  • In this video, I share my entire process of creating an acrylic portrait in my sketchbook.
    1. Start with a basic sketch of my subject.
    2. Spray the drawing with workable fixative.
    3. Add a layer of clear gesso (to stop the paper from absorbing you acrylic paint).
    4. Mix your paints.
    5. Begin your painting.

    i think this is my favorite acrylic painting tutorial ive seen! ive been a digital artist for years, so i really struggle with wrapping my head around the process of painting. my first instinct is to glob down an even coat of a midtone color, which always winds up just blotting out my sketch because acrylics are so opaque. it didn't occur to me to start with a smaller brush and paint in shadows first. thank you!

    Great video, many thanks! Acrylic is a great medium for producing nice sketchbook studies such as the one in the video. It is almost always the go-to medium for under painting in more formal work. However I would argue that oils are the medium for the serious portrait artist after the acrylic under painting, particularly utilising the basic Zorn palette. This does not detract from the scope of this video, however. Love to see more of your work in other YT releases.

    I just found your channel through another of your portrait videos & wow!!! Just watching your process is so inspiring and helpful. And what a great tip about the gesso. I haven't painted much before but every time I've tried acrylics, I've been using a sketchbook without gesso, and it's nearly impossible! How could I have missed that tip for so long? Anyway I love the look of your paintings, how they're realistic and have so much movement in them... like the finished pieces still have the energy of a sketch, which is what I'd love for my art to be like! Raelis Vasquez So does that mean you started and finished this in one day? I absolutely love the way it turned out! ❤️
      Apologies, this is a long comment 😬
      I’ve been painting for about 3 years, as a hobby. Everything I know I’ve learned from watching RUclips clips. I really enjoy it. I love how each of my paintings gets better and better. So much so, I’ve been asked to paint a portrait for someone. Up until this point, I’ve never painted people, and that’s purely because I can’t stand doing an average job at something and people are too complicated!
      It’s fair to say that I’m struggling quite a bit!
      Would you recommend when painting in the skin tone that it gets done in one sitting? Is there a secret weapon to use when trying to work wet paint into dry? I don’t always get a lot of time to myself to paint it all at once, I’ll normally do it over a few days, weeks, even months. Lol

    Sorry if this was asked b4! Can i use gesso on my pencil sketch without spraying fixative or is that a needed step?

    • @raelis_vasquez
      @raelis_vasquez  3 года назад

      Hey, No worries. And yes you can. The pencil wont even show up. It may smudge a little but thats not an issue at all. I rarely use fixative unless I am only drawing. with painting it isnt needed

      Hey I let it dry completely before painting. Sometimes I spray water on the pay while I work

    my BIGGEST problem when it comes to acrylic is that it dries so quickly!! Therefore I'm NEVER able to blend my colours properly!!

    • @raelis_vasquez
      @raelis_vasquez  4 года назад +4

      If you pay close attention, I never blended any color. It looks better when it isnt blended. I just use smaller brushes in areas that I need to

      Thank you so much. To be honest, I dont even know what paper this is. This is just my sketchbook. It was super cheap from Michaels. As long as its drawing paper and not sketchbook paper, and you arent using too much water, you should be just fine.

    • @raelis_vasquez

      Lol nope, that just how acrylic is. It always drying super fast. Keeps you on your toes lol. Super annoying but I recommend using a retarder if you’d like. Or just keep your paints damp by at spraying it with water
