Aerosmith's Janie's Got A Gun. The censors took out the line about Janie shooting her stepfather in the head. Steven Tyler was pissed. What was ironic about it was the tons of songs played in the late 1980s about males using guns. No, but censor the girl using the gun, even though the men using guns in music was often gratuitous, while the girl in Janie's Got A Gun sent a potent message.

It has long been common practice to have an album version and a 45 edited for pop radio. Early on the editing was to make songs shorter and remove any lengthy instrumentals that station managers feared would get listeners to flip to someone else. In time it also way to remove obscenities and offensive references.
This seems not to be the case as the alterations seem to be changes made to the approved broadcast version.

One song that comes to mind almost immediately is "Miracles" by Jefferson Starship. The album version - which the FM Rock stations played back in the day - had a line about oral sex somewhere in the middle of the song. If you actively listen for it, you'll hear it as plain as day, but because the long version is, well... lengthy, most people had zoned out before it came up, me being one of them.
Another classic is "Life in the Fast Lane" by Eagles, for the obvious "...we've been up and down this highway, haven't seen a goddamn thing..."

I am so surprised that Louie Louie by The Kingsmen was not included; it took lead singer Jack Ely to shout up to the microphone near the ceiling after having his braces tightened a couple of days beforehand to sing the song's lyrics; so controversial was this rendition of the song (even for 1963 standards) that the FBI investigated the matter. in the end, they ruled that this version of the record was deemed to be unintelligible in any language

Way back in 1966-67 a Canadian band called the Royal Guardsmen recorded a series of singles based on Snoopy's imaginary encounters with the Red Baron in the Peanuts comic strip. The songs referred to "the bloody Red Baron". They became very popular in several countries including Australia, especially among children. In Australia at that time, the radio stations in different state capitals had different play lists and adhered to different standards of what they considered decency in what they broadcast. This meant that the radio stations in Sydney played the songs with the word "bloody" uncensored while the radio stations in Melbourne bleeped out the word. The result of this was that the children in Sydney sang about "the bloody Red Baron", but the children in Melbourne sang the word that they imagined was being bleeped out, so that parents were scandalised to hear their eight year olds singing about "the f***ing Red Baron".

Wow, I hadn’t realized how much I missed this. I can remember having the record and loving it. It was covered by Chuck Berry, It got band in some areas because of the implication. look at Lou Reeds song Walk on the wild side. it says " Candy came from out on the Island In the back room, she was everybody's darling, But she never lost her head Even when she was giving head. " Another part of the song goes she shaved her legs then he became a she. so many songs have alternative meanings.
