    Its so weird watching these final fantasy videos as a total outsider to the series, as well as the target demographic
    It looks and sounds like an incoherent ever shifting mess of a series, like a formless monstrosity from a Lovecraft story

      Yeah that just about sums it up tbh

      @Punkswithspunk Funny that you should mention that since JENOVA is basically a genderbent alien virus,planet-destroying,monster and motorcycle cultist-birthing Cthulhu whose cells make you sick and usually crazy but on the upside also give you superpowers and let you grow angel wings if you drink enough of them.

      I feel like the most cohesive thing about Final Fantasy is aesthetics. Boot up FFIV or XIV, and you hear the same title music. Over the years, FF has accumulated a big list of aesthetic touches that just feel “Final Fantasy”. Class/job designs, songs, spell names and effects, items, sound effects, menu appearances, and so on.
      If you really want to make sense of how FFXV and FFI are part of the same series, you kind of have to trace things game by game, along with which people worked on what games.

    This game is so early 00’s edgy, it should have linkin park music playing with it.

    Fun fact, this is one of the few PS2 games you can hook up a mouse and keyboard to your PS2 to play. It also had online multi-player in Japan which was gutted from the international release and replaced with some extra post-game missions. I don't know if anyone has done a MGS3 Online style revival project for it as I doubt enough people care but one can still play with mouse and keyboard and I remember it controlling well. I've never actually played this game with a controller.

    How do the new enemy characters fit in aesthetically?
    That’s one of the main things I didn’t like about the games A giant elf with blue shit on his face? A robot sm angel? Wtf are you doing Nomura?

    • @kuronoroux8864
      @kuronoroux8864 4 года назад +1

      Yeah, a few changes here and there would make them fit better the world imho.
      If they went with the DMC route with DeepGround fashion, it'd worked better to me

      Also a lot of neon stuff on clothing for some reason, it doesn't fit to any of the original game. Deepgrounds feels like a Kingdom Hearts characters tbh

    I heard sb speculated that Last Order is the Turks’ POV of the Nibelheim incident, hence the beginning showing Tseng and the confidential files of Nibelheim and they not believing that an infantryman can toss Sephiroth into the mako pool and assuming he jumped himself.

    Great video! I would have never revisited Dirge on my own. This game was a big let down but I always loved the character models and they aged really well. Looking forward to your take on Crisis Core......specifically your thoughts on Genesis.

    You know, way back when G4tv was still a thing, I caught both this game and 10,000 Bullets on Cinematech and thought they were different iterations of the same game. I think Dirge of Cerberus would've benefited from playing more like 10,000 Bullets.

  • @OriruBastard
    @OriruBastard 4 года назад +2

    Yeaah, considering that Vincent was a literal side character who wouldn't even join your jolly little gang unless you said the right things to him, it didn't make much sense to me how they started treating Vincent and Yuffie as if they'd belong all along. Like, what if Cloud and his gang never found Vincent or Yuffie?

    • @Uroboro_Djinn
      @Uroboro_Djinn 4 года назад +1

      Canonically they find both.
      The reason they're optional isn't clear but what is clear is that these characters are meant to be in the party. Vincent is tied to Hojo, the gsme's actual main villain. Yuffie adds an entire extra level and story arc in the game which is important plot-wise.
      Their "optional" status doesn't change the fact that the game expects you to find them and locks away crucial story elements if you don't.

    • @OriruBastard
      @OriruBastard 4 года назад

      @@Uroboro_Djinn
      Reason why they are optional is quite clear. Creators didn't expect screwnix starting to milk on sequels.
      And no, while they both have whole story arc in the game, you can beat it without them so technically they aren't that important. They just add in some extra flavor and expand those elements a bit.

    You know, I've never thought about it before, but I have _no_ idea what "gangbusters" means either, or where the term originated from.
    Also nice to see a shoutout to Clemps, I first discovered him through his Drakengard retrospectives he's great. I just wish he'd stop cockteasing us with FF9 tracks and just review the damn game already.

    • @thorhighheels
      @thorhighheels  6 лет назад +1

      "gangbusters" was the name of a popular radio show from the 1930s. Because it did so well, people started referring to other popular shows as being "just like gangbusters" and then it evolved from there. ..or at least, that's what google tells me.

    Yo Thorbeux! So finally: Where´s ma review of EarthBound at?!!
    You should absolutely review it so-i´ve-been-playing-style.
    Really dig your videos. Much love from Nazi Germany.

    • @thorhighheels
      @thorhighheels  6 лет назад +1

      I'm gonna be honest, but I really don't have any plans for it. Not yet at least. I played Earthbound about half way through, 4 or so years ago. I liked the characters and stuff, but the gameplay started to put me off a little. I remember it being quite difficult and grind heavy, which isn't really what I look for in RPGs generally speaking. I'm totally down with giving it a second chance though. And when I do, I'll definitely review it as well. But as for when that is, I have no clue.

    • @user-fl1ed1nl7d
      @user-fl1ed1nl7d 6 лет назад

      Actually it´s a breeze if you do a little extra grinding in the beginning in Onett, or right before taking on bosses and stuff. From then on it´s pretty easy albeit the relatively high encounter rate. But I can definitely understand you losing interest in it a little. To me the game really is something special, but it sure can test your patience. If it didn´t quite appeal to you back then it most likely won´t when revisiting it. That being said, had I played it for the first time ten years ago I probably would have been turned off by it. But since I discovered it in my late 20´s - I think the situation is a little different and I was blown away by this gem of a game. And that comes from a guy that usually despises RPGs! I guess just wait for the game to call for you. You might develop the taste for it. :)

    Hold up-Hojo banged Lucrecia? I always thought he inseminated her in a creepy, physically distant sciencey sort of way.
    I never played Dirge of Cerberus but it doesn't look at all that bad. I mean, the gameplay looks as flaccid as Ghost in the shell on ps2, but the lore elements look enjoyably over-the-top.

  • @Densoro
    @Densoro 4 года назад

    Not to steer us toward the inevitable Game Design Singularity, but I think this game would've benefited from playing more like Warframe. That's definitely what the cutscenes get you hyped for, and it catches crap because it fails to deliver on that expectation. And hey, maybe by funneling that style of gameplay into a linear narrative, it would've counteracted the grindy nihilism that pushes people out of WF's late-game.

    A good ending for this retrospective, i remember my first playthrough the game, the only version i found back in that days was a japonese version, i finished the game but i was fucking angry for not understanding the plot, so a replayed last year to finally fulfill my curiosity aaaaand it was so disappointing, i mean, i didn't expected nothing really good but at least something more polished, at least the final battle it's kinda cool and the cut scenes like u said are very theatrical, thing that i always enjoy. Now we got to wait for the remake and try to not kill ourselves after playing the final product Ç_Ç.
