    Lol.
    During my secondary school years, it became kind of a running gag amongst a couple of friends. As soon as the radio played a Robert Palmer song, we shouted "F[...] Robert Palmer! F[...] rock 'n' roll!" And then we laughed and had a beer.... or just a cup of tea. 😉

    Thanks for covering this brilliant track from the cure. They had a unique sound and have always been great live. I love the way the piece starts with each track being slowly added. Interestingly this would never be released today since streaming services insist on hitting the vocals within 20 seconds or so. Thanks to you for your intelligent and natural commentary on the track.

    One of my all time fav band. Side note. Earlier in the Year our Australian broadcasting Radio Channel. ABC. Had a casual competition for top bands voted by the listeners. Pitting bands with same first letter. So Cure went up against Cold chisel. Then voted fav again by the Listeners. The Aussie listeners voted The cure as their fav. I was super happy.

    Am I the only one who thinks, by a huge margin, that this is their best and my favorite song? Glad I heard a few years later because I probably wouldn't have liked it when it came out. I was a huge rocker and just getting into music, I was locked into it and out of anything else. Great stuff.

      Fascination street, one hundred years, last dance, disintegration, the walk... I could list at least 5 other songs off a single album. This was very early cure and to think they didn't improve in every dept between 79 and 89 is madness. I heard it in real time and it was the same with Depeche Mode, both hit a peak around 89/90. You can't compare this with at least half a dozen songs off disintegration alone.

    • @Tdub0911
      @Tdub0911 26 дней назад

      @@Darrenski I know it was early. Still, even though I only first heard of them in '84 (freshman) and loved their stuff from then on, once I we t back ans heard the early one, this stuck and still does.

    This performance might have set a precedent - because this particular song owes much of its fame to the fact that, for a period of about eleven years (from the last dates of the '84 tour to the middle of the '96 tour), they would always play extended versions in concert, with adlibbed vocals as well as extended guitar solos.
    Robert has been inconsistent over the years as to whether the song has any literal meaning, or how broad the lyrical metaphor is...
    Most Cure line-ups have Robert's minimalistic "rhythm as lead" guitarwork set against a more fluid lead player (Thompson, Bamonte, or Gabrels) - but it's still Robert who plays the extended solos in songs like this one, 100 Years (sometimes), Pornography (sometimes), The Kiss, Snakepit, Forever/Three, and maybe one or two more.

    "This just is the case. Parting is such sweet sorrow. Not knowing where the time will go. It's such a long end, it's such a long end, such a long end..." They really were having fun touring for their 2nd album and didn't want to say goodbye to the crowd so soon.
    I felt the sadness from Robert Smith and the anger from the bassist (Simon Gallup)!

    My favorite live version of this song, it is always known for me to be the F Robert Palmer version. They were told to cut their performance short to get Robert Palmer on stage sooner, hence the playing out the song longer with the such a long song line over and over and then the end when Simon yells F Robert Palmer..such a great attitude from that time period vs now.. the punk attitude coming out.

    This music is called ‘New Wave’. The Cure my first big love (They started when I was 10) and the fact they still touring and selling out after more then 40 years says enough. The real and new analysts found and find out how brilliant the songwriting is. It looks so simple….., but so underrated. My favorite song is ‘a hundred years’, studio version quite slow and really New Wave, but the live uptempo version has so much energy and lyrics remain deep.
