does not come from the center of a culture.
      It comes from the margins;
      the outskirts; the "borders",
      That's why something that is new, risky and perhaps, "dangerous" is STILL considered "edgy". Black culture was always considered "edgy"--because it contained elements of risk. This was true with the blues, jazz, rock, hip-hop--and whatever else the future may bring.
      So no...my commentary, (unlike yours) had nothing to do with Prince's perceived sexuality.
      It had everything to do with White America's ever present desire, (even now!!) to exercise as much control as it possibly can; over any and everything.
      No matter what the cost; to "them"; or...to "us".
      (I apologize for the rant; but, I need to be clear about what I'm commenting on.)

    • @Skeezer66
      @Skeezer66 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@possumslim5542 I understand the need to rant, but let me be clear, all the controversies, music, race, and serial preferences, were all shared in the black community. We knew part of the music, but many people wondered if he was biracial (and his parents in Purple Rain didn't help), everything about him was a mystery, just as I'm sure he liked it. Little Red Corvette was his rock station breakthrough but was mostly ignored by black radio. He was a wizard that wanted to be what he was, totally unique.

    This song was released in 1981 when Prince was still establishing himself in the music world, becoming more noticed by the public and the media, but not yet a superstar. That would come a few years later with Purple Rain. The lyrics are indeed a dig at the media and his critics, who he grew tired of asking him personal questions about such things as his sexuality, religious beliefs and racial background. As a consequence he shunned the press for several years, refused to give interviews or reveal private information. Being out of the spotlight so much offstage may have actually helped his career as it built a mystique about his character and he became an enigmatic recluse dedicated to his music avoiding the glare of public attention unlike most other superstars.

    Prince is top tier musical genius!! PLEASE consider his sultry-funk hit with miss Sheila E - "EROTIC CITY" - the Long Version - it's nasty and y'all will love it!! Great beat, sexy lyrics - to which were played "as is" on the radio because Prince sang a certain word one way and Sheila E. insisted on saying "funk" instead - so with the lyrics overlayed it's hard to distinguish just what they were saying - but we knew what they were saying... LOL - keep smiling y'all!!

    Prince is an incredible guitarist. Didn't grow up a fan but, totally respected his talent.When I saw him live, his playing was really the feature of the show; played several extended solos. Feel very lucky to have seen him, cuz he died soon after that. If you haven't seen him on the George Harrison concert, you've gotta check it out: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

    I remember the first time hearing prince in the late 70’s/early 80’s as a teenager. All my friends were blown away at how good and different sounding/looking he was. Couldn’t get enough. Ironically, many people that probably never heard his music wanted to ban or censor him, since he was pushing envelopes that people didn’t want opened. We knew genius when we first heard him, and now looking back, time has proven those early naysayers wrong and Prince right as a true creative trendsetting artist. RIP PRINCE

    Yes, his keyboard player went by the name, The Doctor. He dress that way ( in some form) every video. He is 1 of the members that followed Prince with all his bands. When it was just Prince like this band, the Revolution (Purple Rain era) NPG New Power Generation. The Doctor was with him through out all the different bands.

    Still amazing at age 20(ish) that he played every instrument of that song, wrote it, sang it on his own. He might've had a sound engineer at that point, but basically, it was him in a recording studio 24/7 churning out songs - the ENTIRE songs.

    Don’t let the band in the video fool you… Prince wrote, performed and produced everything on this song. At this time the band was for live performances. Album version he chants lords prayer during the breakdown. Amber you were spot on… it was personal and the media was asking asinine questions. Check out his band he hand picked them to ensure diversity and musicianship. He was just as much a philanthropist as he was a musical savant. Check out more of his non-love music. Very concerned with humanity and our future. ❤
