Repairing a broken BJD head

  • This doll suffered an unfortunate break during shipping, resulting in the back of the head and part of the headcap shattering into pieces. Imagine how devastated the owner must have been!
He eventually found his way to me for a sturdy repair. The doll's owner elected not to have any filler added to the cracks since they were very smooth, as any fillers would have required sanding, and that would have discolored this tan resin. Still, it's not nearly as noticeable of a seam as you might expect!
Damage during shipping is unfortunately relatively common in the BJD hobby, but hopefully this helps illustrate some of the ways a broken doll can be fixed and given new life.
Have you ever had a doll arrive damaged?

This is very useful, especially for those older dolls that are irreplaceable.

Yes! I'm fortunate to be comfortable doing so many kinds of repairs... a lot of my dolls' sculpts have been long discontinued and I feel like I would be nervous to handle them if I feared breakage.

I was very impressed that your paint dots transferred so smoothly. I'm always thinking it'll smear and be less than pin-point accurate. I have a pinky finger to repair, so your technique is very helpful.

I would be horrified if that kind of break ever happened to a doll... Poor doll.

Yes, I would be so sad! It's always nice when things are fixable, but I've definitely had disappointment over doll accidents and know how hard it can be.

"Old habits from my jewelry making days", boy do I feel that. Why do a lot of us jewelry or garment makers end up with doll customizing as a next hobby 😅

I guess "Make the thing, but SMALLER" is a logical next step 🤣

great repair! i had a doll head completely shattered, the face came in five separate pieces from a giveaway i had won that i pieced back together with apoxie sculpt and then painted the apoxie lines gold. i was struggling a bunch with the repair though because no matter how much I buffed the resin sometimes the apoxie would just not stick. it's patched up now but boy was that a hassle haha, I prefer your method by far

Oh goodness, what an ordeal! I'm glad you were able to do it, though, and I love the kintsugi idea of painting the seams gold!

I fix mine with super glue, fill gaps with baking soda or wait and fill with UV resin fine pen. I don't bother with pins, if it breaks again then it wont be where the glue was. I like Your video's and hope Your health is well. You gave us a scare, a while back.

I hear many good things about super glue and baking soda! I haven't done it but I know it sands very well for doing things like broken fingers.
And thank you, I am slowly improving! I definitely don't have the strength or energy I did a few years ago, but the new medications I am on have helped a ton and my doctors allow me to be more active again :) Hopefully I'll be able to build my energy levels back up so I can get back to working on my dolls all the time.

This is amazing! I love how it's barely even noticeable.
Couldn't the owner get a replacement, though? Or does the company not offer that when things break in shipping? I've gotten all my hands and other broken part shipped without any cost.

I am not sure what the full story was - I think the original owner was soured by the experience and decided to sell it rather than getting a replacement. The person who bought it sent it for me to repair!

That makes sense! I'm so glad you could repair it for them so the doll can be enjoyed by someone.
