  • It's BJD restoration time! In this video, let's have a look at how you can use a mild dye bath to restore a lively color to an old and yellowed doll. This is a much easier method of deyellowing than sanding away the discoloration, and it was fast and easy to do.
    For easy reference, the colors and amounts I use are:
    1 tsp Rit DyeMore Royal Purple
    1 tsp Rit DyeMore Super Pink
    6 quarts of water
    The rest is all about the timing! Isn't it an incredible color difference?
    Have you ever tried to deyellow a doll before? How did it go?

    I find this so interesting. I knew you could dye them. But to restore them is amazing ❤❤❤

    Just today I am doing a test with percarbonate to see if I can lower the yellowing of a Dolkot doll I got some time ago following what you did on one of your videos. So far it is working! Thank you for making this kind of videos, I learn a lot from your work

      I'm so glad it's been helpful to you! I jokingly tell my friends that my channel slogan is "ruining dolls so you don't have to" but I haven't actually ruined any yet. Turns out they're tougher than you'd think. :)

      I'm glad it's helpful! It's been so hard to find information on what dye ratios to use so I knew I'd need to share how it worked.

    OMG it looks so good! Even though I know purple will cancel out yellow, I think I would have been scared that dying it enough to cancel out the yellow would make it a lot darker or too grey, so it helps to actually see these results side by side (I guess it makes sense, since it's sort of like adding purple toner to yellow bleached hair and the pink makes it less grey). Now I wish I could touch up my 20yo Luts Chiwoo but I can't part with his original faceup so I guess he just has to stay the way he is :')

      I feel that! I have a few dolls that are quite yellowed and would benefit from a bath like this... but I like their faces too much to wipe them to do it. I guess photoshop color correction is going to stay the best option for them!

    Nice job! I got the purple in Dyemore and had a pink in the regular so I did them separately when I tried it [a few years ago]. I liked the results but didn't have a big enough pot at the time for my EID boy. Maybe I should commit to taking the spray paint off and actually dyeing him X,D
    All that to say your results are inspiring. ^_^

      @LomisPlayground  6 месяцев назад

      Oh yeah... I had to get the extra big pot specifically because of my EID guys LOL Fortunately it was something I found for just a few dollars at a thrift store. The hardest part was finding a steel one that would work with my induction cooktop!

    That was really interesting, and the results were very good. I do wonder why they don't use lightfast reds and magentas like Quinacridone pigments, for the doll skintones.

    • @LomisPlayground
      @LomisPlayground  6 месяцев назад +2

      My assumption is it has something to do with what the resin will tolerate... since I've been casting my own doll parts this past year, I've found urethane resin is VERY picky about what it gets along with. Wrong kind of pigment? Won't cure, it'll either foam and turn into a mess or stay rubbery and gross! Hopefully as resin becomes more refined, it becomes more tolerant of what sort of inclusions it can handle without affecting the cure.

    Do you play music or anything when you dye? I like having background sound.

    • @LomisPlayground
      @LomisPlayground  6 месяцев назад +1

      I usually listen to music when I'm working, it's nice! This time I was chatting with my daughter Eevee, though. You can see her hanging out on the other side of the counter at the beginning. She loves watching me work on dolls.

    Wow, the result is shocking actually. I wonder if you will MSC the body and / or if that would help to keep it from fading and yellowing again.

    • @LomisPlayground
      @LomisPlayground  6 месяцев назад +1

      UV cut MSC would definitely help reduce how fast it yellows!
