Mercedes ML55 AMG - Does cheap mean cheerful for AMG's ugly duckling? - BEARDS n CARS

- The Mercedes-Benz ML 55 AMG is something of a 'love it or hate it' car for most petrolheads, and its not too hard to see why...
It comes from deep in the Chrysler era of Mercedes, has eyebrow raisingly low used prices, and an admittedly soft appearance for a car to carry the legendary AMG badge and a 5.4 litre V8 engine.
So what's the deal with these rare performance SUV's of the early 2000's? Let's head out on the road and review the early 2000s Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG!

Extremely underrated car
ML55 AMG. Magnificent SUV. One of the best Mercedes i have ever owned.
Nice
Here you are again, LOL...
My dad had the Ml430 version many years ago and I’ve been thinking of getting the AMG version. Love them!
Great review! I picked one up about two years ago for under $4,000 - everything working fine! A sweet ride that takes me everywhere in style and fast...
These can be a great bargain.
Nice one!
Great video! I just bought a 2000 ML55 in British Racing Green with only 48k miles on the clock for a crazy low price! The 5.4 engine purrs just like it does in the rocket E55.. This thing has serious pickup!
I liked the comparison to the VW group products, however you ignored the main advantage this vehicle has over the others. That is, the ML is a body-on-frame truck with hi/lo 4x4 transfer case, rather than a unibody AWD car-based platform.
The result is that this truck is highly capable in all aspects- it rips on the motorway, and performs great on tough off-road trails through mud, snow and sand as well. Let's see a Touareg do that! ;)
The Touareg is actually known for being one of the best off-roaders of the 2000's, lol. And as Fifth Gear proved, it can also tow a Boeing passenger plane xD
I love my 2000 black beauty. The original owner sent it straight to Renntech for about 25k worth of mods. Now about 400 horses. The biggest negative that I have is the old plastic is cracking. Part of that is our south Texas sun probably. This is my second ml55. Bought one in 2004, hit a deer at about 90 in 2006. Never any major issues, until the deer, that is.
Enjoyed your videos. Thanks.
Nice one, glad you enjoyed it
@@HSGAutomotive 👍
Great review, thanks for uploading, Yes they're all VERY light on the steering, probably because they were really built with the American market in mind. The biggest difference between this and the VW and the Porsche has to be that it is a traditional body on frame 4x4 with a low range gearbox which makes it more of a truck than a car. Fantastically durable though.
My thoughts exactly, the Chrysler era of Mercedes in the earlier 2000's feels very much so softened for the US market
I’ve driven the 2011 E550 (only thing I can compare) it too has very light steering which threw me off. I get it’s a coupe but for the engine size going highway speeds stiffer steering would be better
Pretty decent vehicle Mercedes Benz is a pretty good manufacture.
I'm finding the Mercedes R500 and R63 AMG strangely cool now. So rare and so overlooked.
Yeah the R63 is hyper rare, and from what I hear, insanely expensive to have work done. Read an article on one where AMG wanted something like 40-50k for an engine overhaul
Love these cars.
My dad had this exact same car!!! It's great i love it personally.
Nice one
Thanks for the review! I think it looks more dated yes, but that kind of makes it a better classic option then an older Cayenne or Touareg in my opinion. I feel like it would be really cool to drive the ML55. When I'm looking for a Cayenne or Touareg I always tend to lean towards a 'newer' model because they don't have that classic feel just yet...
It's certainly a more unicorn level fast SUV from the earlier days of those vehicle types. Some of the feel and design hasn't aged as well to me as the Teg or Cayenne, especially the very 90's interior
@@HSGAutomotive Yes, that's true! But it was still a solid and completely functional interior right? Not cheap or bad quality, just outdayed design wise, am I right? I am leaning towards the ML55 right now, gonna look at some for sale in my area next week...
@@HSGAutomotive Guess I just love the old-school design, quality and speed....
It offers a lot of spec for the money, but I'd recommend keeping expectations of Mercedes-Quality to a minimum when it comes to the Daimler-Chrysler era of the early 2000's. The 90's AMG's are great, and everything from the CLS onward got back to their reputation, but these have a distinctly more American plastic vibe. Other models suffer from it too, like the C-Class.
@@HSGAutomotive Thanks for the insight!
Awesome review as always!!
love mine what a car and im sure that is more reliable than the 3 others
My V10 is pretty flawless, lol. But glad the ML is serving you well
@@HSGAutomotive I love the v10 touareg and the v12 q7 is one of my dream car what a unicorn
this thing also has a low range gearbox, it has a live front axel...its more of an offroad car
The Teg V10 is known for being one of the best off-roaders of the 2000's.
@@HSGAutomotivenowhere near as capable as ml though!
@@bekabeka71 Define 'capable'...The Touareg can tow a Boeing. And mine never had a single engine issue with over 113k miles in 18 months of ownership, while averaging 26 mpg.
Very clear and understandable Nothing more or less. Thanks!
I wonder if there are any Brabus MV12s in this country
This is a great review 👏
I have both a 2000 ML55 and 2005 Cayenne Turbo. Assuming the Cayenne ur referring to is "S" model non-turbo v8? The Turbo is a big step up in power and also interior quality over the "S".
Indeed, the 340 bhp model
Having owned both an 06 Cayenne TT (tuned, custom cai, exhaust, 550hp) and a 2002 ML55, I can tell you in my experience the Cayenne feels fast but is simply not fast, at all. It's 1000lbs heavier than the ML55 😆 it is so heavy that it needs about 800hp to actually be "fast" basic ass M3's and stupid Mustangs would beat me by a mile regularly. The ML55 is more refined even though it's a little older, and with some mods I wonder if the ML could keep up with the CTT.
@@FoxtechconsultantsML is a proper off-roader don’t forget it can keep up with 4x4s
My dad have a ml430 it’s fast i can only imagine the ml55 top speed
I bought one last week, and it's great!!!
PS 300+ km !!
Hope your having fun in it, How is the car? I’m about to buy one with 300kms also, do you think the kms are too high? How many kms can this motor last until? Appreciate any input.
@@theveganboxingchannel9395
Finally I bought one with 390 k km , from Swiss, the engine is smooth like one which I tried with 260 k , and I put on it 7 k km like nothing, I think the important point is how it was serviced before than only the km. Thanks and blesses.
Dam 😔 no mention of BMW X5 4.6
It seems way less reliable then these options... The X5 gets a lot off hate online. I don't know actually, but I'm in the market for one of these right now and I'm definitely not considering an X5...
My favourite sports suv will always be the Durango hellcat with it’s stupid power
they should let you test that rs6, tesla and the c63 estate they have !
I have plans to go back and review some others, so we'll see what happens :)
@@HSGAutomotive looking forward to it
Love the vid, but a facelift firs gen x5 will always have my heart..
Ml is better off-road though
@@bekabeka71 I off-road my e53, its good I always try getting it stuck and fail every time, I have 20s mind you, with all seasons, the ML is probably better but at the price of looks, comfort, interior, quality, the x5s are just way better in every other way. For all purposes e53, if its just for an off-road experience then ML, but not by a long shot I think
@@aidenp5768 I had x5 too, no comparison, ML w163 is the king, even my w166 can’t keep up
Have you tried a BBW 5 4.6is? You should!!! For comparison....
19mpg (uk gallon) is roughly 15 liters per 100km on highway. Is that true?
Yeah 14.8 so close enough
@@HSGAutomotive i appreciate your answer... I will stick to ml 400 cdi then :D
These are great cars...Best in black....cheap to repair......test car must have bad steering rack....ours is gas converted
Seems to be a possible issue with this issue of AMG, as I also had considerably floaty steering on a similar age C55 AMG
Very good video
Why you called this ugly? Its not even ugly? The famous Bruno Sacco designed one
My steering is very stiff been that way for a while. Its steerable once moving. I don't see any power steering leaks and the reservoir is always full. Anybody has an idea what it can be?
Rack and pinion needs replacing!
The ML 55 has speed sensitive power steering. Yours has become faulty. Mine was the same. I had to replace the entire steering rack eventually. Not cheap! If you're not concerned about speed sensitive steering, the steering rack off a similar year ML320 will work.
Hi again from WA , can you comment on the AMG 55 vs E53 X5 4.4 v8. I currently daily one , mufflers delete. Love it but looking for more power. ML 63 is still very$$ . An amg 55 has come up. Just wondering if the ml is much better than X5. Cheers.
I can’t say is I’d recommend this one as much tbh, it feels more dated than some other AMG’s and not as ‘Mercedes’ level in quality
@@HSGAutomotive thanks mate.👍
Niceeee
It's RHD.
And
Das ist gut, Ja?
