Arkle ?? None better. A once in a lifetime...and I watched my first horse race when I went to Sandown the year before for the 1964 Whitbread. Arkle wasn't running that time. I think he was beating Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup !! If he wasn't then he COULD have !!
Arkle was an amazing specimen of a horse , we ll certainly never see his like again , anybody who thinks he wasn t the greatest ever is deluded , I was a kid but was always in awe of him , his weight carrying performances unbelievable , wonderful memories .
The ITV and BBC vaults must contain video film of many, many horse races from the 1960s, which will probably never again see the light of day. It's a great shame when there must be other races that Arkle, Flyingbolt and Mill House, among others, contested and which were covered by those television channels. Unlike America, where it values its television heritage, the two British channels of the day erased so many television programmes by actually taping over much of its video footage which, quite frankly, is absolutely disgraceful.
At that time, most broadcasts were live and so it could have been simply too expensive to record them or archive them. Like, there are some races where we only have the radio commentaries.
I love the way he is in the Parade Ring. Looking the crowd right in the eye. Noble and beautiful. ❤ Thanks for posting.
'Himself' is simply the greatest steeplechaser ever!
The Greatest; amazing how he pulled so strongly at the start, yet still finished like a train. Thanks++ for posting, brings back great memories
Thanks for Posting this. The King of our Sport. Great build up to Cheltenham u have shown some great past races much appreciated.
Glad you enjoyed them
He was beautiful, Sue. Glad you taught me about him!
A wonderful video , thanks for sharing this. What about the crowds on the racecourse 😂. Different times I guess 👍🏻
Elf and safety. The 1979 Irish National with Tied Cottage looked like the local point-to-point, going by the crowds and huntsmen on the course.

Best ever, shaded flyingbolt
Not sure if he would have beat flying bolt.
This horse would beat any horse in his day from 2m / 4m
