    Fun fact : For english localization, the brought talent from professional theater, to make the medieval feel natural and seem like a stage play.

      Other fun fact that I didn't catch n forever -
      The Occuria all speak in iambic pentameter, just like in Shakespeare plays.
      STILL one of my favorite games. Just so much thought put into all of it.

      They also allowed voice actors to build on the dialogue they were given and make alterations. It's why certain spoken lines don't match up fully with the subtitles. The reason for this was the subtitles were transcribed before the audio was added to the game, and they didn't have time to alter it. Cid was the biggest example of this, who had a number of times where the actor altered his dialogue. Also why he is probably the most flowery with his words. Fits the character excellently though.

    On your point that it is multi cultured, as an Indian, I was quite surprised when I reached the second region/city of the game, where everyone was spouting Hindi exclamations, left and right.I read the dialogues in a TV show like fake Indian accent (even though the costumes they wore were more Middle Eastern Muslim like, than traditional Indian, as far as I remember).
    That shit was hilarious.
    There's even a guy who is a British trying to do an Indian Accent.
    EDIT : Scratch that, it's Sanskrit, but it can be labeled Hindi too, since it is derived from it. For more info, here's a list finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Bhujerba

      Problem is it works too good, at least in Zodiac Age cause that's all I've played. Once you've got all your gambit set up with a full party It makes the game way too easy.

  • @krmillustrations512

    I never saw Vaan as the main character, but rather a vessel in which the player could sit; treat him less like someone you should care about and more like a friend who's watching a play with you, commenting along the way. His comment about "just being along for the ride" is pretty literal.
    At first I was lukewarm on the game but the more I played the more I liked. Unlike the previous entries, which were very character-centric, FF12 felt way more interested in creating a world to live in. The cities felt like cities, news broadcasts were easy to come by, you learned about cultures more often than individuals, most of the events you witnessed were just a sliver of the whole that was happening offscreen. I especially loved what they did with the Judges; they took was was essentially the worst part of FFTA and re-imagined them into a very interesting battalion.

    • @Dadiris
      @Dadiris 2 года назад +6

      His comment about being along for the ride was a response to Basch actually, saying he had no intent of serving as Ashe babysitter after they're done with getting rid of Vayne

    Axes actually do random damage. The game never tells you this though, or how damage is calculated with any other weapon which all have their own unique traits. Although since you had all your characters equipped with axes, the randomness wasn't a problem.

    This is my personal favorite game in the series and who would’ve guessed it was the first one I grew up playing it was the first final fantasy where I felt like I actually finally got what all the hype was about. I was so enthralled in the world growing up ivalice is such a good setting and even though the story is literally Star Wars I was hooked from start to finish. Just love the PS2 esthetic. Best library.

    • @d3v1lsummoner
      @d3v1lsummoner 2 года назад +1

      I never really understand the Star Wars comparison, yet it gets repeated. Why? Because there's an empire and rebels? Sand? The closest thing to a chosen one is Ashe and eventually she rejects her 'destiny' in favor of forgiveness and moving on from grief. The empire isn't that evil and it's leader is more concerned with granting mankind freedom from control of 'god' rather than any nefarious intent. The Princess's team threatens to reignite war which could cost many lives otherwise spared by living peacefully in subjugation. What happened to Reks will be repeated many times if the rebel nobility get their way.
      Meanwhile in Star Wars Palpatine is evil because... we need a villain.

  • @MrEntinen

    To be fair axes are only the best weapon type if all you look at dmg per hit. They pay for their high might by having huge dmg deviation meaning sometimes axes hit for much less than they should unlike the less powerful but more reliable Swords. Also different weapon types have many different assets like what stats are used for to increase dmg, how often you can hit and how likely they are to chain hit or crit. How you are suppose to tell any of these things without google except dmg per hit, I have no earthly clue. Then again in this like many other things the game seems to be designed to be full of random things to stumble across.

      I didn't Google anything until endgame and immediately regretted it once I realized how wrong I was playing and how much I missed. The Zodiac Spear chests thing is absolute bullshit. You'd have to know what chests not to open from almost the very beginning of the game. Otherwise good luck on the 1/1000 chance for the chest in the Henne Mines. Even with RNG manipulation it's still an absolute pain in the ass to acquire.

    • @Nimbereth

      I liked to play with a balanced party. Every player with axes seems boring.

    • @jedgrahek1426
      @jedgrahek1426 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, his whole axes spiel was nothing but ignorance. I recall playing through this game and naturally making a varied party of characters using bows, katanas, poles, sword and board, etc, because that was more interesting and fun. Honestly, how can someone experienced in rpgs look at those damage numbers and not naturally wonder if there might be something else going on besides "they must have accidentally made the axes super OP lol". I mean, really, lol. Otherwise love your content though Thor.

    • @nesoukkefka1741
      @nesoukkefka1741 4 года назад +1

      @@jedgrahek1426 Agreed Axes and Hammers is probably one of the worst type of weapon in fact all thing considere, their main advantage is the strongest Axes and Hammers are available extremely early if you seek for them, but the random damage make them inferior to other more consistent weapon. However in the vanilla FFXII some Greatsword, Spear and Katana were kinda OP like the Excalibur is such an amazing weapon due to her Light Element and the sheer amount of ennemies weak to holy in this game, Zodiac Spear is available stupidly early if you know how to proceed and pretty much destroy the game and Masamunes are OP for bosses due to their ridiculous Combo rate.

      Baltheir ? Was the original main but square didn't think a middle age man could sell. So they literally shoved vaan and penolo in at the last moment. It's the reason if you take those characters out of the story nothing changes.

    • @KayderimGameplays
      @KayderimGameplays 4 года назад +1

      @@night1952 Of course he is, and i agree that he indeed is the best out of the bunch (with Balthier) to be the main character.
      If you think that only the main plot of the game should define the main character, then Ashe and Basch would be fine, but considering everything that is in the FF XII universe, the sidequests and especially the marks, it wouldn't make sense at all. Just imagine the queen of Dalmasca hutting creatures for money like some mercenary.. It could work if she's raising funds for war but that was never a problem for her in the main plot since she just got everything she needed.
      And on top of that, since Vaan and Penelo are hobos that know nothing about the world, the story can be explained to them (and us) as we aproach the places, instead of having a MC like Lightning that already knows everything of her world and explain everything through books.
      Vaan does have an objective in the story, he's just not too vocal about ai, like at all. He only says about it once in the start of the game and at the end "I want to take back what is ours". He's not like those protagonists where the story literally circles around then, he's just there to help when he can.
      Thinking about it, he's very similar to Tidus, except the romance part, the difference is that the Cast in FF X doesn't treat Tidus like shit like they do with Vaan. I grown to hate Ashe with that bitchy attitude so much that i wanted to see Basch shove his sword in her chest and become king himself by the right of conquest or something, but then i played with Japanese audio and realized that the translation and dub are all wrong, Ashe is much more mature in the original than the version we got.

    So, somehow, I ended up with the Zodiac job version of the game, and was my first proper Final Fantasy game ( played a demo of FFVIII on PC before).
    I really liked it, and without any nostalgia filter (which I don't really have, I played it around 3 years ago) I can say the story, characters (except Vaan and Penelo), and combat departure from the traditional JRPG trope was for the best.
    It's quite underappreciated and talked about. IMO, other games can look at it and tales it's good ideas from it.

      The combat is awesome but the plot doesn't even hold a candle to something like FFX. Only characters from XII I thought were interesting and actually cared about were Balthier and Fran. Once it was revealed that Ashe was a princess I lost all interest and started skipping all the cutscenes. The gameplay being a great as it is completely makes up for it though.

  • @arthurnewton1125
    @arthurnewton1125 5 лет назад +2

    Well, you're right, ZA is a remaster of IZJS. That's great, but there's one big problem with the game now.
    FFXII:ZA is so easy to break, it'll normally just break itself. Yes, the license board is made to enforce variety now (though you can still stack classes), but each individual character is now much more powerful than the original would ever allow. This wouldn't be a problem if the enemies were changed to accommodate that.
    But with the few Arcade-style bullshit in new enemies as an exception, each enemy is exactly how they were in the original, making mowing through everything much easier than it should ever have the right to be.

    • @nesoukkefka1741
      @nesoukkefka1741 4 года назад +1

      Yeah IZJS was better overall you were limited to one job, so your character had strength and weakness and you had to actually think of party composition a little kinda like the very first Final Fantasy, ZA giving the option to pick 2 Jobs just break the game already and in further release they even allow to cancel your choice of job to select another one, but on top of it being able to go in Trial Mod and exit it back to the main game while keeping all the thing gotten in it makes it even worst cause Trial Mod loot clearly weren't design for that.

    I first played this game when it came out and I absolutely hated it. I tried it again about a year later, and whaddya know, I liked it a lot. Fast forward to 2017 when I picked up the Zodiac Age edition, and my god, it's fantastic. Even though IX is my favorite, I think XII: The Zodiac Age is the best game out of the entire franchise. It'd be interesting to see you revisit the game now that westerners are finally able to play the international version, since it fixes a lot of your gripes. And the updated graphics don't hurt either.
    Also Penelo best girl.

    I still have a soft spot for the original ps2 version of this game. Sometimes I feel like Zodiac Age deliberately made a point out of removing much of the early game-breaky shit the original had (early Demonsbane, Zodiac Spear being tied to avoiding specific chest, etc), which annoyed me cuz I loved breaking the shit out of my game.

    As a person who played games at the time more in spite of the gameplay than because of it (for me, story was king), I actually really enjoyed the gameplay. Vaan was the worst thing to happen to this game though; you could have picked literally any other party member and gotten a more coherent story out of it. I remember thinking "Oh, the story's finally starting to heat up," and then it ended. Like, literally, right then. There was just no investment at all.

    People who play FFXII without differentiating your characters... you're doing it wrong. Every weapon and job type has strengths AND weaknesses. Axes have heavily randomised damage compared to most weapons, for example, so they aren't even close to being the objectively best weapon. There is no perfect job type... until you get to the end game, of course.

    • @Easelgames

    Mainly due to childhood nostaliga of playing this game FFXII is one of my favorite games ever... Of course there are quite a few flaws. but they're easily overlooked. The only thing that keeps bugging meat the back of my head whenever i play it is the story... In detail it's quite complex, a bit hard to follow but still interesting. But if you look at the big picture... It's basically just Star Wars.
    There's a princess who has lost her homeland against an evil empire and heads a resistance to fight said empire - Check
    An orphaned vagrant gets help from an old man and teams up with a rougish sky pirate and his animal like partner - Check
    There's a city in the "clouds" that has stayed independant from the empire - check
    One of the main bad guys is the father of one of the protagonists - check
    Small sand people who raid shit - check
    There's a giant battle in the end with the resistance fleet attacking the empire's gigantic, secret superweapon that can fire huge energy blasts at shit - check

      Yes, there have been comparisons to Star Wars since the game came out, but ultimately what sets it apart is that Luke (Vaan) doesn't have any force abilities and the story is less about the balance of light and dark and more to do with what people can do when they are stripped of power. Ashe is trying to gain support for her uprising, Fran has lost her attunement with nature and is shunned by her people, Basch is a refugee from his old home and a traitor to his current one, Vaan and Penelo are war orphans at the bottom caste of society. Hell, the villain's goal is to "bring history back into the hands of man". Star Wars is a classic tale of light triumphing, Final Fantasy XII is a story of the meager gaining power or coming to terms with losing it.

    Great game that was unfairly-judged by many (myself included) in its time for being a significant departure from past games. Honestly I think it's better than X in a lot of ways, and even though some gameplay mechanics are annoying in the original non-Zodiac version, and Vaan is kind of an out-of-place protagonist, I can really appreciate everything else about the game a lot and I wish I had given it a more fair chance back then.

    In case you haven't learned by now, Diablo isn't an mmo, and this game is far from Diablo gameplay. people who prefer games like Diablo would less likely be interested in this.
    And about the axes-- They do work on most enemies, yeah, but not so much the flying or invulnerable to physical type. There are some bosses and enemies like this in the game where you must use bows, guns, magicks, or technicks.
    On another note: Love your stuff man. Thanks for saying such nice things about my favorite FF game, it went unloved years. I remember, I happened to pick it up in a gamestop bin several years ago just because it was an FF game and it blew my mind. I couldn't believe I never heard of it before. I'm even more shocked, but happy about the remaster. With 4x aliasing at 1080p on an emulator though, it already looks like the remaster.

    I didn't like Final Fantasy XII at first because it lacked character development and the MMO style combat demanded the need to constantly level grind so that you don't accidentally walk into an area with dangerous enemies. Also, the characters had no individual preferences in terms of equipment, and the summons were more of a risk then a reward sense summons drain all your character's MP making it really easy to die. But my opinion of this game changed once I played till the end. The story gets better later on, and the music voice acting, and locations that changed weather were excellent. I also REALLY loved using the Zodiac Spear, that weapon is AWESOME. I really like some, but not all the characters, like Balthier, Fran, Basch, and Larza. Vaan didn't really stand out as a male lead and was overshadowed by every other character, Ashe was a huge bitch, and Penelo was...just kinda there. All and all it a good game I enjoyed playing, it's still a waaaaay better game than Final Fantasy XIII that's for sure.🤔😒😊😁

    Ok first you must know Yasumi Matsuno, that the original creator of the greatest rpg and game of all time tactics ogre let us cling together (made that game before ff tactics which most people think was made first) also made FF12 but then he left so FF12 was originally meant to have the main character as one of the other ff 12 characters i think was Basch. So Vann was not even meant to be a character in the game at all let alone the main character. They added him to make it more relatable to younger players if i remember the reason from watching the documentary. Also the story seems convoluted for the same reasons, it was meant to go one way and then another because yasumi left the company while making it. Yet the reason the game got saved was because of Yasumi's influence and genius which gave it most of its best features. If Yasumi would have had full control it would be on God level greatness but instead its still the best FF game. Vann was alright he wasn't that gay not as much as you Crossdressing Thor in high heels lol I do have to give you props for talking about the set up feature in the gambit, that makes you have to spend an hour trying to get everyone to use cure poison in their gambit was hillarious. I don't like it when they shackle your ability to chose the jobs you like and instead force you to only be able to use some jobs for certain characters.. fuck that and fuck the zodiac. I only want a graphics upgrade and nothing more!!!! This game is still brilliant thanks to Yasumi Matsuno, and still the best Final Fantasy game of all time! and btw FUCK FF10 and its aquatic gay crap i never played it and will never play it for that reason. It reminds me of women in dating sites that list generic interest and always say i like to go to the beach, shopping, and being on the phone.. UH you BORING UNCREATIVE AIRHEAD, Jump off a bridge into the fucking ocean!!! LMFAO

      Vaan along with Penelo was fully intended to be in the game as avatars for the player, it's square enix that requested him to be de protagonist since the other game they created (Vagrant Story) didn't sell very well and they thought it was because of the age of the protagonist, so they switch Basch for Vaan.

    • @DarkCode
      @DarkCode 2 года назад

      @@KayderimGameplays I heard and read Van was not even created until later later either right before or right after Yasumi left. Maybe oenelonwas but I don't think I me ruined penelo so anyways Van was added later. I rather prefer him since he got to socialize and explore the slums. Not sure how Batch's origin story would have played out since if they started the story with Batch the slums would probably not have been a factor.

    • @Dadiris
      @Dadiris 2 года назад

      Actually, there are tweets from matsuno himself saying that the rumor that 'Basch was the main character' was a lie.
      And Vaan and Penelo were never a later addition, their japanese voice actors were hired around 2002, this was very early in development, and Vaan along with Ashe was the firsta characters shown in trailers, Matsuno left the company in 2005, that is much later after Vaan was there

  • @AlexBermann
    @AlexBermann 4 года назад

    My biggest problem with final fantasy 12 was that it had a great story - your characters just hardly were a part of the interesting part.
    Another thing is that the empire isn't that bad. Yes, they are military expansionists, but there is no sign that things in Rabanastre were worth than before. The inequality there seems to have been there before. So Vaans motivation does seem rather poor - and after that, Balthier and Ashe drove the plot while we were forced into the perspective of the tag along kid.
    Then, there is the gameplay. The later versions did manage to somehow focus character development so you don't have to learn several skills you'll never use. There also is some dissonance: Vaan will always have a half naked sprite, even if you put on heavy armor, so it does not make sense that going for a heavy armor build with him is as effective as going for the light weapon and armor combination he was obviously build for. There also is the part where the game basically forces you to grind the same enemies over and over because some things are really overpriced and you need to rely on chain bonuses. This goes double if you want to buy skills - and the game does not give you any indication of how good a skill will be while expecting you to buy it in a shop and for a hefty price from a merchant. As if that weren't enough, if you don't focus on learning mysth techs, you lose so much MP advantage that a lot of level ups aren't a real choice since you rush mysth techs anyway.
    I'm also not a huge fan of the combat system because there very seldom is a need to make use of the positioning it includes. MMOs rely on cycling several skills, intricate party roles and dodging aoe attacks to stay interesting. Final Fantasy XII didn't do that. However, gambits were really nice. Programming your strategy and seeing it go off felt pretty great.
    And lastly... what is up with the clothing design? Vaan is half naked in a hot and dry climate, he wears armor except at the parts of his body where an injury would be fatal and his best looks like from an old sci do movie. Bash has no protection on his stomach, Ashe wears armor like jewelry... it's a mess. Then, you look at the NPCs and they look perfectly fine.
    It all comes down to the feeling that this game is full of ideas, but lacks direction. The main character doesn't fit the story, the design of the player characters does not fit the setting.
    Also, it feels like it lacks testing. The problems with the gambit setup and the incentives the progression system provides you are obvious to every player and they could have easily be avoided. Some were unavoidable because the idea of a single player MMO is kinda terrible. In an MMO, you control one character, so more intricate rotations and positioning are relevant. That doesn't work with AI party members, but without it, MMO gameplay is boring. And that is why FF XII is the only final fantasy I didn't finish

    Im watching this in 2021, how wrong on many things regarding combat, axe's are RNG weapons, you can hit a critical of 9999, or do 0 damage in your next attack, they are not bad, but its nature hold's them back for being inconsisten AF, there are more consistent and broken weapons out there, ninja blades, with the genji gloves and having 50% HP or less you will be comboing for days, (having less HP increases your chance of combo), and at this point i think you should replay this game using The Zodiac Age edition, and reading how each weapon works (katanas do magic damage and scale with magic attack), FFXII has a heck ton of obscure/hidden combat mechanics, that once you discover them are easly exploitable to the point that you can walk with your lvl 10 character into a lvl 50 zone and come out after a couple of hours at lvl 65, Solo Vaan run's are crazy AF when it comes to this.
    Many of the balancing issues are fixed on TZA version and it's way more enjoyable than the original (note that i put over 300 hours in the original PS2 release), more options, fixed/revised mechanics, new ways to break your characters, and the addition of new items, revised gambit system, its superior in every way possible, plus its on switch and you can play while in the toilet so 11/10.
    Other than that the review is pretty freaking good.

You're better off watching cutscenes of this game online since even if you buy it, you won't get to play it. The game plays itself unless you disable Gambits, you know, this game's big new mechanic?! It's the first Final Fantasy I didn't even want to bother finishing. Definitely my least favourite and I've played them all so far besides X-X2, the MMOs and the XIII trilogy. I even liked 15 more. At least you do get to actually play that one, it's music is great and characters have a point and you get attached to them. It's world was fun to explore too. 12's world is a mess. For Ivalice, I'll stick to the Tactics series.
