My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

Fist thing I would have done after starting is see if it charged. Reversed battery can burn out the stator in the alternator or more often the diode in the wire. That is what draws high current when reversed and should just blow the fuse.

  • @richardcranium5839
    @richardcranium5839 Год назад +16

they probably had the wrong battery in it at one time. the only difference between a group u1 and a group u1r is the terminals are reversed on the battery case. real lucky it didnt fry the rectifier(i hope you checked the charge system). the no mow in reverse that uses the relay saved those magnetos. fancier riders with modules get real expensive with that mistake!

If you don't have an originally configured battery you can get into big trouble. Some mowers are configured with the posts reversed. Sometimes the parts clerk will give you the wrong one if they fail to verify the post configuration. Sometimes a box store will have only one battery with the posts reversed also. You need to pay attention, or at least verify where the positive post is before buying the battery.

Thanks! I bought a battery at Walmart. He gave me a battery with the terminal reversed. I Installed it and turned the key. One thump and then nothing. I checked the battery and realized the positive and negative were backwards. I returned it to the store and got a new one. After installing it, nothing. And your video told me about the fuse, which I changed, everything's fine. Thank you for this video.

My future son-in-law at the time, hooked up the battery backwards in my daughter's Audi 100. The results were much worse than just a blown fuse. The solid-state voltage regulator in the alternator was fried, the solid state radio was fried, and most of the components in the dash were also fried! Give some folks a wrench and they think they're a mechanic!

I think the person that rewired the battery was a little confused 🤔
A couple years ago I rebuilt an old L100 that was in pretty rough shape. My first problem was I couldn't get the ignition to work. I knew nothing of these mowers and the problem was staring in the face. I first thought the empty fuse holder was an unused connector (the headlights had been removed from the mower I was working on). It was only after I found a wiring diagram that I realized it was a fuse holder. BTW thank you so much for the video on the compression release on the cam. I couldn't figure out why I had to back off the crank to start the engine. Now that I know I will likely leave it the way it is as it still starts every time, as long as it's past the compression stroke and hopefully the weight will stay in it's new forever home in the sump.
The reason the fuse holder melted is because the fuse partially failed, all that should have happened is the fuse filament should have burned, leaving the holder intact. The position of the fuse is terrible and should actually be covered. When dirt and moisture gets into the fuse holder, add heat and it forms oxidation and compromises the fuse connections in the holder, so it takes more amperage to burn the fuse. This causes excessive heat (this can also be the result of a cheap fuse). Further if the circuit this fuse was protecting would have had smaller gauge wires it likely would have melted them; I have seen this happen in older cars with old fuse boxes. Anyone with a similar setup should remove the fuse, blow out the dust, use some WD 40 or better deoxidizer spray, blow it out again and reinstall the fuse (its best to replace it with high a quality automotive fuse like "littlfuse", they are much more expensive but they blow more consistently and faster), then cover the fuse holder to keep the moister and dust out.

I just bought a new John Deere model S 100. My previous model LA 105 lasted me 12 years. The mower deck finally just plain wore out. But the tractor still runs. Just like you say--it's amazing what a regular yearly oil change--air filter-- greasing and blades replaced will do. I never had an engine failure. And guess what--the 12 year old blade spindles are still good, and I suspect they would fit this new deck if needed. I saved the old blades, spindles, pulleys and other hardware. a little maintenance goes a long way.

My other neighbor asked me to look at it, thinking he hooked the battery up right, I didn't check. Installed new bendix, and same thing. Only then did it dawn on me to check the battery. Sure enough, it was hooked up backwards. Switched cables, and presto, engine starts!

However this is one i tried a friend told me and as a joke i had a beat up old scotts with tires that haven't had wind in them in 5-7 years. the side walls were cracked so bad they only held air for about 10 mins before they were flat again.
dump a cup of ATF transmission fluid in them and it fixed the leak!! They now last about 2 weeks before going soft. I seriously don't know why this works but i would love for you to make a vid on that! I seriously do not have a clue how ATF fixes leaking tires and the best part is its a lubricant so it never causes rims to rust!!

2 possible reasons for the tape on the cable they spliced together:
    1) Since they didn't know what they were doing, they knew enough to think that there shouldn't be any bare connections that could cause a problem.
    2) Since they hooked the positive to the frame, they may have accidentally shorted the joint to the frame and realized that they needed to insulate it.

The battery was connected backwards and ... nevertheless, everything was working right! The starter spun the right way. The PTO worked. The stator/regulator was charging the battery, albeit in reverse! The only thing wrong was that the battery wouldn't hold a charge as long as it should. I mean, I can't understand why! /s I don't know how long it was running like that, but obviously it was like that long enough to reverse the polarity on the battery. How it did that without melting the battery or anything else, I will never know, but... if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would never have believed it!

Good repair. It’s rarely just the fuse, it’s what caused the fuse to blow. The car cables? Yikes. Have a great day!

Thank you so much. I was troubleshooting a fuel delivery problem and my battery died. Didn't realize my borrowed battery had opposite polarity and hooked it up backwards! I had the backwards spinning starter but didn't realize at the time. Then nothing worked and I saw the battery was backwards. I didn't see a fuse but hopefully I can find it and didn't trash anything else. Stupid hurts.

Good job , like watching you work on these mower’s. Just waiting till you get a J/D LA 135. I’ve had that mower for so long can’t remember what year I bought it. It’s been one good mower. Never a problem. I’ve only put 375 hours on it. (New)

I have a JD LX178 bought new in 1994. Had in the shop once to replace a bypass hose on liquid cooled engine mechanic had to loosen engine to get to it. Otherwise just maintenance: belts, blades, filters and oil changes. You get what you pay for.

I love your helpful videos and frequently share them with my other DIY pals. I am still chuckling about your frustration with the new fuel containers and the government required spouts. Mine have all been replaced with less complicated aftermarket spouts.
In the video on ethanol for small engines, your ability to sniff the percentage of ETOH was impressive.
I have a fuel question: I always add 2 cycle oil to a gas can before adding gasoline to prevent me from forgetting to add the oil. However, when a relative borrows a tool and fuel, is there an easy way to determine whether oil has been added to the fuel.
Thank you for your excellent videos.

If I had to guess as to why. at some point someone probably had a battery with the negative and positive posts on the wrong side for this installation. so they added them cables to make everything reach.

Some people should not try diy. It just makes a problem cost them more money. But I guess that is what feeds your family. I hope they can all find you to fix their fixes. LOL

Most good mechanics are just mechanically inclined by nature.
My brother could take them apart when he was younger, finally figured out how to reassemble them correctly.
I went to broke hillbilly university, and can essentially fix anything.

Your videos not only save time and money - they can also save lives! I recently tackled a fuel line replacement on my Husqvarna tractor after watching a few videos - when I had it apart I realized the gas I was smelling was coming from a fuel line barely holding onto the tank. Literally fell off in my hand. Didn’t want to think what this would have done if I had been running it when it was hot. Many thanks!

I had a guy give me an old Ford garden tractor/mower. He said he charged the battery and the starter would still not engage. Since he new I worked on old mowers he just gave it to me because he couldn't figure out what was wrong and he had a zero turn he was mowing with anyway. The starter was running backwards and wouldn't engage the starter bendix. Thing is, it was an old unit. Some farm machinery used to use a positive ground. He had reversed charged the battery... yes, it did hold about half a charge. So... I discharged the battery completely... waited until the next day and then recharged it correctly. Hooked the battery up correctly and the starter worked fine. There was several other little things that needed to be fixed but within a few days it was running like a top. Cost to fix... about $50.00 for oil and filter, air filter and spark plug. I also cleaned the carb, sharpened and balanced the blades, greased the front axle and spindles, greased the mower spindles and checked the belts. Seems like I sold it for around $450.... nice profit!!
