- Pikmin 4 Smoky Progg Boss Fight - Foot Of The Stairs. The Smoky Progg "Dodoro" is an optional boss found in the first Pikmin game, and is one of the most difficult enemies in the game. The only way to encounter it is to visit The Distant Spring before or on Day 15. It resides in the large watery area located to the east of the landing site, in the center of a small group of islands. The Smoky Progg is in an egg and if it is approached, it will break out within four to eight seconds. When the egg breaks open, Smoky Progg will immediately go to the landing site, ignoring Olimar and possibly walking through your whole Pikmin Squad if not careful. Swarming the unopened egg with a large number of Pikmin can easily defeat it. However, it will not leave a golden pearl.

The In Game Description from the Trailer suggests that most creatures in the world of Pikmin are mostly nocturnal and become extremely aggressive at night
The Smoky Progg literally unhatched itself because it hates Glow Pikmin so much it attacks them half finished just to kill them
The glow is irresistible

I believe its said in game that if a Mamuta fails to reach a safe place before nightfall and becomes exposed to Glowsap. Its eggs become mutated by the stuff.
So when it reproduces and lays eggs, they go sterile and the embryo becomes a Smoky Progg
It became like this BECAUSE of the glow pikmins lmfao
If you find the egg in time, you can actually destroy it and avoid a Smoky Progg encounter entirely
I almost destroy the egg but I was too busy on fighting off the other enemies until that horrifying being comes out of it
Useful information
It is not hard if you charge attack and use sprays
I tried to attack the egg, but then my base was unguarded, and doomed after that.

I love that when the night is done the smoky progg wanders off like it forgot what it was doing.

Man, I haven't fought the smoky progg in 22 years! He doesn't seem as deadly or difficult as he used to be, but still scary as ever. I remember you could only fight him on certain days at the Distant Spring and he'd drop a pearl worth 100 pikmin when defeated.
It's incredible how certain gaming experiences can leave a lasting impression
It’s actually still pretty deadly. It’s so poisonous that it bypasses a White Pikmin’s poison immunity and a Glow Pikmin’s immortality.
Now how about we make a mission with 5 smokeys

Legit one of the scariest enemies in 1, even if it is way easier here, the sheer horror I felt seeing it again was awesome. 10/10

Yeah that was one of my last guesses of a recurring enemy.
I lost 150 to him my first playthrough, and like 60 my second when I knew what I was doing. Dudes dangerous

I didn't actually know the smoky progg was in the game while doing the night expedition
When I saw the cutscene with the egg and it began hatching, I had an "oh shit" moment
In every aspect, the smoky progg manages to be scary, I remember my first encounter with him actually had my heart pounding
I did not know bulborbs could get that big, and roar and flurry attack is actually a bit scary
This is a real horror game.
To think people are already calling it too easy.

I was so busy collecting the "star bits " I never noticed the egg. So it hatched and I just started panicking and tossing out bombs

I was going to say that this boss fight was easy, but you can only bring glow pikmin into the night, so that makes it like the one from Pikmin 1, BUT there’s multiple!
Not to mention you have to deal with several enemies besides the Smoky Progg, and it has ranged attacks and shockwaves now
Also like you said, there are either multiple Smoky Proggs or they respawn after a while. Either way, it's still bad news. This is quite the upgrade from Pikmin 1

Funny thing when I saw the smoky progg I was genuinely surprised but thought that since Glow pikmin are immune to every single hazzard I just charged them at it. Lost all my 80 glow pikmin.

I never played Pikmin 1, but they made the Smoky Progg to be an absolute Pikmin crusher. When I fought him, I didn't know if they nerfed him, or Glow Pikmin are OP.

1:46 the darkness in the area thanks to the lack of the headlamp's light makes the Smoky Progg so much more menacing... I'd say its on par to the original. Makes me wish there was a optionnto completely turn off the headlamp

I am so SO glad I was not spoiled on anything like this in Pikmin 4, like yeah I saw the Waterwraith returning because of prerelease material hinting at it, but the Smoky Progg I was jumpscared by seeing the egg for omg (I saw the egg and was like “is that what I think it is?”)

idk why, but for me it looks like a Phantom Frog half alive half dead and its simply limping by his two front legs dragging his decaying body on the floor. It just looks horrifying if you think of it that way

You Can fight it later in the game with any Pikmin but it kills whites,its not poison its death.

Not near as hard as it was in Pikmin 1 unfortunately. Glow Pikmin being immune to everything, including the Smoky Progg’s poison, will tend to do that
His smoke can easily kill glow pikmin
