The initial firing up of your grill is an important first step on maintaining your Traeger. Watch this video on how to fire it up the first time to get rid of manufacturing oils from your grill and ensure a great Traeger experience.
In this video we take you through the 10 initial steps required before using your Traeger Grill for the first time.
Step 1: Remove the porcelain-coated grill grates, grease drain pan, and heat baffle from the inside of the grill.
Step 2: With the switch in the OFF (O) position, plug the power cord into an appropriate grounded electrical outlet.
Step 3: Make sure there are no foreign objects in the auger. Turn the switch ON (I) and the temperature dial to SMOKE. Make sure the auger is turning (inside the pellet hopper).
Step 4: Check that there is air movement from the draft inducer fan by placing your fingers over the firepot. If the hot rod is getting hot, it will turn red. CAUTION! Do not touch the hot rod. Turn the temperature dial to SHUT DOWN CYCLE.
Step 5: Fill the hopper with Traeger Hardwood Pellets and turn the temperature dial to HIGH.
Step 6: When the pellets begin to fall into the firepot, turn the temperature dial to SHUT DOWN CYCLE to reset the hot rod. Then with pellets still in the firepot, turn the temperature dial back to SMOKE.
Step 7: When flames start coming out of the firepot, turn the temperature dial to SHUT DOWN CYCLE and switch to OFF. Let the grill cool down.
Step 8: Now you’re ready to place the heat baffle, grease drain pan,
and porcelain-coated grill grates back into the grill.
Step 9: With the door open, turn the switch ON (I) and the temperature dial to SMOKE. In about 2 minutes, the pellets will ignite and whitish-gray smoke will come out of the grill. After the pellets have ignited, close the door and turn the temperature
dial to any cooking setting desired.
Step 10: Before using your grill for the first time, it will need to be seasoned. Turn the temperature dial to HIGH and let run for 45 minutes with the door closed. This is a great time to grab a six-pack, if you haven’t already.

The only thing i was wondering around step 6 turning the smoker from high to shut down cycle then turn back to smoke what’s the time duration between. This question would be relevant where i switch the dial. Love My Traeger good video.
@@brianjohnson6057 until the smoker is cooled down

@@MrOffshoot has purchased one?
We want you to enjoy the grill and to know how to use it.
@@MrOffshoot Sorry, I don't understand your question.
If I get a used one from someone who didn’t use it very much should I still do this method just in case they didn’t?
Yes, @jeffa2483 - I would for sure!
Thanks for the video! Made this simple.
Your welcome. So hope that you're getting one today.
Hi I am stupid and didn’t watch a video before and just put my pellet in auger and turned on now it won’t even get hot what my next step to get it working . Do u I need to empty auger and then start over . The grill was never used but it from a older lady . The inside was new just left outside on pourch covered
Very helpful! Made a delicious turkey, kudos to you and Mom enjoyed it
So Glad you like it.
It's so easy if you follow step-by-step I did it with my Traeger grill just now
Nice work!
Do most of them come with instructions that are easy to follow?
Those are some instructions for us I tell ya.
how long does it take for the pellets to drop?
Why would you not touch the red hot rod?
It could burn you severely.
Imagine being the boomer that took that literally 😂
Thanks extremely useful. Will certainly share video content with my good friends.
Thanks so much!
Very impressive
Legend
Amazing.
Thank you! Cheers!
how long do i suppose to leave it at any desired temperature before i put it on High?
Just until it is hot enough to use.
They show an upper rack, but they don’t come with one. It’s a separate purchase. Nice job Traeger.
Hi Bob, thanks for watching
My baffle and drain pan were covered in grease when I bought it from the store. Is this normal?
It can be normal yes a light coating of oil will keep these units from rusting
So what is the shut down cycle for?
This allows the remaining pellets in the firepot to get burned up. Then the fan cools everything down.
Checklist:
-Traeger
-pallets
-6 pack lol
Got it!
How much are the pellets
How much are the pellets by
The manual suggests the same
@@sarahmoore9376 18lb bag runs for about $18. Home depot gives you a discount if you buy 4 or more. $15.00 in bulk
My pro 22 didn’t come with a grate on the hopper, is that a issue?
same any issues u had or just filled it anyways?
@@hipshothippietv2099 so far, no issues at all
What about coating the inside with an oil, like you would do for a smoker? Is that necessary?
Not necessary, the wood pellets season it. When you cook your meats it will season it enough.
Do you have to do that every time you want to cook?
Can you just turn it on high as soon as you are ready to cook
Hi, It is just for the first time cook.
@@BbqspitrotisseriesAu Ok, great.
Just the first time.
What if you didn't do steps 1-8 and only did step 9. Because I have already put pellets in and did the 45 min seasoning. Can I still cook on it or what do I do?
Hi Clark. All good to go ahead and cook
BBQ Spit Rotisseries okay thank you. What was the point of the first 9 steps anyways?
Those are the steps Traeger has set up. It is mainly to ensure you assemble correctly and ensure everything is working as expected.
Do you have to season w the pellets or without?
Art 'Dutch' Willemse you season it with pellets
Now looking back, knowing how the grill works, that was a pretty dumb question of me LoL
Engagement algorithm!
Appreciate your time watching our video. Cheers!
Please read!
At the end of step 7, once you turn the dial to Shut Off Cycle. DO NOT TURN THE POWER OFF JUST YET. Let it be in the SOC for 10 MINUTES. Then turn the POWER OFF. Follow the necessary after that. Happy cooking everyone.
Ok, thank you.
Wat does SOC MEAN
@@ebonyailsworth I think they meant sdc, for shutdown cycle.
Yes very important
Wow wish my grill had the burner in the freaking middle !
The treager I have looks exactly the same
Except my dam burner is all the way on the left
Right next to the pallet dispenser
Time for an upgrade?
Step seven error code. And auger stops I’m going back to charcoal
So it’s an outdoor electrical oven.
Pretty much. Expect you get to put wood pellets in it
Except
Wait, wtf. All those steps just to get the traeger ready to smoke something? Why can’t you turn it on and turn the dial to “smoke”?
From what I understand it's only for the "first time", to make sure everything is fine.
WHAT IF THE POT DOESN'T START TURNING RED
The pot doesn't turn red. Just the small rod under the auger.
Even then, the rod doesn't always turn red. Just continue to follow the steps anyway; you should quickly see smoke and fire. If you don't, then there's a problem.
The rod didn't ever turn red for me. But we got plenty of smoke and later fire. And it did the highest temp no problem.
Didn’t know it was electric .! Kind of disappointing
Seems like a lot of steps to do compared to just heat and cook.
Why all these steps
Hi Thanks for watching.
I hate the damn thing
The wife wasted a thousand dollars!!
Why is that?
Traegers are awesome. You obviously don't know how to use it cause they are super simple...
@@mcdmn717 So easy!!
A Bradley will really kindle your hatred then.
If you bought a traeger grill return it before using. there is no warranty unless you are willing to repair it yourself. made in china withe cheap parts and labor. you have been warned.
